This paper describes a preliminary investigarion as the first part of a research programme being conducted at UTM on the subject of timber-concrete composite structural members. The purpose of this preliminary test was to establish the effectiveness of various types of shear connectors. The types of shear connectors investigated were nails, iron pipes and steel studs. It was found that steel studs were the most rigid connectors and nails were the weakest. The test results indicmed that composite construction of timber-concrete has potential to be applied in Malaysia, especially for the construction of houses and rural bridges.

In conventional composite construction for hot-rolled steel (HRS) section, the composite action is usually achieved by using headed studs shear connectors. But, for cold-formed steel (CFS) section, the use of headed studs is not feasible as the section is very thin and difficult to be weld.  Therefore, an innovative way of shear connection mechanism of using bolt and nut is suggested in this study. This paper presents the feasibility of using bolt as shear connector by presenting experimental test results so as to explore more on their capability to be used as shear connectors. The study investigated the structural capability of the proposed bolted shear connector when used in concrete known as Self-compacting concrete (SCC) integrated with CFS to provide the required composite action. Push out test specimens with bolted shear connector of grade 8.8 at designated intervals longitudinally spaced were fabricated, cast and tested to failure. The results showed that the proposed shear connector was structurally capable and also an appreciable strength resistance was achieved.

Thispaper presents an experimental study to strengthen an existing bridge usingpre-stressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) materials. The method using pre-stressed hybrid fiber reinforced polymer(HFRP) to strengthened structural members is an emerging pre-stressed strengtheningtechnology. In this study, experimental data selected from result of staticloading test conducted to hollow slabs with CFRP/GFRP has been compared with specimenswithout strengthening. Test results showed that the strengthening methoddeveloped in this study could effectively reduce the stress in hollow slab, improving the flexural rigidity and inhibiting the concrete from fracture.

Perimeter control is used to regulate transfer flows between urban regions. The greedy control (GC) method takes either the minimum or the maximum for the control inputs. Although it has the advantage of simplicity for real-time feasibility, a few existing studies have shown that it can sometimes have negative impacts because of unnecessary transfer flow restrictions. To reduce unnecessary restrictions, this study provides a method that gives flexibility to ease the strict conditions of the conventional GC. First, we propose a modification as a way of granting exceptions to the flow restriction under specific conditions. Second, we develop an algorithm to determine the threshold dynamically for accepting the exception, by comparing the possible outflow loss of the subject region and the possible outflow gain of its neighboring regions. The test results show that this flexible greedy control can handle the balance between the transfer demands and the greed of regions for securing the supply level, while increasing the performance in both vehicle hours traveled and trip completion.

An experimental investigation is performed on various cold-formed profiled sheets to study the connection behavior of composite deck slab actions using bolted shear connectors. Various profiles like dovetailed (or) re-entrant profiles, rectangular profiles and trapezoidal profiles are used in the present investigation. This experimental investigation deals with the evaluation of various parameters such as the ultimate load carrying capacity versus deflection, load versus slip, ductility ratio, strain energy and modes of failure in composite slab specimens with varying profiles. From the test results the performance of dovetailed profiled composite slabs’ resistance is significantly higher than the other two profiled composite deck slabs.

This paper reports the experimental results to evaluate in-plane shear performance of insulated concrete sandwich panel (ICSP) with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) grid shear connectors. The variables considered in this study are the grid size (35 and 53mm) of GFRP shear connectors and the types of insulation (expanded polystyrene, EPS and extruded polystyrene with special slots, XPSS). For loading in-plane shear force to interface between inner and outer wall of ICSP system, the ICSP specimens were supported vertically at the bottom edge of the two concrete outer walls by steel blocks. The test results indicate that ICSP with XPSS developed higher shear flow strengths in ICSP with EPS when 35mm spacing of GFRP grid is used. Also, the test results indicated that as the grid spacing of GFRP shear connector decreases, the shear flow strength of ICSP with XPSS insulation was higher, but the shear flow strength of ICSP with EPS insulation was lower.

Connection design is critical in timber buildings since the connections tend to have lower strength than the structural members themselves and they tend to fail in a brittle manner. The effect of connection geometry on the fire performance of a hybrid steel-timber shear connection is investigated by full-scale testing. These tests were conducted by exposing the test specimens to the standard time-temperature curve defined by CAN/ULC-S101 (CAN/ULC-S101, 2007). Test results showed that the fire resistance of these connections depends on the load ratio, the type of connection and the relative exposure of the steel plate to fire. Finite element models of the connections under fire were constructed using ABAQUS/CAE and these were validated using the test results. These numerical model results correlate well with test results with ±8.32% variation.
