Abstract At present, when designing mechatronic cyclic drives the developer as a rule chooses the law of motion, specifying as input data, the cycle time and the amount of movement and often introducing restrictions, for example, on maximum acceleration in case of developing high-speed drives. However, this approach leads to an overestimation of the maximum drive power and, as a result, a significant increase in energy consumption. In this paper it is shown that by choosing a rational law of motion of the drive at the stage of equipment design, it is possible to achieve a sufficiently effective optimization according to various criteria. The efficiency of optimization of different motion laws of cycle drives according to various criteria is analyzed. The dependences between the maximum instantaneous power, the amount of movement, the speed and energy consumption are established and graphically presented confirming the effectiveness of the rational choice of the law of motion parameters under an inertial load. At the same time, it is shown that when synthesizing the law of motion, it is necessary to take into account the maximum possible number of parameters so that the improvement of some parameters does not lead to a decrease in other parameters.

Abstract We design and demonstrate an asymmetric Ge/SiGe coupled quantum well (CQW) waveguide modulator for both intensity and phase modulation with a low bias voltage in silicon photonic integration. The asymmetric CQWs consisting of two quantum wells with different widths are employed as the active region to enhance the electro-optical characteristics of the device by controlling the coupling of the wave functions. The fabricated device can realize 5 dB extinction ratio at 1446 nm and 1.4 × 10−3 electrorefractive index variation at 1530 nm with the associated modulation efficiency V π L π of 0.055 V cm under 1 V reverse bias. The 3 dB bandwidth for high frequency response is 27 GHz under 1 V bias and the energy consumption per bit is less than 100 fJ/bit. The proposed device offers a pathway towards a low voltage, low energy consumption, high speed and compact modulator for silicon photonic integrated devices, as well as opens possibilities for achieving advanced modulation format in a more compact and simple frame.

Fabric shape style is one of the most important conditions in textile appearance evaluation, and also the main factor influences customer purchasing psychology. At first, the previous fabric shape style evaluation methods are classified and summarized, measurement and evaluation method discussed from tactic and dynamic aspects. Then, companied with computer vision principle, a non-contact method for measuring fabric shape style was put forward. In this method, two high-speed CCD cameras were used to capture fabric movement dynamically, fabric sequences image were obtained in this process. Used the image processing technology include pretreatment and feature point matching to get 3D motion parameters, it can provide data supports for shape style evaluation.

The kinematics of prey capture by the chamaeleonid lizard Chamaeleo oustaleti were studied using high-speed cinematography. Three feeding sequences from each of two individuals were analyzed for strike distances of 20 and 35 cm, at 30°C. Ten distances and angles were measured from sequential frames beginning approximately 0.5 s prior to tongue projection and continuing for about 1.0 s. Sixteen additional variables, documenting maximum excursions and the timing of events, were calculated from the kinematic profiles. Quantified descriptions of head, hyoid and tongue movements are presented. Previously unrecognized rapid protraction of the hyobranchial skeleton simultaneously with the onset of tongue projection was documented and it is proposed that this assists the accelerator muscle in powering tongue projection. Acceleration of the tongue occurred in about 20ms, reaching a maximum acceleration of 486 m s−2 and maximum velocity of 5.8m s−1 in 35 cm strikes. Deceleration of the tongue usually began within 5 ms before prey contract and the direction of tongue movement was reversed within 10 ms of prey contact. Retraction of the tongue, caused by shortening of the retractor muscles, reached a maximum velocity of 2.99 ms−1 and was complete 330 ms after prey contact. Projection distance influences many aspects of prey capture kinematics, particularly projection time, tongue retraction time and the extent of gape and head movements during tongue retraction, all of which are smaller in shorter feedings. Though several features of the chameleon strike have apparently been retained from lizards not capable of ballistic tongue projection, key differences are documented. Unlike members of a related family, the Agamidae, C. oustaleti uses no body lunge during prey capture, exhibits gape reduction during tongue projection and strongly depresses the head and jaws during tongue retraction. Fast-start escape performances for two species of threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus spp., were investigated using high-speed cinematography (400 Hz). The two fishes (not yet formally described, referred to here as benthic and limnetic) inhabit different niches within Paxton Lake, British Columbia, Canada, and are recent, morphologically distinct species. All escape responses observed for both species were double-bend C-type fast-starts. There were no significant differences between the species for any linear or angular parameter (pooled averages, both species: duration 0.048 s, distance 0.033 m, maximum velocity 1.10 m s-1, maximum acceleration 137 m s-2, maximum horizontal angular velocity 473.6 rad s-1 and maximum overall angular velocity 511.1 rad s-1). Benthics and limnetics have the greatest added mass (Ma) at 0.3 and 0.6 body lengths, respectively. The maximum Ma does not include the fins for benthics, but for limnetics the dorsal and anal fins contribute greatly to the maximum Ma. The deep, posteriorly placed fins of limnetics enable them to have a fast-start performance equivalent to that of the deeper-bodied benthics. Both the limnetic and benthic fishes have significantly higher escape fast-start velocities than their ancestral form, the anadromous threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus, suggesting that the high performance of the Paxton Lake sticklebacks is an evolutionarily derived trait. In this biomechanical study of functional morphology, we demonstrate that similar high fast-start performance can be achieved by different suites of morphological characteristics and suggest that predation might be the selective force for the high escape performance in these two fishes.

Introduction: The paper describes the automatic procedure, implemented in UIC software TrainDy, for the simulation of friction coefficient of new LL shoes, used to avoid noise from freight traffic. Method: This procedure uses certified experimental data obtained at dynamometer bench as input data and computes a series of polynomials laws that describe the evolution of friction coefficient with speed, for different values of normal force between brake blocks and wheel and for different initial braking speeds. Result: Numerical results are compared against two series of experimental slip tests, carried on Trenitalia freight wagons, in terms of both stopping distances (for different starting speeds and loading conditions) and pressure in brake cylinder, speed and acceleration. Errors in terms of stopping distance are always below 5% whereas errors in terms of maximum acceleration are up to 20%.

Abstract Research purpose. The high-speed railway (HSR) construction project in the Baltic States is the largest joint infrastructure project since the restoration of independence of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Rail Baltica (RB) is considered as the most energy-efficient project having the lowest environmental impact. However, the issue of energy consumption of the project was not sufficiently addressed either in the investment justification of the RB construction or in the relevant research works regarding the project. The aim of the current research is to determine the indicators of energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions intensity of the Latvian section of RB, since they are the key factors of the quantitative assessment of sustainability. Design/Methodology/Approach. Critical analysis of the academic research works and reports of the official international organizations dedicated to the topic of energy consumption and CO2 emissions of HSR was conducted prior to the calculation of the above-mentioned indicators. The method of calculation based on International Union of Railways (UIC) was used in order to conduct the cluster analysis within the framework of current work. The main points considered are electricity consumption, carbon dioxide emissions, and level of passenger and freight demand. Statistical databases of UIC and International Energy Agency were used. Findings. The calculations carried out by the authors of the given article demonstrate substantial figures of CO2 emissions intensity for Latvian section of the project related to the train load rate and traffic intensity which is evened out only by the CO2 emissions factor in Latvia. Originality/Value/Practical implications. On this basis the authors present the directions for future research required for the development of the effective strategy for the Latvian Republic with the aim of achieving the increase in the RB project’s ecological efficiency.

Abstract This research designs an absolute-value detector with the function of threshold comparing. Specifically, it is an essential device in the spike detection of the brain-machine interface. The optimized design in the research can accomplish the main functions in spike detection and has good performance in both delay and energy consumption. It comes up with two types of design at the beginning. To make the design reliable and comprehensive, it decides to discuss both methods in this paper. The first design is using a full adder, multiplexer and comparator. The concept of its logic circuit is adding the logic one to the input when the given input data is negative, keeping the original information as the given input data is positive. To achieve the function of adding, this study chooses the full adders. The primary purpose of using multiplexers is to select from the processed input and original input, and the choice depends on the most significant bit (MSB) of the input data. To compare the absolute value of the input data with a given threshold, this research used a multi-bit comparator. The second design is based on the fundamental algorithms of calculating total numbers. It indicates that this study can operate it with the threshold value through a subtractor when the input is negative. On the contrary, an adder can be used when the information is positive. Based on the concept of logic optimization, this study chooses to use the only subtractors, and it just needs to focus on the borrow bit, which can indicate the more significant number. By connecting the MSB of the input with the subtractors through XOR gates, the selection can be achieved without using any multiplexer. In the process of removing and replacing the devices, it reached the optimization of the design. Then, this paper compared the minimum delay by calculating each stage’s size and finding that the second design is better. Finally, based on the dual design, this essay computed the energy consumption in the circuit and implement VDD optimization to obtain the minimum energy.
