 This paper aims to conduct a series of laboratory experiments in case of steady-state flow for the new size 7 ̋ throat width (not presented before) of the cutthroat flume. For this size, five different lengths were adopted 0.535, 0.46, 0.40, 0.325 and 0.27m these lengths were adopted based on the limitations of the available flume. The experimental program has been followed to investigate the hydraulic characteristic and introducing the calibrated formula for free flow application within the discharge ranged between 0.006 and 0.025 m3/s. The calibration result showed that, under suitable operation conditions, the suggested empirical formulas can accurately predict the values of discharge within an error ± 3%.

The results of a study funded by the U.S. Geological Survey as part of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program are presented. The first objective of this study was the development of a database for all 211 highway bridges along I-55 in the New Madrid region of southeastern Missouri. Profiles for five key dimension parameters (which are stored in the database) were developed, and the results for concrete highway bridges are presented. The second objective was to perform field ambient vibration analyses on 25 typical highway bridge spans along the I-55 corridor to determine the fundamental vertical and lateral frequencies of the bridge spans measured. These 25 spans included six reinforced concrete slab spans and two reinforced concrete box-girder spans. The third objective was to use these bridge frequency results in conjunction with the dimension parameters stored in the database to develop empirical formulas for estimating bridge fundamental natural frequencies. These formulas were applied to all 211 Interstate highway bridges in southeastern Missouri. Profiles for both fundamental vertical and lateral frequencies were then developed, and the results for concrete highway bridges are presented.

Extended Leveque problem is studied for linear velocity profiles, vx(z) = u + qz. The existing analytic solution is reconsidered and shown to be inapplicable for the accurate calculation of mean mass-transfer coefficients. A numerical solution is reported and its accuracy is checked in detail. Simple but fairly accurate empirical formulas are suggested for the calculating of local and mean mass-transfer coefficients.

In many Italian regions, and particularly in southern Italy, karst aquifers are the main sources of drinking water and play a crucial role in the socio-economic development of the territory. Hence, estimating the groundwater recharge of these aquifers is a fundamental task for the proper management of water resources, while also considering the impacts of climate changes. In the southern Apennines, the assessment of hydrological parameters that is needed for the estimation of groundwater recharge is a challenging issue, especially for the spatial and temporal inhomogeneity of networks of rain and air temperature stations, as well as the variable geomorphological features and land use across mountainous karst areas. In such a framework, the integration of terrestrial and remotely sensed data is a promising approach to limit these uncertainties. In this research, estimations of actual evapotranspiration and groundwater recharge using remotely sensed data gathered by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) satellite in the period 2000–2014 are shown for karst aquifers of the southern Apennines. To assess the uncertainties affecting conventional methods based on empirical formulas, the values estimated by the MODIS dataset were compared with those calculated by Coutagne, Turc, and Thornthwaite classical empirical formulas, which were based on the recordings of meteorological stations. The annual rainfall time series of 266 rain gauges and 150 air temperature stations, recorded using meteorological networks managed by public agencies in the period 2000–2014, were considered for reconstructing the regional distributed models of actual evapotranspiration (AET) and groundwater recharge. Considering the MODIS AET, the mean annual groundwater recharge for karst aquifers was estimated to be about 448 mm·year−1. In contrast, using the Turc, Coutagne, and Thornthwaite methods, it was estimated as being 494, 533, and 437 mm·year−1, respectively. The obtained results open a new methodological perspective for the assessment of the groundwater recharge of karst aquifers at the regional and mean annual scales, allowing for limiting uncertainties and taking into account a spatial resolution greater than that of the existing meteorological networks. Among the most relevant results obtained via the comparison of classical approaches used for estimating evapotranspiration is the good matching of the actual evapotranspiration estimated using MODIS data with the potential evapotranspiration estimated using the Thornthwaite formula. This result was considered linked to the availability of soil moisture for the evapotranspiration demand due to the relevant precipitation in the area, the general occurrence of soils covering karst aquifers, and the dense vegetation.

In this paper, the dynamic amplification factors (DAFs) of high-speed railway continuous girder bridges are studied. The vehicle-bridge interactions (VBIs) of 13 concrete continuous girder bridges with spans ranging from 48 to 130 m are analyzed, the influences of the train speed, the train marshalling and the bridge fundamental frequency on the DAF are investigated, and the DAF design standard for high-speed railway bridges is discussed. The results indicate that for the continuous beam bridge whose fundamental frequency is less than 3.0 Hz, the maximum DAF is no more than 1.15; while for the bridge examples with a fundamental frequency larger than 3.0 Hz, the maximum DAF reaches 1.25 because the resonance occurs at high train speed. The empirical formulas of the DAFs in the Japan Railway Technical Research Institute (JRTRI) code could provide a conservative estimation of the DAFs of high-speed railway continuous bridges.

The impression creep test (ICT) method, as a miniature specimen test technique, has been used extensively to determine the in-service creep properties of power plant components. However, the experiment results of the ICT can be affected by some uncertainties associated with the inaccuracies of measurement, which have not been studied before. This paper presents some results of finite element analyses, to evaluate the effect of indenter misalignment on the results of the ICT, such as the steady-state creep deformation rate and the conversion parameters. The results obtained have shown that the angular misalignments of the indenter around horizontal directions have a relatively significant influence on the conversion parameters, and the misalignment around vertical direction has a much less significant effect. Empirical formulas were developed for the possible correction of the conversion factors. Finally, some recommendations on the control of the indenter and specimen alignment were given.

The correct operation of the continuous welded track requires diagnosing its condition and preparation of track metrics requiring measurements of displacements of rail under operation. This is required as there are additional thermal stresses in the rails with values depending on the temperature changes of the rails. Therefore, the climatic conditions are important. This paper presents the original effective analytical method for diagnosing the condition of continuous welded track based on experimental research. The method allows for an appropriate repair or maintenance recommendation. In the experimental research, the authors considered track diagnostic conditions for two conditions: track under load and track without load. This paper presents empirical formulas for calculating rail temperature and longitudinal force based on ambient temperature, developed from long-term measurements. The formulas were developed for a track located on a straight section—both for a rail loaded and unloaded with a passing train under the following conditions: 60E1 rail, not on an engineering structure, conventional surface, wooden sleepers and very high train traffic load. The obtained results in the value of the correlation coefficient R2 ≥ 0.995 attest to very high accuracy of the calculations performed with the method proposed by the authors.

The working characteristics of a finite width slider bearing lubricated by a non-Newtonian fluid are computed. The analysis proposed here allows its performances to be evaluated by means of a pocket calculator. For that purpose, a computer code based on a finite element method is used. The program runs for different values of pertinent kinematical, geometrical and rheological parameters. The corresponding results are fitted by means of adequate analytical formulas, which are very easy to handle. The accuracy of these empirical formulas is investigated in several typical cases. The agreement with the numerical solution is proven to be satisfactory.

A thermoelectric pipe (TEP) is constructed by tubular graphite electrodes, Teflon material, and stainless-steel tube containing polymeric nanofluids as electrolytes in this study. Heat dissipation and power generation (generating capacity) are both fulfilled with temperature difference via the thermal-electrochemistry and redox reaction effects of polymeric nanofluids. The notion of TEP is to recover the dissipative heat from the heat capacity generated by the relevant machine systems. The thermal conductivity and power density empirical formulas of the novel TEP were derived through the intelligent dimensional analysis with thermoelectric experiments and evaluated at temperatures between 25 and 100 °C and vacuum pressures between 400 and 760 torr. The results revealed that the polymeric nanofluids composed of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles with 0.2 wt.% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) of the novel TEP have the best thermoelectric performance among these electrolytes, including TiO2 nanofluid, TiO2 nanofluid with 0.2 wt.% NaOH, deionized water, and seawater. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity and power density of the novel TEP are 203.1 W/(m·K) and 21.16 W/m3, respectively.
