Load Redistribution on Lead Screw Threads Wearing Under Varying Operating Conditions

The load applied to a lead screw assembly is distributed amongst the engaged threads of its wearing nut in a manner that can range from highly nonuniform to nearly uniform. Nonuniform load distributions can arise when new or unworn threads are initially placed into service or, alternatively, in worn threads whereupon the operating conditions are changed from pre-existing conditions at steady-state wear. In threads wearing under constant conditions, nonuniform load distributions evolve to uniform load distributions with sufficient continued sliding as the most heavily loaded threads wear most rapidly, causing their loads to be redistributed to those threads less heavily loaded. Using a newly implemented discrete-thread numerical approach, an example lead screw with rigid nut and elastic screw body having flexible meshed thread pairs is modeled here to demonstrate the broad distribution of thread loads on a new lead screw assembly that gradually evolves toward uniformity as the coupled consideration of thread loading and wear depth approaches a steady-state of equal rates of thread wear. Thread load redistributions brought about by linear ramp changes in applied load, or temperature in the case of a nut/screw pair of dissimilar materials, are predicted at various rates of ramp between prior and future steady operating conditions. While showing the expected maintenance of uniform thread loading under slowly ramped conditions, this numerical approach was verified in cases of rapid ramps approaching step changes, for which existing closed-form analytical models provide agreement. At intermediate rates, this numerical model is complemented by newly expanded closed-form analytical models of both discrete- and continuous-thread types that describe asymptotic behavior during extended ramps.

ABSTRACT The use of studded tires has been a subject of controversy from the time they came into market. While studded tires contribute to traffic safety under severe winter conditions by increasing tire friction on icy roads, they also cause damage to the road surface when running on bare roads. Consequently, one of the main challenges in studded tire development is to reduce road wear while still ensuring a good grip on ice. Therefore, a research project was initiated to gain understanding about the mechanisms and influencing parameters involved in road wear by studded tires. A test method using the institute's internal drum test bench was developed. Furthermore, mechanisms causing road wear by studded tires were derived from basic analytical models. These mechanisms were used to identify the main parameters influencing road wear by studded tires. Using experimental results obtained with the test method developed, the expected influences were verified. Vehicle driving speed and stud mass were found to be major factors influencing road wear. This can be explained by the stud impact as a dominant mechanism. By means of the test method presented, quantified and comparable data for road wear caused by studded tires under controllable conditions can be obtained. The mechanisms allow predicting the influence of tire construction and variable operating conditions on road wear.

An on-line respiration meter is presented to monitor three types of respiration rates of activated sludge and to calculate effluent and influent short term biochemical oxygen demand (BODst) in the continuous activated sludge process. This work is to verify if the calculated BODst is reliable and the assumptions made in the course of developing the proposed procedure were acceptable. A mathematical model and a dynamic simulation program are written for an activated sludge model plant along with the respiration meter based on mass balances of BODst and DO. The simulation results show that the three types of respiration rate reach steady state within 15 minutes under reasonable operating conditions. As long as the respiration rate reaches steady state the proposed procedure calculates the respiration rate that is equal to the simulated. Under constant and dynamic BODst loading, the proposed procedure is capable of calculating the effluent and influent BODst with reasonable accuracy.

Background: The security assessment plays a crucial role in the operation of the modern interconnected power system network. Methods: Hence, this paper addresses the application of k-means clustering algorithm equipped with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and silhouette analysis for the classification of system security states. The proposed technique works on three principal axes; the first stage involves contingency quantification based on developed insecurity indices, the second stage includes dataset preparation to enhance the overall performance of the proposed method using PCA and silhouette analysis, and finally the application of the clustering algorithm over data. Results: The proposed composite insecurity index uses available synchronized measurements from Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) to assess the development of cascading outages. Considering different operational scenarios and multiple levels of contingencies (up to N-3), Fast Decoupled Power Flow (FDPF) have been used for contingency replications. The developed technique applied to IEEE 14-bus and 57-bus standard test system for steady-state security evaluation. Conclusion: The obtained results ensure the robustness and effectiveness of the established procedure in the assessment of the system security irrespective of the network size or operating conditions.

The paper presents a simple model of recrystallization with countercurrent flows of the solution and the crystals being purified. The model assumes steady-state operating conditions, an equilibrium between the outlet streams of each stage, and the same equilibrium temperature and distribution coefficient for all stages. With these assumptions, the model provides the basis for analyzing the variation in the degree of purity as a function of the number of recrystallization stages. The analysis is facilitated by the use of a diagram constructed for the limiting case of perfect removal of the mother liquor from the crystals between the stages.

An increasing interest is arising in developing miniaturized antennas in the microwave range. However, even when the adopted antennas dimensions are small compared with the wavelength, radiation performances have to be preserved to keep the system-operating conditions. For this purpose, magneto-dielectric materials are currently exploited as promising substrates, which allows us to reduce antenna dimensions by exploiting both relative permittivity and permeability. In this paper, we address generic antennas in resonant conditions and we develop a general theoretical approach, not based on simplified equivalent models, to establish topologies most suitable for exploiting high permeability and/or high-permittivity substrates, for miniaturization purposes. A novel definition of the region pertaining to the antenna near-field and of the associated field strength is proposed. It is then showed that radiation efficiency and bandwidth can be preserved only by a selected combinations of antenna topologies and substrate characteristics. Indeed, by the proposed independent approach, we confirm that non-dispersive magneto-dielectric materials with relative permeability greater than unit, can be efficiently adopted only by antennas that are mainly represented by equivalent magnetic sources. Conversely, if equivalent electric sources are involved, the antenna performances are significantly degraded. The theoretical results are validated by full-wave numerical simulations of reference topologies.

The paper describes the design process for a controlled pulse turbocharging system (CPT) on a 5 cylinder 4-stroke marine engine and highlights the potential for improved engine performance as well as reduced smoke emissions under steady state and transient operating conditions, as offered by the following technologies: • controlled pulse turbocharging, • high pressure air injection onto the compressor impeller as well as into the air receiver, and • an electronic engine control system, including a hydraulic powered electric actuator. Calibrated engine simulation computer models based on the results of tests performed on the engine in its baseline configuration were used to design the CPT components. Various engine tests with CPT under steady state and transient operating conditions show the engine optimization process and how the above-mentioned technologies benefit engine behavior in both generator and propeller law operation.

Abstract A volute’s loss coefficient is highly sensitive to Mach number, circumferential velocity and flow rate at volute inlet. In case of a backswept impeller, these parameters are coupled to each other. An increased flowrate leads to a steeper absolute flow angle at impeller exit and hence to a decrease of circumferential velocity. The absolute Mach number is also altered. Therefore, in order to investigate the effects of flowrate and flow angle separately, one would have to vary the diffuser width together with the flowrate, keeping the flow angle constant. This corresponds to coupling the volute with aerodynamically similar impellers, designed for higher and lower flowrates. Since this is elaborate, there is no adequate study available in open literature, assessing a volute’s global loss map. In this work, a new numerical approach for the prediction of a volute’s representative loss map is presented: The volute is calculated by means of steady CFD as a standalone component. The inlet boundary conditions are carefully selected by means of 1D and applied together with different diffuser widths. This allows for separate investigation of the impacts of flow angle, flow rate and Mach number. Validation against full stage CFD confirms the applicability of the standalone model. The results exhibit that minimum losses do not necessarily occur at the theoretical matching point but either when the volute is smaller or bigger, depending on the inlet flow angle. Investigations of the loss mechanisms at different operating conditions provide useful guidelines for volute design. Finally, the validity of these study’s findings for volutes with different geometrical features is examined by comparison with experimental data as well as with fullstage CFD.

Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) often relies on simplified analytical models to compute the parameters required to build the power balance equations of a coupled vibro-acoustic system. However, the vibro-acoustic of modern structural components, such as thick sandwich composites, ribbed panels, isogrids and metamaterials, is often too complex to be amenable to analytical developments without introducing further approximations. To overcome this limitation, a more general numerical approach is considered. It was shown in previous publications that, under the assumption that the structure is made of repetitions of a representative unit cell, a detailed Finite Element (FE) model of the unit cell can be used within a general and accurate numerical SEA framework. In this work, such framework is extended to account for structural-acoustic coupling. Resonant as well as non-resonant acoustic and structural paths are formulated. The effect of any acoustic treatment applied to coupling areas is considered by means of a Generalized Transfer Matrix (TM) approach. Moreover, the formulation employs a definition of pressure loads based on the wavenumber-frequency spectrum, hence allowing for general sources to be fully represented without simplifications. Validations cases are presented to show the effectiveness and generality of the approach.
