Recent advances in research and manufacturing techniques of natural fiber based composites have allowed the manufacturers to use natural fiber based composites in various applications. Natural fiber based composites are fast emerging as viable alternative to traditional materials due to their unique properties. This paper discusses the development of new natural fiber hybrid composites using mengkuang and silk fibre to achieve a unique natural fiber composites. The effects of hybridization between woven mengkuang / natural silk fiber on mode II delamination (GIIC) of laminated composites were investigated by performing the End-Notched Flexure (ENF) test. The composite samples were prepared using hand lay-up method with compression machine. After fabrication, the test specimens were subjected to ENF testing for mode II delamination based on ASTM D790-03 standards. The additional of natural silk fiber in composites fabrication provided an excellent improvement in the rate of critical strain energy release, GIIC. The Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) images show the delamination behaviour of the samples after failure is based on the arrangement of mengkuang and silk fibre.

The main objective of this work was to investigate the effect of hybridization on the mechanical and thermal properties of intralaminar natural fiber-reinforced hybrid composites based on sisal. Ramie, sisal and curauá fibers were selected as natural fiber reinforcements for the epoxy matrix based composites, which were produced by the hand lay-up technique. Tensile, flexural and impact tests were carried out according to American society for testing and materials (ASTM) standards to characterize the hybrid composites, while differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to evaluate the thermal properties. It was found that the mechanical properties are improved by hybridization of sisal based composites. The thermal analysis showed that the hybridization did not significantly affect the thermal stability of the composites. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the fracture surface of the tested specimens. The SEM images showed a brittle fracture of the matrix and fiber breakage near the matrix.

Multiwall Carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are frequently attractive due to their novel physical and chemical characteristics, as well as their larger aspect ratio and higher conductivity. Therefore, MWCNTs can allow tremendous possibilities for the improvement of the necessarily unique composite materials system. The present work deals with the fabrication of Cu-Fe/CNTs hybrid composites manufactured by powder metallurgy techniques. Copper powder with 10 vol. % of iron powder and different volume fractions of Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) were mixed to get hybrid composites. The hybrid composites were fabricated by adding 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2 vol.% of MWCNTs to Cu- 10% Fe mixture using a mechanical mixer. The samples were compressed under a load of 700 MPa using a hydraulic press to compact the samples. Sintering was done at 900°C for 2 h at 5ºC/min heating rate. The microscopic structure was studied using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The effect of CNTs on the mechanical and wear properties, such as micro-hardness, dry sliding wear, density, and porosity were studied in detail. The wear tests were carried out at a fixed time of 20 minutes while the applied loads were varied (5, 10, 15, and 20 N). SEM images revealed that CNTs were uniformly distributed with relative agglomeration within the Cu/Fe matrix. The results showed that the hardness, density, and wear rates decreased while the percentage of porosity increased with increasing the CNT volume fraction. Furthermore, the wear rate for all the CNTs contents increased with the applied load.

The influence of various graphene nano-platelets (GNPs) content on the tensile, flexural and Charpy impact characteristics of carbon, Kevlar and hybrid carbon/Kevlar fibers reinforced epoxy matrix composites was investigated. Both of composite configurations as carbon and Kevlar at outer and core skins were experimentally tested. The SEM images for flexural specimens were taken to observe the adhesion mechanism of GnPs particles with fiber/epoxy system. It is found that hybridization with Kevlar layers is contributed a positive effect on the hybrid carbon/Kevlar laminate structures in terms of tensile, flexural and impact behaviour. The incorporation of GnPs particles in hybrid and non-hybrid composite samples results in significant improvements in tensile, flexural and impact properties, and the greatest improvement occurs within the GnPs particle content of 0.1 and 0.25 wt%, indicating that the interfacial bonding between the matrix and the fibers is better due to the large surface area of the GnPs and the good entanglement between the GnPs layers and the matrix chains. The samples of impact test are experimented for edgewise and flatwise directions.

Multiscale hybrid composites were prepared using varying weight percentages (0 to 5) of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as nanofiller and a fixed weight percentage (20) of short glass fibres as micro filler (in polypropylene (PP) matrix. The shear and extensional viscosity of the composites was measured using a capillary rheometer. It was observed that even at higher shear rates the synergism of micro and nanofillers in the matrix significantly enhanced the melt viscosity. The complex nanotube network entanglement with micro fillers and PP chains imparted restrictions to the polymer chain movements. The prepared samples were subjected to thermal ageing at 100°C for 4 days in hot air oven. After ageing, multiscale composite with 3 wt% MWCNTs exhibited 28.57% enhancement in strain at break, whereas the tensile strength and modulus reduced by 6.8% and 8% respectively. The fracture toughness properties like strain energy release rate and critical stress intensity factor were not affected for multiscale composite at the optimum content of 3 wt% MWCNT, even after thermal ageing.

In the present study, dielectric and microwave absorbing properties of barium titanate (BaTiO3) and strontium ferrite (SrFe12O19) filled thermoplastic polyurethane composites were investigated. The variations of the dielectric parameters of the BaTiO3 filled composite samples with filler concentration were also modeled and simulated by the power-law model to predict dielectric coefficients of the samples for higher filler concentrations. Comparing the prediction of the Power-law model and experimental measured dielectric values indicate that the Power-law model predicts dielectric parameters of the composite with acceptable accuracy. Microwave absorption analyses of the composite samples showed that SrFe12O19 is more effective than BaTiO3 on the enhancement of microwave absorption capability of TPU. The hybrid composite samples that contained both SrFe12O19 and BaTiO3 were also prepared, and their microwave absorption performance was evaluated. It was observed that much lower RL values than that of the composite samples, which were filled SrFe12O19 or BaTiO3 could be obtained by the hybrid composites. However, absorption bandwidth of them was narrower than counterparts that contained the same amount of SrFe12O19.

Composites are becoming essential part of today’s material because they offer advantages such as low weight, corrosion resistance, high fatigue strength; faster assembly etc. composites are generating curiosity and interest all over the worlds. The attempts can be found in literature for composite materials high strength fiber and also natural fiber like jute, flax and sisal natural fibers provides data but there is need of experimental data availability for unidirectional natural fiber composite with seldom natural fiber like cotton, palm leaf etc., it can provide a feasible range of alternative materials to suitable conventional material. It was decided to carry out the systematic experimental study for the effect of volume fraction of reinforcement on longitudinal strength as well as Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) using developed mould-punch set up and testing aids. The testing is carried out as per ASTM D3039/3039M-08. The comparative assessment of obtained experimental results with literature is also carried out, which forms an important constituent of present work. It is also observed through SEM images and theoretical investigations that interface/interphase plays and important role in natural fiber composite.

An experimental analysis has been carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of composites reinforced by sisal, coir, and banana fibres into epoxy resin matrix. The natural fibres were extracted by retting and manual processes. The composites fabricated by epoxy resin and reinforcement in the hybrid combination of Sisal-Banana and Sisal-Coir with the volume fraction of fibres varying from 5% to 30%. It has been identified that the mechanical properties increase with the increase of volume fraction of fibres to a certain extent and then decreases. The hybridization of the reinforcement in the composite shows greater mechanical properties when compared to individual type of natural fibres reinforced. For all the composites tested, the tensile strength of the composite increased up to 25% of volume fraction of the fibres and further for the increase in the volume fraction of fibre the mechanical properties were decreased. As same as tensile properties, the flexural and impact strength also increased linearly up to 25% of volume fraction of fibres and further for the increase in the volume fraction of fibre the mechanical properties were slightly decreased.
