The development of the Internet and related communication technologies has had a transformative effect upon social, political, economic, and cultural life. It has also facilitated the emergence of a wide range of crimes that take shape in the spaces of virtual communication. These offenses include technology-oriented crimes such as hacking and the distribution of malicious software; property-oriented crimes such as media piracy, theft, and fraud; and interpersonal offenses such as stalking, harassment, and sexual abuse. In many instances, these crimes serve to entrench and exacerbate existing patterns of victimization, vulnerability, and inequality, along lines of difference related to gender, sexuality, ethnicity, age, and income. The anonymized and globally distributed nature of the Internet creates huge challenges for crime prevention, detection, and prosecution of online offenses.

The article provides insights into information and communication technology (ICT) issues used in the tourism industry. It is argued that information and communication technologies is a driving force behind the tourism industry which contributes to boosting positive effects to a number of internal travel company activities and organizational factors like net cost, market and competition. ICT has become a key impetus to enhance competitiveness of travel companies as well as of tourist destinations, since a wide range of technological advancements has triggered this evolution. Actually, the overall rapid development of information and communication technologies and the Internet, in particular, has dramatically changed the tourism industry making the Internet an effective marketing tool for the entire travel services sector. This tool is of critical significance to both suppliers and consumers in disseminating information, communication and purchasing goods and services online. It has been verified that the major technologies and ICT applications used in tourism are websites; digital marketing; social networks; multimedia; mobile technologies and intelligent environments (IE). A well-designed website proved its effectiveness in promoting customer loyalty to the website and its products. ICTs are changing the way tourism products are sold and apart from that are a powerful tool for marketing research. In tourism, customer reviews and recommendations are of great importance to enhance the travel company attractiveness and promote travel destinations. Apparently, tourist information involves a wide range of graphics and image data representation to ensure positive customer perception to travellers who plan their trip. The evolution of mobile technology and infrastructure is becoming a common attribute of everyday life. In modern market segmentation realia, travel companies need to know how to adapt their market offer at a time of booking and adjust travel services to a great number of customers and market segments. The research results specify that building strong relationships with the external environment will promote better coordination between all the tourism industry stakeholders. The future of tourism is to be focused on customer-centric technologies that will facilitate a more dynamic process of communication between travel companies and their customers.

The Internet poses a number of threats to the safety of young people. Using numerous examples, this article discusses a wide range of such threats, including: cyberstalking; the ‘grooming’ of potential victims of sexual abuse; a new ‘wish list’ scene (where teenagers encourage contact with potential abusers); the creation and distribution of child pornography; and the emergence of services that create child pornography to order. It is suggested that the last has provided individuals with the ability to inflict sexual abuse on young people from a distance, an act the authors have termed virtual sex tourism. The final section of the article suggests that paedophiles and pornographers have been quick to adopt new technology as a means of concealing their activities. The article concludes by warning of the danger of overestimating or underestimating the threats described.

Three key areas in diagnostics will drive the convergence of diagnostic and communication technologies: point-of-care testing, micro-electromechanical systems and biomarker discovery. In addition, the communications revolution means that increasing numbers of people will be able to send data from their home to their doctor using the Internet. Also, the widespread availability of broadband opens up the possibly of realtime videoconferencing with clinicians. It is already possible for patients at home to monitor simple variables, such as heart rate and blood pressure, and send their results using communication technologies to their doctors, who can promptly review the information to diagnose problems. As diagnostic and communication technologies converge, it will be feasible for patients to transmit more complex health-care data periodically to their doctor, who will be able to identify problems early on and thus modify disease management to prevent exacerbations of patients' medical conditions. This will allow improved patient care in a wide range of health-care situations, from acute medical conditions to chronic disease.

The past two decades have seen the development, diversification, and intensification of information and communication technologies. The result is that society now has unlimited opportunity for communication and access to information. Despite the multitude of benefits, the Internet has propagated new ways to both sexually victimize and exploit children and youth in an online environment and through multiple formats including sexting, child luring and sexual solicitation, and child sexual abuse images online. This chapter explores each of these forms of child exploitation and concludes by outlining the signs and impact of online abuse.

The article deals with a specific polycode text that functions in the field of virtual communication – Internet meme. The focus is on its regular transformations. Considering possible methodological approaches to the analysis of this phenomenon, the author comes to the conclusion about the efficiency of using the methodology of intertext linguistic theory. The essential characteristic of a meme is its transformational potential, which allows to create new meanings and use this communication unit in a wide range of relevant contexts. The polycode structure of a meme determines the spectrum of its potential transformations by changing the verbal and visual elements. The material of observations was one of the most popular memes of 2020 – "Get up, Natasha, we dropped everything". The author identifies 8 meme transformations, which can be considered as regular: development of the visuals with the addition of a verbal element; contraction of the visuals with the same verbal element / transformation of the verbal element; the reframing of the context; pragmatic transformation; intertextual transformation, including the effect of meta-communication; reduction of the image with the same visual markers; reframing with the change of verbal and visual elements; adaptation of the meme in the media texts. The latter transformation indicates the successful inclusion of the Internet meme as a communication element of network coverse in modern discursive practices.

Over the last decade, the Internet of Things (IoT) domain has grown dramatically, from ultra-low-power hardware design to cloud-based solutions, and now, with the rise of 5G technology, a new horizon for edge computing on IoT devices will be introduced. A wide range of communication technologies has steadily evolved in recent years, representing a diverse range of domain areas and communication specifications. Because of the heterogeneity of technology and interconnectivity, the true realisation of the IoT ecosystem is currently hampered by multiple dynamic integration challenges. In this context, several emerging IoT domains necessitate a complete re-modeling, design, and standardisation from the ground up in order to achieve seamless IoT ecosystem integration. The Internet of Nano-Things (IoNT), Internet of Space-Things (IoST), Internet of Underwater-Things (IoUT) and Social Internet of Things (SIoT) are investigated in this paper with a broad future scope based on their integration and ability to source other IoT domains by highlighting their application domains, state-of-the-art research, and open challenges. To the best of our knowledge, there is little or no information on the current state of these ecosystems, which is the motivating factor behind this article. Finally, the paper summarises the integration of these ecosystems with current IoT domains and suggests future directions for overcoming the challenges.

This chapter explores the international and interdisciplinary backdrop of Lincoln Kirstein’s efforts to form an American ballet in the early 1930s. The political, economic, and cultural conditions of the Depression reinvigorated the search for an “American” culture. In this context, new openings for a modernist theory of ballet were created as intellectuals and artists from a wide range of disciplines endeavored to define the role of the arts in protecting against the dangerous effects of mass culture. Chapter 1 sheds new light on well-known critical debates in dance history between Kirstein and John Martin over whether ballet, with its European roots, could truly become “American” in contrast to modern dance. Was American dance going to be conceived in nationalist or transnationalist terms? That was the deeper conflict that underlay the ballet vs. modern dance debates of the early 1930s.

Purpose This paper aims to propose and evaluate a pedagogically sound and innovative strategy to teach a higher education course that prepares future professionals to intelligently use information and communication technologies (ICTs) in their personal and professional lives. Design/methodology/approach The conceptual framework used for the design of the course was the socio-constructivism and activity theories. The implementation of the course was evaluated using the intrinsic case study methodology by including several instruments. Findings The pedagogical strategy proposed proved to be sound, as the evaluation showed that students were able to describe, use and propose innovative uses of a wide range of cutting-edge technologies in their both everyday lives and professional settings; they also had the skills to analyse the opportunities and challenges that these presented. Moreover, students liked this innovative way of learning and ended with a positive attitude towards ICT. Originality/value Although several courses prepare students to be digital citizens or use ICT to enhance the teaching-learning process, millennials are ill prepared to use cutting-edge technologies in an innovative, responsible and critical way in their future professions. The course that was designed is original in that it goes beyond preparing digital citizens to prepare professionals in any domain to use ICT in an informed and responsible way. Moreover, it is a documented, successful example of an undergraduate universal course in a highly important current society dimension. The authors believe that its pedagogical proposal could be transferred to courses dealing with other global issues such as the environment, economy and peace.
