The role of the management factor in technology transfer is studied. The effects of the social and cultural environments of Industrially Developing Countries (IDC) in terms of the variables influencing managerial effectiveness is also examined. An efficient and novel method for job analysis (i.e., Job Profiling) which incorporates the above variables is introduced and its theoretical foundations is discussed. Based upon the findings of a presented case it is concluded that, the Job Profiling method has to be integrated with selection criteria and should be used in conjunction with focused selection techniques to ensure the optimal match of the managers working in the IDC and their jobs.

Informal settlements constitute the largest means of habitation in the urbanizing world especially in the developing countries. In Dar es Salaam, informal settlements serve over 75% of the population. Among the often-mentioned characteristics of informal settlements include the dominance of informal economic activities. In particular, spaces for trading activities are observed to be randomly distributed in the informal settlements as they serve for the everyday life of its dwellers. However, little had been studied and analysed on the role of trading in shaping socio-spatial character of informal settlements. The aforesaid called for the need to investigate the underlying trading processes and products that characterise the setting of informal settlements. Using Mlalakuwa settlement in Dar es Salaam as a case, this paper maps and analyzes the social and institutional context of trading facilities and the resulting spatial character of informal settlements. One of the key findings in this paper is that trading activities along the main roads transform most of the bounding residential houses into trading facilities. The nature and character of trading facilities appear to define the spatial character of informal settlements in the context of the coexistence of formal and informal systems.

This article is a condensed version of a much longer paper,* the purpose of which was to explore the viability of the approach to legal care which has been adopted by Nigeria within the cultural background and the prevailing social and economic conditions. In the original, therefore, there were additional sections devoted to: (a) the concept of legal care, including a brief examination of the role of the lawyer in developing countries, (b) the social and economic background, and (c) the difficulties experienced by accused persons within a plurality of cultural, language and legal systems. It is not possible to deal with these topics adequately within the space of a short article, and the main focus will, therefore, be the legal aid scheme itself, except for some brief background remarks in the introduction.

This article is the result of serious speculation about the role of radio in solving some of the social and psychological problems of adolescents and young adults in developing countries. It can also be considered as a pilot study and the first part of a very extensive content analysis research that will be hopefully carried out in future. The findings show the necessity of further research in relation of mass media and interpersonal communication. It will also contribute to our understanding of the real place of radio in the lives of adolescents when faced by social and psychological problems which other social agencies cannot help them with.

Organizations have an important role to play as agents of social change and developement, particularly in developing countries in which changes in social conditions are often prerequisites for growth. This paper suggests a framework for conceptualizing the social role of organizations. Four archetypes of organizational management policy orientations—“commercial,” “entrepreneurial,” “philanthropic,” and “missionary”—are derived based on two underlying dimensions of altruism and social change orientation. The determinants of these two dimensions, the conditions favouring the emergence of each archetype and its management and design aspects are discussed. Each archetype may be relevant to a society under particular environmental conditions.

Abstract. This contribution consists of a critical review of the literature about the articulation of two traditionally separated theoretical fields: social representations and commitment. Besides consulting various works and communications, a bibliographic search was carried out (between February and December, 2016) on various databases using the keywords “commitment” and “social representation,” in the singular and in the plural, in French and in English. Articles published in English or in French, that explicitly made reference to both terms, were included. The relations between commitment and social representations are approached according to two approaches or complementary lines. The first line follows the role of commitment in the representational dynamics: how can commitment transform the representations? This articulation gathers most of the work on the topic. The second line envisages the social representations as determinants of commitment procedures: how can these representations influence the effects of commitment procedures? This literature review will identify unexploited tracks, as well as research perspectives for both areas of research.
