With all advantages, electric vehicles have a significant disadvantage — a relatively small driving range on a single charge of the traction battery compared to cars using hydrocarbon fuel. The solution to the issue is to choose a rational structural scheme of an electromechanical power unit to obtain its high energy efficiency regardless of the operating conditions. A significant number of electric vehicles produced today either do not contain gearboxes or contain single-speed reducers. The use of a multi-speed gearbox solves the problem of adapting the working processes of a traction electric motor to the loading conditions, bringing its efficiency as close as possible to the range of highly efficient values. Calculated estimation of energy consumption of the MAZ-4381EE electric delivery truck is carried out in the paper for various versions of the mechanical part of power unit: without a reducer, with the use of a reducer and two types of two-speed gearboxes (shaft and shaft-planetary). The evaluation is made based on consideration of the European test driving cycle NEDC, taking into account the use of efficiency maps of the traction induction electric motor. The calculation results showed that the use of two-speed gearboxes can reduce the total energy consumption by more than 1.8 times compared to a power unit with a high-torque motor and without a gearbox.

This paper proposes an energy-saving system based on a prefill system and a buffer system to improve the energy efficiency and the processing performance of hydraulic presses. Saving energy by integrating such systems into the cooling system of a hydraulic press has not been previously reported. A prefill system, powered by the power unit of the cooling system, is used to supply power simultaneously with the traditional power unit during the pressurization stage, thus reducing the usage of pumps and installed power of the hydraulic press. In contrast to the traditional prefill system, the proposed energy-saving system is controlled by a servo valve to adjust flow according to the load profile. In addition, a buffer system is employed to the cooling system to absorb the hydraulic shock generated at the unloading stage, store those shares of hydraulic energy as a recovery accumulator, and then release this energy to power the prefill system and the hydraulic actuator in the subsequent productive process. Finally, through a series of comparative experiments, it was preliminarily validated that the proposed system could reduce the installed power and pressure shock by up to 22.85% and 41%, respectively, increase energy efficiency by up to 26.71%, and provide the same processing characteristics and properties as the traditional hydraulic press.

Mobile machining solutions use autonomous machining units that can be transported to different part locations, making possible easy maintenance and repair of large industrial equipment. Every new part and location results in different boundary conditions for the mobile machine tool-part system; influencing the dynamics of the combined system and necessitating different strategies for part/machine referencing and clamping. To facilitate efficient mutability and modularity in mobile machining solutions, this paper presents a dynamic substructuring strategy that combines the response characteristics of the mobile machine unit with that of two different simulated base models under varying levels of contact stiffness and damping to obtain the synthesized mobile machine tool dynamic response. Numerical verification of the approach is provided. Framework presented can also combine measured response of parts for which models may not be available a priori. Methods presented provide experimental guidelines for establishing strategies for part/machine referencing, and planning of machining strategies based on the evaluated dynamics.

An innovative hybrid energy system consisting of a waste-to-energy unit and a coal-fired power unit is designed to enhance the energy recovery of waste and decrease the investment costs of waste-to-energy unit. In this integrated design, partial cold reheat steam of the coal-fired unit is heated by the waste-to-energy boiler’s superheater. The heat required for partial preheated air of waste-to-energy unit and its feedwater are supplied by the feedwater of CFPU. In addition, an additional evaporator is deployed in the waste-to-energy boiler, of which the outlet stream is utilized to provide the heat source for the urea hydrolysis unit of coal-fired power plant. The stand-alone and proposed designs are analyzed and compared through thermodynamic and economic methods. Results indicate that the net total energy efficiency increases from 41.84% to 42.12%, and the net total exergy efficiency rises from 41.19% to 41.46% after system integration. Moreover, the energy efficiency and exergy efficiency of waste-to-energy system are enhanced by 10.48% and 9.92%, respectively. The dynamic payback period of new waste-to-energy system is cut down from 11.39 years to 5.48 years, and an additional net present value of $14.42 million is got than before.

The dynamic characteristics of a load-sensing hydraulic servo system are complex and highly nonlinear and, furthermore, the stability is critically deteriorated compared with that of the conventional hydraulic servo systems. Another property of the systems is that the setting value of the pump pressure-compensator considerably affects energy efficiency as well as control performance of the system. These features significantly add complexity to the controller design of the load-sensing systems. To guarantee satisfactory control performance and energy efficiency of the system an effective controller design method, therefore, needs to be developed. This paper considers a suboptimal PID control for the velocity control problem of a loadsensing hydraulic servo system. To show the effectiveness of the controller a series of simulations and experiments were performed. Both results show that the proposed suboptimal controller can produce satisfactory response characteristics and yield an effective trade-off between control performance and energy efficiency of the system.

Abstract We examined the use of smoothing to enhance the detection of response coupling from the activity of different response systems. Three different types of moving average smoothers were applied to both simulated interbeat interval (IBI) and electrodermal activity (EDA) time series and to empirical IBI, EDA, and facial electromyography time series. The results indicated that progressive smoothing increased the efficiency of the detection of response coupling but did not increase the probability of Type I error. The power of the smoothing methods depended on the response characteristics. The benefits and use of the smoothing methods to extract information from psychophysiological time series are discussed.

Abstract:A computer model of cardiovascular control has been developed based on the response characteristics of cardiovascular control components derived from experiments in animals and humans. Results from the model were compared to those obtained experimentally in humans, and the similarities and differences were used to identify both the strengths and inadequacies of the concepts used to form the model. Findings were confirmatory of some concepts but contrary to some which are firmly held in the literature, indicating that understanding the complexity of cardiovascular control probably requires a combination of experiments and computer models which integrate multiple systems and allow for determination of sufficiency and necessity.

At steel production based on scrap metal utilization, the scrap heating before charging into a melting facility is an important way of energy efficiency increase and ecological parameters improving. In winter time scrap metal charging with ice inclusions into a metal melt can result in a considerable damage of equipment and even accidents. Therefore, scrap preliminary drying is necessary to provide industrial safety. It was shown, that in countries with warm and low-snow climate with no risk of scrap metal icing up during its transportation and storing in the open air, the basic task being solved at the scrap drying is an increase of energy efficiency of steelmaking. InRussiathe scrap metal drying first of all provides the safety of the process and next - energy saving. Existing technologies of scrap metal drying and heating considered, as well as advantages and drawbacks of technical solutions used at Russian steel plants. In winter time during scrap metal heating at conveyers (Consteel process) hot gases penetrate not effectively into its mass, the heat is not enough for evaporation of wetness in the metal charge. At scrap heating by the furnace gases, a problem of dioxines emissions elimination arises. Application of shaft heaters results in high efficiency of scrap heating. However, under conditions of Russian winter the upper scrap layers are not always heated higher 0 °С and after getting into a furnace bath the upper scrap layers cause periodical vapor explosions. The shaft heaters create optimal conditions for dioxines formation, which emit into atmosphere. It was shown, that accounting Russian economic and nature conditions, the metal charge drying and heating in modified charging buckets by the heat of burnt natural gas or other additional fuel is optimal. The proposed technical solution enables to burnt off organic impurities ecologically safely, to melt down ice, to evaporate the wetness in the scrap as well as to heat the charge as enough as the charging logistics enables it. The method was implemented at several Russian steel plants. Technical and economical indices of scrap metal drying in buckets under conditions of EAF-based shop, containing two furnaces ДСП-100, presented.
