Algumas espécies de fungos são capazes de provocar infecções micóticas. Uma dessas infecções, é a dermatofitose, causada por um grupo de fungos, denominados Dermatófitos que compreende os gêneros Trichophyton, Microsporum e Epidermophyton. O tratamento da doença é realizada utilizando antifúngicos convencionais. A emergência de cepas resistentes tem estimulado ao desenvolvimento de medicamentos naturais e ao emprego do gás ozônio. Objetivou-se nesta pesquisa avaliar a atividade antifúngica de óleos essencias in natura e ozonizados frente ao Trichophyton mentagrophytes ATTC 9533.  Foram empregados óleos essenciais in natura e ozonizados de Cinnamomum cassia, (L.) Presl), Eugenia caryphollata L. Merr. & L. M. Perry, Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt, Eucalyptus globulus Labill, Eucalyptus staigeriana F. Muell. ex F. M. Bailey e Mentha piperita L., avaliados quanto a atividade antifúngica. Os óleos foram ozonizados em equipamento corona (Ozon & Life). Utilizou-se a técnica de microdiluição para avaliar a concentração inibitória mínima (CIM) e a concentração fungicida mínima (CFM). Foi determinada a cinética fungicida dos óleos essenciais. Os óleos de C. winterianus C. cassia e E. caryphollata, ozonizados se mostraram capazes de anular Trichophyton mentagrophytes com exposição de 5-10 minutos, mostrando-se mais eficientes que os de eucalipto e de menta De forma geral, os resultados evidenciaram a atividade antifúngica dos óleos essenciais, apontando a possibilidade do uso na terapêutica antifúngica frente ao dermatófito avaliado. No entanto há necessidade de realização de estudos em relação à  segurança no uso e  de eficácia dos óleos essenciais.

RESUMO Introdução. As parasitoses representam um grave problema de saúde pública, nas comunidades mais carentes. Rotineiramente a comida acaba sendo veículo de disseminação de microrganismos como, Entamoeba sp e Giardia sp, também tem destaque a não acessibilidade a tratamentos medicamentosos.  Buscou-se analisar a atividade antiparasitária e toxicidade dos extratos: Bidens pilosa, Cucurbita sp , Eucalyptus globulus, Mentha piperita L., Ocimum gratissimum, Petroselinum crispum, Allium sativum, Coriadrum sativum, Dysphania ambrosioide, Punica granatum. frente aos cistos da Giardia sp e Entamoeba sp, como potenciais antiprotozoários. Métodos Foram produzidos extratos brutos secos, hidro alcoólicos, por método maceração e posterior secagem. Os cistos de Ameba sp. e Giárdia sp., foram expostos em soluções dos extratos nas concentrações de 100%, 50%, 25% e 12,5%, com uma proporção de amostra/extrato (1:10). Foi utilizado a técnica de Artemia salina para observação da toxicidade dos mesmos. Resultados Os extratos de Eucalyptus globulus, Mentha crispa, Allium sativum, Coriadrum sativum e Punica granatum, demonstraram maior espectro de ação frente aos microrganismos. As principais alterações, evidenciadas nos cistos, foram retração da membrana e lise celular com extravasamento do citosol.  Observou-se que a maioria dos extratos demonstraram-se praticamente atóxicos. Conclusão As plantas medicinais devem ser estudadas adotando ensaios in vitro e in vivo, para observar a ação antiprotozoária em ambas as situações. O estudo revelou um potencial   para a produção de produtos com fins terapêuticos antiparasitários.   ABSTRACT Introduction. Parasitosis represent a serious public health problem in poor communities. Routinely, food ends up being a vehicle for the dissemination of microorganisms such as Entamoeba sp and Giardia sp.  We sought to analyze the antiparasitic activity and toxicity of the extracts: Bidens pilosa, Cucurbita sp, Eucalyptus globulus, Mentha piperita L., Ocimum gratissimum, Petroselinum crispum, Allium sativum, Coriadrum sativum, Dysphania ambrosioide, Punica granatum. against Giardia sp and Entamoeba sp cysts, as potential antiprotozoal agents. Methods Dry, hydroalcoholic crude extracts were produced by maceration method and subsequent drying. Ameba sp. and Giardia sp. cysts were exposed in solutions of the extracts at concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25% and 12.5%, with a sample/extract ratio (1:10). The Artemia salina technique was used to observe their toxicity. Results The extracts of Eucalyptus globulus, Mentha crispa, Allium sativum, Coriadrum sativum and Punica granatum, demonstrated a greater spectrum of action against microorganisms. The main alterations, evidenced in the cysts, were membrane retraction and cell lysis with cytosol extravasation.  It was observed that most of the extracts were practically non-toxic. Conclusion Medicinal plants should be studied adopting in vitro and in vivo assays, to observe the antiprotozoal action in both situations. The study revealed a potential for the production of products with antiparasitic therapeutic purposes.

A esporotricose é uma micose  causada por espécies de Sporothrix schenckii. O tratamento desta doença é realizada utilizando antifúngicos convencionais. A emergência de cepas resistentes tem ocasionadoratamentos alternativos, como os medicamentos naturais ou emprego do gás ozônio. Objetivou-se nesta pesquisa avaliar a atividade antifúngica de óleos essencias in natura e ozonizados frente a Sporothrix schenckii. Foram empregados óleos essenciais in natura e ozonizados de Cinnamomum cassia, Syzygium aromaticum, Cymbopogon winterianus, Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus staigeriana e Mentha piperita, avaliados quanto a atividade antifúngica frente a linhagem padrão de Sprothrix schenckii ATCC 16345. Os óleos foram ozonizados em equipamento corona. Utilizou-se a técnica de microdiluição para avaliar a concentração inibitória mínima (CIM) e a concentração fungicida mínima (CFM). Foi determinada a cinética fungicida dos óleos essenciais. Os dados obtidos foram avaliados pelos Teste de Mann-Whitney e pelo este de Kruskal-Wallis. Os óleos essenciais in natura e ozonizados de canela, cravo, citronela, eucalipto e menta apresentaram atividade antifúngica frente a Sporothrix schenckii. O óleo de cravo ozonizado foi mais eficaz na redução da carga fúngica, sendo necessários 20 minutos para eliminar totalmente as estruturas fúngicas, evidenciando a possibilidade do uso na terapêutica antifúngica de S. schenckii.

O objetivo foi avaliar o efeito dos óleos essenciais de Mentha piperita, Cymbopogon nardus e Eucalyptus globulus, na qualidade sanitária e fisiológica de sementes e mudas de Schinus molle L. As sementes foram tratadas com os óleos essenciais nas concentrações de 10%, em 1 μL g-1 de sementes, 20% , em 2 μL g-1 de sementes, 30%, em 3 μL g-1 de sementes e o tratamento controle. Após os tratamentos, as sementes foram avaliadas pelo teste de sanidade, utilizando-se o método do papel de filtro (“blotter test”) e pelo teste de germinação, onde as sementes foram colocadas entre substrato vermiculita. Para as contagens, foram consideradas sementes germinadas e sementes mortas. Na avaliação da qualidade das mudas, mediu-se o comprimento da parte aérea, raízes, altura total e diâmetro do colo. A utilização dos óleos essenciais de citronela e menta reduziu a incidência dos diferentes patógenos presentes nas sementes de S. molle. O óleo essencial de menta a 20% e 30 % favoreceu a germinação das sementes. O óleo essencial de eucalipto, em qualquer concentração, aumentou o crescimento das mudas.Evaluation of essential oils in health and physiological quality of Schinus molle seeds and seedlingsThe objective was to evaluate the effect of Mentha piperita, Cymbopogon nardus and Eucalyptus globules essential oils, in sanitary and physiological quality of Schinus molle L. seeds and seedlings. The seeds were treated with essential oils at concentrations of 10%, on 1 μL g-1, 20%, on 2 μL g-1, 30% , on 3 μL g-1 and control. After treatments, seeds were evaluated by sanity test, using filter paper method (“blotter test”) and by germination test, where the seeds were placed between vermiculite substrate. For counts, sprouted and dead seeds were considered. Shoot length, root, total height and stem diameter were measured for seedlings evaluation. The use of citronella and mint essential oils reduced the incidence of different pathogens in S. molle seeds. Mint essential oil at 20% and 30% were effective to promote seeds germination. Eucalyptus essential oil in any concentration was efficient to increase seedlings growth.Index terms: Mentha piperita; Cymbopogon nardus; Eucalyptus globulus

Os biofilmes bacterianos são comunidades estruturadas de células microbianas aderidas umas às outras ou a superfícies imóveis ou móveis e estima-se que 65% das infecções bacterianas estão associadas a microrganismos formadores de biofilme. Devido ao aumento do número de microrganismos resistentes a antimicrobianos, novas alternativas de tratamento vêm sendo estudadas, sendo a inibição do Quorum Sensing uma estratégia promissora. O objetivo do trabalho foi identificar a atividade antimicrobiana de extratos vegetais capazes de inibir a comunicação e a formação de biofilmes microbianos. Foram utilizados óleos essenciais à base de cravo da índia (Eugenia caryophyllus), lavanda (Lavandula angustifolia), hortelã-pimenta (Mentha piperita), citronela (Cymbopogon nardus), laranja doce (Citrus aurantium dulcis), limão (Citrus limonum), eucalipto (Eucalyptus globulus), canela (Cinnamomum cassia), pimenta-rosa (Schinus terbinthifolius) e gengibre (Zingiber officinale). Os microrganismos testados foram Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus e Bacillus thuringiensis. Os experimentos foram feitos em placas de ELISA e por Well Difusion utilizando os extratos nas concentrações de 5%, 10%, 20% e 40%. Os ensaios foram mantidos a 37 °C por 24 h e analisados por espectrofotometria e medição de halo, respectivamente. Os resultados indicaram que baixas concentrações de alguns extratos foram efetivas em inibir bactérias as Gram positivas e negativas utilizadas nesse estudo dentro de 24 h de ensaio. Além disso, algumas bactérias foram mais inibidas (E. coli e S. aureus) do que outras indicando que os extratos exercem efeitos diferentes entre as bactérias testadas. Os resultados sugerem que os componentes presentes nos extratos vegetais podem exercem um efeito importante na formação dos biofilmes indicando uma possibilidade de uso alternativo e complementar desses compostos no controle microbiano

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there are 3 million cases of pesticide poisoning each year and up to 220,000 deaths primarily in developing countries. Commercial repellents and pesticides, aside from being expensive, also contain chemicals that, when ingested, may pose further threats to the health of humans. The study aims to determine which plant preparation (bay leaf, garlic, peppermint, eucalyptus at 25%, 50% and 75% each) were able to form chalk and can repel the P. americana. Endemic and accessible plants namely, eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), garlic (Allium sativum), peppermint (Mentha piperita), bay leaf (Laurus nobilis) were used in this study as Periplaneta americana repellent in the form of chalk. Using a Completely Randomized Design, results revealed that the type of plant preparation and chalk formation are independent. All plant preparations repelled the P. americana. Based on the means of distances (cm) of repulsions, it was revealed that 75% Peppermint preparation has the highest repulsion mean of 80.67cm based on three trials. Hence, it is highly suggested that 75% and 50% Mentha piperita, as well as 75% Eucalyptus globulus, should be manufactured for commercial production based on the results of this study.

Introduction: The present study aimed to prepare Nanoemulsions of Mentha piperita and Eucalyptus globulus essential oils and comparison of the repellant activity of them with normal essential oils and DEET in the field conditions. Methods: To determine the protection and failure time of the essential oils and DEET in the field condition against natural population of night biting culicid mosquitoes, 4 human volunteers participated in night biting test. GC-MS was used to determine the essential oil components and the Dynamic Light Scattering device was used to measure droplet size and zeta potential. Results: The relative abundance of more common species captured in this study was 40.09% and 31.65% for Anopheles superpictus, and Culex pipiens, respectively. Based on the results, the protection time of nanoemulsions of M. piperita 50% against night biting mosquitoes was 4.96±0.21 h. Also, the protection for nanoemulsions essential oil 50% of E. globulus was 6.06±0.20 h. Comparison of the results showed that the protection time of nanoemulsions of M. piperita and E. globulus was significantly higher than of their normal essential oils (P˂0.01). Also, the protection time of DEET (as a gold standard) was significantly higher than of normal essential oil and nanoemulsions of M. piperita (P˂0.01), but there is no significant difference between DEET and nanoemulsions of E. globulus (P˃0.01). Conclusion: Due to the safety and biocompatibility of the nanoessential oils, and also relatively adequate and acceptable protection time, nanoemulsions of E. globulus and probably M. piperita can be considered as good repellents. It is recommended to do more research on these nanoemulsion repellents, as they may be good alternatives to DEET.

Abstract This study reports the action of essential oils (EO) from five plants on the activity of native and recombinant acetylcholinesterases (AChE) from Rhipicephalus microplus. Enzyme activity of native susceptible AChE extract (S.AChE), native resistant AChE extract (R.AChE), and recombinant enzyme (rBmAChE1) was determined. An acetylcholinesterase inhibition test was used to verify the effect of the EO on enzyme activity. EO from Eucalyptus globulus, Citrus aurantifolia, Citrus aurantium var.dulcis inhibited the activity of S.AChE and R.AChE. Oils from the two Citrus species inhibited S.AChE and R.AChE in a similar way while showing greater inhibition on R.AChE. The oil from E. globulus inhibited native AChE, but no difference was observed between the S.AChE and R.AChE; however, 71% inhibition for the rBmAChE1 was recorded. Mentha piperita oil also inhibited S.AChE and R.AChE, but there was significant inhibition at the highest concentration tested. Cymbopogon winterianus oil did not inhibit AChE. Further studies are warranted with the oils from the two Citrus species that inhibited R.AChE because of the problem with R. microplus resistant to organophosphates, which target AChE. C. winterianus oil can be used against R. microplus populations that are resistant to organophosphates because its acaricidal properties act by mechanism(s) other than AChE inhibition.
