Purpose The purpose of this paper is to experimentally investigate the effect of biodiesel fuel blending and heating on engine torque and power. Design/methodology/approach To obtain torque and power data, a 1200 AWD dynamometer was used. The 1200 AWD dynamometer is a device used to obtain readings, and is made up of a chassis, inertia roller, roller sensor and converter modules, and can also be connected to a personal computer. Findings The result revealed that biodiesel blending and heating significantly affected torque and power. When only biodiesel blend ratio was varied, the highest torque and power were obtained at 30 per cent fuel blending. Also, the highest torque and power were obtained at 20 mm when only a spaced finned tube heater was used. When both variables were combined, the highest torque was obtained at a 20 per cent biodiesel blend and a 10 mm radial radiator finned spacing. Maximum power for two variables was obtained at the 20 per cent blend ratio and 20 mm finned tube heater spacing. Originality/value A novel radial finned tube heater is used.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to provide a micromixer for achieving effective mixing of two liquids. The mixing of two liquids is difficult to achieve in microfluidic chips because they cannot form turbulence at small dimensions and velocities.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, four kinds of passive micromixers based on splitting–recombination and chaotic convection are compared. First, a better E-shape mixing unit based on the previous F-shape mixing unit has been designed. Then, the E-shape mixing units are further combined to form three micromixers (i.e. E-mixer, SESM and FESM).FindingsFinally, the mixing experimental results show that the mixing indexes of E-mixer, SESM and FESM are more than those of F-mixer when the Reynolds number range is from 0.5 to 100. And at Re = 15, the lowest mixing index of E-mixer is 71%, which is the highest of the four micromixers.Originality/valueAt Re = 80, the highest mixing index of F-mixer and E-mixer is 92 and 94 per cent, respectively, and then it begins to decrease. But the mixing index of SESM and FESM remains close to 100 per cent.

Purpose Performance evaluation of airports or any other organisation is paramount for improving performance. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate and compare the performance of the three international airports in Libya (MJI, MRA, and LAQ airports) by considering five aspects of performance. Design/methodology/approach The considered aspects are airport service quality, airport operations, airport economy, safety and security, and environmental. The paper uses the grey system theory to assess these airports by summarizing the opinions of experts. Findings The finding of this study provides directions of the evaluated airports to take the correct actions to improve overall performance. Originality/value No literature has been found till date is to evaluate and compare the performance of the international airports in Libya.

Purpose This study aims to investigates the appropriate number and kinds of accounting measures managers should use in their decision-making. Design/methodology/approach The authors apply an experimental method with 54 participants who work for a utility company in Japan. Findings This study suggests that under information overload, in which many measures are handled simultaneously, managers who have a high Need for Cognition (NFC) can no longer use either financial or customer perspective measures effectively, while when there is no information overload, they can use those measures. Managers with low NFC do not use customer perspective measures even when information overload does not occur. Practical implications This study concludes that we need to pay careful attention to differences in managers’ NFC as well as how many and what kind of measures should be provided to managers when designing multi-measures for performance evaluation. Originality/value This paper sheds light on the relationships among the number of measures, the characteristics of measures, and managers’ cognitive style when designing a management accounting system.

PurposeThe study aims to understand how practicing organizational performance evaluation (OPE) is related to the performance paradox (tensions between creative freedom and survival challenges) in “evaluation-hesitant” cultural and creative industries (CCI) organizations.Design/methodology/approachMixed methods research, consisting of moderation analyses and unstructured expert interviews.FindingsA conceptual model is developed to explain how creative freedom and survival challenges affect OPE in “evaluation-hesitant” CCI organizations.Originality/valueThe authors bring a new understanding to the factors that contribute to evaluation-hesitance in CCI. The paper contributes to discussing both the theory of paradox and flow theory in explaining the relations between OPE, creative freedom and survival challenges.

Biodiesel is a renewable alternative fuel which produces lower exhaust emissions compared to its petroleum-based counterpart, diesel. While all of the emissions are less for biodiesel compared to diesel fuel, nitrogen oxides (NOx) increases. To meet the emissions requirements by engine manufacturers, information about biodiesel fuel must be provided for engine control system to be able to compensate the increase in NOx emissions caused by using biodiesel. Moreover, biodiesel blend information can be useful to improve performance on the biodiesel fueled engine. Biodiesel blend estimation based on fuel consumption and produced engine torque is investigated in this paper. This strategy is fitted in a robust adaptive estimation structure for achieving a robust estimation. Sensitivity analysis has been done to check the robustness of the estimators against measurement errors.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to know what scientific literature presents about the theme evaluation of seaport performance, thus enabling the construction of knowledge in the researchers and the identification of gaps in the research that will lead to advances in the area from the identification of the characteristics of a portfolio of relevant international publications. Design/methodology/approach – From the basic philosophical (constructivism), of the kind strategy (research-action) and the method used for the accomplishment of such strategy (structured process knowledge development process – constructivist (ProKnow-C)) the current research has a qualitative approach. Findings – From the analysis of the bibliographic portfolio composed of 23 articles, the main results were: focus of the evaluation of seaport performance is on operational and tactical efficiency rather than on strategic and global performance; the majority of the studies does not relate to the reality experienced by seaport managers due to the limited interaction with these managers, evidencing a distance of the researchers from the object of their research; and performance evaluation was barely used/explored as a tool to support management, only for the sake of evaluation itself. Research limitations/implications – The search occurred in the databases Web of Science, Scopus, Proquest, Ebsco, Sciece Direct and Wiley. Originality/value – The identification of gaps that might promote advances in this field of knowledge, once the seaport segment is not exploring the potential that performance evaluation can offer and is already available in literature.

PurposeThis paper aims to identify the main performance criteria for Humanitarian Operations (HOs) from the beneficiary perspective and to propose a taxonomy to support the evaluation of stakeholders.Design/methodology/approachThe research conducts a Systematic Literature Review to identify the main criteria in HOs from the beneficiary's view. Also, we conduct an empirical study based on a survey and a case study to validate the findings in a real-life setting.FindingsConsidering 25 papers, the identified performance criteria were divided into six categories: health, housing, education, socioeconomic factors, care and risk and disaster management. The empirical discussion considered forty-four responses from beneficiaries, and the main criteria complained about were related to socioeconomic factors. In addition, a case study was developed that examines the perspective of the company responsible for the construction of the building to aid in understanding the areas of dissatisfaction noted by the residents.Practical implicationsThe research contributes organized criteria to support the performance evaluation of organizations. It offers a structured basis for further discussion among academics and professionals about other performance evaluation topics, such as dashboards and the integration of indicators from different stakeholders.Originality/valueLiterature is scarce in questions of performance evaluation in HOs and the analysis of the beneficiary as the main client. Therefore, the paper contributes to both areas by evaluating HOs from the beneficiary's perspective.

Abstract The fuels (diesel/biodiesel blends) for diesel engines must possess a minimum of lubricating characteristics to prolong the life of some of the engine vital parts lubricated by the fuel itself. Hence, the tribological characteristic of the modified nanofluid fuel blends needs to be investigated for its suitability and sustainability. In the present study, an experimental analysis on the tribological aspect of fuel blends comprising 40% Acacia concinna biodiesel and 60% diesel (by volume) mixed with titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles in a concentration of 50–200 mg/l was conducted. The prepared fuel blends in varying volume concentrations were tested on a four-ball tribotester. The effects of varying operating parameters such as load and temperature as well as oxidation of biodiesel fuel blend on friction and wear behavior were evaluated with the help of three-dimensional (3D) surface plots (response surface methodology approach). Further, wear patch diameter, wear debris, wear volume, and flash temperature parameter were analyzed using optical micrographs and ferrographs. The obtained results revealed that despite having an influence of all parameters, the effect of TiO2 nanoparticles is more significant in improving the antiwear/friction characteristics of modified nanofluid fuel blends. It was observed that a TiO2 concentration of 150 mg/l in fuel blend was found to be the most suitable to reduce the friction, wear, and wear volume compared with those of diesel and biodiesel blend.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a suitable framework of sustainable urbanization performance evaluation from the view of efficiency for mitigating the unbalance between the theoretical research of sustainable urbanization and the practical need of sustainable urbanization. Design/methodology/approach A slack-restricted slack-based measure data envelopment analysis (DEA) model and two sustainable urbanization benchmarking methods with individual and centralized view, respectively, are developed based upon the classical DEA theory. Findings The empirical results show that China is now suffering a relatively low level of sustainable urbanization. Too much waste water emission, too small an urban population proportion, and too much resource wastage are the major factors that drive China’s urbanization away from sustainability. Originality/value Having the overall aim of practical urbanization, the proposed framework can help stakeholders recognize different sustainable urbanization performance levels by offering them accurate sustainable urbanization performance scores. The framework can also direct governments to improve the sustainable urbanization performance. The empirical analysis of China’s provincial region sustainable urbanization performance with the proposed framework further demonstrates the theoretical and practical value of this research.

Purpose This paper aims to evaluate the financial performance of companies listed on Tehran Stock Exchange by using negative data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. Design/methodology/approach First, the financial metrics for performance evaluation were extracted and then filtered based on the experts’ opinions. Upon choosing the appropriate financial measures, the financial information of 72 companies selected from four automotive, pharmaceutical, petrochemical and cement industries were collected, and the criteria values were also measured. The financial performance of selected companies was assessed using negative data bounded adjusted measure in the DEA, and efficient and inefficient companies were identified. Finally, the efficient companies were ranked using Andersen and Petersen model. Findings The required analysis was conducted, and the financial performance of selected companies listed on Tehran Stock Exchange was evaluated. There were 58 efficient companies with a performance value of 1; 14 companies became inefficient because the efficiency size was less than 1; therefore, reference units were also introduced to the managers for efficiency of inefficient companies. Originality/value The aim of this study was to identify the required financial criteria and to determine an appropriate model for performance evaluation based on negative DEA. The findings can help shareholders to identify efficient companies and make the optimal portfolio accordingly; the managers of inefficient companies can also take the proper reforming actions to improve efficiency.
