Effects of Reynolds Number on Drag Reduction in T-Junction Pipes due to Small Obstacles

T-junction pipes are used to distribute one flow into two flows or join two flows into one flow. Separated vortex flow regions near the corners of junctions are caused in these types of flows. They reduce the effective cross-sectional area of the pipe flows and then create large flow resistance or drag. The corners of junctions are generally rounded to avoid flow separation and reduce flow resistance. We tried to reduce the flow resistance of counter-flow T-junction pipes in which two flows in the opposite direction entered the junction, mixed, and then vertically flowed out together by using a simple method. We mounted two small weir-shaped obstacles on the walls of the two upstream pipes by the side around the junction corners, which is a new way we propose of controlling flow separation. The pressure distribution along the pipes was measured and the drag of the T-junction pipe was estimated. Additionally, the effects of the Reynolds number on the flow resistance and its rate of reduction by mounting small obstacles were clarified. The two major results we obtained were: (1) the flow resistance of T-junctions could be reduced by about a maximum of 30% by mounting small obstacles at heights of 0.30 D and 0.47 D (D: pipe diameter) from the upstream of the corner. We also found (2) the rate of reduction in flow resistance increased with decreasing Reynolds numbers between 5–10 × 104, but this decreased rapidly between 2.5–5 × 104.

The low-pressure turbine has become more important in the last few decades because of the increased emphasis on higher overall pressure and bypass ratios. The desire is to increase blade loading to reduce blade counts and stages in the low-pressure turbine of a gas turbine engine. Increased turbine inlet temperatures for newer cycles results in higher temperatures in the low-pressure turbine, especially the latter stages, where cooling technologies are not used. These higher temperatures lead to higher work from the turbine and this, combined with the high loadings, can lead to flow separation. Separation is more likely in engines operating at high altitudes and reduced throttle setting. At the high Reynolds numbers found at takeoff, the flow over a low-pressure turbine blade tends to stay attached. At lower blade Reynolds numbers (25,000 to 200,000), found during cruise at high altitudes, the flow on the suction surface of the low-pressure turbine blades is inclined to separate. This paper is a study on the flow characteristics of the L1A turbine blade at three low Reynolds numbers (60,000, 108,000, and 165,000) and 15 turbulence intensities (1.89% to 19.87%) in a steady flow cascade wind tunnel. With this data, it is possible to examine the impact of Reynolds number and turbulence intensity on the location of the initiation of flow separation, the flow separation zone, and the reattachment location. Quantifying the change in separated flow as a result of varying Reynolds numbers and turbulence intensities will help to characterize the low momentum flow environments in which the low-pressure turbine must operate and how this might impact the operation of the engine. Based on the data presented, it is possible to predict the location and size of the separation as a function of both the Reynolds number and upstream freestream turbulence intensity (FSTI). Being able to predict this flow behavior can lead to more effective blade designs using either passive or active flow control to reduce or eliminate flow separation.

Abstract A detailed heat transfer numerical study of a three-dimensional impinging jet on a roughened isothermal surface is presented and is investigated from flow physics vantage point under the influence of different parameters. The effects of the Reynolds number, roughness location, and roughness dimension on the flow physics and heat transfer parameters are studied. Additionally, the relations between average heat transfer coefficient (AHTC) and flow physics including pressure, wall shear and flow vortices with thermodynamic nonequilibrium are offered. This paper studies the effect of varying both location and dimension of the roughness element which took the shape of square cross-sectional continuous ribs to deliver a favorable trade-off between total pressure loss and heat transfer rate. The roughness element was tested for three different radial locations (R/D) = 1, 1.5, and 2 and at each location its height (i.e., width) (e) was changed from 0.25 to 1 mm in incremental steps of 0.25. The study used a jet angle (α) of 90 deg, jet-to-target distance (H/D = 6), and Re ranges from 10,000 to 50,000, where H is the vertical distance between the target plate and jet exit. The results show that the AHTC can be significantly affected by changing the geometry and dimensions of the roughness element. This variation can be either an augmentation of, or decrease in, the (HTC) when compared with the baseline case. An enhancement of 12.9% in the AHTC was achieved by using optimal location and dimensions of the roughness element at specific Reynolds number. However, a diminution between 10% and 30% in (AHTC) was attained by the use of rib height e = 1 mm at Re = 50k. The variation of both rib location and height showed better contribution in increasing heat transfer for low-range Reynolds numbers.

A great deal of existing nuclear waste is stored as a solid-liquid slurry, and the effective transportation of such systems is an essential element in the successful implementation of almost all waste treatment strategies involving particulate wastes within the nuclear industry. A detailed knowledge of turbulent, particle-laden liquid flow behaviour is therefore obviously important. However, systematic and detailed studies of solid-liquid flows by experimental investigation are still limited for pipe flows, contrary to the significant amount of work available for channel flows. Research is therefore required to understand the effects of physical parameters, such as particle shape, size and size distribution, and solids concentration, on the properties of solid-liquid systems, particularly in horizontal pipe flows where particles may settle out of the flow and form solid beds which can potentially lead to pipe blockages. The presence of particles in a turbulent pipe flow also modifies the characteristics of the flow, thereby changing its ability to maintain particles in suspension. The work described concerns pipe flows over a Reynolds number range of 1,000–10,000, with varying levels of solids concentration within the flow. Measurements of the flow and particle characteristics have been gathered using particle image velocimetry (PIV) and, for high solids concentrations, ultrasound Doppler velocity profiling (UDVP) techniques. This work has demonstrated that the intensity of turbulence within such flows can be significantly affected by the presence of solid particles, with small particles generally attenuating turbulence levels, while large particles often augment turbulence levels from the pipe centre-line to the near-wall region. In addition, the coagulation of particles into larger agglomerates is also of importance, with data demonstrating that whilst turbulence levels are influenced and augmented by such agglomerates at low Reynolds numbers, high turbulence levels at high Reynolds numbers can destroy the agglomerates and reduce their effect on the carrier fluid. Work has also been undertaken to examine the effect of particle size and Reynolds number on particle deposition within the flows, and also to establish the minimum transport velocity required to re-suspend particles from solid beds. All these findings are of importance in enhancing our understanding of flows of particles in pipes which in turn is of value in enabling the design of cost effective and efficient waste treatment processes.

Flow field of a butterfly mimicking flapping model with plan form of various shapes and butterfly-shaped wings is studied. The nature of the unsteady flow and embedded vortical structures are obtained at chord cross-sectional plane of the scaled wings to understand the dynamics of insect flapping flight. Flow visualization and PIV experiments are carried out for the better understanding of the flow field. The model being studied has a single degree of freedom of flapping. The wing flexibility adds another degree to a certain extent introducing feathering effect in the kinematics. The mechanisms that produce high lift and considerable thrust during the flapping motion are identified. The effect of the Reynolds number on the flapping flight is studied by varying the wing size and the flapping frequency. Force measurements are carried out to study the variations of lift forces in the Reynolds number (Re) range of 3000 to 7000. Force experiments are conducted both at zero and finite forward velocity in a wind tunnel. Flow visualization as well as PIV measurement is conducted only at zero forward velocity in a stagnant water tank and in air, respectively. The aim here is to measure the aerodynamic lift force and visualize the flow field and notice the difference with different Reynolds number (Re), and flapping frequency (f), and advance ratios (J=U∞/2ϕfR).

Laminar-to-turbulent transition of pipe flows occurs, for sufficiently high Reynolds numbers, in the form of slugs. These are initiated by disturbances in the entrance region of a pipe flow, and grow in length in the axial direction as they move downstream. Sequences of slugs merge at some distance from the pipe inlet to finally form the state of fully developed turbulent pipe flow. This formation process is generally known, but the randomness in time of naturally occurring slug formation does not permit detailed study of slug flows. For this reason, a special test facility was developed and built for detailed investigation of deterministically generated slugs in pipe flows. It is also employed to generate the puff flows at lower Reynolds numbers. The results reveal a high degree of reproducibility with which the triggering device is able to produce puffs. With increasing Reynolds number, ‘puff splitting’ is observed and the split puffs develop into slugs. Thereafter, the laminar-to-turbulent transition occurs in the same way as found for slug flows. The ring-type obstacle height, h, required to trigger fully developed laminar flows to form first slugs or puffs is determined to show its dependence on the Reynolds number, Re = DU/ν (where D is the pipe diameter, U is the mean velocity in the axial direction and ν is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid). When correctly normalized, h+ turns out to be independent of Reτ (where h+ = hUτ/ν, Reτ = DUτ/ν and $U_{\tau}\,{=}\,\sqrt{\tau_{w}/ \rho}$; τw is the wall shear stress and ρ is the density of the fluid).

SummaryThe paper suggests a simple method of generating intermittent reservoir conditions for an intermittent, cryogenic wind tunnel. Approximate performance estimates are given and it is recommended that further studies be made because this type of tunnel could be valuable in increasing the opportunities for research at high Reynolds numbers.

AbstractThis paper experimentally studies flow separation and aerodynamic performance of a NACA633018 wing using a series of piezoelectric-driven disks, which are located at 12% chord length from the leading edge to generate a spanwise-distributed synthetic jets to excite the passing flow. The experiment is conducted in an open-type wind tunnel with Reynolds numbers (Re) of 8 × 104 and 1.2 × 105, respectively, based on the wing chord. The oscillations of the synthetic jet actuators (SJAs) disturb the neighboring passage flow on the upper surface of the wing before the laminar separation takes place. The disturbances of energy influence the downstream development of boundary layers to eliminate or reduce the separation bubble on the upper surface of the wing. Significant lift increase and drag decrease are found at the tested Reynolds number of 8 × 104 due to the actuators excitation. Furthermore, the effect of drag also reduces dominant with increasing Reynolds number, but the increase on lift is reduced with the Reynolds number increased.

We investigate the spatial stability of compressible, viscous pipe flows with radius-dependent mean density profiles, subjected to solid body rotations. For a fixed Rossby number $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}$ (inverse of the rotational speed), as the Reynolds number $Re$ is increased, the flow transitions from being stable to convectively unstable, usually leading to absolute instability. If flow compressibility is unimportant and $Re$ is held constant, there appears to be a maximum $Re$ below which the flow remains stable irrespective of any rotational speed, or a minimum azimuthal Reynolds number $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}}$ $(=Re/\unicode[STIX]{x1D716})$ is required for any occurrence of absolute instabilities. Once compressible forces are significant, the effect of pressure–density coupling is found to be more severe below a critical $Re$, where as rotational speeds are raised, a stable flow almost directly transitions to an absolutely unstable state. This happens at a critical $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}}$ which reduces with increased flow Mach number, pointing to compressibility aiding in the instability at these lower Reynolds numbers. However, at higher $Re$, above the critical value, the traditional stabilizing role of compressibility is recovered if mean density stratification exists, where the gradients of density play an equally important role, more so at the higher azimuthal modes. A total disturbance energy-based formulation is used to obtain mechanistic understanding at these stability states, where we find the entropic energy perturbations to dominate as the primary instability mechanism, in sharp contrast to the energy due to axial shear, known to play a leading role in incompressible swirling flows.

Analysis of pulsatile flow through exponentially diverging channels reveals the existence of critical mean Reynolds numbers for which the flow separates at a downstream axial station. These Reynolds numbers vary directly with the frequency of flow oscillation and inversely with the rate of channel divergence. Increasing the Reynolds number above its critical value results in a rapid upstream displacement of the point of separation. For a tube of fixed geometry, periodic unsteadiness causes flow separation to occur at lower Reynolds numbers and upstream of a corresponding steady-state situation. The point of separation moves progressively downstream, however, towards its steady-state location, as the frequency of oscillation increases. These results are discussed as consequences of the nonlinear steady streaming phenomenon described in an earlier paper.

Some experimental results on incompressible viscous fluid flow in the gap between two concentric rotating spheres are discussed. The flow field in the spherical gap has been studied qualitatively by flow visualization (photographs) and quantitatively by measurements by the hot-wire technique. For a wide range of Reynolds numbers, the friction torque was measured for several gap widths and a relatively simple method of determining the torque theoretically is given. At higher Reynolds numbers instabilities appear. Their different behaviour for relatively small and large gap widths is demonstrated. For the larger gap widths, the different appearance of the Taylor–Görtler vortices, the reason for their generation, their regimes of existence as well as their influence on the friction torque are thoroughly treated. Detailed information is given on the new effect of the dependence of the wavelength of the vortices on the Reynolds number.
