High-temperature turbine technology (HTTT) when applied to the reheat-gas-turbine combined cycle (RHGT/CC) offers distinct advantages over the presently contemplated United States Department of Energy (DOE) HTTT simple-cycle gas-turbine combined cycle (SCGT/CC) being developed for gaseous fuel derived from coal. Specific improvements are: 1) higher combined-cycle efficiency, 2) higher specific output per unit of air flow, 3) less critical high-temperature nozzle-vane and rotating-blade surface area to be cooled, 4) less strategic high temperature metal material to be used, and 5) less overall cycle-cooling degradation allowing growth potential. New cooling techniques employing steam are required to accomplish these projections which necessitates advanced research and development and presently unavailable mathematical analytical approaches.

Research has been conducted under United States Department of Energy (USDOE) Contract DE-AC21-86MC21023 to develop a new type of coal-fired, combined cycle, gas turbine-steam turbine plant for electric power generation. This new type of plant — called a 2nd Generation or Advanced Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combustion (APFB) plant — offers the promise of efficiencies greater than 48 percent (HHV) with both emissions and a cost of electricity that are significantly lower than those of conventional pulverized-coal-fired plants with scrubbers. In the 2nd Generation PFB plant coal is partially gasified in a pressurized fluidized bed reactor to produce a coal derived syngas and a char residue. The syngas fuels the gas turbine and the char fuels a pressurized circulating fluidized bed (PCFB) boiler that powers the steam turbine and supplies hot vitiated air for the combustion of the syngas. A conceptual design and an economic analysis was previously prepared for this plant, all based on the use of a Siemens Westinghouse W501F gas turbine with projected gasifier, PCFB boiler, and gas turbine topping combustor performance data. Having tested these components at a pilot plant scale and observed better than expected performance, the referenced conceptual design has been updated to reflect that test experience and to incorporate more advanced turbines e.g. a Siemens Westinghouse W501G gas turbine and a 2400 psig/1050°F/1050°F/2-1/2 in. Hg steam turbine. This paper presents the performance and economics of the updated plant design along with data on some alternative plant arrangements.

Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. have begun a joint development program on key technologies for a next generation gas turbine which aims for a combined cycle efficiency over 55%. Under the program, advanced cooling technologies, better heat resistant materials and thy low NOx (DLN) combustion technologies are being developed. For verifying high temperature technologies, turbine testing is going to be performed using the HTDU (High Temperature Demonstration Unit) at Takasago Machinery Works, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. This paper describes the general description of the HTDU facility and plans for testing a turbine at a firing temperature of 1500°C.

<p class="1Body">Several modifications have been made to the simple gas turbine cycle in order to increase its thermal efficiency but within the thermal and mechanical stress constrain, the efficiency still ranges between 38 and 42%. The concept of using combined cycle power or CPP plant would be more attractive in hot countries than the combined heat and power or CHP plant. The current work deals with the performance of different configurations of the gas turbine engine operating as a part of the combined cycle power plant. The results showed that the maximum CPP cycle efficiency would be at a point for which the gas turbine cycle would have neither its maximum efficiency nor its maximum specific work output. It has been shown that supplementary heating or gas turbine reheating would decrease the CPP cycle efficiency; hence, it could only be justified at low gas turbine inlet temperatures. Also it has been shown that although gas turbine intercooling would enhance the performance of the gas turbine cycle, it would have only a slight effect on the CPP cycle performance.</p>

Final component and technology verification tests have been completed for application to a 2600°F rotor inlet temperature gas turbine. These tests have proven the capability of combustor, turbine hot section, and IGCC fuel systems and controls to operate in a combined cycle plant burning a coal-derived gas fuel at elevated gas turbine inlet temperatures (2600–3000°F). This paper presents recent test results and summarizes the overall progress made during the DOE-HTTT Phase II program.

One of the most advanced and most effective technology for electricity generation nowadays based on a gas turbine combined cycle. This technology uses natural gas, synthesis gas from the coal gasification or crude oil processing products as the energy carriers but at the same time, gas turbine combined cycle emits SO2, NOx, and CO2 to the environment. In this paper, a thermodynamic analysis of environmentally friendly, high temperature gas nuclear reactor system coupled with gas turbine combined cycle technology has been investigated. The analysed system is one of the most advanced concepts and allows us to produce electricity with the higher thermal efficiency than could be offered by any currently existing nuclear power plant technology. The results show that it is possible to achieve thermal efficiency higher than 50% what is not only more than could be produced by any modern nuclear plant but it is also more than could be offered by traditional (coal or lignite) power plant.

MHI recently developed a 1600°C class J-type gas turbine, utilizing some of the technologies developed in the National Project to promote the development of component technology for the next generation 1700°C class gas turbine. This new frame is expected to achieve higher combined cycle efficiency and will contribute to reduce CO2 emissions. The target combined cycle efficiency of the J type gas turbine will be above 61.5% (gross, ISO standard condition, LHV) and the 1on1 combined cycle output will reach 460MW for 60Hz engine and 670MW for 50Hz engine. This new engine incorporates: 1) A high pressure ratio compressor based on the advanced M501H compressor, which was verified during the M501H development in 1999 and 2001. 2) Steam cooled combustor, which has accumulated extensive experience in the MHI G engine (> 1,356,000 actual operating hours). 3) State-of-art turbine designs developed through the 1700°C gas turbine component technology development program in Japanese National Project for high temperature components. This paper discusses the technical features and the updated status of the J-type gas turbine, especially the operating condition of the J-type gas turbine in the MHI demonstration plant, T-Point. The trial operation of the first M501J gas turbine was started at T-point in February 2011 on schedule, and major milestones of the trial operation have been met. After the trial operation, the first commercial operation has taken place as scheduled under a predominantly Daily-Start-and-Stop (DSS) mode. Afterward, MHI performed the major inspection in October 2011 in order to check the mechanical condition, and confirmed that the hot parts and other parts were in sound condition.

The Garrett/Ford Advanced Gas Turbine Powertrain System Development Project, authorized under NASA Contract DEN3-167, is sponsored by and is part of the United States Department of Energy Gas Turbine Highway Vehicle System Program. Program effort is oriented at providing the United States automotive industry the technology base necessary to produce gas turbine powertrains competitive for automotive applications having: (1) reduced fuel consumption, (2) multi-fuel capability, and (3) low emissions. The AGT101 powertrain is a 74.6 kW (100 hp), regenerated single-shaft gas turbine engine operating at a maximum turbine inlet temperature of 1644 K (2500 °F), coupled to a split differential gearbox and Ford automatic overdrive production transmission. The gas turbine engine has a single-stage centrifugal compressor and a single-stage radial inflow turbine mounted on a common shaft. Maximum rotor speed is 10,472 rad/sec (100,000 rpm). All high-temperature components, including the turbine rotor, are ceramic. AGT101 powertrain development has been initiated, with testing completed on many aerothermodynamic components in dedicated test rigs and start of Mod I, Build 1 engine testing.

The combination of pressurized fluidized bed (PFB) technology and the gas turbine - steam turbine combined-cycle power system offer a unique opportunity for the production of electric power at increased plant efficiency from the direct combustion of high sulfur coal and that is environmentally acceptable without stack gas cleanup. The concept offers the prospect of earlier commercialization than those systems requiring gasification or liquefication of coal to clean fels. This paper presents the design of a 500-MW commercial powerplant prepared in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy sponsored program for the design, construction, and operation of a coal-fired PFB/turbine electric pilot plant. The powerplant approach develops over 60 percent of the plant capacity by multiple gas turbine gas turbine-generators and the balance of the capacity by a steam turbine-generator. The paper describes the fluid bed process selection of an air heater cycle. With two-thirds of the compressor discharge air indirectly heated within an in-bed gas-to-air heat exchanger and one-third of the compressor air involved in the combustion process, technology requirements for hot gas cleanup and turbine protection are minimized. This approach, which offers a coal-pile-to-busbar plant efficiency of over 40 percent is superior to other concepts and contemporary plants in terms of plant arrangement flexibility, part-load performance, power availability, and provides a low risk in development toward commercialization in the 1980’s.

Interest in the reheat-gas turbine (RHGT) as a way to improve combined-cycle efficiency is gaining momentum. Compression intercooling makes it possible to readily increase the reheat-gas-turbine cycle-pressure ratio and at the same time increase gas-turbine output; but at the expense of some combined-cycle efficiency and mechanical complexity. This paper presents a thermodynamic analysis of the intercooled cycle and pinpoints the proper intercooling pressure range for minimum combined-cycle-efficiency loss. At the end of the paper two-intercooled reheat-gas-turbine configurations are presented.
