SummaryThe chive gnat, Bradysia odoriphaga, is a notorious pest of Allium species in China. Colour trapping is an established method for monitoring and controlling of Bradysia species. In order to clarify the effect of colour preference of B. odoriphaga for the egg-laying substrate, multiple-choice tests were employed to assess the spontaneous response of the chive gnat to different colour hues and brightness levels under different intensities of white illumination and two spectrally different illuminations. Given the choice among four colours differing in hue under different intensities of white illumination and two spectrally different illuminations, chive gnat adults visited preferably the black substrate, a lesser extent to brown and green substrates, and the least extent to orange substrate irrespective of illumination. Given the choice among four levels of brightness under the same illumination conditions as those in the previous experiment (different intensities of white illumination and two spectrally different illuminations), chive gnats preferred black substrate over dark grey, and these over light grey and white substrates. Meanwhile, both virgin and copulated adults significantly preferred black over other colour hues and brightness. Based on our results, we conclude that the chive gnat adults significantly prefer black substrates irrespective of colour hues and brightness. This behaviour does not alter due to ambient light condition changes. No difference observed between choices of female and male adults. Our results provide new insight for understanding the colour choice behaviour in chive gnat and pave a way to improve monitoring and control of chive gnats and management.Summary statementChive gnat (Bradysia odoriphaga) innately prefer to move to black substrate irrespective of colour hues and brightness. This behaviour maintained the ambient lights change.

This study focused on finding out the effect of applying RAP (Read, Ask,Paraphrase) Strategy on students’ reading comprehension in reading analyticalexposition text. This study was conducted in experimental design. The populationof this research was the second year of students in SMA Swasta Katolik BudiMurni 2 Medan. There were seventy students of the second year senior highschool students as the sample of the research. This study was conducted with tworandomized groups namely Experimental Group and Control Group. Theexperimental group was taught by applying RAP Strategy, while the control groupwas taught by applying conventional strategy. The instrument of collecting thedata was multiple choice tests which consisted of 25 items. The data wereanalyzed by using t-test formula. The calculation shown that t-observed (5.36)was higher than t-table (1.994) at the level of significance (α) 0.05 with the degreeof freedom (df) 68. It means that there was a significant effect of applying RAPStrategy on students’ reading comprehension in reading analytical exposition text.

The aim of this study is to discover the effect of applying SQ3R method inreading comprehension. Experimental research design is used as the research method. This research took place at SMA Nasrani 2Medan. There were 2 classes chosen as thesample with 30 students in each class. The classes were divided into two groups namelyexperimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by using SQ3Rmethod and the control group was taught by using conventional method. The instrumentused to collect the data was a set of multiple choice tests, which divided as pre test andpost test. The result of the research was analyzed by using t-test formula. The resultshowed that t-test was higher than t-table (4,23>2,00) at the level of significant 0,05with degree of freedom (df) 58. It means that hypothesis alternative (Ha) is acceptedwhich shows that SQ3R method significantly improves the student’s readingcomprehension.

This study aims to determine the effect of classroom discussion learning model using Socratic seminar method to the student’s learning result in the heat topic of second semester X Class of SMA Negeri 8 Medan T.P 2013/2014. This research is quasi experimental with research design is Two Group Pretes-Postes Design. The  population in this research was all students in class X which consists of 12 classes and the totaled is 343 students. Class X-8 and X-7 were chosen as an experimental class and control class with random sampling technique. Instrument learning results were contain of multiple-choice tests and observation sheet of student activity in the classroom. Average data of pre-test experimental class and control class are 44,33 and 40,33. In both classes, the pretest data are normally distributed and homogeneous. The ability of students at the beginning of both classes are same as analyzed by t-test. After treatment, the data of learning achievement using posttest, shows average yield of experimental class and control class are 70,17 and 56,50, which are normally distributed and homogeneous. Based on t-test, Ha was accepted and reveal that there is significant influence of classroom discussion learning model using Socratic Seminar method to the student learning outcomes. Keywords   :           classroom discussion, Socratic seminar, quasi experiment, learning results

Misconceptions of a concept in a lesson will have an influence in understanding the next concept. Having misconceptions that exist in learning can understand the nature of the misconceptions and consequently can help student learning progress. Therefore, a diagnostic test for misconceptions is needed, including the newest four-tier multiple choice and five-tier multiple choice. This research is a literature review that provides information systematically using the PRISMA method which often occurs in students' misconceptions in high school physics subjects. The data for this research are 60 selected articles from 2017-2021. The purpose of this study is to reveal the use of four-tier multiple choice and five-tier multiple choice diagnostic tests in physics and also provide a comparison of each instrument with the strengths and weaknesses of the four-tier multiple choice and five-tier multiple choice diagnostic tests. Furthermore, the use of multiple choice four levels (83.33%) and multiple choice five levels (16.67). %). In the use of the four-tier multiple choice physical material diagnostic test, which are often used in identifying misconceptions, are optical devices (12%) and energy businesses (10%). And the use of an additional five-tier multiple choice instrument diagnostic test that is often used is to present an overview or conclusion at the fifth level. However, each type of four-tier multiple choice and five-tier multiple choice tests has its own advantages and disadvantages in assessing students' conceptions

The study is focused on finding out the effect of applying Metacognition Strategy on students’ reading comprehension in reading descriptive text. This study conducted on experimental quantitative design. The population of the research was the Pharmacy students at Institut Deli Husada Deli Tua. There are three hundred forty six students at pharmacy to be the sample of the research. This study was conducted by two randomized groups named Experimental Group and Control Group. The Experimental Group was taught by using Metacognition Strategy but in Control Group didn’t be taught by using Metacogniton Strategy. The instrument of collecting the data was multiple choice tests which consisted of 25 questions. The research Obtain the reliability of the test by using Kuder-Richardson (KR-21) formula. The calculation shown the reliability was 0.57 (Moderate). The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. At the level of significance 0.05 with the deegree of freedom (df) 58, t-observed is 4.1 while t-table is 1.67. Then F-value is 1.41 and F-table is 1.84. It means that there was significant effect of applying Metacogniton strategy on students’ Reading Comprehension in reading descriptive text. So, the conclusion is the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is totally accepted.

The aim of this study is to discover the effect of applying Teams “K-W-L” strategy in reading descriptive text. Experimental research design is used as the research method. This research took place at SMP N 1 SIANTAR NARUMONDA. There were 2 classes chosen as the sample with 30 students in each class. The classes were divided into two groups namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by using Teams “K-W-L” strategy and control group was taught by using conventional method. The instrument was used to collect the data was a set of multiple choice tests, which was divided as pre-test and post-test. The result showed that t-test was higher than t-table (4,53 > 2,00) at the level of significant 0,05 with degree of freedom (df) 58. It means that hypothesis alternative (Ha) is accepted which show that Teams “K-W-L” strategy significantly effected on the students achievement in reading descriptive text. It was proved since mean score of experimental group is 74,83 higher than mean score of control group is 63,33. So, English Teacher are suggested to use Teams” know-want-learn” Strategy in order to improve students’ achievement in reading descriptive text.
