The aim of this study is to analyze the selection process of teacher candidates in Turkey and Austria education systems. In the study, the Upper Austria Higher Education documents on the selection processes were examined and the teacher candidates' selection processes were observed. For the Turkish side, the higher education selection handbooks by Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM) were examined and 96 teacher candidates were interviewed. According to the findings, in Austria's teacher education system, the students should volunteer to be a teacher and also must fulfill compliance of the profession. In Turkey, on the other hand, the teacher candidates were selected according to the central examination results conducted by ÖSYM. While scores are taken into account in the areas such as mathematics, social sciences, science, geometry, etc., the evaluation related to the individual reasons for seeking this profession, individuals' eligibility of the teaching profession and personal characteristics are not considered in this selection process. The interview results revealed that while some of the candidates were willing to become a teacher, others reported obligation to do so and some stated that they accidently selected to be a teacher.

Purpose: To investigate the choice factors students consider when selecting a higher education institution, with a focus on the differences between gender and language groups. Problem investigated: The educational landscape has seen several changes, such as stronger competition between institutions for both student enrolments and government funding. These market challenges have led to an interest in students' institution selection processes as it has implications for the way higher education institutions (HEIs) manage their marketing and recruitment strategies. The research objective of this study was to identify the most important choice factors of prospective South African students. It also aimed to determine if any gender and language differences exist with regard to students' institution selection processes. Methodology: A convenience sample of 1 241 respondents was drawn, representing six South African universities. A self-administrated questionnaire was used to collect the data. Questions from the ASQ (Admitted Student Questionnaire) and CIRP (The Cooperative Institutional Research Programme) were used and adapted to the South African context after pilot testing. Hypotheses were analysed using the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) test with Wilks' lambda as the test statistic. Findings/Implications: Irrespective of gender or language, the most important choice factor for respondents was the quality of teaching at HEIs. The findings showed that males and females differ according to the selection of certain choice factors which suggest that HEIs can consider recruitment strategies for each gender group. Significant differences between the language groups were found for 17 of the 23 choice factors, signalling that different language groups make decisions based on different choice factors. African language-speaking students have, amongst other, indicated that the multiculturalism of the institution is a very important choice factor for them. Conclusion: The findings provide HEIs with an indication of the importance of choice factors considered by students in selecting a HEI. This will enable HEIs to use their limited funds more efficiently to attract the right calibre student (recruitment policies), to create a unique position, to sagment the student market more appropriately and to gain a competitive advantage.

Chile has a peculiar centralised system for the selection of students to undergraduate programs; this is the case for the more traditional universities associated in the Council of Rectors. This process has been in operation for over thirty years, and its major instruments and procedures, as well as its foundations, are still in force. The contents of the different tests are currently under review; however, the system will continue to be the same in the future. Changes come from the new conditions created by the 1981 reform of the Chilean higher education system. Important modifications were introduced in the constitution, organization and financing of universities. The university system was suddenly opened; from the original eight universities, the system expanded to sixty-five. New conditions and social, professional and technical demands are having an impact on the higher education system as a whole and, specifically, on the student selection processes. This article includes a description of the process of academic selection for entrance into the Chilean university system. Next we analyze the Test of Academic Performance (PAA), the main instrument of this selection. Finally the PAA is analyzed and criticized from two points of view: its psychometric relevance and its implicit model of intelligence.

The mobility of university students abroad is a phenomenon of great importance in the context of globalization and internationalization of higher education. Certain factors, such as the image of the institution, the country, the city, the evaluation of the study program, the cost, selection processes and even personal resources can determine the destination country. This article seeks to identify the attraction factors for which Brazilian university students choose Spanish universities to carry out their higher education. An exploratory study of a qualitative nature was conducted, a semi-structured questionnaire applied to twenty-eight Brazilian students of official rank: graduation, master's degree and doctorate. Data analysis was based on the assessment of attraction factors. The results indicate that the language, the tradition of the Spanish universities, the scholarships of the country of origin and the more flexible selection processes are important factors in the decision of these subjects. Spain is an option for many international students and the flow of Brazilian students to this country is significant, the authors also consider that these flows may be much larger in the future.

AND EVASION:  the contours of exclusion at the Federal University of GoiásAbstract: Considering the expansion of educational opportunities at the Federal University of Goiás, promoted mainly by the Program to Support Restructuring and Expansion Plans of Federal Universities, instituted in 2007, it is understood as relevant to relate the phenomenon of expansion with access, retention and evasion in the university. Intergenerational mobility is higher among college graduates than among people with lower levels of education. In light of this finding, researchers have characterized a college degree as a great equalizer leveling the playing field, and proposed that expanding higher education would promote mobility. This line of reasoning rests on the implicit assumption that the relatively high mobility observed among college graduates reflects a causal effect of college completion on intergenerational mobility, an assumption that has rarely been rigorously evaluated. This article bridges this gap. Using a novel reweighting technique, I estimate the degree of intergenerational income mobility among college graduates purged of selection processes that may drive up observed mobility in this subpopulation. Analyzing data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979, I find that once selection processes are adjusted for, intergenerational income mobility among college graduates is very close to that among non-graduates. This finding suggests that expanding the pool of college graduates per se is unlikely to boost intergenerational income mobility in the United States. To promote mobility, public investments in higher education (e.g., federal and state student aid programs) should be targeted at low-income youth.

É direito do cego o acesso a Universidade e a cargos públicos. In It is the right of the blind to have access to university and to public office. To do so,selective processes need to adapt to meet this demand. The National High School Exam - ENEM, which is growing exponentially and ensuring access to much higher education - is available to the blind candidate to test Braille and ledor, volunteer candidate to transcribe answers, essays, and to describe images for the blind candidates. However, several complaints about the performance of this volunteer add up, especially with regard to the subjective description of figures. Considering the maps as great importance in the examination of images, occurring in at least 5 per issue, the question is: how to improve the design of maps contained evidence of Brazilian inclusive public selection processes, so that their oral description is accurate to blind candidates? Through the recommendations on the use of the graphical variables of Bertin (1983), together with the recommendations of the area of Accessibility, and the opinions of two volunteers who have acted as ENEM lenders, this paper proposes recommendations for the elaboration of maps to be described orally to blind candidates on the exam.

The National Health Service (NHS) Constitution aims to safeguard the underpinning principles and values of the NHS. Whilst employers are obligated to recruit staff whose values and behaviours align with those of the Constitution, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are also expected to select students who demonstrate an understanding of those values and behaviours and potential to use them with their working practices. From the point of selection, HEIs assume a pivotal role in promoting and embedding those values and behaviours into curricula, and thus supporting individuals in the transition from student to professional. The purpose of this paper is to discuss how values-based practice has been embedded in undergraduate radiography education at our HEI. It describes how the HEI utilises values-based recruitment and selection processes, and explores the strategies employed to develop that foundation prior to entering practice placement. Key issues will be discussed including the importance of acknowledging and valuing the early experiences of students prior to being socialised into the established culture of the diagnostic imaging departmentThe role of the lecturer in supporting the transition from student to compassionate professional cannot be underestimated. This is multi-faceted and acting as a professional role model to students is an essential part of this whilst helping students to develop their own professional development throughout the course.
