Community-based occupational health promotion programme: an initiative project for Indonesian agricultural farmers

PurposeOccupational health promotion programmes targeting the Indonesian agricultural farmers (AFs) are limited. This action research aimed to involve the AFs in the research and development of community-based occupational health promotion (COHP) programme, which is tailored to meet their perceived needs for preventing health problems related to occupational workplace.Design/methodology/approachThis study employed the qualitative action research approach. The participants (n = 136) were farmers from seven regions in the rural areas of East Java, Indonesia. The COHP was examined from public health centres (PHCs) in seven regions through eight steps, including recognition, analyses, planning, communication, preparation, implementation, evaluation and continuity of programme, for eight weeks. Data were collected through focus group interviews and examined using qualitative content analysis.FindingsThe findings revealed that the participants not only lacked health status but were also required to promote a comprehensive programme for occupational health and safety. The health problems of AFs were identified as the lack of nutrition and high blood pressure, which are related to un-ergonomic condition during work, limited use of personal protective equipment, high stress and workload. The lack of support for AF groups to prevent health problems and to access health services was a key theme for all the participants. Therefore, self-help group as social support was designed to solve the health problems among AFs.Originality/valueThe COHP, through action research, provided a change strategy for AFs to manage and promote occupational health and safety within their practice. The study findings could be used in the development of a framework for PHCs in delivering occupational health and safety practices in the agricultural sectors.

<p><em>Waste pickers are a group of workers who are at risk of accidents and work-related diseases because they are exposed to sources of disease from rubbish piles. Various diseases and work accidents occur in waste pickers in various countries. To describe occupational health and safety problems that occur in waste pickers as well as efforts that can be made to improve occupational health and safety of waste pickers. Literature search through online databases on ScienceDirect, Wiley Online, and ProQuest with the keywords used "occupational health service", "occupational health nursing", "waste picker", and "scavenger" obtained a total of 3,624 articles, carried out reviews resulting in 17 selected articles. Health problems and workplace accidents of waste pickers range from respiratory problems, musculoskeletal problems, communicable and non communicable diseases, mental health problems and other problems to impacting their families and causing death. Policies are needed to regulate the health and work safety of waste pickers as well as to improve knowledge of occupational health and safety, providing Persolan Protective Equipment (PPE) and improving waste picker obedience to use PPE by health care program. </em></p><p> </p><p><em>Pengumpul sampah merupakan kelompok pekerja yang berisiko terhadap kecelakaan dan penyakit akibat kerja karena terpapar sumber penyakit dari tumpukan sampah. Masalah kesehatan dan kecelakaan kerja pengumpul sampah beragam mulai dari masalah pernapasan, masalah muskuloskeletal, penyakit menular dan tidak menular, masalah mental dan masalah lainnya hingga berdampak pada keluarga mereka dan menyebabkan kemantian. Diperlukan kebijakan yang mengatur kesehatan dan keselamatan kerja pengumpul sampah serta peningkatan pengetahuan kesehatan dan keselamatan kerja, pengadaan alat pelindung diri dan meningkatkan kepatuhan penggunaan alat pelindung diri oleh pengumpul sampah melalui peran pelayanan kesehatan.</em></p>

Summary Purpose: To synthesize the lessons from both occupational health and health promotion, to improve workplace health. Approach: This article briefly outlines the evolution in defining and understanding health promotion as well as current thinking in occupational health and safety.It also discusses an approach taken in the healthcare sector in British Columbia, Canada, where evidence-based practices and collaboration became the cornerstones to bringing about change and achieve impressive cost-beneficial results in healthcare workforce health. Conclusion: Traditionally, workplace health promotion and occupational health and safety have been two solitudes. Workplace health promotion is rooted in ‘wellness’ and healthy lifestyle choices, while occupational health is heavily dictated by workplace health and safety requirements and legislation. Recently however, there has been increasing recognition of the need for a more holistic approach that focusses on workplace culture, addressing both primary and secondary prevention [1], as well as interventions aimed both at the individual as well as the organisation [2].

Purpose This study aims to quantify the multifaceted relationship between lean implementation and occupational health and safety (OHS) performance. Hypotheses based on a set of antecedents (mediating factors) are built and quantitatively tested. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected through an international survey with responses from more than 20 countries. Partial least square-based structural equation modeling was used to test a theoretical framework derived from literature. Leading indicators (formative indices) were used to evaluate the four antecedents of OHS performance (mediating factors). Findings All the identified antecedents show a significant mediating role. Antecedents related to the working environment and organizational factors have the strongest mediating effect. Results support the importance of using OHS leading indicators to appropriately measure the impact of lean implementation on workers’ health and safety. Research limitations/implications The proposed OHS leading indicators connecting lean practices to OHS performance antecedents are only explored in this study. Therefore, to establish a comprehensive, validated and practically usable set of leading indicators, further research is needed. Practical implications As there are some synergistic and trade-off relationships between lean and safety, the findings of this study will enable managers and organizations to leverage the positive effects of lean implementation on workers’ health and safety and mitigate the negative effects. Originality/value Several prior studies investigated the multifaceted link between lean and OHS; however, this is the first study that tested direct and mediated influence by defining a coherent set of antecedents. The results justify and strongly support the adoption of OHS leading indicators to measure the impact of lean implementation on OHS performance.

The scientific literature and research in progress since 1992 on poultry welfare were reviewed under the major headings of housing, management, health, and occupational health and safety. Throughout the review there are a number of recommendations for research and implications for the Australian egg industry arising from the current worldwide research. The main recommendations can be summarised as follows. Further economic analyses of perches in cages under Australian conditions are required if the welfare advantages of incorporating perches into cages are to be maximised by the Australian industry. To reduce bone breakage, depopulation should involve removing birds by both legs, and current research on dietary manipulation could lead to a reduction in the incidence of osteoporosis. Injuries and entrapment can be reduced by the application of an abrasive strip to limit claw length, and a simple way of reducing mortalities may be by using coloured plastic enrichment devices. If enriched modified cages are to be adopted, a survey of public attitudes on their acceptability and trialing them under Australian conditions are required. It is important that welfare recommendations from overseas research and development are validated under Australian conditions to prevent compromising bird welfare. Replicated experiments on the welfare implications of non-cage systems are urgently required. Beak trimming remains controversial, and determining the extent of single and double beak trimming and the reasons for their practice may lead to a reduced frequency of use. If beak trimming were to be disallowed in the future, the overseas knowledge on low light levels to reduce cannibalism and intermittent light schedules to maintain production would have to be reviewed, perhaps developed, and adopted. Also, a current common housing option of open-fronted sheds and exposure of hens to ambient light would have to be reassessed. While moulting via dietary restriction is not currently considered a significant welfare issue in Australia, a more sophisticated research approach to manipulate ovarian function that does not rely on food restriction should be researched. Cooling birds by providing cool water or cool radiators may be beneficial to welfare in hot weather. The slaughter process involves a number of potential welfare issues, such as heat-related problems during transport, stunning currents, and gas stunning, that require either a survey to identify problems or assessment. The human–animal relationship probably has an important role in poultry welfare. However, the current understanding of the human factors that regulate human–animal interactions in poultry is poor. Some basic research and considerable applied research are required in this area before it would be possible to benefit bird welfare. Flock health monitoring must be considered as an ongoing priority because of its impact on bird welfare. In the area of health and welfare, the interactions between diet and skeletal condition, disease resistance and transmission, and housing and handling and immunosuppression require further research. Any relevant improvements in technology that arise from overseas research in non-cage environments to improve working conditions should be assessed and, if appropriate, adopted by the Australian industry because of its potential impact on occupational health and safety, work ethic, and the implications this has for bird welfare.

European directives related the occupational health and safety set out minimum requirements and fundamental principles, for managing the specific problems related to occupational risks, principle of prevention and risk assessment, as well as the responsibilities of employers and employees. A series of European guidelines aims to facilitate the implementation of European directives, including standards of related fields. The European Union Strategic Framework on Health and Safety at Work 2014 – 2020 has pushed the Member States to review their national strategies in close consultation with relevant stakeholders including the social partners. Thus, national strategies must transfer and customize the European vision to the national culture and specifics, considering the European framework that acts as a common guide and reference. Romania has adopted several versions of the National Strategy for Health and Safety at Work and the last one is related to the 2018 - 2020 period. Based on this document and the implementation plan associated the article will present a quantitative approach of the SWOT analysis. This research approach is meant to identify and characterize the new strategic direction that should be followed, together with a set of important aspect for the implementation plan up-date. The conclusions of this study will provide a scientific base for policy makers in the field of occupational health and safety.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a new non-technological innovation concerning management processes in organization, focussing on occupational health promotion as a part of social responsibility (SR). Employer’s occupational health promotion includes systemic and systematic activities for good employees’ social, physical and mental health; synergy is suggested. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative analysis using SR, dialectical systems theory and human resource management is applied. Findings – A healthy company can be built by occupational health promotion, which must take place socially responsibly and requisitely holistically. Research limitations/implications – Qualitative analysis is applied in desk and field research on Slovenia. Practical implications – The novel socially responsible, requisitely holistic approach to managing employee’s health, exposing personal and corporate SR prevents oversights and resulting failures. Originality/value – Available literature offers no similar concept.

Background: All over the world nearly 860,000 people are injured every day and 2.3 million deaths occur annually due to occupational accidents and work-related diseases.There are limited studies that specifically determine the knowledge of waste handlers on occupational health problems and associated factors of occupational health problems and injuries in waste handlersin context of Nepal. Therefore, this studyaimed to assess the knowledge of waste handlers on occupational health and safety practices and its association with utilization of PPEs along with the condition of occupational health problems and injuries and factors associated with them among the waste handlers of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among selected 355 solid waste collectors by using semi-structured questionnaire and observation checklist, which was completed from March 2016 to May 2016. The data was entered into SPSS 20 version for analysis and a chi-square test was performed to see the presence of the association between the dependent and selected independent variables.Results: Among total respondents (355) surveyed 51.5% had got knowledge on occupational health hazard, 16.1 %  had got the knowledge to prevent from work-related health risks, 29% had got knowledge about PPEs and  31.5% had got knowledge about PPEs utilization. About 45.8% of the study participants had practices of the utilization of PPEs. Majority of the respondents i.e. 63.7% reported that they were suffering from occupational health problems. The evidence of the occupational health injuries was found to be low i.e. 25.4%. Similarly, variables which had significant influence on the occupational health problems were knowledge on occupational health hazard (p=0.016), work experience (p=0.021), health checkup (p=0.042) and for the occupational health injuries were monthly income(p=0.036), knowledge to prevent from health risk (p=0.001), gender (p=0.02), and knowledge of occupational health hazard (p=0.011), work experience (p= 0.025), work type (p=0.001), knowledge on PPEs ( p=0.034) and knowledge on work-related health risks (p= 0.027).Conclusion: Based on this study, its recommended to improve occupational health and safety practices. PurposeTo review the literature and identify research gaps in the role and influence boards of directors of companies have in occupational health and safety (OHS).Design/methodology/approachThis was done in a scoping review built on a structured search in MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, PsycINFO, Sociological Abstracts, CCInfoWeb, EconLit, Web of Science, CINAHL and gray literature. Citations and reference lists were tracked. Inclusion criteria were publication in English. Exclusion criteria were studies covering companies using subcontractors to arrange OHS, or with <250 employees.FindingsForty-nine studies were included. The majority contained empirical data (n = 28; 57%), some were entirely normative (n = 16; 33%), and a few contained normative claims far beyond empirical data (n = 5; 10%). Empirical studies gave no insight into the scope of impact of board activities on OHS, and no studies assess the causal mechanisms by which board activities influence OHS outcomes. Most studies focused on both health and safety (n = 20; 41%) or only safety (n = 15; 31%). Context might explain the focus on safety rather than health, but is not clearly elucidated by the studies. Several studies are describing leadership behavior, although not framed as such. A narrative summary is presented to facilitate future research.Research limitations/implicationsFuture research should include: (1) which board activities influence OHS, (2) how board activities influence OHS, (3) the influence of context and (4) the leadership role of boards of directors.Originality/valueThis study identifies a total lack of research on the basic mechanics of the relationship between boards and OHS.
