On the Sliding Wear Behavior of PAEK Composites in Vacuum Environment

In the present study, the tribological behavior of polyaryletherketones (PAEKs) and their composites was investigated in air and vacuum environment. Polymer matrices were filled with either glass or carbon fibers and compared with a standard bearing material containing 10% carbon fiber (CF), 10% graphite, and 10% polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The samples were tested in a pin-on-disk configuration under continuous sliding against a rotating steel disk (AISI 52100) at different sliding speeds. The results indicated that the tribological performance of these materials in vacuum depends on both compositions and test conditions. At low sliding speed, a very low friction and wear coefficients were obtained while at higher speed, severe wear occurred. In particular, CF filled composites showed excessive wear that led to the ignition after opening the vacuum chamber. Experimental results are discussed by analyzing the transfer film and wear debris.

The effects of TiN addition to Si3N4 on its mechanical and wear properties were investigated. The size and content of TiN particles were found having effects on the strength and toughness of Si3N4-based composites. The friction and wear behavior of Si3N4 based composites against AISI-52100 steel were investigated in the ball -on- disc mode in a non-lubrication reciprocation motion. It has been found that under the conditions used all the ceramic components exhibited rather low friction and wear coefficients. For monolithic silicon nitride materials, high friction coefficients between 0.6 and 0.7 and wear coefficients between 1.63 × 10-8 and 1.389 × 10-6 mm3/N.m were measured. The contact load was varied from 100 to 300 N. By adding titanium nitride, the friction coefficients was reduced to a value between 0.4 and 0.5 and wear coefficients between 1.09×10-8 and 0.32×10-6 mm3/N.m at room temperature.

The sliding wear behavior of Cu–O coated steel disks functionalized with n-octadecyl-phosphonic acids was evaluated against aluminum in ball-on-disk tribometer experiments. After 5 m of sliding the friction coefficient of the functionalized sample with maximum molecular coverage is ≤0.3 ± 0.1. Surfaces with lower coverage mitigate friction and wear as well exhibiting initially similar low friction coefficients but reveal the breakdown of lubrication for sliding distances <5 m. The length of the low friction sliding distance before breakdown scales with the coverage of n-octadecylphosphonic acids on the Cu–O surface. Coverage hence determines the tribological behavior of the functionalized surface against sliding aluminum. As the coverage is increased, detrimental asperity contacts between the rubbing surfaces are reduced.

Abstract Gas atomized Al63Cu25Fe12 powders of varying size fractions were plasma sprayed to study the relationships between coating microstructure and tribological behavior. After spraying, annealing was performed on one of the coatings. Abrasion and sliding wear tests were performed on the coatings. The results indicate a correlation between the abrasion resistance and hardness of the coatings. Furthermore, sliding wear tests reveal lower coefficients of friction for the as-sprayed coatings compared to the annealed coatings.

Microstructure and wear properties of the Al2O3-13.wt% TiO2 thermally sprayed coatings before and after remelting were investigated in this study. The coatings were deposited on a pure titanium substrate using the atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) process. The as-sprayed coatings were electron beam (EB) modified in order to improve their compactness and bonding strength.The effect of EB remelting on the microstructure, phase constituents and wear properties was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-Ray diffraction technique and hardness measurements. The sliding wear behavior was tested using a pin on disk method.The results showed that the remelting process had a positive effect removing the lamellar defect of the as-sprayed coating and improving the compactness, hardness and wear behavior.

The 31CrMoV9 steels were plasma nitrided under different gas mixture ratios to investigate an influence of nitrogen amount on wear behavior. The structure, mechanical and tribological behavior of untreated and nitrided 31CrMoV9 steels were analyzed with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), microhardness device, 3D profilometer and pin-on-disk wear tester. The analysis outcomes displayed that the compound layer consists of nitride phases (Fe2N, Fe3N, Fe4N and CrN). Additionally, the thickness of the compound layers, surface hardness and roughness increased with increasing nitrogen amount in the gas mixture. The highest friction coefficient value was obtained at nitrogen amount of 50%, but the lowest value was seen at nitrogen amount of 6%. It was observed that wear resistance of 31CrMoV9 steel improved after plasma nitriding, and the best wear resistance was also obtained from plasma nitrided sample at the gas mixture of 94% H[Formula: see text]% N2.

The dry sliding wear behavior of the Al-12Si-CuNiMg matrix alloy and its composite reinforced with Al2O3 fibers was investigated using a pin-on-disk wear-testing machine. The volume fraction of Al2O3 fibers in the composite was 17 vol.%. Wear tests are conducted under normal loads of 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 N, and sliding velocities of 0.25, 0.50, and 1.0 m/s. Furthermore, the worn surfaces of the matrix alloy and the composite were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that the wear resistance of the composite was inferior to that of the matrix alloy, which could be attributed to the high content of reinforcement and casting porosities in the composite. Worn-surface analysis indicates that the dominant wear mechanisms of both materials were abrasive wear and adhesive wear under the present testing conditions.

The tribological behavior of TiC-based metal matrix composites was investigated via measuring counterpart weight. The composites were prepared using powder metallurgy technique. Wear of counterpart by the composites varying from 35 to 45 % by volume Titanium carbide were observed over a load ranges of 9.81 to 49.05 N and sliding velocities of 2.0, 2.2, 2.4, 2.6, 2.8 and 3.0 m/sec. Detailed wear track micro-graphy was done to verify the effect of sliding condition on wear mechanism. Observations indicate that wear rate of counterpart increases with the increase in load and the sliding velocity and discontinuous wear rate change occurs at a certain load.

Wear-resistant aluminum alloys have enormous potential applications. In this paper, the Al–20Si–5Fe–2Ni alloy was fabricated by hot-pressed sintering, and its dry sliding wear behavior was investigated from 25 °C to 500 °C sliding against Al2O3 ceramic and AISI 52100 steel. The microstructure, phase, high temperature hardness, and worn surface of the sintered alloy were examined. The results indicate that the uniform distribution of Si particles and Al5FeSi intermetallic in the Al matrix contribute to its superior tribological properties. Additionally, the correlation of the tribological behavior of the alloy with the sliding testing conditions was studied, and its wear mechanism was discussed.

ABSTRACTPin-on-disk tests were performed for comparative friction and wear behavior on flat and graded profile boron implanted beryllium samples. Peak, intended boron concentrations of 10, 20, 30 and 40 atom percent were investigated. Auger Electron Spectroscopy was used to determine the boron concentration as a function of depth. Preliminary work was performed to study the effects of (1) a low temperature (450°C, 1–1/2 hours) heat treatment of the implanted specimens and (2) a change in the pin material. All of the boron implanted beryllium samples showed significant improvement versus unimplanted beryllium and an anodized beryllium surface. Graded samples showed comparable friction coefficients but inferior wear resistance with respect to the flat profile samples.
