Numerical Investigation of Deposition Characteristics of Solid CO2 During Choked Flow for CO2 Pipelines

Choke valves are applied to control the pressure in CO2 pipeline. However, the temperature of fluid would drop rapidly because of Joule-Thomson cooling (JTC), which may cause solid CO2 generate and block the pipe. In this work, a three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model, using the Lagrangian method, Reynold’s Stress Transport model (RSM) for turbulence and stochastic tracking model (STM) for particle trajectory, was developed to predict the gas-solid CO2 flow and deposition characteristics downstream pipeline. The model predictions were in good agreement with the experimental data published in the literature. The effects of particle size, flow velocity and pipeline diameter on the fluid-particle flow characteristics were examined. Results showed that the increase in the flow velocity would cause a decrease in particle deposition ratio and there existed the critical particle size that caused the deposition ratio maximum for each velocity. The paper also presents the effects of particle motion on different deposition regions. Moreover, the main deposition region (the sudden expansion region) is the easy to be blocked by the particles. With the increase in pipeline diameter, the particle deposition ratio was decreasing. In addition, it was recommended for Stokes number to avoid 3-8 St.

Particle deposition could decrease the aerodynamic performance and cooling efficiency of turbine vanes and blades. The particle motion in the flow and its temperature are two important factors affecting its deposition. The size of the particle influences both its motion and temperature. In this study, the motion of particles with the sizes from 1 to 20 μm in the first stage of a turbine are firstly numerically simulated with the steady method, then the particle deposition on the vanes and blades are numerically simulated with the unsteady method based on the critical viscosity model. It is discovered that the particle deposition on vanes mainly formed near the leading and trailing edge on the pressure surface, and the deposition area expands slowly to the whole pressure surface with the particle size increasing. For the particle deposition on blades, the deposition area moves from the entire pressure surface toward the tip with the particle size increasing due to the effect of rotation. For vanes, the particle capture efficiency increases with the particle size increasing since Stokes number and temperature of the particle both increase with its size. For blades, the particle capture efficiency increases firstly and then decreases with the particle size increasing.

Ash particle deposition in a high-pressure turbine stage was numerically investigated using steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navie-Stokes (URANS) methods. An inlet temperature profile consisting of Gaussian nonuniformities (hot streaks) was imposed on the vanes, with vane cooling simulated using a constant vane wall temperature. The steady case utilized a mixing plane at the vane–rotor interface, while a sliding mesh was used for the unsteady case. Corrected speed and mass flow were matched to an experiment involving the same geometry, so that the flow solution could be validated against measurements. Particles ranging from 1 to 65 μm were introduced into the vane domain, and tracked using an Eulerian–Lagrangian tracking model. A novel particle rebound and deposition model was employed to determine particles' stick/bounce behavior upon impact with a surface. Predicted impact and capture distributions for different diameters were compared between the steady and unsteady methods, highlighting effects from the circumferential averaging of the mixing plane. The mixing plane simulation was found to generally under predict impact and capture efficiencies compared with the unsteady calculation, as well as under predict particle temperature upon impact with the blade surface. Quantitative impact and capture efficiency trends with the Stokes number are discussed for both the vane and blade, with companion qualitative distributions for the different Stokes regimes.

A series of facultative lagoons operated by Thames Water treating industrial wastewater in Thailand were found to be performing poorly, particularly with respect to the removal of biological oxygen demand (BOD). A review of the design parameters for the site found that all the lagoons are of a sufficient area for the flow and BOD load. However, observations of the lagoons suggested that there may be significant hydraulic short-circuiting. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling was therefore carried out on one of the lagoons to establish the hydraulic regime. Two consecutive simulations were carried out, both with and without baffles; the first to establish steady flow conditions, and the second using a chemical species transport model to obtain the residence time distribution (RTD). The results of the modelling indicate that the lagoons do currently suffer from significant short-circuiting, and large dead-zones are present. The installation of baffles in the CFD model improved the plug-flow characteristics of the lagoons, substantially reducing the short-circuiting and the size of the dead-zones. It has therefore been concluded that the installation of baffles in the lagoons will lead to an improvement in their performance, by increasing the retention time of the system.

In this study, we developed a pipeline transport model to investigate the influence of particle sedimentation factors on slurry transportation through pipelines. The particle tracking module of the software was used to simulate the transport process, and the influences on the sedimentation rate were analyzed considering the slurry concentration, particle size, and flow velocity. The established model exhibited small calculation errors. In addition, the results revealed that the proposed model is reliable for calculating the degree of influence of various factors on particle sedimentation. The effect of the particle sedimentation rate on the pipeline slurry was explored considering the particle size, slurry concentration, and flow velocity. The sedimentation rate was positively related to particle size and adversely related to the slurry concentration and flow velocity. Indeed, study on the sedimentation rate requires considering a reasonable range of particle sizes, preparing a slurry with an appropriate concentration, and adjusting an appropriate flow velocity. Numerical simulations were performed using the filling data as the background for a sample mining area. The experimental results showed optimal slurry concentration and particle size of 60% and 25.25 µm, respectively.

The study presents the particle deposition and aggregation phenomena by introducing new parameter called Particle Deposition Number PDN, defined as the ratio of the particle instantaneous velocity to its capturing value. The particle capture or rebound fate will decide from knowing such number. The study employed new scheme of particle deposition in the sublayer region which includes balancing of four forces. Moreover, the bouncing model is also considered for particle fate decision. The study examines the variation of particle velocity at varying area tube and the critical velocity in which particle will tend to stick if its velocity is lower than the threshold limit. The results show that threshold velocity is exponentially decreased with the increment in the particle size. Capturing of particles is shown to be enhanced as the conduit converges due to increasing in the PDN. The analysis of the deposition also investigates the impact of the particle size on the PDN. At low flow velocity, the NDP has V-shaped trend as particle size increases. However, veering toward constant PDN value has occurred as the flow velocity augmented. Finally, small sized particles experience rebound due to the prevailing of the particle impact energy over the adhesion energy before impacting with the surface. The dissipation in the particle energy during impaction causes large sized particle to loose greater amount of energy compare to small sized one, resulting in domination of the adhesion part, which leads to deposition on the surface.

The human respiratory tract has a complex airflow pattern. If any obstruction is present in the airways, it will change the airflow pattern and deposit particles inside the airways. This is the concern of breath quality (inspired air), and it is decreasing due to the unplanned production of material goods. This is a primary cause of respiratory illness (asthma, cancer, etc.). Therefore, it is important to identify the flow characteristics in the human airways and airways with a glomus tumour with particle deposition. A numerical diagnosis is presented with an asymmetric unsteady-state light breathing condition (10 l/min). An in vitro human respiratory tract model has been reconstructed using computed tomography scan techniques and an artificial glomus tumour developed 2 cm above a carina on the posterior wall of the trachea. The transient flow characteristics are numerically simulated with a realizable (low Reynolds number) k–ɛ turbulence model. The flow disturbance is captured around the tumour, which influenced the upstream and downstream of the flow. The flow velocity pattern, wall shear stress and probable area of inflammation (hotspot) due to suspended particle deposition are determined, which may assist doctors more effectively in aerosol therapy and prosthetics of human airways illness.

Abstract Particulate deposits in aero-engine turbines change the profile of blades, increase the blade surface roughness and block internal cooling channels and film cooling holes, which generally leads to the degradation of aerodynamic and cooling performance. To reveal particle deposition effects in the turbine, unsteady simulations were performed by investigating the migration patterns and deposition characteristics of the particle contaminant in a one-stage, high-pressure turbine of an aero-engine. Two typical operating conditions of the aero-engine, i.e. high-temperature take-off and economic cruise, were discussed, and the effects of particle size on the migration and deposition of fly-ash particles were demonstrated. A critical velocity model was applied to predict particle deposition. Comparisons between the stator and rotor were made by presenting the concentration and trajectory of the particles and the resulting deposition patterns on the aerofoil surfaces. Results show that the migration and deposition of the particles in the stator passage is dominated by the flow characteristics of fluid and the property of particles. In the subsequential rotor passage, in addition to these factors, particles are also affected by the stator–rotor interaction and the interference between rotors. With higher inlet temperature and larger diameter of the particle, the quantity of deposits increases and the deposition is distributed mainly on the Pressure Side (PS) and the Leading Edge (LE) of the aerofoil.

The paper presents recommendations for using the results obtained in sediment transport simulation and modeling of channel deformations in rivers. This work relates to the issues of empirical modeling of the water flow characteristics in natural riverbeds with a movable bottom (alluvial channels) which are extremely complex. The study shows that in the simulation of sediment transport and calculation of channel deformations in the rivers, it is expedient to use the calculation dependences of Chézy’s coefficient for assessing the roughness of the bottom sediment mixture, or the dependences of the form based on the field investigation data. Three models are most commonly used and based on the original formulas of Meyer-Peter and Müller (1948), Einstein (1950) and van Rijn (1984). This work deals with assessing the hydraulic resistance of the channel and improving the river sediment transport model in a simulation of riverbed transformation on the basis of previous research to verify it based on 296 field measurements on the Central-East European lowland rivers. The performed test calculations show that the modified van Rijn formula gives the best results from all the considered variants.
