As musical director of RKO, Steiner oversaw music in all of the studio’s productions. At the same time, he was writing full scores for RKO’s most important releases. Workaholic by nature, Max loved the creative challenges dictated by such future film classics as Of Human Bondage and John Ford’s The Lost Patrol (a failure when previewed, until Steiner’s music added the missing element of tension). But his round-the-clock schedule was pushing the 46-year-old toward collapse. Finally, during the exhausting production of The Gay Divorcee, starring Astaire and Rogers, Steiner snapped, writing a sarcastic memo to RKO president B. B. Kahane. The twist-filled story of Steiner’s firing and rehiring is told here for the first time. Work was not Max’s only source of anxiety: Adolf Hitler was now chancellor of Germany, and Steiner feared for the safety of his parents in nearby Austria.

Parmenides: Justice as a Clue to the Nature of BeingSkirmantas Jankauskas SummaryThe paper deals with the fundamental problem of philosophy – the problem of being. The research begins with the analysis of the famous poem of Parmenides where, for the first time in the Western tradition of philosophy, the being, apart from being just mentioned, is also provided with a logical foundation. It is demonstrated here that the logically attractive considerations of the second part of the poem both fail to substantiate the discovery of the being and give no hints about its content. The way to deal with the above mentioned problems is found in the typically ignored beginning of the poem. Clues for the explication of the mysterious proem are sought in some Plato’s dialogues. The chariot drawn by steeds in Parmenides’ poem is associated with the representation of the soul as a charioteer driving two steeds in Plato’s Phaedrus, and the ride towards the gates of Night and Day is associated with the concept of the “right way” in Plato’s Symposium respectively. However, attention is focused on Parmenides’ reference that the gate dividing Night and Day is guarded by Justice. An assumption is made that Plato exploits this reference while constructing his ideally just state. Failing to theoretically thematize virtue in Phaedrus, Plato blames writing which incorporates theory for its inability to assimilate the ethical content, but refuses to abandon this undertaking. It is supposed that in The Republic Plato continues his effort of theoretical thematization of virtue by trying to relate the latter to justice which is directly accessible by theory. In striving to enable justice to embrace the content of virtue, Plato is even compelled to make a virtueincorporating philosopher preside over his ideal state. Nonetheless, Plato fails to reach his direct objective in The Republic. However, the action of constructing ideal justice quite unexpectedly reveals the origin of being, i.e. its subordination to the Good. Keywords: being, virtue, justice, theory, truth, the beautiful, the good, society.

Memristor is a new electrical element which has been predicted and described in 1971 by Leon O. Chua and for the first time realized by HP laboratory in 2008. Chua proved that memristor behavior could not be duplicated by any circuit built using only the other three elements (resistor, capacitor, inductor), which is why the memristor is truly fundamental. Memristor is a contraction of memory resistor, because that is exactly its function: to remember its history. The memristor is a two-terminal device whose resistance depends on the magnitude and polarity of the voltage applied to it and the length of time that voltage has been applied. The missing element—the memristor, with memristance M—provides a functional relation between charge and flux, dφ = Mdq. In this paper, for the first time, the concept of (integer-order) memristive systems is generalized to non-integer order case using fractional calculus. We also show that the memory effect of such devices can be also used for an analogue implementation of the fractional-order operator, namely fractional-order integral and fractional-order derivatives. This kind of operators are useful for realization of the fractional-order controllers. We present theoretical description of such implementation and we proposed the practical realization and did some experiments as well.

The circadian clock is integral to the maintenance of daily rhythms of many physiological outputs, including blood pressure. Our laboratory has previously demonstrated the importance of the clock protein period 1 (PER1) in blood pressure regulation in male mice. Briefly, a high-salt diet (HS; 4% NaCl) plus injection with the long-acting mineralocorticoid deoxycorticosterone pivalate (DOCP) resulted in nondipping hypertension [<10% difference between night and day blood pressure (BP) in Per1-knockout (KO) mice but not in wild-type (WT) mice]. To date, there have been no studies that have examined the effect of a core circadian gene KO on BP rhythms in female mice. The goal of the present study was to determine whether female Per1-KO mice develop nondipping hypertension in response to HS/DOCP treatment. For the first time, we demonstrate that loss of the circadian clock protein PER1 in female mice does not significantly change mean arterial pressure (MAP) or the BP rhythm relative to female C57BL/6 WT control mice. Both WT and Per1-KO female mice experienced a significant increase in MAP in response to HS/DOCP. Importantly, however, both genotypes maintained a >10% dip in BP on HS/DOCP. This effect is distinct from the nondipping hypertension seen in male Per1-KO mice, demonstrating that the female sex appears to be protective against PER1-mediated nondipping hypertension in response to HS/DOCP. Together, these data suggest that PER1 acts in a sex-dependent manner in the regulation of cardiovascular rhythms.

This chapter examines the effect of Nazi defeat in Tunisia on German morale. The United Nations received many reports across a number of weeks of a marked deterioration in German “morale.” The defeat in Tunisia, according to these reports, drove home the lesson of Stalingrad and finally shattered the myth of Nazi Germany's invincibility, even for the Nazis. German propaganda was now having to concern itself seriously for the first time with the possibility of defeat. Tales of unrest, of war weariness, even of open opposition were appearing on every hand. For some observers, these items added up to a familiar pattern of impending collapse. The question became urgent whether, in fact, the United Nations had any ground for expecting Germany to repeat the debacle of 1918, from which Adolf Hitler learned a lesson.

Purpose of the study: The main criterion for choosing a model of the organization of the workflow by the employer is the cost-effectiveness and rationality of using labor resources. It is proved that the greatest efficiency of the working process can be achieved through the correct combination of full-time work with elements of part-time employment. It seems possible to enshrine such models of labor relations at the level of the legislation of the EU and individual countries by introducing appropriate amendments to labor legislation. Methodology: Hermeneutics, formal-logical and comparative law were used as the main methodological tools. In addition, the methods of systemic and structural analysis were used to identify the most successful mechanisms for the legal regulation of relations in the field of part-time employment. The study of the provisions of local regulations governing contractual relations was of particular success in achieving the research results. Main Findings: A conclusion was made that the transition to part-time employment can only take place within the labor relations between the employee and the employer. It is achieved through a combination of the means of contractual practices such as early notification of the other party (initiative) and negotiations aimed at resolving all issues related to changing working conditions. It has been found that most of the legislative rules are aimed at workers of medium-sized and large enterprises, certain categories of employees and duration of relations. Applications of this study: The study has an extended practical application. First of all, it can be used for developing the most effective modern mechanisms of part-time employment at the level of national legislation. The conclusions and the results of the study can also be used by companies in developing intra-corporate regulations. Novelty/Originality of this study: All types of effective HR management models based on part-time employment have been identified for the first time based on the transition from full-time to part-time work or vice versa. It was also proved for the first time with the help of scientific methodology, that the transition to part-time employment can only take place within the framework of labor relations between the employee and the employer.

AbstractThis article reports some preliminary results on an analysis of line bisectors of metal absorption lines of RR Lyrae, the prototype of its class of pulsators. The extensive data set used for this study consists of a time series of spectra obtained at various pulsation phases as well as different Blazhko phases. This setup should allow a comparison of the atmospheric behaviour, especially of the function of radial velocity versus depth at differing Blazhko phases, but (almost) identical pulsation phase, making it possible to investigate whether the modulation causes a change in the atmospheric motion of RR Lyrae. While the nature of the Blazhko modulation has often been investigated photometrically and described as a change in the light curve, studies on time series of high resolution spectra are rare. We present for the first time work on line bisectors at different phases of RR Lyr.

The immediate post-war years saw Cary Grant’s box-office drawing power stronger than ever before. Jack Warner had bought out his contract with Columbia so that Grant could play the songwriter Cole Porter in the musical biopic Night and Day (1946). His first Technicolor film, Night and Day is bright and breezy, and it is filled with popular songs. The production, however, was troubled. Grant and director Michael Curtiz were in constant conflict. Grant was much happier working with Alfred Hitchcock and co-star Ingrid Bergman on the next film, Notorious (1946). These three became lifelong friends while making this wonderfully dark, gothic, spy story. Hitchcock was so keen on the darker side of the Cary Grant star persona that he proposed making a film of Hamlet with him, but legal complications prevented this. Grant then had a hiatus from filmmaking that allowed him to travel to Bristol for the first time since 1939. There, he saw his mother and also the terrible damage the city suffered during the blitz. He returned to make one of his most frivolous films, The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947), with Myrna Loy and the child-star turned teenager Shirley Temple. This light-as-a-feather screwball comedy continued his box-office winning streak.

In order to investigate the relationship between induction heating ability of Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2glass ceramics and chemical composition, a series of glass ceramic samples with different chemical compositions were prepared by the sol-gel method. The structural, textural, and magnetic properties of the samples were analyzed and correlated with the Fe2O3content. This is the first time work of its kind that evaluates the relationships between induction heating ability and chemical composition of Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2glass ceramics. The results showed that induction heating ability of Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2glass ceramics increased gradually with increasing magnetite content. Also, the induction heating ability became considerably better when a small amount of phosphorus was introduced. This study thus reveals a methodology to control the induction heating ability of Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2glass ceramics through modifying the chemical composition.

Therapeutic nihilism was at its peak in the late nineteenth century. An excellent example of a drugless therapeutic procedure is that described almost 80 years ago by Dr. H. V. Knaggs. The interest that often attaches itself to simple methods of treatment must be my excuse for resuscitating an old but, at the same time, very little known remedy for preventing the recurrence of ordinary sore throats. Most people, when they hear of it for the first time, are very apt to smile incredulously, and to at once put it down among the category of superstitions, "old women's remedies," etc. In fact, nearly every patient to whom I have suggested it has appeared sceptical of its utility at first, although subsequently a careful trial has frequently convinced them to the contrary. Its prophylactic powers are undoubted. The treatment alluded to consists merely in placing round the neck from ten to twenty threads of Berlin wool. This must be worn continuously night and day, and not taken off except for the purpose of making ablutions. With some cases it is necessary that the wool should be worn all the year round; with others, during the months when the complaint is likely to return. When it is thought desirable to discontinue its use, it should be done gradually by discarding a single thread each day until none are left. If objected to on the score of unsightliness, a small coin or locket may be attached, which will effectually keep the wool out of sight, and, after a time, out of mind. Laryngitic and tonsillitic forms for disease, which are especially prevalent among children, are due in very many instances to exposure and cold, and are particularly apt to recur periodically, especially in the colder and more changeable periods of the year. It is in such cases that the treatment is productive of marked benefit. A considerable number of cases, both among children and adults, have been thus treated in our practice. Observations as to its efficacy have extended over a number of years. Strange as it may seem, scarcely in any single instance has it failed in our hands to avert future attacks. The question naturally arises, How can a simple remedy like a few threads of wool possibly effect this object? or in what manner does it act? In the first place, we know that wool is a bad conductor of heat. Secondly, according to the principles laid down by Dr. Jaeger in his system of sanitary clothing, ventilation is one of the best means at our disposal for promoting skin action, and for retaining the body at an equable temperature both in summer and winter. It is probable, therefore, that the skein of wool, when attached round the neck, keeps up a belt of skin-action, and so acts continuously, and in a slight degree, as a mild counter-irritant.
