Sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] is cultivated on soils varying widely in chemical properties, but relatively little is known about the effects of pH on the growth of this crop. In commercial and subsistence agriculture, sweet potato is propagated mostly from stem cuttings. This paper reports effects of a range of pH treatments (3.5–8.0) in flowing solution culture on early growth from cuttings of 15 sweet potato cultivars. Root growth was either greatly reduced or inhibited at pH 3.5. Increasing the pH to 4.0 markedly increased root development. Further increases in solution pH from 4.0 to 8.0 did not appear to affect root growth in most cultivars. Top growth in most cultivars showed a tendency to increase when pH was increased from 3.5 to 5.5 before declining with further increases in solution pH. The sweet potato cultivars studied differed widely in their tolerance to low pH, producing 16–48% of maximum top dry mass at pH 3.5. Tissue analysis from selected cultivars showed that K and Ca appeared to be limiting at pH 3.5, while P may have been deficient at pH 8.0. Results of this study indicate that low pH per se does not appear to be a major factor responsible for poor sweet potato yields in acid soils.

A greenhouse study was conducted to investigate the uptake, accumulation and percent recovery of N, P, K, Ca and Mg by sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) cv `TI-155', `Centennial', `Georgia Jet' and `Rojo Blanco'. These cultivars were grown in a fritted clay medium and harvested after 42 and 32 days. There were no significant difference in total elements uptake among the cultivars at 42 days. However, Georgia Jet accumulated more P and K than TI-155 and had higher levels of K than Rojo Blanco at day 82. Total accumulation of elements increased significantly from 42 to 82 days. Leaves accounted for most of the plant N at both harvest periods. Storage roots contained significantly more K than leaves, vines or fibrous roots. Percent N, P and K uptake was significantly lower at 42 than at 82 days. Cultivars also had no significant difference in percent uptake at day 42. However, at day 82, Georgia Jet showed a significantly higher P and K percent recovery than Rojo Blanco.

Aluminium being one of the most abundant elements is very toxic for plants causing inhibition of nutrient uptake and productivity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of microbial consortium consisting of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF), rhizobia and PGPR for counteracting negative effects of Al toxicity on four pea genotypes differing in Al tolerance. Pea plants were grown in acid soil supplemented with AlCl3 (pHKCl = 4.5) or neutralized with CaCO3 (pHKCl = 6.2). Inoculation increased shoot and/or seed biomass of plants grown in Al-supplemented soil. Nodule number and biomass were about twice on roots of Al-treated genotypes after inoculation. Inoculation decreased concentrations of water-soluble Al in the rhizosphere of all genotypes grown in Al-supplemented soil by about 30%, improved N2 fixation and uptake of fertilizer 15N and nutrients from soil, and increased concentrations of water-soluble nutrients in the rhizosphere. The structure of rhizospheric microbial communities varied to a greater extent depending on the plant genotype, as compared to soil conditions and inoculation. Thus, this study highlights the important role of symbiotic microorganisms and the plant genotype in complex interactions between the components of the soil-microorganism-plant continuum subjected to Al toxicity.

Whether kūmara ‘sweet potato’ (Ipomoea batatas) arrived in South Polynesia with initial colonisation or later is discussed in the light of recent evidence from East Polynesia and by examination and statistical modelling of radiocarbon ages associated with kūmara arrival and dispersal in New Zealand. Largely unresolved difficulties in radiocarbon dating of horticultural sites preclude reaching a secure conclusion about the relative timing of kūmara introduction, but strong evidence emerges of delayed dispersal southward and inland of kūmara cultivation. In the short New Zealand chronology this may have been more significant than the date of arrival for the role of kūmara cultivation in economic and political change.

This report relates sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas Poir.) purchases to the characteristics of the homemaker. The analysis does not obtain parameter estimates of the consumption function for sweet potatoes. Rather, it formulates a series of hypotheses for testing that are suggested by economic theory. A multivariate analysis was applied to the data obtained from a consumer survey regarding purchase of sweet potatoes. The results of this study strongly support the gatekeeper theory in household food consumption. Namely, it was found that the consumer purchases of sweet potatoes were significantly related to the specific characteristics of the homemaker and not those of the household. This study supports the premise that for better understanding of food purchase behavior further inquiry should focus on the role of the homemaker as the primary decision-maker. Findings reveal implications for the sweet potato industry: promotional efforts should be directed towards the young homemaker, emphasizing ease and quickness of preparation.

<p>Liver is an organ with complex metabolism. When the liver is inflamed, cellular immunity will defend against inflammatory agents by stimulating immune cells to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). Excessive ROS accumulation cause oxydative stress with increased  liver malondialdehyde (MDA) level. Some researches showed that purple sweet potato contain flavonoids (anthocyanins) that functioned as antioxydants. This study aimed to show the prophylactic effect of purple sweet potato extract to the liver MDA level of male Wistar rats induced by carrageenan.</p><p>This study used post-only control group method using 18 male Wistar rats divided into 3 groups: group of rats without treatment, group of rats induced by 0,1 ml of 1% carrageenan by intraplantar injection on day-8, and group of rats given with 872 mg/kgBW of purple sweet potato extract for 7 days and induced by 0,1 ml of 1% carrageenan. In the end of the study, the liver MDA levels were measured by Thio-Barbituric Acid method on each groups.</p><p>The results of One-Way ANOVA test showed there was no significant difference (p = 0,290) between group of rats without treatment (<em>x̅</em>= 207,50) and group of rats induced by carrageenan (<em>x̅</em>=233,17). Then, there is no significant difference (p = 0.978) between group of rats induced by carrageenan and group of rats given with prophylactic purple sweet potato extract and induced by carrageenan (<em>x̅</em>= 232,50).</p><p>The conclusion of this study is giving intraplantar injection of carrageenan can increase liver MDA level insignificantly and giving prophylactic purple sweet potato extract has an effect to decrease the liver MDA level of rats induced by carragenan insignificantly because it contains anthocyanins as antioxidants.</p><p> </p><strong>Keywords: </strong>Liver, <em>Ipomoea batatas</em> L., Malondialdehyde, Anthocyanins
