Military activities associated with training, munitions manufacturing, and demilitarization has resulted in soil residues of munition compounds and their breakdown products. Two isomers of dinitrotoluene (2,4- and 2,6-) are often found in soil associated with those activities at considerable concentrations. Consequently, issues regarding the effects of exposure to birds that visit these habitats require evaluation. To provide data useful to a risk assessment approach, we followed a controlled dosing regime (gavage) using 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) in the Northern Bobwhite ( Colinus virginianus) for 60 days following a 14-day range-finding study and the determination of a LD50 using the up/down method. The LD50 was determined to be 55 mg/kg using corn oil as a vehicle. Individuals dosed exceeding this level were moribund or died within 60 h of exposure. Morbidity and death occurred during the 14-day range-finding study at dosing regimens of 35 and 55, but not at 15, 5, and 0.5 mg/kg-day. Compound-related morbidity/mortality occurred in the 60-day study during the first week of exposure at 25 and 15, but not at 5, 1, and 0 mg/kg-day. Overt signs of toxicity occurred with both sexes at the onset of exposure. Signs included weight loss, diarrhea, and lethargy. Dose-related changes in egg production, ovary, kidney, and brain mass, and body weight, but not feed consumption, were found. Changes in kidney mass and histological observations suggest accumulation of nitrogenous waste may be the cause of morbidity. These data suggest that oral 2,4-DNT exposures are more acutely toxic and has a different etiology than 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene in birds.

The present study was conducted to assess the effect of supplementation of Multi-enzymes with lysophospholipids on production performance of pure line White Leghorn layers. Body weights before and after the experiment did not differ significantly across the experimental diets. Irrespective of the dietary treatments, the birds gained 3.83 per cent of live weight relative to its initial body weight. Mean per cent Hen housed egg production was significantly (Pis less than 0.05) higher in diet supplemented with 0.10 MEC-L than other groups. Mean egg weight and average daily feed consumption during 25 to 35 weeks of age indicated no significant effect of enzyme supplementation. Average daily feed consumption per bird in control, 0.05 % and 0.1% multi-enzyme supplemented groups was 108.13, 105.66 and 107.67 g respectively and birds offered control diet recorded numerically more feed intake than enzyme supplemented groups. Comparatively low feed per egg was observed in 0.10 per cent group followed by 0.05 per cent group which offers economic benefits than control diets. However, the egg quality traits between different dietary enzyme supplementation groups showed no significant difference.

An investigation was undertaken on 180 day-old Hy-line layer chicks to assess the effect of herbal products on feed consumption, egg production and profitability. The experimental chicks were randomly divided in three groups with three replicates in each and were housed in identical management and environmental conditions. Dietary treatments were prepared by addition of herbal liver stimulants such as Livoliv 250 @500 g/ton (D2) and Superliv @500g/ton (D3) in the basal diet (D1). Feed intake, egg production and mortality were recorded throughout the observation period of 50 weeks. Feed per unit of egg production, hen day percentage, additional income of supplemented diet over the basal diet were calculated. Average daily intake (g) of the diets per bird were observed as 59.19±1.05 g, 58.31±0.337 g and 57.67±0.163 g up to 20 weeks and 108.94±0.06 g, 109.01±0.05 g and 108.26±0.41 g during the laying period fed with D3, D1 and D2 diets respectively. Similarly, higher hen day egg % (76.9%) was recorded in the birds fed with Superliv supplemented diet (D3), followed by Livoliv supplemented diet (D2) (73.4%) and Basal diet (D1) (72.1%) with feed intake per unit egg production of 179.3 g, 178.1 g and 193.0 g, respectively. Total egg production was found higher with D3 (161.49 egg), followed by D2 (154.15 egg) and basal diet (151.45 egg) with layer house cumulative mortality only in D3 (3.75%). Additional profits of Rs. 35.18 and Rs. 12.86 in terms of egg selling over feed cost per layer were calculated for the bird fed with Superliv supplemented diet (D3) and Liveloliv supplemented diet (D2) than that of the basal diet. Pullets were brought into production on a low-protein corn, soybean meal diet to which various nutrients including essential amino acids, choline, corn oil and feathermeal were supplemented. Production commenced between 18 and 20 wk of age and up to at least 60% production, hens fed the low protein diets (10% CP) produced at least as many eggs and as great an egg mass as these given a 17% protein corn, soybean meal control diet. Pullets fed the corn, soybean meal test diets, peaked at around 80% as compared to slightly over 90% for the control. Egg production immediately fell for birds fed the test diets to around 70% for most of the test treatments. Body weight remained constant or fell after peak production for birds fed the test diets as compared to a normal increase for birds on the control diet. Egg size increased for the test diets at a rate which was comparable to that of the control birds. In a second experiment, with older hens, supplementation of the 10% protein test diet with methionine, lysine, arginine and tryptophan, resulted in intakes of these amino acids which met NRC minimum requirement levels. However, egg mass output was reduced approximately 11% compared to the 17% protein control diet. While intakes of several essential amino acids fell below requirement levels, the degree that valine was calculated to be deficient in both experiments corresponded closely with the reduction in egg mass output of hens fed the test as compared to the control diet. ABSTRAKLimbah udang merupakan limbah pengolahan udang yang memiliki potensi sebagai pakan sumber protein bagi ternak puyuh. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji penggunaan tepung limbah udang (TLU) sebagai sumber protein pakan pada puyuh fase layer. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap empat perlakuan lima ulangan perlakuan yang digunakan terdiri dari empat level penggunaan tepung limbah udang dalam ransum yaitu P0 (kontrol), P1 (5% TLU), P2 (7,5% TLU) dan P3 (10% TLU), tiap unit perlakuan disi dengan 5 ekor puyuh. Puyuh yang diguanakan adalah puyuh fase layer umur 20 minggu, sebanyak 100 ekor yang didistribusikan kedalam 20 unit percobaan. Bahan pakan yang digunakan adalah jagung, dedak padi, konsentrat petelur dan tepung limbah udang. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis ragam dan data yang berbeda nyata (P<0,05) diuji lanjut menggunakan uji duncan. Variabel yang diamati adalah performa produksi: konsumsi pakan, produksi telur, bobot telur dan konversi ransum. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan TLU dalam ransum (P1,P2 dan P3) menunjukkan pengaruh nyata (P<0,05) dibanding kontrol pada minggu ke-tiga penelitian terhadap bobot telur dan konversi ransum, penggunaan TLU (P1,P2,P3) selama lima minggu meningkatkan konsumsi ransum (P<0,05) dibanding kontrol tetapi tidak berbeda nyata (P>0,05) terhadap produksi telur, bobot telur dan konversi ransum. Kesimpulan penelitian ini bahwa penggunaan TLU dalam ransum dapat digunakan hingga level 7,5% sedangkan level 10% menunjukkan adanya penurunan rata-rata performa produksi.Kata kunci: tepung limbah udang, puyuh fase layer, performa produksiABSTRACTShrimp waste was shrimp processing waste which has the potential as protein source for quail feed. This study was aimed to examine the use of shrimp waste flour (SWF) asprotein source for laying quail feed. This study used  completely randomized design that consist of four treatments and five replications.The treatmentswere using levels of shrimp waste flour in feed and consist of P0 (control), P1 (5% SWF), P2 (7.5% SWF) and P3 (10% SWF ). Each treatment unit was filled with 5 quails. One hundred of 20 weeks laying quails were used in this study. Self mixing feed that contained corn, rice bran, laying concentrate and shrimp waste flour were used in this study. The data obtained were analyzed using analyze of variance and continued using Duncan multiple range test. The variables observed were production performance that consist of feed consumption, egg production, egg weight and feed conversionratio. The results showed that the use of SWF in feed (P1, P2 and P3) showed a significant effect (P <0.05) compared to controls in the third week of research on egg weight and feed conversion ratio.The use of SWF (P1, P2, P3) for five weeks increased feed consumption (P <0.05) compared to controls but not significantly different (P>0.05) for egg production, egg weight and feed conversion. The conclusion of this study was the use of SWF in feed can be used until 7.5% on laying quail feed while the level of 10% indicates a decrease in average production performance.Keywords: shrimp waste flour, laying quail, production performance

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of giving levels of secang wood extract and lemuru fish oil on the appearance of laying quails which included feed consumption, Hen Day Production (HDP), feed conversion of quail egg mortality. This study used Autumn strain quail with a population of 168 individuals with basal feed supplemented with several levels of secang wood extract. This research method is an experiment using a completely randomized design (CRD) factorial with 4 treatments with 6 replications with each repetition consisting of 7 quails aged 10-15 weeks. The treatment was as follows: P0 = basal feed without the addition of secang wood extract P1 = basal feed + 0.2% EKS + 4% MIL, P2 = basal feed + 0.4% EKS + 4% MIL, P3 = basal feed + 0 , 6% EX + 4% MIL. The addition of a combination of secang wood extract and fish oil was carried out according to the level of quail feeding. The variable being measured; feed consumption, Hen Day Production (HDP), Feed conversion, mortality. Addition of secang wood extract with a level of 0%; 0.2%; 0.4%; 0.6%, and 4% lemuru fish oil had no significant effect on feed consumption, hen day production, feed conversion, mortality, this was due to flavonoids, polyphenols and active compounds in oil. lemuru fish does not affect the appearance of quail egg production. Flavonoid compounds in low concentrations have no effect on chicken feed consumption, because the content of flavonoid compounds can still be tolerated by the chicken body. The use of lemuru fish oil with a concentration of up to 6% in quails does not affect the consumption of quail feed, because the addition of lemuru fish oil does not affect the palatability of quail feed. The conclusion of this study was that the addition of secang wood extract. The addition of secang wood extract and lemuru fish oil did not affect hen day production, feed conversion and mortality of laying quails

The need to optimize the utilization of garri processing by-products and improve the protein availability through egg production motivated this study. 165 Acro Black laying hen of 41 weeks old were grouped into five dietary treatments of 35 birds per treatment and five replicates of seven birds each. Layers' diets were compounded at 0%, 11.25%, 22.5%, 33.5% and 45% of garri chaff and 0%, 3.575%, 7.15%, 10.275% and 14.3% of sun dried cassava peel levels of inclusion. The diets and groups of birds were labelled A, B, C, D and E and the birds were fed with their corresponding diets for 6 consecutive weeks. Records of feed consumption and number of eggs laid were taken daily throughout the period of experimentation. The results showed that egg laying performance was of the order C>D>A>B>E among the dietary treatments. While egg laying performance hovered around 60% in the control treatment A, it increased from 57% to 86% in group C. Birds in treatment E had the least feed consumption and least egg laying performance. Weight increase of the birds at the end of the experimentation were of the order A>B>D>C>E. It was thus concluded that garri chaff and cassava peel appeared useful as ingredients in layers' diets at about equal quantity with maize and wheat offal, respectively but the feed should be adequately fortified with protein rich feedstuffs and the diets must be introduced early to avoid rejection by the birds.
