Sleeping with the enemy: unravelling the symbiotic relationships between the scale worm Neopolynoe chondrocladiae (Annelida: Polynoidae) and its carnivorous sponge hosts

Abstract The North Atlantic deep-water polynoid worm Neopolynoe chondrocladiae is involved in an exceptional symbiotic relationship with two hosts: the carnivorous sponges Chondrocladia robertballardi and Chondrocladia virgata. While this is an obligate symbiotic relationship, its real nature is unclear. We used a multidisciplinary approach to narrow down the type of symbiotic relationship between symbiont and hosts. Molecular connectivity analyses using COI and 16S suggest that N. chondrocladiae has high potential for dispersal, connecting sites hundreds of kilometres apart, likely aided by oceanographic currents. Microbial analyses on different anatomical parts of five Chondrocladia species suggest that the presence of the worm in C. robertballardi does not affect the microbiome of the sponge. MicroCT analysis on N. chondrocladiae show that it has dorsally oriented parapodia, which might prevent the worm from getting trapped in the sponge. A faecal pellet recovered from the worm suggests that the polynoid feeds on the crustacean prey captured by the sponge, something corroborated by our stable isotope analysis. Light and confocal microscopy images suggest that N. chondrocladiae elytra produce bioluminescence. We propose that the worm might use bioluminescence as a lure for prey (increasing the food available for both the sponge and the polynoid) and thus fuelling a mutualistic relationship.

ABSTRACTAccess to fixed or available forms of nitrogen limits the productivity of crop plants and thus food production. Nitrogenous fertilizer production currently represents a significant expense for the efficient growth of various crops in the developed world. There are significant potential gains to be had from reducing dependence on nitrogenous fertilizers in agriculture in the developed world and in developing countries, and there is significant interest in research on biological nitrogen fixation and prospects for increasing its importance in an agricultural setting. Biological nitrogen fixation is the conversion of atmospheric N2to NH3, a form that can be used by plants. However, the process is restricted to bacteria and archaea and does not occur in eukaryotes. Symbiotic nitrogen fixation is part of a mutualistic relationship in which plants provide a niche and fixed carbon to bacteria in exchange for fixed nitrogen. This process is restricted mainly to legumes in agricultural systems, and there is considerable interest in exploring whether similar symbioses can be developed in nonlegumes, which produce the bulk of human food. We are at a juncture at which the fundamental understanding of biological nitrogen fixation has matured to a level that we can think about engineering symbiotic relationships using synthetic biology approaches. This minireview highlights the fundamental advances in our understanding of biological nitrogen fixation in the context of a blueprint for expanding symbiotic nitrogen fixation to a greater diversity of crop plants through synthetic biology.

In a former paper, ‘The Problem of the Brochs,’ the writer sought to review the culture which appeared in the Western and Northern Islands and on the Northern Mainland in the 1st century B.C. and to clear away some preconceptions which seemed to hinder a realistic understanding of it. It was there suggested that a clue to the real nature of the culture might be found in a study of the ‘wheelhouse,’ a building which had not accumulated round itself those more romantic conceptions of 19th century archaeology, which made of every house a castle and of every mound a tomb; but was accepted for what it was, a dwelling of a working population. In the present paper this clue is followed with the aim of answering some of the questions which the former paper merely posed. A firm point of departure is sought in a farmstead excavated by the writer in Uist, and thence the inquiry is followed through the abundant, if unequally valuable, reports of earlier excavators to a survey of the culture as a whole.The survey will be seen to owe much to the earlier one published by Professor Childe in his ‘Prehistory of Scotland’ in 1935, where, for the first time, elements in the material culture were distinguished which were plainly of South-west British origin and the result of immigration thence. To Dr Alex. Curle it owes a debt which will be apparent without reference to footnotes. It is due to Dr Curle's wide ranging excavations in the wheelhouses, the wags, the brochs and the hut circles of the culture, and to his earthfast judgment in regard to them, that we know more of the Iron Age dwellings in the North, and of the life lived in them, than we know of the habitations of any other part of Britain.

Genetic diversity in modern Arctic communities provides a baseline from which to assess population history. This is augmented by documenting patterns of genetic variation in prehistoric populations using ancient DNA methods, and inferring dietary resource information and adaptive strategies derived from stable isotope analyses. This chapter uses this multidisciplinary approach to examine population history and colonization events in the Aleutians of South Alaska, and the origin and population history of Paleoeskimo and Neoeskimo populations of the North American Arctic. The power to identify past demographic events relies on knowledge of both genetic and isotopic signatures of demographic events, and on acquisition of securely dated and well provenienced samples for analysis.

Abstract. During the 2014 GEOVIDE transect, seawater samples were collected for dissolved Pb and Pb isotope analysis. These samples provide a high resolution snapshot of the source regions for the present Pb distribution in the North Atlantic Ocean. Some of these stations were previously occupied for Pb from as early as 1981, and we compare the 2014 data with these older data some of which are reported here for the first time. Lead concentrations were highest in subsurface Mediterranean Water (MW) near the coast of Portugal, which agrees well with other recent observations by the U.S. GEOTRACES program (Noble et al., 2015). The recently formed Labrador Sea Water (LSW) between Greenland and Nova Scotia is much lower in Pb concentration than the older LSW found in the Western European Basin due to decreases in Pb emissions into the atmosphere during the past 20 years. Comparison of North Atlantic data from 1989–2014 shows decreasing Pb concentrations consistent with decreased anthropogenic inputs, active scavenging, and advection/convection. The nearly-homogenous isotopic composition of northern North Atlantic seawater implies that the relative proportions of U.S. and European Pb sources to the ocean have been relatively uniform during the past two decades. Using our measurements in conjunction with emissions inventories, we support the findings of previous atmospheric analyses that up to 50 % of the Pb deposited to the ocean in 2014 was natural, although it remains unclear if that natural dust is from the mid- or high-latitudes.

AbstractThirteen Zhou Dynasty bronze vessels and two slags from Zongyang County along the north bank of the Yangtze River in Anhui were analyzed by LA-MC-ICP-MS and EDXRF. The results of lead isotope analysis showed that there were two kinds of lead materials in the Zongyang bronzes. Vessels in Class I, thought to have originated from the Wannan region were primarily used during the Western Zhou and the following Spring and Autumn period; while those in Class II, possibly from the local mines in Zongyang County, were mainly present during the Warring States period. Such a shift in the ore material sources is also revealed by the trace element analysis of the Zongyang bronzes. With reference to the relevant historical documents, we suggest that the transformation of the bronze material sources might have been associated with the changes of the political situation during the Zhou Dynasty.

The university establishment process in Konya started in the 1950s for the first time. After 1960s, the institutions giving higher education in the city came into activity, and in 1976 Selçuk University was established. Selçuk University, since its establishment, has lead the single-centered city to develop towards the north, and at the same time, also the campus as a center of attraction has caused a shift of the population concentration to the region. The university, which makes good use of the city's potentials in the change of the city form, also made it possible to create surplus values by using the values that the city has in the fields of agriculture, agriculture industry, and technology. The Selçuk University Alâeddin Keykubat Campus is still a potential force that creates economic surplus, attracts population and shapes the city.

<p>Photosynthetic dinoflagellates of the genus Symbiodinium form symbiotic relationships with many marine hosts, including cnidarian corals and sea anemones. This partnership is extremely successful in tropical waters leading to a great diversity of coral species and Symbiodinium types. Environmental condition in the tropics are stable, changes to which can lead to destabilization of the symbiotic interactions between the host and symbiont, which in turn can lead to total breakdown of the partnership and expulsion of the symbiont. Temperate symbiotic cnidarian species, especially sea anemones, are less common but locally abundant. Environmental conditions are highly variable with extreme differences in light and temperature. Adaptation to these conditions has led to the success of resilient partnerships, but also to less diversity of Symbiodinium types. This study looked at the relationship between the endemic New Zealand anemone, Anthopleura aureoradiata, and its symbiotic relationship with the Symbiodinium cells it harbours. The aim was to determine why and how this symbiotic relationship is so resilient to the temperate conditions by 1) determining the molecular identity of the Symbiodinium spp. within the anemone, throughout its latitudinal range and through the seasons, and whether any seasonal changes differed between two habitats, the rocky shore and mudflats; 2) comparing the identity of the Symbiodinium spp. in New Zealand with those from four species of anemones from Europe (Cereus pedunculatus, Anthopleura ballii and Anemonia viridis from the south-west of England and Aiptasia mutabilis from Brittany (France)) to establish any differences or similarities between the northern and southern hemispheres; 3) determining whether resilience to environmental conditions is attributed to the Symbiodinium photoprotective mechanisms. A. aureoradiata were collected in early autumn in five sites from the top (Parengarenga Harbour) to the bottom (Stewart Island) of New Zealand for the latitudinal study. Seasonal anemones were collected from a rocky shore in Wellington Harbour (Point Halswell, Kau Bay) and a mudflat at Pauatahanui Inlet. Symbiodinium types were identified to subcladal level using ITS2 sequencing. A low diversity of types was found, with all anemones harbouring algal cells identified as being similar, or identical to, Symbiodinium sp. Mediterranean clade A (Med clade A) and Symbiodinium sp. Amed (Amed). 96.55% of the anemones from the latitudinal study, all the winter anemones, 87.50% of the summer anemones and almost 78% of the autumn anemones harboured Symbiodinium cells most similar or identical to Med clade A. All Symbiodinium sequences from the European anemones also were identified as being similar or identical to Med clade A or Amed, suggesting that the Symbiodinium in A. aureoradiata are likely not endemic. It is not known whether anemones harbour both types simultaneously and whether a change in dominant symbiont type occurs with seasons within anemones by “shuffling”.  The photophysiology of the Symbiodinium cells isolated from the anemones was studied using an Imaging-PAM fluorometer whilst being maintained in six light and temperature treatments. The photosynthetic rate of PSII, energy quenching by NPQ, and photosystem recovery were measured to determine whether the Symbiodinium cells had a strong capacity for photoprotection and were able to down-regulate quickly to reduce photodamage to the chloroplast. The main outcome of this study is that the Symbiodinium cells within A. aureoradiata are very effective in protecting themselves against photo-damage by activating an efficient NPQ system. Down-regulation of the quantum efficiency of PSII under high light conditions appeared to cease altogether. Whether this was a true measurement of down-regulation to stop photodamage, or whether these clade A types use an alternative electron transport that bypasses PSII, and can therefore not be measured with the I-PAM fluorometer technique used, needs to be addressed in future studies.</p>

The present study provides new data of the Middle-Upper Triassic successions and their deformation in the eastern Iberian Chain, where contractional tectonics during the Cenozoic disrupted this Mediterranean type of Triassic rocks. The succession, divided into three Muschelkalk units, was studied in the Alt Palància area. In this area, both the lower and upper Muschelkalk consist of two main types of sub-units, those made up of carbonate and those of carbonate-marl alternation. The marked similarity observed between the evaporite units of the middle Muschelkalk and the Keuper humpers their unambiguous discrimination in the field. The integration of geological mapping, stratigraphic logging, palynological dating and gypsum isotope analysis carried out provided that: i) a change in the structural style, facies, and depositional thickness occurs across a SW to NE transect at both sides of the Espina-Espadà Fault, providing evidence for the extensional activity of this major structure; ii) palynological data assign Anisian age to the Röt facies and the lower and the middle Muschelkalk units, and Ladinian to the upper Muschelkalk unit; iii) the δ34SCDT and δ18OSMOW values of gypsum reveal as a useful proxy to discriminate between the middle Muschelkalk (δ34S: 15.6 to 17.8‰) and the Keuper (δ34S: 14 to 15.5‰) units; and iv) the isotopic signature also helps to identify clayey-marly gypsiferous outcrops made up of the two evaporite facies due to tectonic juxtaposition. These results confirm the Mediterranean type of Triassic rocks for the entire Alt Palància and other areas to the NE. This multidisciplinary approach reveals as a robust methodology to study Triassic basins in Iberia and to other geological domains where the carbonate-evaporite successions have been greatly disrupted by tectonism.
