Information and robot technology (IRT) is drawing increasing attention in the technologizing and digitalizing of medical professional skills. In fields such as manufacturing, high-precision tasks, not possible with human, skills have been already realized by industrial robots. The medical field thus expected to advance with progress in the development of medical robots able to provide diagnosis and therapy that are much more precise than those of conventional medical professionals.

We have been studying the technologizing and digitalizing skills of the medical professionals in the medical diagnostics and therapeutics. The concept of technologizing and digitalizing medical skills involves extracting functions in medical professional skills and reconstructing and implementing these extracted functions in the mechanisms, controllers, and image-processing algorithms of the medical support system. In this paper, we focus on the kidney stone extraction skills of medical professionals by utilizing robot vision technology, and discuss a methodology for technologizing and digitalizing medical diagnostic and therapeutic skills for a non-invasive ultrasound theragnostic system.

At the end of the 20th century robot technology became well established as a reliable and economic source in industrial automation. On the other hand, it is claimed that even a general six or seven degree of freedom robot arm or a multifingered robot hand designed carefully and manufactured with very high precision lacks versatility in its use in a variety of tasks that must be done instead of a human. The lack of versatility or the clumsiness of present industrial robots is not due to the fine mechanism of such robots. Rather, the clumsiness shows a lack of our knowledge of everyday physics, in particular, a lack of knowledge of physics involving grasping and handling of various kinds of things and manipulating them with certain dexterity, in which tactile and vision sensings must be well coordinated.

AbstractWhile medical professionals are superbly trained in treating patients, they are not often trained in quality improvement principles. In this article, the authors present a framework for strategy assessment commonly used in the business sector to identify areas for improvement and measure the improvement of interventions. This framework can be adapted to the medical field and used to improve the delivery of health care at a systems level.

BACKGROUND Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely applied in the medical field, especially in ophthalmology. In the development of ophthalmic artificial intelligence, some problems worthy of attention have gradually emerged, among which the ophthalmic AI-related recognition issues are particularly prominent. That is to say, currently, there is a lack of research into people's familiarity with and their attitudes toward ophthalmic AI. OBJECTIVE This survey aims to assess medical workers’ and other professional technicians’ familiarity with AI, as well as their attitudes toward and concerns of ophthalmic AI. METHODS An electronic questionnaire was designed through the Questionnaire Star APP, an online survey software and questionnaire tool, and was sent to relevant professional workers through Wechat, China’s version of Facebook or WhatsApp. The participation was based on a voluntary and anonymous principle. The questionnaire mainly consisted of four parts, namely the participant’s background, the participant's basic understanding of AI, the participant's attitude toward AI, and the participant's concerns about AI. A total of 562 participants were counted, with 562 valid questionnaires returned. The results of the questionnaires are displayed in an Excel 2003 form. RESULTS A total of 562 professional workers completed the questionnaire, of whom 291 were medical workers and 271 were other professional technicians. About 37.9% of the participants understood AI, and 31.67% understood ophthalmic AI. The percentages of people who understood ophthalmic AI among medical workers and other professional technicians were about 42.61% and 15.6%, respectively. About 66.01% of the participants thought that ophthalmic AI would partly replace doctors, with about 59.07% still having a relatively high acceptance level of ophthalmic AI. Meanwhile, among those with ophthalmic AI application experiences (30.6%), respectively about 84.25% of medical professionals and 73.33% of other professional technicians held a full acceptance attitude toward ophthalmic AI. The participants expressed concerns that ophthalmic AI might bring about issues such as the unclear definition of medical responsibilities, the difficulty of ensuring service quality, and the medical ethics risks. And among the medical workers and other professional technicians who understood ophthalmic AI, 98.39%, and 95.24%, respectively, said that there was a need to increase the study of medical ethics issues in the ophthalmic AI field. CONCLUSIONS Analysis of the questionnaire results shows that the medical workers have a higher understanding level of ophthalmic AI than other professional technicians, making it necessary to popularize ophthalmic AI education among other professional technicians. Most of the participants did not have any experience in ophthalmic AI, but generally had a relatively high acceptance level of ophthalmic AI, believing that doctors would partly be replaced by it and that there was a need to strengthen research into medical ethics issues of the field.

High-precision reducer is the core component of industrial robots. In order to achieve the comprehensive performance testing of precision reducers, an instrument with a vertical layout and a cylindrical structure is designed. As a rotating machine, the inevitable coupling misalignment of the instrument can lead to vibration faults which lead to errors in the test. So it is pretty necessary to diagnose and monitor the coupling misalignment while the instrument is working. The causes of the coupling misaligned fault of the instrument and the relationship between the misalignment fault and torque ripple are analyzed in this paper. A method of using the torque transducer in the measurement chain of the instrument to diagnose the coupling misalignment is proposed in this paper. Many experiments have been done to test the capability of detecting the coupling misalignment using this method. Experimental results show that the amplitude of torque ripple of the shaft is linearly related to the coupling misalignment and is quadratically related to the rotation speed of the shaft when the misalignment exists in the shaft. The combination of components at the rotation frequency (fr) and the additional components can be used to diagnose faults due to coupling misalignment.

Lately lawyers and medical professionals pay more attention too the process of minor patient healthcare. The research shall address the issues of legal relationship between minor patients and medical professionals, consent to treatment of minor patients and communication problems including the scope of information which the doctor can provide to the minor patient’s relatives to protect themselves and patients. Legislation prescribes that the information provided by the medical professional to the minor patient must be not only easy-to-understand, but also be consistent with the patient’s age maturity. However, in Latvia, for example, there are no guidelines that specify how medical professionals can determine the patient’s maturity. In the course of provision of medical services to the minor persons legal disputes involving communiucation failures between the minor patients, their relatives, legal representatives and the doctors arise increasingly frequently. The research will look into issue of communication problems in healthcare. The aim of the research is to provide insight into challenges of legal relations betweem minor patients and medical professionals and communication problems in healthcare.

Overall, each chapter of this book aims to challenge the reader to engage in a process of self-reflection using the framework of the Gibb’s reflective cycle and provides health professionals of all levels with practical tools and techniques that will allow them to become more competent caregivers and leaders in their field. Indeed, the ultimate goal of the book is to encourage a medical educational framework supporting personal and professional transformation that may lead to more resilient and happier physicians. Thus, physicians may be better equipped to attend to the tasks of patient care that incorporate attention to healing, caring, and, compassion, while upholding their duty to serve the patient and society.


The purpose of this chapter is to explore why juggling all the different and demanding roles of a medical professional is by no means an easy task. Perhaps the biggest challenge for doctors is time management and multitasking. Much of this is part and parcel of an ordinary doctor's life, but due to the peculiar nature and complex paradigms of modern health care services, special emphasis must be put on empowering fledgling medical professionals with such managerial skills. Resident medical physicians and surgeons should at least be aware of the countless opportunities available as well as how to get the best out of them.

COVID-19 has challenged all medical professionals to optimise non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIV) as a means of limiting intubation. We present a case of a middle-aged man with a voluminous beard for religious reasons who developed progressive hypoxic respiratory failure secondary to COVID-19 infection which became refractory to NIV. After gaining permission to trim the patient’s facial hair by engaging with the patient, his family and religious leaders, his mask fit objectively improved, his hypoxaemia markedly improved and an unnecessary intubation was avoided. Trimming of facial hair should be considered in all patients on NIV who might have any limitations with mask fit and seal that would hamper ventilation, including patients who have facial hair for religious reasons.
