Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC) or IEEE 802.11p/OCB (Out of the Context of a Base-station) is widely considered to be a primary technology for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication, and it is aimed toward increasing the safety of users on the road by sharing information between one another. The requirements of DSRC are to maintain real-time communication with low latency and high reliability. In this paper, we investigate how communication can be used to improve stopping distance performance based on fieldwork results. In addition, we assess the impacts of reduced reliability, in terms of distance independent, distance dependent and density-based consecutive packet losses. A model is developed based on empirical measurements results depending on distance, data rate, and traveling speed. With this model, it is shown that cooperative V2V communications can effectively reduce reaction time and increase safety stop distance, and highlight the importance of high reliability. The obtained results can be further used for the design of cooperative V2V-based driving and safety applications.

With the evolution of advanced wireless communication technologies, tremendous efforts have been invested in vehicular networking, particularly the construction of a vehicle-to-vehicle communication system that supports high speed and mobility. In vehicle-to-vehicle communication environment, vehicles constantly exchange information using wireless technology. This paper aims to propose a vehicle-to-vehicle communication system and validate the feasibility of the system on a suburban road in China. Two vehicles were used equipped with IEEE 802.11p based DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communications) device to construct a vehicle-to-vehicle communication platform. The system architecture consisting of hardware and software was described in details. Then, communication characteristics such as RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator), latency and PLR (packet loss rate) were analyzed. Additionally, GPS-related information (such as ground speed and location) was obtained through field test on a suburban road in Shanghai and Taicang City. The test results demonstrate satisfactory performance of the proposed system.

Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) communication systems, known as V2X technologies, have increasingly attracted attention in current research on road safety and traffic ergonomics. The performance evaluation of these communication systems is an important step before their potential integration and use in real systems. V2X communications are based on the IEEE 802.11p standard also known as Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment (WAVE). V2X can affect human life; therefore a deep study related to V2X performance evaluation should be done in order to be sure about the system reliability. In this context, we have elaborated a deep study related to the effect of transmission range on V2X communications by considering the terminal mobility. First, we have evaluated the performance of the PHY layer on the IEEE 802.11p using simulation. Secondly, we have conducted real case measurements using the Arada LocoMate Transmission system. The obtained results shows the necessity to optimize the quality of transmission in V2X communications. Consequently, we propose in this paper a new comb-pilot technique to enhance the quality of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) transmission. Our proposal consists in two new uses of the pilot subcarrier estimation technique in order to decrease the elevated bit error rate (BER). The quality of transmission (QoT) is first evaluated relating to the pilot symbol rearranged positions. Second, we proposed to optimize the QoT by adding two supplementary pilot symbols as it can offer better channel estimation results. Based on the performance evaluation of our proposal, it is confirmed that both of rearrangement and the adding of the pilot patterns lead to performance enhancement compared to baseline model (standardized one).

Abstract In this article proposed IEEE 802.11p Physical layer (PHY). A MATLAB simulation is performed to analyze the baseband processing of the transceiver. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is applied in this project according to the IEEE 802.11p standard, which allows data transmission rates from 3 to 27 Mbps. Separate modulation schemes, bit phase shift modulation (BPSK), quadrate phase shift modulation (QPSK), and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), are used for different data rates. These schemes are combined with time interleaving and a convolutional error correction code. A guard interval is inserted at the start of the transmitted symbol to reduce the effect of intersymbol interference (ISI). This article studies the PHY physical layer of the IEEE 802.11p vehicular communication standard. An IEEE.802.11p PHY model, with many associated phenomena, is implemented in the V2V vehicle-to- vehicle, and the vehicle-to-vehicle ad hoc network (VANET) provides convenient coordination between moving vehicles. A moving vehicle could move at a very high speed, producing a Doppler effect that damages OFDM symbols and also causes inter-carrier interference (ICI). This article has discussed VANET technology versus 802.11a technology, as they have many differences when it comes to user mobility. The Doppler effect resulting from the mobility of the user with a high speed of 25 to 400 km / h has been studied as the main parameter, the estimation of the channel based on the lms algorithm has been proposed in order to improve the performance of the physical physical chain

The IEEE 802.11p standard operates with the WAVE (Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments) system in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). The broadcast process is used to send messages for safety and non-safety applications. A previous work on broadcast packets over the control channel proposes an analytical model to study the loss process. Even if such work does not consider all of the phenomena affecting the operation of vehicular networks, we can obtain a very good approximation of the performance that VANETs may exhibit. Regardless of its importance, this subject has been barely studied. Moreover, there is in the literature only a couple of contributions on this subject, being both analytical models. Therefore, we present in this paper an analysis of the loss process of broadcast packets on the control channel of VANETs over different scenarios. First, we consider a typical two-way scenario and then we analyze a scenario with intersections, both for different vehicle densities. We conduct a campaign of extensive simulations with the NS-3 simulator to study the average loss rate of broadcast packets, and then we compare our results with an analytical model proposed by Campolo et al. We prove the relationship among the contention window, the packet size, and the number of vehicles with the loss rate, including losses caused by noise, collisions, hidden terminal, and channel switching. Thus, we analyze the loss process validating the results obtained by Campolo et al. We find that there are additional factors affecting the loss rate, which cannot be captured with the analytical model. One key finding in this work is that the loss rate due to channel switching differs between both approaches. Also, we find bounds on the use of the control channel, with the loss rate and the traffic load in the network as parameters.

Research to develop new technologies for increasing the safety of passengers and crew in rail equipment is being directed by the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA’s) Office of Research, Development, and Technology. Crash energy management (CEM) components which can be integrated into the end structure of a locomotive have been developed: a push-back coupler and a deformable anti-climber. These components are designed to inhibit override in the event of a collision. The results of vehicle-to-vehicle override, where the strong underframe of one vehicle, typically a locomotive, impacts the weaker superstructure of the other vehicle, can be devastating. These components are designed to improve crashworthiness for equipped locomotives in a wide range of potential collisions, including collisions with conventional locomotives, conventional cab cars, and freight equipment. Concerns have been raised in discussions with industry that push-back couplers may trigger prematurely, and may require replacement due to unintentional activation as a result of service loads. Push-back couplers are designed with trigger loads meant to exceed the expected maximum service loads experienced by conventional couplers. Analytical models are typically used to determine these required trigger loads. Two sets of coupling tests are planned to demonstrate this, one with a conventional locomotive equipped with conventional draft gear and coupler, and another with a conventional locomotive retrofit with a push-back coupler. These tests will allow a performance comparison of a conventional locomotive with a CEM-equipped locomotive during coupling. In addition to the two sets of coupling tests, car-to-car compatibility tests of CEM-equipped locomotives, as well as a train-to-train test are also planned. This arrangement of tests allows for evaluation of the CEM-equipped locomotive performance, as well as comparison of measured with simulated locomotive performance in the car-to-car and train-to-train tests. The coupling tests of a conventional locomotive have been conducted, the results of which compared favorably with pre-test predictions. In the coupling tests of a CEM-equipped locomotive, the coupling speed for which the push-back coupler (PBC) triggers will be measured. A moving, CEM-equipped locomotive will be coupled to a standing cab car. The coupling speed for the first test will be low, approximately 2 mph. The test will then be repeated with the speed increasing incrementally until the PBC triggers. This paper describes the fabrication, retrofit, test requirements, and analysis predictions for the CEM coupling tests. The equipment to be tested, track conditions, test procedures, and measurements to be made are described. A model for predicting the longitudinal forces acting on the equipment and couplers has been developed, along with preliminary predictions for the CEM coupling tests.

Majority of research contributions in wireless access in vehicular environment (WAVE)/IEEE 802.11p standard focus on life critical safety-related applications. These applications require regular status update of vehicle’s position referred to as beaconing. Periodic beaconing in vehicle to vehicle communication leads to severe network congestion in the communication channel. The condition worsens under high vehicular density where it impacts reliability and upper bound latency of safety messages. In this paper, WAVE compliant enhancement to the existing IEEE 802.11p protocol is presented which targets prioritized delivery of safety messages while simultaneously provisioning the dissemination of nonsafety messages. Proposed scheme relies on dynamic generation of beacons to mitigate channel congestion and inefficient bandwidth utilization by reducing transmission frequency of beacons. Through the use of clustering mechanism, different beaconing frequencies and different data transmission rates are assigned to prioritize vehicular mobility. Through extensive simulation results, the performance of the proposed approach is evaluated in terms of a wide range of quality of service (QoS) parameters for two different transmission ranges. Results show that the proposed protocol provides significant enhancement and stability of the clustered topology in vehicular ad hoc network over existing standard and other protocols with similar applications.
