Abstract Mode choice by travellers is carried out with several considerations. The interesting point is, some public transport users have their private vehicles. No research has described how many travellers can choose the mode and how significant their shift is to mass public transportation. The aim of research was carried out by analysing the potential for selecting mass public transportation by considering the socio-demographic, economic and vehicle ownership characteristics with the variable distance, time and travel costs based on user preferences. According to the special condition, mode choice by rail-based transit mode is called KRL commuter line, bus and private vehicle at Jakarta – Bogor Corridor become research location. Research method of mode choice probability has been developed using Multinomial Logit Model (MLM) by transport cost, time travel and distance variable. A graphical descriptive approach method based on an equation model will then overlay the site to get the results of mode selection pattern using Geographical Information System (GIS). The application of the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) concept will be more effective if there is a transit-based mass transportation mode such as Rail-based Commuter Line (KRL) as an option, besides travellers also having private vehicles. The Result of this research is described by transport cost, travel distance, and time travel based on the revealed preference survey by 324 respondents. 50% of private car travellers are influenced by trip distance, but probability decreases if time travel increases and they switch to public transport. Users consider choosing a commuter line if the walk distance to the station is about 200 meters. On the other side, increase transport costs makes some travellers choose bus mode.

One aspect of Kuching City that has not progressed in tandem with the rest of the city is the public transport system, which is relatively old and almost non-existent. Transport and City planners seem to be at their wit’s end in coming up with satisfactory solutions to Kuching’s public transportation woes. In current situation, many proposals, but none have proven workable. As a result, representative buses remain a rare sight on Kuching city’s roads. To achieve a sustainable public transport industry, the old buses need to be regenerated and replaced with modern buses. The objectives of the intended study are to explore the consumer’s travel behaviour by employing mode choice modelling. Consequently, a study was conducted in Kuching City Area by using stated preference technique, analysed and compiled by using SPSS.17 multiple linear regressions analysis. In this context, discrete choice analysis was used to examine the relationship between independent variables (travel time, waiting time, fares and comfort) and dependent variables (choice of respondent whether to consume old bus or choose new bus services). A total of 2000 respondents were interviewed. The findings showed that for the trips purpose, fares and comfortability were the primary factors that reflected the decision or behaviour of the respondents asked. It was discovered that there is a significant relationship between the choice of the respondents and comfortability. It also appeared that longer travel time did not affect for the traveler’s choice at this stage. Hence, the study suggests that the local authority and the bus operators should establish a “quality partnership” and working together in order to come out with a much better and appropriate transport policy and schemes for the existing public transportation systems, especially bus services.

The threat to women safety, especially on road, has become a major concern these days and the problem is increasing dramatically. Women are unsafe not just in the night but also in the day, they fear getting assaulted not only in public transport but also while travelling in cars and two-wheelers. People are harassed on road in various ways like robberies, killings, etc., but women go through even bigger traumas. Cases like, rape in moving cars, sexual assault and robberies by forcefully stopping the vehicle, teasing women on two-wheelers, etc. have increased to an alarming level. This study is an initiative to safe-guard the self-esteem of our women and prevent them from any ugly experience, while on road. It aims to find and suggest the safest path for women and tells the level of crime of the locations in that path, while travelling from one place to another. The system determines the various paths from source to destination, as entered by the user on the map interface, by calculating the danger index. This index is found on the basis of the crime rate of the grouped locations. These locations are grouped by clustering them on the basis of the crime history of that location. The app as a result suggests the best three paths in different colours (Green, Red, Yellow).

The increasing number of private vehicles shows that the public transportation system in Makassar has not been maximized. this is also due to the absence of other alternative public transportation modes that can be used by the community in their activities. This study aims to determine the preference of public modes of choice if offered other alternatives, especially public transport with greater capacity. Public transportation offered in this study is busway and monorail. In this study the community was faced with 3 modes of choice namely city transportation, monorail, and busway. The data collection method used was a survey with stated preference based questionnaires, which reviewed nine conditions for variable change in travel speed. The construction of the model was carried out using STATA software and city transportation was used as the base outcome. The model is based on discrete selection models and is analyzed by the multinomial logit model. The results showed that in the nine conditions of change in travel speed, the mode of city transportation was still more dominantly chosen by the community.

The purpose of this study is to find a model for implementing policies on the development of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) based on mass public transportation in DKI Jakarta Province, Indonesia. This research uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques such as observation, in-depth interviews and literature study. Policy choices for developing mass public transportation based on BRT seem to remain a rational choice for overcoming traffic congestion in Jakarta. The ideal model of policy implementation to be developed in the future is an integrated BRT-based mass transit public transport policy model, not only paying attention to its sustainability but also being just.

Abstract. This study represents the final stage of an investigation into understanding the variation in bus map design and the impact of map design preferences in public transportation information portrayal, with a particular focus on Malaysia. In many cities, bus services represent an important facet of easing traffic congestion and reducing pollution. However, with the entrenched car culture in many countries, persuading people to change their mode of transport is a major challenge. To promote this modal shift, people need to know what services are available and where (and when) they go. Bus service maps provide an invaluable element of providing suitable public transport information, but are often overlooked by transport planners, and are under-researched by cartographers. There are various approaches to the design of bus maps, but it is always an issue for the authorities to understand which designs are preferred by the public and which perform best in conveying the required information. A total of 100 Malaysians completed six journey-planning tasks using two network bus maps, which were different in designs. The two bus map designs involved in this study are based on previous map analysis research.

The study found that majority of respondents were competent as they successfully completed the journey planning task, with more than 80 percent of the tasks being answered correctly. Additional enquiries proved that the effective design used in a bus map can attract more users to use public transportation, thus provide evidence that map availability can play a part in enhancing public transport ridership.

The subject matter of this study pertains to the population of Aizawl city, Mizoram. The data is based on the usage of public or private transportation by individuals irrespective of their ownership of private vehicles. The sample includes respondents who are teachers,high-school and college teachers taken separately, of all age groups, different educational backgrounds, as also different income levels who are mobile, belonging to Aizawl city and around. The study examines only the demand side factors influencing travel decisions. The supply side aspects, relating to public transports are taken as given. A study of this kind is beneficial to many parties like the government in its policy implication and also to the private entities as it is directed towards reduced travel expense. Insight of the mechanisms of the travel decision process will benefit governments to formulate policies that better address consumers needs in transport. The study will also enable public transport managers to understand their consumers needs preference and psyche. Furthermore, since no study of this nature has been conducted for the city of Aizawl, the present study will contribute to the birth of a recorded empirical work. It will also lead to further, deeper, more significant research in the area. This study attempts to contribute to the understanding of how local public transport demand is affected by different factors. The focus of this study is to examine the cause of preference of public transportation over private or vice versa by passengers. Considering the increased use of public transportation by individuals and especially by those who also own private vehicles, it is important to understand what causes this preference of one means over the other and the personal benefits involved with it. Careful analysis also shows that the respondents prefer private transportation to public. The logit model shows that of the variables affecting transport mode choice by individual among high school teachers that is most significant is accessibility and flexibility of the private transportation. Also the variables affecting transport mode choice by individual among college teachers that is most significant is time issues secondly, accessibility and flexibility of the private transportation which was also observed in the preceding sections of the chapter The small sample size, with little variability across the quantitative variables could be the reason of the low significance, yet high odd ratios.
