Abstract FT-IR spectroscopy is a significant method to detect the heat treatment of gemstones, especially ruby and sapphire. There are a set of certain peaks, i.e., 3309, 3232, and 3185 cm−1 in the FT-IR spectra used as an indicator to determine whether the samples have been undergone heat treatment. In this study, however, new evidence has emerged. The O-Al-O bending vibration peak at the fingerprint region around 600-700 cm−1 has been suggested as new clues to define the heated stones. The blue sapphire samples were prepared, then the heat treatment was performed separately at 800, 1000, 1200, 1400, and 1650 °C under an oxidizing atmosphere with a soaking time of 1 hour. The energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) shows that there is no significant difference in the chemical composition of Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, and Ga2O3 between unheated and heated samples. The alteration of blue color and the UV-Vis absorption spectra are also difficult to classify. When comparing the samples at each heating temperature, the alteration of blue color was not related to one another because the color of the samples was decreased depending on those of the unheated ones. The FT-IR spectra revealed that the broad absorption peak of O-Al-O bending at approximately 650 cm−1 was slightly shifted to a lower wavenumber (630 – 635 cm−1) after the samples were heated at higher temperatures. The broad absorption peak also turned into a sharper one when the sample has undergone heating at ≥1000 °C. It is suggested that the peak is related to the rearrangement of the Al2O3 structure of the blue sapphire sample after heat treatment.

Well-dispersed α-Fe2O3 nanocrystalline was prepared by a convenient self-propagation combustion method using low-toxic glycine as fuel, low-cost Fe (NO3)2·9H2O as raw materials. The XRD results indicate that the glycine doses have an important effect on the control of the average size and the order of the crystalline phase. The UV-vis results indicate that the α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals prepared by this method have a broad absorption peak whose center is at about 221 nm. TEM images revealed that the products were composed of well-dispersed particles with an average size about 35 nm.

Abstract So for, there were no definite molecular markers in most acute myeloid leukemia(AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome(MDS), and their molecular mechanisms have not been clarified. Their clinical diagnosis were mainly based on morphology of bone marrow and peripheral blood cells. The current study aimed to explore the mechanisms of abnormal DNA molecular structure in AML and MDS by Fourier Transform Infrared(FT-IR) spectra, and to explore the methods of early diagnosis and prognosis. At first, we segregated the mononuclear cells of AML-M2a, MDS and control groups samples, extracted the DNA of these cells, then we checked the completely dry DNA by FT-IR spectra and analysed the identity and difference among AML-M2a, MDS and Control groups. Comparing the mean DNA spectra of the AML-M2a, MDS and control groups revealed statistically significant difference(p<0.001). Each group has an almost concordant FT-IR spectra rule. Compared with the control group, AML-M2a and MDS both were significant different(p<0.001). Absorbance increasing of DNA in AML-M2a, MDS at the wavenumber 2880cm-1 and 2940cm-1 shown hypermethylation of nucleotide base(p<0.001). Absorbance decreasing at wavenumber 1420cm-1 demonstrated deacetylation(p<0.001). Absorbance decreasing at wavenumber 1150cm-1 indicated the abnormality of C—O,S=O,C—OH,C—C,C—O—C,C—N, and the absorbance increasing at wavenumber 1660–1590cm-1 reflected in-plane ring, C=N stretching vibrations and hypermethylation of cytosine. There were also other mild difference among AML-M2a, MDS and control groups. In summary, The principal chain, phosphonic backbone and nucleotide base of DNA in AML-M2a and MDS have significant difference with the control and could be the initial changes of DNA in AML and MDS occurrence and development. Based on the rules of change, FT-IR spectra is a potential method of early diagnosis and prognosis in AML and MDS.

Crude water-extracted pectin (WEP) isolated from creeping fig seeds were mainly fractionated into WEP-0.3 and WEP-0.4 fractions. Fractions were confirmed to be nonstarch, nonreducing sugars, nonpolyphenols and protein-unbounded acidic polysaccharides. Interestingly, a significant difference in solubility was found between WEP-0.3 (higher solubility than WEP) and WEP-0.4 (remarkably insoluble), which was consistent with the amorphous and porous sponge-like structure of WEP-0.3 as well as the crystalline and dense rod-like state of WEP-0.4. However, the result of the FT-IR spectra was contradicted by the solubility of WEP-0.4, which possessed the lowest degree of methoxylation and ought to possess the highest solubility. Through mineral analysis, a considerably high content of Ca2+ was found in WEP-0.4, suggesting that the low solubility of WEP-0.4 was probably attributable to the formation of microgels during dialysis. Therefore, metal divalent cations in the dialysate were suggested to be depleted for the dialysis of low methoxyl pectin.

Polyaniline doped with camphorsulfonic acid (PANI.HCSA) nanofibers have been successfully prepared using “nanofibers template” via electrospinning. The PVA nanofibers were used as a template to get the PANI/PVA composite fibers. After removing the template by heat treatment, the PANI fibers were obtained. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) with the Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometer software (EDX) and FT-IR spectra were used to characterize the composite fibers and the PANI.HCSA nanofibers. The average diameters of the composite fibers obtained and PANI fibers were 920 nm and 530 nm, respectively.

Extended multiplicative signal correction (EMSC) is used to separate and to characterize physical and chemical information in spectra from Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) microscopy. This appears especially useful for applications in infrared spectroscopy where the scatter variance in spectra changes with the chemical variance in the sample set. In these cases the chemical information of specific bands that are assigned to functional groups is easier to interpret when the scatter information is removed from the spectra. We show that scatter (physical) information in FT-IR spectra of heat-treated beef loin is related to chemical changes due to heat treatment. This information is caused by textural changes induced by the heat treatment and expressed by physical effects as the optical path length. The chemical absorbance changes introduced in the FT-IR spectra due to heat treatment are shifts in the protein region of the infrared spectrum caused by changes in the secondary structure of the proteins. If the scatter and the chemical information is not separated properly, scatter information may erroneously be interpreted as chemical information.

<p>This report is a continuation of previous research on the H2O2-mediated synthesis of melanin-like pigments. We synthesized and characterized L-DOPA-based pigments using air- or H2O2-mediated oxidation. We compared their physic-chemical properties and evaluated their capacity to affect the interleukin release from immune cells. The use of higher concentrations of H2O2 resulted in melanin-like materials with a distinct chemical signature in their FT-IR spectra and a lighter color. All pigments enhanced the interleukin release from immune cells. The possibility that lighter-colored melanins can be generated is discussed in the context of the importance of melanin-based pigmentation in human physiology.</p>

Catalysts were prepared from VOPO4.xH2O.yH3PO4 (x = 0.3-2, y = 0.2-0.85) by reduction with SO2 up to a final temperature of 750-800 °C, and activated in a reaction mixture of 1.0-1.4% butane in air up to 500 °C. The structure characteristics and phase composition of the catalysts were found to be affected by the preparation procedure and heat treatment regime. Their diffraction lines and IR spectra revealed that the catalysts from larger and less defective crystals than catalysts which were obtained from the VOHPO4.xH2O.yH3PO4 precursor and activated in the reaction mixture at temperatures up to 500 °C. In the catalysts prepared by the above procedure, the tendency to the formation of phases of higher-condensed phosphates, in particular VO(PO3)2 or even V(PO3)3, increases with increasing n(P):n(V) ratio and is then more pronounced than with vanadium-phosphorus catalysts prepared by other procedures. The tendency to the formation of the catalytically less active condensed phosphates is partly suppressed by the embedding of modifying metal cations (Fe or Cu in this case).

AbstractVitreous humor (VH) is an alternative biological matrix with a great advantage of longer availability for analysis due to the lack of many enzymes. The use of VH in forensic toxicology may have an added benefit, however, this application requires rapid, simple, non-destructive, and relatively portable analytical analysis methods. These requirements may be met by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy technique (FT-IR) equipped with attenuated total reflection accessory (ATR). FT-IR spectra of vitreous humor samples, deposited on glass slides, were collected and subsequent chemometric data analysis by means of Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis was conducted. Differences between animal and human VH samples and human VH samples stored for diverse periods of time were detected. A kinetic study of changes in the VH composition up to 2 weeks showed the distinction of FT-IR spectra collected on the 1st and 14th day of storage. In addition, data obtained for the most recent human vitreous humor samples—collected 3 and 2 years before the study, presented successful discrimination of all time points studied. The method introduced was unable to detect mephedrone addition to VH in the concentration of 10 µg/cm3. Graphic abstract

A new methodology, based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy equipped with an attenuated total reflectance accessory (ATR FT-IR), was developed for the determination of diclofenac sodium (DS) in dispersed commercially available tablets using chemometric tools such as partial least squares (PLS) coupled with discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The results of PLS-DA depicted a perfect classification of the tablets into three different groups based on their DS concentrations, while the developed model with PLS had a sufficiently low root mean square error (RMSE) for the prediction of the samples’ concentration (~5%) and therefore can be practically used for any tablet with an unknown concentration of DS. Comparison with ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) spectrophotometry as the reference method revealed no significant difference between the two methods. The proposed methodology exhibited satisfactory results in terms of both accuracy and precision while being rapid, simple and of low cost.
