Abstract Background The cross-legged sitting posture (CLS) is assumed by young adults’ results in a bent and unbalanced posture. The study purpose was to assess the effect of sitting in a cross-legged position (knee on knee) on lumbar proprioception. Thirty-six participants of both genders aged from 18 to 25 were selected and divided equally into group A who adapt to a cross-legged sitting posture and group B who adapt to erect sitting (not prefer cross-legged sitting). The Biodex System 3 pro isokinetic dynamometer was utilized to assess the lumbar proprioception by testing the lumbar region repositioning accuracy. Results The lumbar repositioning error of group A increased statistically significantly as compared to group B (p < 0.05). Conclusions Cross-legged sitting posture negatively affects lumbar proprioception compared with participants who adapt to erect sitting, and this effect should be considered in the avoidance of sitting in a cross-legged position and in prevention and intervention programs of lumbar proprioception impairment.

(1) Background: the present study examined the isokinetic peak torque exerted by both knee extensors and flexors, anterior–posterior imbalance and the magnitude and direction of inter-limb asymmetry in professional and academy soccer players. (2) Methods: one hundred soccer players (professional = 50, elite academy = 50) volunteered to take part in this investigation. An isokinetic dynamometer was used to measure the knee extensor (quadriceps) and flexors muscle (hamstrings) torques of the limbs as well as inter-limb asymmetries—using a standard percentage difference equation. (3) Results: professional players exhibited significantly greater (effect size [ES] = large) strength levels in the quadriceps and hamstrings under both testing conditions, significantly higher (small to moderate) intra-limb ratio values for 60°·s−1 but not for the 300°·s−1 test condition, significantly (small to moderate) lower inter-limb asymmetry values for all test conditions, with the exception of the hamstrings at 60°·s−1 and the direction of asymmetry was poor to slight, indicating that limb dominance was rarely the same between groups. (4) Conclusions: this study shows that isokinetic assessments, i.e., peak torque exerted by both knee extensors and flexors and intra-limb ratio, and the subsequent inter-limb asymmetry, i.e., magnitude and direction, can differentiate between professional and academy soccer players.

Aim: This study aimed to compare the immediate and long-term effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) contract-relax-antagonist-contract (CRAC) exercises versus static stretching on proprioception and flexibility in males with hamstring shortness. Patients & methods: Knee extension angle test was used to measure flexibility and isokinetic dynamometer to evaluate proprioception. Assessments were evaluated at baseline, after first exercise and eighth week. The hamstring stretching was applied 3 days a week for 8 weeks. Results: Flexibility and position sense were similar in the immediate and long term (p > 0.05). However, the motion sense increased significantly in long term within the PNF CRAC group (p = 0.02). Conclusion: Both stretching exercises are effective for improving flexibility. Moreover, PNF CRAC improved motion sense more than static stretching in the long term. This study aims to assess the relationship between scapular upward rotation (SUR) across varying humeral-elevation angles (HEAs) and shoulder isokinetic strength and ratio in professional baseball pitchers. The subjects were professional baseball pitchers (n = 16) without a history of shoulder injury in the last six months. The subject’s SUR angles were measured with the humerus elevated at HEAs of 0° (at rest), 60°, 90°, and 120° to the scapular plane. Shoulder isokinetic strength was evaluated for shoulder internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER) strength (PT%BW and TW%BW), and the ER/IR strength ratios were determined at 60, 120 and 180°/s using an isokinetic dynamometer. The SUR angle at an HEA of 0° was positively correlated with IR strength at 120°/s (r = 0.535) and 180°/s (r = 0.522). The SUR angle at an HEA of 60° was negatively correlated with the ER/IR strength ratios at 60°/s (r = −0.505) and 120°/s (r = −0.500). The SUR angle at an HEA of 90° was negatively correlated with the ER/IR strength ratios at 60°/s (r = −0.574; r = −0.554) and 120°/s (r = −0.521; r = −0.589) as well as with ER strength at 180°/s (r = −0.591, r = −0.556). The SUR angle at an HEA of 120° was negatively correlated with ER strength at 60°/s (r = −0.558), 120°/s (r = −0.504; r = −0.524), and 180°/s (r = −0.543) and the ER/IR strength ratio at 60°/s (r = −0.517). In this study, we found that the ratio of isokinetic strength between ER and IR became closer to the normal range on increasing the SUR angle. In particular, an HEA of 90°, which resembles the pitching motion, showed a clear relationship between SUR, shoulder ER, and the ratio of ER/IR isokinetic strength in professional baseball pitchers.

Whole-body vibration training (WBVT) is emerging as an alternative exercise method that be easily performed by older adults. This clinical trial investigates the efficacy of WBVT in improving muscle strength and physical performance before resistance exercise, in comparison to conventional resistance exercise after stretching exercise in older adults. The WBVT group (n = 20) performed WBVT using a vibrating platform (SW-VC15™), followed by strengthening exercises. The control group (n = 20) performed stretching instead of WBVT. Both groups underwent a total of 12 sessions (50 min per session). The primary outcome was isokinetic dynamometer. The secondary outcomes were grip strength, short physical performance battery (SPPB), a 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36), and body composition analysis. In all results, only the time effect was significant, and the group effect or time x group effect was not. Both groups showed a significant increase in isokinetic dynamometer. Although there was no significant group effect, the increase in mean peak torque was greater in the WBVT group. The only WBVT group showed significant improvement in SPPB. In SF-36, only the control group showed significant improvements. WBVT can be safely performed by older adults and may be an alternative exercise method to boost the effect of strengthening exercise.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of pre-exercise heat pack treatment on muscle activity and markers of muscle damage after exercise-induced damage.METHODS: Ten healthy male university students were tested for 3 weeks. They were exposed to three conditions (non-warm-up exercise, warm-up exercise, and heat pack treatment) before exercise. The experiment was conducted at 1-week intervals for every participant. The warm-up exercise was performed by combining a modified active warm-up with a cycle ergometer and an isokinetic dynamometer. The main exercise, which modified the exercise-induced muscle damage protocol, was conducted by flexing and extending the knee joint using an isokinetic dynamometer. The heat pack treatment before the exercise involved moist heat application for 20 min.RESULTS: The changes in blood muscle fatigue markers and blood muscle damage markers were not significantly different between the groups (α>.05). However, significant differences were observed in the time immediately after exercise, 10-min recovery, 30-min recovery, and 60-min recovery (<i>p</i><.05). A statistically significant difference was observed in the change in pain in the heat pack treatment group (<i>p</i><.05).CONCLUSIONS: Heat pack treatment for 20 min before exercise did not minimize the muscle damage markers and fatigue markers following exercise-induced damage, but reduced immediate muscle soreness. Use of heat pack treatment was associated with a change in muscle activity and improvement in certain aspects of muscle soreness.

Background Motor fatigability (i.e. contraction-induced reduction in muscle strength) from a concentric task associate stronger to walking and perception of fatigue in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS), compared with an isometric task. However, the central and peripheral contributions of motor fatigability between these tasks have not been investigated. Objective Compare the central and peripheral contributions of motor fatigability in the knee extensors in a sustained isometric fatigability protocol versus a concentric fatigability protocol and in pwMS versus healthy controls (HCs). Methods Participants (n=31 pwMS; n=15 HCs) underwent neuromuscular testing before and immediately after two knee extensor fatigability tasks (sustained isometric and concentric) in an isokinetic dynamometer. Neuromuscular testing of fatigability consisted of maximal voluntary contraction, voluntary activation (central/neural contributor), and resting twitch (peripheral/muscular contributor) determined by the interpolated twitch technique. Results Sustained isometric and concentric fatigability protocols resulted in motor fatigability for both pwMS and HCs, with no between-protocols differences for either group. Regression analysis showed that motor fatigability variance in pwMS was mainly attributed to central fatigability in the sustained isometric protocol and to both central and peripheral fatigability in the concentric protocol. In HCs, the variance in sustained isometric and concentric fatigability were attributed to both peripheral and central fatigability. Conclusion Central and peripheral contributions of motor fatigability differed between sustained isometric and concentric protocols as well as between pwMS and HCs. These between-protocol differences in pwMS provide a neuromuscular dimension to the reported difference in the strength of associations of concentric and isometric tasks to walking and perception of fatigue in pwMS.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between strength and throwing velocity is much investigated in handball, but core strength is largely ignored. Only four studies have investigated the effect of core training on handball throwing velocity, reporting conflicting results in amateur players. However, lack of specificity and deficient technical execution of throwing in amateurs can obscure the results. OBJECTIVE: To examine the direct association between trunk flexion strength and throwing velocity in elite handball players, using women as a model. METHODS: Sixteen women players from an elite-level Norwegian handball team participated in the study. Strength in trunk flexion, shoulder extension, internal shoulder rotation, and forearm pronation was assessed using isokinetic dynamometer measurements (peak moment, total work, angular impulse). Throwing velocity in both the standing throw with run-up and the jump throw was determined from motion capture measurements. To account for arm strength, the association between trunk flexion strength and throwing velocity was examined using partial correlation analyses. RESULTS: No significant association was found between any measure of trunk flexion strength and throwing velocity for either throwing technique (explained variance ⩽ 13.7%). CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that isolated, dynamic trunk flexion strength is not a differentiating factor for handball throwing velocity in elite women players.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) requires complex medical care because of multiple consequences especially on daily activities. Muscular involvement is part of the problem and may be treatable. OBJECTIVE: To analyze trunk muscle strength using an isokinetic dynamometer in female adolescents with AIS one year after orthopedic treatment by brace and compare the findings to a matched group of an asymptomatic cohort. METHODS: The trunk flexors and extensors strength was measured using an isokinetic dynamometer at 60, 90 and 120∘/s. Peak Moment (PM), Mean Power (MP) and the flexor/extensor ratio in 100 patients aged 14 to 18 years old were compared to a control group (N= 32) of asymptomatic age-matched females. In the AIS group, correlation analyses were computed to search for contributing factors to isokinetic performances, including morphological characteristics of patients, as well as clinical and radiological characteristics of the scoliosis. RESULTS: The trunk flexors in the AIS group were significantly but moderately (15%) weaker across speeds compared to their control counterparts at all speeds. No parallel weakness was noted for the extensors. While the MP of AIS patients was significantly weaker than that of the controls, 33% for flexors and by 31% for extensors, no significant differences were observed for the F/E ratios. The correlational analyses has indicated that weight and BMI were contributing factors at all speeds. CONCLUSION: Adolescents with AIS had weaker trunk extensors and mostly flexors compared to healthy females. Within this AIS population, weight and BMI seem to have a negative impact on muscular performances, whereas clinical and radiological characteristics of the scoliosis do not seem to contribute.
