ABSTRACT The study of a selected set of 69 double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2) with well-defined visual and spectroscopic orbits was carried out. The orbital parallax, the mass, the colour, and the luminosity of each component were derived from observational data for almost all of these systems. We have also obtained an independent estimation of the component masses by comparing the colour–magnitude diagram (CMD) to the stellar evolution tracks reported by Pietrinferni. Nearly all of the observational points on the CMD are located between two tracks of slightly different mass or which fall very close to the one corresponding to a unique mass value. The masses obtained from the stellar model are in good agreement with their empirical values determined by parallax techniques (orbital, Gaia, and dynamical). This means that our adopted model is rather reliable and can therefore be used to infer further information, such as the age of each component in the studied systems. Our results indicate a fair correspondence between the age of primaries and secondary stars within 3σ. Nevertheless, we caution that these age indications suffer of uncertainties due to both inhomogeneities/low precision of the adopted photometric data and possible systematics. Finally, it is statistically shown that along with the orbital and trigonometric parallaxes, the dynamical parallax can serve as a reliable tool for distance estimates.

In the wide field of research covered by the Commission considerable progress has been made in recent years, and it is only possible here to touch briefly on the results of a few lines of investigation, without any attempt to completeness.Stellar luminosities. On the basis of the new list of Mount Wilson spectroscopic parallaxes and a compilation of the long series of modern trigonometric parallaxes A. van Maanen finds 617 objects within a distance of 20 parsecs from the sun. It is very doubtful, however, if we know all the stars even in the region of 5 parsecs radius. Almost all the known stars within 20 parsecs belong to the main sequence, the faintest star being of absolute magnitude +16.6. The most interesting deviations from the main sequence are the three “white dwarfs”, Сотр. of Sirius, Comp. o2 Eridani, and van Maanen’s F type star. G. P. Kuiper lists 3 additional white dwarfs at larger distances which were estimated to be of types Bo, B7 and A2. For the first two stars, A.C. 70°8247 and Wolf 1346, a revision of the spectral types by Adams and Humason gives A2 and A5, respectively, although the spectra differ considerably from normal ones. The A2 star in Kuiper’s list is the one discovered by Oosterhoff in the region of the cluster h, X Persei; its spectral characteristics have been examined by Öhman and by Humason. The absence of the high-numbered members of the Bahner series and of the continuous absorption at the Balmer limit seems to be an important criterion of such stars. A white dwarf of quite peculiar spectrum (type probably about B8) is the companion of o Ceti discovered spectro-graphically by Joy in 1922. There appear several additional deviations towards faint magnitudes from the main sequence which may be classed more or less safely among the white dwarfs. A few such cases have been discussed at Lund by J. Tuominen.

We propose some empirical formulas relating the masses of the heaviest particles in the standard model (the W, Z, H bosons and the t quark) to the charge of the positron e and the Higgs condensate v. The relations for the masses of gauge bosons mW = (1+e)v/4 and [Formula: see text] are in good agreement with experimental values. By requiring the electroweak standard model to be free from quadratic divergences at the one-loop level, we find: [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], or the very simple ratio (mt/mH)2 = e.

Binary stars provide us with the means to measure stellar mass. Here I present several lists of known O-type stars with reliable mass estimates that are members of eclipsing, double-lined spectroscopic binaries. The masses of young, unevolved stars in binaries are suitable for testing the predictions of evolutionary codes, and there is good agreement between the observed and predicted masses (based upon temperature and luminosity) if the lower temperature scale from line-blanketed model atmospheres is adopted. A final table lists masses for systems in a wide variety of advanced evolutionary stages.

The effects of leakage and blockage on the acoustic performance of particle filters have been examined by using one-dimensional acoustic analysis and experimental methods. First, the transfer matrix of a filter system connected to inlet and outlet pipes with conical sections is measured using a two-load method. Then, the transfer matrix of a particle filter only is extracted from the experiments by applying inverse matrices of the conical sections. In the analytical approaches, the one-dimensional acoustic model for the leakage between the filter and the housing is developed. The predicted transmission loss shows a good agreement with the experimental results. Compared to the baseline, the leakage between the filter and housing increases transmission loss at a certain frequency and its harmonics. In addition, the transmission loss for the system with a partially blocked filter is measured. The blockage of the filter also increases the transmission loss at higher frequencies. For the simplicity of experiments to identify the leakage and blockage, the reflection coefficients at the inlet of the filter system have been measured using two different downstream conditions: open pipe and highly absorptive terminations. The experiments show that with highly absorptive terminations, it is easier to see the difference between the baseline and the defects.

At present, there are many constantly updated guidelines and consensuses on the diagnosis and treatment of osteoarthritis both at home and abroad. The recommendations established using methods of evidence-based medicine has experienced strict research on controlling bias and promoting reproduction rate. As a result, the previous evidence was reevaluated, and a lot of changes were provoked in the diagnosis and treatment concept of osteoarthritis. However, several methods not recommended by foreign guidelines are still in use in the current clinical practice in China. On the one hand, Chinese experts have not reached extensive consensus on whether it is necessary to make changes according to foreign guidelines. On the other hand, almost all the current relevant guidelines are on osteoarthritis, but the lesions around knee joints which, as a whole, bear the largest weight in human body, cannot be ignored. For this purpose, Chinese Association for the Study of Pain (CASP) organized some leading experts to formulate this Chinese Pain Specialist Consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of degenerative knee osteoarthritis (DKOA) in combination with the guidelines in foreign countries and the expert experience of clinical practice in China. The consensus, which includes the definition, pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical manifestation, diagnostic criteria, and treatments of DKOA, is intended to be used by first-line doctors, including pain physicians to manage patients with DKOA.

Hyperspectral imaging is an appropriate method to thoroughly investigate the microscopic structure of internally heterogeneous agro-food products. By using hyperspectral technology, identifying stress symptoms associated with salinity, before a human observer, is possible, and has obvious benefits. The objective of this paper was to prove the suitability of this technique for the analysis of Triticale seeds subjected to both magneto-priming and drought and salt stress conditions, in terms of image differences obtained among treatments. It is known that, on the one hand, drought and salt stress treatments have negative effects on seeds of almost all species, and on the other hand, magneto-priming enhances seed germination parameters. Thus, this study aimed to relate hyperspectral imaging values—neither positive nor negative in themselves—to the effects mentioned above. Two main conclusions were reached: Firstly, the hyperspectral application is a feasible method for exploring the Triticale structure and for making distinctions under different drought and salt stress treatments, in line with the data variability obtained. Secondly, the lower spectral reflectance in some treatments—in the 400–1000 nm segment—is the result of a great number of chemical compounds in the seed that could be related to magneto-priming.

The dominant underwater noise source of a ship is known to be propeller cavitation. Recently, attempts have been made to quantify the source strength using on-board pressure sensors near the propeller, as this has advantages over conventional noise measurement. In this study, a beamforming method was used to estimate the source strength of a cavitating propeller. The method was validated against a model-scale measurement in a cavitation tunnel, which showed good agreement between the measured and estimated source levels. The method was also applied to a full-scale measurement, in which the source level was measured using an external hydrophone array. The estimated source level using the hull pressure sensors showed good agreement with the measured one above 400 Hz, which shows potential for noise monitoring using on-board sensors. A parametric study was carried out to check the practicality of the method. From the results, it was shown that a sufficient recording time is required to obtain a consistent level at high frequencies. Changing the frequency resolution had little effect on the result, as long as enough data were provided for the one-third octave band conversion. The number of sensors affected the mid- to low-frequency data.

Loosely packed sand that is saturated with water can liquefy during an earthquake, potentially causing significant damage. Once the shaking is over, the excess pore water pressures that developed during the earthquake gradually dissipate, while the surface of the soil settles, in a process called post-liquefaction reconsolidation. When examining reconsolidation, the soil is typically divided in liquefied and solidified parts, which are modelled separately. The aim of this paper is to show that this fragmentation is not necessary. By assuming that the hydraulic conductivity and the one-dimensional stiffness of liquefied sand have real, positive values, the equation of consolidation can be numerically solved throughout a reconsolidating layer. Predictions made in this manner show good agreement with geotechnical centrifuge experiments. It is shown that the variation of one-dimensional stiffness with effective stress and void ratio is the most crucial parameter in accurately capturing reconsolidation.

The Aviation Group of the Ministry of Technology (formerly the Ministry of Aviation) is responsible for spending a large part of the country's defence budget, both in research and development on the one hand and production or procurement on the other. In addition, it has responsibilities in many non-defence fields, mainly, but not exclusively, in aerospace.Few developments have been carried out entirely within the Ministry's own Establishments; almost all have required continuous co-operation between the Ministry and Industry. In the past the methods of management and collaboration and the relative responsibilities of the Ministry and Industry have varied with time, with the type of equipment to be developed, with the size of the development project and so on. But over the past ten years there has been a growing awareness of the need to put some system into the complex business of translating a requirement into a specification and a specification into a product within reasonable bounds of time and cost.

Biodegradable polymers are employed in medicine and its further application is expected with eagerness. But the lack of an appropriate processing method retards the progress. To overcome this problem, we have developped a novel three-dimensional microfabrication system. The system design allows us the processing of the free three-dimensional micro-level forms by stacking up melted polymers from the nozzle. Different from the conventional method, we adopted a batch process to supply materials in order to eliminate the prior process that required toxic solvents. In addition, it is possible to handle almost all biodegradable thermoplastic resins by adopting this system. A single layer from the piled-up layers of extruded lines was observed to evaluate the resolution. The lateral and depth resolutions attained are 40 μm and 45 μm, respectively. Biodegradable polymers enable three-dimensional microstructures such as micro-pipes, micro-bends, and micro-coil springs to be manufactured in less than 15 min. The biocompatibility of the newly fabricated structure was evaluated using a cell line (PC12). For this purpose, a small vessel, with a transparent base, was fabricated using PLA and cells were cultivated in it. The results were then compared with the results obtained using the standard method. The mechanical strength of our microstructures was evaluated using a tensile strength test. The tensile strength of the microstructure was lower than the one obtained from the conventional method, but has enough strength for fabrication of medical devices. Our system renders it possible to produce toxic-free, as well as transparent and leakage-free devices. Our system is expected to have potential applications in optimum design and fabrication of implantable devices, especially in tissue engineering.
