The city of Hawassa is growing fast, driven by construction of a flagship industrial park that is expected to attract up to 60,000 workers by 2021, mostly young women, arriving without families or dependents, and living off very low wages. Along with these young women, female-headed households; divorced, separated and widowed women; elderly women; and women with disabilities all face severe/acute shelter vulnerabilities. These groups are most likely to struggle to access both formal and informal shelter, related to their below-average income levels but also to other forms of bias and discrimination. This paper draws out key findings on gender and housing from a collaborative study investigating shelter provision in Hawassa, part of a wider research study on inclusive cities in East Africa led by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). It aims to highlight specific constraints faced by women in accessing shelter, and around such issues as informality, safety and security, and infrastructure provision.

One hundred and thirty-two young adults (Mean = 19 years) and 142 elderly adults (Mean = 74 years) evaluated thirty-five different aspects of their own bodies. As hypothesized, elderly adults expressed less positive attitudes than young adults toward body items associated with body functioning (physical coordination, agility, sex drive, health). These differences are consistent with research indicating a progressive decline in bodily function efficiency with advancing age (Christofalo, 1988; Lakatta, 1990). Also as expected, the elderly held less positive attitudes toward body aspects associated with facial attractiveness (lips, appearance of eyes, cheek/cheekbones). These differences are in line with the structural changes that occur in the face as people age, moving them further from cultural beauty standards. One area where these age differences were reversed was in women's attitudes toward weight-related body items: elderly women expressed greater satisfaction than young women toward their appetite, thighs, and weight. The cause of this age difference in women may be due to thinness being a more defining standard of attractiveness for young women, or it could be due to the fact that people typically lose weight after the age of fifty, thus making weight gain less of a concern for older women. Results further indicated that, although men have more positive body attitudes than women, this gender difference is not nearly as pronounced among the elderly.

OBJECTIVE: To assess knee flexor-extensor muscular strength in elderly women with no previous history of musculoskeletal disorders on the lower limbs using an isokinetic dynamometer, in order to obtain data that could be used as a comparative parameter in the evaluation of elderly women with knee disorders, thus facilitating a better rehabilitation of these patients. METHODS: Twenty-six volunteers aged 75 to 83 years were studied using a Cybex® 6000 isokinetic dynamometer. The chosen angular velocity was 60 º/s, and concentric exercise was used for either flexion or extension. The studied parameters were: peak torque, angle of peak torque, and flexor-extensor torque rate. RESULTS: There were no differences between dominant (D) and nondominant (ND) knee peak torque values. This was true for both flexor (D = 42.46 ± 9.09 Nm / ND = 40.65 ± 9.38 Nm) and extensor (D = 76.92 ± 13.97 Nm / ND = 77.65 ± 15.21 Nm) movements. The descriptive statistical analysis of the values obtained for the flexor-extensor peak torque rate and for the angle of occurrence of peak torque was the same for the dominant and nondominant sides. CONCLUSIONS: The values of peak torque for the contralateral side can be used as a reference during rehabilitation of elderly women with acute disease of the knee, and the angular velocity of 60 º/s is proper and safe for isokinetic assessment of elderly people.

AbstractIntroduction The isokinetic dynamometer enables accurate assessment of muscle function. In Brazil, few studies have assessed the isokinetic muscle performance in older adults making interpretation and comparison of results with other studies.Objectives To conduct a descriptive analysis of the performance of the muscle flexor and extensor muscles of the knee joint in elderly community and compare the performance between the age groups 65-74 years and 75 years or more.Methods This is a cross sectional observational study with a convenience sample of 229 elderly community. For the analysis of muscle performance was used isokinetic dynamometer (Biodex System 3 Pro™) in the angular velocities of 60 °/s and 180 °/s. The variables evaluated were peak torque, peak torque normalized by body weight, total work normalized by body mass, total work, average power and agonist/antagonist ratio. Descriptive analysis was used to characterize the sample. For comparison between age groups was used Student's t-test with α = 0.05.Results The elderly women with older age showed a statistically significant decrease in most of the variables (p < 0.05) except for the agonist and antagonist knee (p = 0.398).Conclusions The isokinetic was a sensitive tool to characterize the modifications caused by aging on muscle function. Elderly with results below the lower limits of the confidence intervals for all variables certainly has a decreased strength for the age group evaluated and must be addressed therapeutically. The results can be used as a benchmark in clinical practice and future research.

Abstract Introduction: Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) affects mainly elderly, being characterized by arthralgia, stiffness and strength and balance deficits. Scientific evidence suggests beneficial effects of exercise therapy on these changes, but lacks detailed protocols. In addition, there were published studies on effects of therapeutic exercise associated with pompage that were not located. Objective: To investigate the effects of a therapeutic exercise program associated with pompage on pain, balance and muscle strength in elderly women with knee osteoarthritis. Methods: A randomized pilot clinical trial that included 22 women (60 - 80 years) diagnosed with knee OA, randomized and allocated by simple raffle into two groups: intervention and control. Intervention group (strengthening and balance exercises and knee pompage) performed two sessions per week for 12 weeks. The control group received educational lectures, they were evaluated before and after 12 weeks: arthralgia- subscale pain of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index questionnaire (WOMAC); postural stability- postural balance protocol by Biodex Balance SD and muscle strength- concentric peak torque of the knee extensor by isokinetic dynamometer. The Independent Student t test was used for intergroup analysis. Results: The intervention group compared with the control showed better results for the outcomes pain, balance and muscle strength after 12 weeks. However, the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05) for levels of antero-posterior oscillation (DM -0.28, 95% CI -0.54 a -0.02; p = 0.035) and global oscillation (DM -0.36, 95% CI -0.68 a -0.04; p = 0.028). Conclusion: The intervention had a positive effect on postural balance in elderly women with knee osteoarthritis.

Abstract The dorsolateral supraoptic nucleus (dl-SON) is the main production site of plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP). Plasma AVP levels and the activity of AVP neurons in humans are higher in males than in premenopausal females. On the other hand, an increased activity of AVP neurons becomes prominent in postmenopausal women who have strongly decreased estrogen levels. As estrogens are presumed to inhibit AVP production in a receptor-mediated way, we studied estrogen receptor (ER) α and β immunoreactivity in the dl-SON. Hypothalami of 34 controls were subdivided into 4 groups within a 50-yr boundary (young men, young women, elderly men, and elderly women). The AVP part of the dl-SON of young women contained 50 times more neurons with ERβ nuclear staining than that in young men and 250 times more than that in elderly women. In addition, young women also showed more ERβ cytoplasmic staining than young men and elderly women. In contrast to the ERβ immunoreactivity, no differences were found in the number of ERα-positive neurons in the 4 groups, but the age and sex pattern of ERα staining was basically opposite that of ERβ. Significant correlations between the percentage of ERβ- and ERα-positive and -negative AVP neurons and age were found in women, but not in men. Our data demonstrate for the first time a strong decrease of ERβ and an increase of ERα immunoreactivity in AVP neurons of the dl-SON of postmenopausal women. Both receptor changes are proposed to participate in the activation of the AVP neurons in postmenopausal women.

Objective To analyze the occurrence of atypia in the cytology/histology examinations of young women under the age of 25 years and of elderly women aged over 64 years, in the Xingu Indigenous Park and to evaluate, in a subjective manner, if the age range for screening established by the Ministry of Health and the Instituto Nacional de Câncer is appropriate for this population. Methods The Xingu/UNIFESP Project, in partnership with the Center for Gynecological Disease Prevention, develops programs to prevent cervical cancer. The exploratory, retrospective and descriptive study of cytological and histopathological examinations of young (12-24 years) and elderly (aged 64 and over) women of the Xingu Indigenous Park, between 2005 and 2011. Results There was low occurrence of cytological atypia in the elderly female population, but there were occasional high-grade lesions in the indigenous youth. Conclusion Interrupting screening at the limit age of 64 years, as established by the Ministry of Health and the Instituto Nacional de Câncer is justified. However, screening of young women should begin at an earlier age.

O objetivo foi verificar a influência do excesso de peso na força muscular e na funcionalidade de tronco de mulheres jovens. Estudo analítico transversal, com 54 mulheres de 18 a 30 anos, com excesso de peso (n=25), e eutróficas (n=29). A força muscular de tronco foi avaliada pelo dinamômetro isocinético e a funcionalidade de tronco e membros inferiores através do Bunkie Test. A análise dos dados foi realizada por meio do programa SPSS (Sciences Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). Como resultado, o presente estudo identificou que as mulheres com excesso de peso conseguem gerar pico de torque absoluto na 1º série (p=0,023), na 2º série (p=0,009), e no impulso na 2º série (p=0,009) maiores que as mulheres eutróficas. No entanto, quando o pico de torque foi analisado proporcionalmente ao peso corporal, estes valores foram menores, não sendo encontrada diferença entre os grupos (p0,05). Para o Bunkie Test, o grupo com excesso de peso apresentou pior desempenho na funcionalidade, principalmente nos movimentos de extensão, em decúbito dorsal, dos membros inferiores direito (p=0,011), esquerdo (p= 0,004) e na manutenção do tronco em decúbito lateral direito (p=0,008). Conclui-se que o excesso de peso pode alterar diretamente a força muscular e interferir na funcionalidade de tronco de mulheres jovens, sugerindo um desequilíbrio muscular em tronco e membros inferiores.Palavras-chave: Força Muscular. Funcionalidade. THE INFLUENCE OF OVERWEIGHT ON MUSCLE STRENGTH AND FUNCTION IN YOUNG WOMENABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to verify the influence of overweight on muscle strength and functionality in young women. This is a cross-sectional analytical study that was conducted with 54 women aged 18 and 30 years – twenty-five (25) were overweight and twenty-nine (29) were eutrophic. Muscle strength was assessed by an isokinetic dynamometer, whereas functionality was assessed by the Bunkie Test. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS program (Sciences Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). As a result, the present study identified that overweight women can generate absolute peak torque in the 1st grade (p = 0.023), in the 2nd grade (p = 0.009), and in the 2nd highest grade (p = 0.009) than eutrophic women. However, when the peak torque was analyzed proportionally to the body weight, these values were lower, and no difference was found between the groups (p 0.05). For the Bunkie Test, the overweight group presented worse performance in the functionality, especially in the extension movements, in the dorsal decubitus position, of the right lower limbs (p = 0.011), left (p = 0.004) and in the maintenance of the decubitus trunk right side (p = 0.008). It is concluded that overweight can directly affect muscle strength and interfere with the trunk function of young women, suggesting a muscle imbalance in the trunk and lower limbs.Keywords: Muscle Strength.
