ABSTRACT Background Anemia is a term that describes low hemoglobin concentrations and can result from micronutrient deficiencies, infection, or low birth weight. Early-life anemia, particularly iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is associated with several negative metabolic, developmental, and cognitive outcomes, some of which persist into adulthood. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate alterations in systemic metabolism and fecal microbial diversity and functionality associated with anemia and IDA in male and female infants from Iquitos, Peru. Design Cross-sectional stool and serum samples were collected from 95 infants (53 boys and 42 girls) at 12 mo of age. The fecal microbiome was assessed by using 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing, and the fecal and serum metabolomes were quantified using 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance. Results The prevalence of anemia was 64%, with a greater proportion of anemia in male infants attributed to iron deficiency. Metabolically, anemia was associated with decreased concentrations of tricarboxylic acid cycle metabolites in both sexes (males: succinate, P = 0.031; females: fumarate, P = 0.028). In addition, anemic male infants exhibited significantly lower serum concentrations of several amino acids compared with nonanemic male infants. Although no specific structural or functional differences in the microbiota were observed with anemia in general, likely due the heterogeneity of its etiology, IDA affected the microbiome both structurally and functionally. Specifically, the abundance of butyrate-producing bacteria was lower in IDA subjects of both sexes than in nonanemic, non–iron-deficient subjects of the same sex (females: Butyricicoccus, P = 0.041; males: Coprococcus, P = 0.010; Roseburia, P = 0.027). IDA male infants had higher concentrations of 4-hydroxyphenyllactate (P < 0.001) and putrescine (P = 0.042) than those without IDA, whereas IDA female infants exhibited higher concentrations of leucine (P = 0.011) and valine (P = 0.003). Conclusions Sexually dimorphic differences associated with anemia and IDA are suggestive of greater mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress in male infants compared with female infants, and alterations in microbial structure and function may further contribute. Differences in metabolic pathways associated with anemia and IDA in each sex point to potential mechanisms for the associated lasting cognitive deficits. Iron deficiency anemia among pregnant women is a widespread problem in developing countries including Ethiopia, though its influence on neonatal iron status was inconsistently reported in literature. This cross-sectional study was conducted to compare hematologic profiles and iron status of newborns from mothers with different anemia status and determine correlation between maternal and neonatal hematologic profiles and iron status in Ethiopian context. We included 89 mothers and their respective newborns and performed complete blood count and assessed serum ferritin and C-reactive protein levels from blood samples collected from study participants. Maternal median hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels were 12.2 g/dL and 47.0 ng/mL, respectively. The median hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels for the newborns were 16.2 g/dL and 187.6 ng/mL, respectively. The mothers were classified into two groups based on hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels as iron deficient anemic (IDA) and nonanemic (NA) and newborns of IDA mothers had significantly lower levels of serum ferritin (P=0.017) and hemoglobin concentration (P=0.024). Besides, newborns’ ferritin and hemoglobin levels showed significant correlation with maternal hemoglobin (P=0.018;P=0.039) and ferritin (P=0.000;P=0.008) levels. We concluded that maternal IDA may have an effect on the iron stores of newborns.

Background: The prevalence of anemia in adolescence girls are said to be 42 to 60% in Nepal. Iron deficiency results from prolonged deficit of iron in diet or increased need for iron during a period of intense growth like adolescence. However, the terms anemia, iron deficiency, and iron deficiency anemia are used interchangeably.Aims and Objective: We aimed to find out the prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency in adolescent school girls of Dharan, Nepal by measuring hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels.Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was done in higher secondary schools, including government and private schools, of Dharan conducted by the Department of Basic and Clinical Physiology, B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, Nepal. A total of 150 adolescent school girls of Dharan was selected by systemic random sampling method. Hemoglobin and ferritin levels were analyzed by cyanmethemoglobin method and immunoturbidimetric assay respectively. Descriptive statistics, paired t-test and chi-square test were used.Results: Anemic girls were 33.33% (n=50/150). Anemia with iron deficiency was identified in 17.33% girls (n=26/50) and anemia with normal iron level was in 16 % girls (n=24/50). Normal hemoglobin level with iron deficiency was identified in 9% (n= 14/100) girls and normal hemoglobin with normal ferritin level was in 57% (n=86/100) girls.Conclusions: Prevalence of anemia was less in the adolescent school girls of Dharan, Nepal, than the earlier documented reports in which only half the anemic adolescent girls were iron deficient; suggesting that the remaining other anemic girls had other causes of anemia.Asian Journal of Medical Sciences Vol.8(5) 2017 22-26

<p><em>Iron deficiency anemia is anemia caused by iron deficiency in the blood. Maternal iron deficiency affects the low iron reserves in neonates </em><em>and it also influences on </em><em>Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF) </em><em> which affects cognitive function.</em><em> </em><em>The purpose of this study was to determine the difference mean of BDNF in neonates from normal pregnant women and pregnant women with iron deficiency. </em><em>The design of this research was Cross Sectional</em><em> </em><em>design. This research was conducted in Community Health Center of Lubuk  Buaya, Ambacang Community Health Center, Community Health Center of Ikur Koto Health Center and Biomedical Laboratory of Andalas University on February 2017 to April 2018. There were 42 pregnant women was selected as sample e of this research. The samples were chosen by Consecutive Sampling. Then, the sample is divided into two groups: normal pregnant women and pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia. BDNF are examined by the ELISA. Next, the data were analyzed by using T test. The levels of BDNF neonates in normal pregnant group was 3.65(ng/ml) and the anemia pregnant group was 1.74(ng/ml) (p &lt;0.05). There was significant difference of BDNF levels in neonates from normal pregnant women and pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia. </em><em>The conclusion of this study is there is a difference of average BDNF in neonates from normal pregnant women and pregnant women with iron deficiency.</em></p><p> </p><p>Anemia defisiensi besi adalah anemia yang disebabkan karena kekurangan zat besi dalam darah. Defisiensi besi  maternal berdampak pada rendahnya cadangan besi pada neonatus dan berdampak terhadap ekspresi Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF) yang berpengaruh pada fungsi kognitif. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan rerata kadar BDNF pada neonatus dari ibu hamil normal dan ibu hamil defisiensi besi. Desain penelitian ini adalah Cross Sectional. Penelitian dilakukan di Puskesmas Lubuk Buaya, Puskesmas Ambacang, Puskesmas Ikur Koto dan Laboratorium Biomedik Universitas Andalas pada bulan Februari 2017 – Juli 2018. Sampel Penelitian adalah ibu hamil sebanyak 42 orang yang dipilih secara Consecutive Sampling, sampel dibagi menjadi dua kelompok yaitu ibu hamil normal dan ibu hamil anemia defisiensi besi. BDNF diperiksa dengan metode ELISA. Data dianalisa menggunakan uji T test. Kadar BDNF neonatus pada ibu kelompok normal adalah 3,65(ng/ml) dan kelompok ibu anemia adalah 1,74(ng/ml) (p&lt;0,05). Terdapat perbedaan bermakna kadar BDNF pada neonatus dari ibu hamil normal dan ibu anemia defisiensi besi. <em></em></p>

Anemia is a multifactorial condition, with a complex etiology that involves nutritional and non-nutritional factors. The misconception that iron deficiency is equivalent to anemia may mask the need to address other potential causative factors. This review paper aims to (1) assess the burden of anemia vs. iron deficiency anemia (IDA) amongst women of reproductive age (WRA), pregnant women (PW), and children under five years old (underfive children, U5C) in the Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR); (2) evaluate trends in anemia prevalence and whether countries are on track towards meeting the World Health Assembly (WHA) target for 2025; and (3) characterize anemia reduction efforts and provide a road map for future programs. A search of pertinent literature and databases was conducted. Anemia prevalence in the EMR ranged between 22.6% and 63% amongst PW, 27% and 69.6% amongst WRA, and 23.8% and 83.5% amongst U5C. Data showed that the EMR is not on course towards meeting the WHA target. The contribution of IDA to anemia was found to be less than half. Other potential contributors to anemia in the region were identified, including micronutrient deficiencies, parasitic infestations, and poor sanitation. A framework of action was proposed as a roadmap to meet the targets set by the WHA.

Abstract Background: Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia have been shown to have negative effects on aspects of perception, attention, and memory. Objective: The purpose of this investigation was to assess the extent to which increases in dietary iron consumption are related to improvements in behavioral measures of perceptual, attentional, and mnemonic function. Methods: Women were selected from a randomized, double-blind, controlled food-fortification trial involving ad libitum consumption of either a double-fortified salt (DFS) containing 47 mg potassium iodate/kg and 3.3 mg microencapsulated ferrous fumarate/g (1.1 mg elemental Fe/g) or a control iodized salt. Participants' blood iron status (primary outcomes) and cognitive functioning (secondary outcomes) were assessed at baseline and after 10 mo at endline. The study was performed on a tea plantation in the Darjeeling district of India. Participants (n = 126; 66% iron deficient and 49% anemic at baseline) were otherwise healthy women of reproductive age, 18–55 y. Results: Significant improvements were documented for iron status and for perceptual, attentional, and mnemonic function in the DFS group (percentage of variance accounted for: 16.5%) compared with the control group. In addition, the amount of change in perceptual and cognitive performance was significantly (P < 0.05) related to the amount of change in blood iron markers (mean percentage of variance accounted for: 16.0%) and baseline concentrations of blood iron markers (mean percentage of variance accounted for: 25.0%). Overall, there was evidence that the strongest effects of change in iron status were obtained for perceptual and low-level attentional function. Conclusion: DFS produced measurable and significant improvements in the perceptual, attentional, and mnemonic performance of Indian female tea pickers of reproductive age. Abstract Background Medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) is a common lower leg injury experienced by runners. Although numerous risk factors are reported in the literature, many are non-modifiable and management of the injury remains difficult. Lower leg muscle structure and function are modifiable characteristics that influence tibial loading during foot-ground contact. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether long-distance runners with MTSS displayed differences in in vivo lower leg muscle structure and function than matched asymptomatic runners. Methods Lower leg structure was assessed using ultrasound and a measure of lower leg circumference to quantify muscle cross-sectional area, thickness and lean lower leg girth. Lower leg function was assessed using a hand-held dynamometer to quantify maximal voluntary isometric contraction strength and a single leg heel raise protocol was used to measure ankle plantar flexor endurance. Outcome variables were compared between the limbs of long-distance runners suffering MTSS (n = 20) and matched asymptomatic controls (n = 20). Means, standard deviations, 95 % confidence intervals, mean differences and Cohen’s d values were calculated for each variable for the MTSS symptomatic and control limbs. Results MTSS symptomatic limbs displayed a significantly smaller flexor hallucis longus cross-sectional area, a smaller soleus thickness but a larger lateral gastrocnemius thickness than the control limbs. However, there was no statistical difference in lean lower leg girth. Compared to the matched control limbs, MTSS symptomatic limbs displayed deficits in maximal voluntary isometric contraction strength of the flexor hallucis longus, soleus, tibialis anterior and peroneal muscles, and reduced ankle plantar flexor endurance capacity. Conclusions Differences in lower leg muscle structure and function likely render MTSS symptomatic individuals less able to withstand the negative tibial bending moment generated during midstance, potentially contributing to the development of MTSS. The clinical implications of these findings suggest that rehabilitation protocols for MTSS symptomatic individuals should aim to improve strength of the flexor hallucis longus, soleus, tibialis anterior and peroneal muscles along with ankle plantar flexor endurance. However, the cross-sectional study design prevents us determining whether between group differences were a cause or effect of MTSS. Therefore, future prospective studies are required to substantiate the study findings.
