On the Prediction of Hydrodynamic Forces Acting on a Ship Moving at Constant Drift

The effect of drift angle on a ship is investigated through towing tank tests and using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Resistance and wave elevations obtained from the computational study are validated with experimental results. Detailed free surface, mean velocity and pressure flow fields on the hull surface are obtained from the computational study for Fn ranging from 0.16 to 0.22 and for drift angle β = 0, 5 and 10°. The lateral force, yaw moment and asymmetric flow characteristics are brought out in the computational study.

An unconventional melt blowing die was analyzed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This die has an annular configuration wherein the jet inlet is tapered (the cross-sectional area decreases) as the air approaches the die face. It was found that the flow characteristics of this die are different from conventional slot and annular dies. In particular, for the tapered die the near-field normalized turbulent kinetic energy was found to be lower at shallow die angles. Also, it was found that the peak mean velocity behavior was intermediate between that of conventional annular and slot dies. The centerline turbulence profiles were found to be qualitatively similar to those of annular dies; quantitatively, higher values were present for tapered dies.

ABSTRACT Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of a leakage in a pressurized pipe were undertaken to determine the empirical effects of hydraulic and geometric factors on the leakage flow rate. The results showed that pressure, leakage area and leakage form, influenced the leakage flow rate significantly, while pipe thickness and mean velocity did not influence the leakage flow rate. With relation to the interactions, the effect of pressure upon leakage flow rate depends on leakage area, being stronger for great leakage areas; the effects of leakage area and pressure on leakage flow rate is more pronounced for longitudinal leakages than for circular leakages. Finally, our results suggest that the equations that predict leakage flow rate in pressurized pipes may need a revision.

A recently developed academic computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, named Galatea, is used for the computational study of fully turbulent flow over the NASA common research model (CRM) in a wing-body configuration with and without horizontal tail. A brief description of code's methodology is included, while attention is mainly directed toward the accurate and efficient prediction of pressure distribution on wings' surfaces as well as of computation of lift and drag forces against different angles of attack, using an h-refinement approach and a parallel agglomeration multigrid scheme. The obtained numerical results compare close with both the experimental wind tunnel data and those of reference solvers.

A commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software package is used to investigate numerically a 3-dimensional rectangular-box room with rounded edges. The room has all its window openings located on one wall only. The standard K-ε turbulence model is used. Air’s flow rate and flow pattern are considered in terms of wind speed and the openings’ characteristics, such as their number, location, size and shape. Especially, comparison with ventilation rate corresponding to when the room edges are sharp is made; and thereby the effects of the edges being rounded are examined.

Modern “high tech” lubricant oils have been developed to contain a high level of dispersant additive to the base oil. As contaminant loading has increased, designers are required to address the problem of controlling the contamination found in the oil. One method is the use of bypass centrifugal sedimentation. This paper describes a computational study of the basic flow characteristics in a centrifugal sedimenting rotor using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package STAR-CD. Simplified CFD models have indicated regions of flow which would be difficult to demonstrate by experimental methods alone. For example, backflow from the outlet channel is found to cause a disruptive secondary flow in some models, but this flow is contained by the inclusion of a more realistic geometry. Two–phase flow computations have also been carried out to investigate the behaviour of spherical particulates of different sizes. Flow and geometry factors affecting the centrifuge performance are discussed.

There has been a lot of interest in trim optimisation to reduce fuel consumption and emissions of ships. Many existing ships are designed for a single operational condition with the aim of producing low resistance at their design speed and draft with an even keel. Given that a ship will often sail outside this condition over its operational life and moreover some vessels such as LNG carriers return in ballast condition in one leg, the effect of trim on ships resistance will be significant. Ship trim optimization analysis has traditionally been done through towing tank testing. Computational techniques have become increasingly popular for design and optimization applications in all engineering disciplines. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), is the fastest developing area in marine fluid dynamics as an alternative to model tests. High fidelity CFD methods are capable of modelling breaking waves which is especially crucial for trim optimisation studies where the bulbous bow partially emerges or the transom stern partially immerses. This paper presents a trim optimization study on the Kriso Container Ship (KCS) using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in conjunction with towing tank tests. A series of resistance tests for various trim angles and speeds were conducted at 1:75 scale at design draft. CFD computations were carried out for the same conditions with the hull both fixed and free to sink and trim. Dynamic sinkage and trim add to the computational cost and thus slow the optimisation process. The results obtained from CFD simulations were in good agreement with the experiments. After validating the applicability of the computational model, the same mesh, boundary conditions and solution techniques were used to obtain resistance values for different trim conditions at different Froude numbers. Both the fixed and free trim/sinkage models could predict the trend of resistance with variation of trim angles; however the fixed model failed to measure the absolute values as accurately as the free model. It was concluded that a fixed CFD model, although computationally faster and cheaper, can find the optimum trim angle but cannot predict the amount of savings with very high accuracy. Results concerning the performance of the vessel at different speeds and trim angles were analysed and optimum trim is suggested.

Most Malaysian rural houses are categorized as non-engineered buildings and vulnerable to damage during events such as windstorms due to the fact that these houses lack engineering considerations. These houses are characterized by having an attached kitchen house, and many of these houses were previously damaged by thunderstorms. The current research investigated the air flow characteristics changes surrounding these houses as a result of the presence of the kitchen. The roof pitch, position, gap height, and overhang were investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results showed that the kitchen position at the center resulted in a slight increase in the suction on the ridge of the roof; however, it significantly altered the flow pattern in the windward and leeward directions. The results also showed that the roof overhang, roof pitch, and kitchen position contributed severely to the damage of the rural house. Moreover, the highest suction occurred at the roof ridge when the kitchen was located at the center of the rural house (Cp = −2.28). Therefore, the authors believe that it is more advantageous to have a kitchen connected to the core as it reduces the pressure on the roof of the core during thunderstorm events.

The flow characteristics in mini/micro sonic nozzles have been studied in this paper using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The result shows that the flow rate of the parallel combined nozzles is not equal to but smaller than that of the sum of the nozzles. The reason is the each effect of the air after nozzles, which changes the flow field parameters .The more number of the parallel combined nozzles, the bigger error exits between actual flow rate and that of the sum of the nozzles. The result is consistent to the experiment. The study also shows the smaller of the nozzle’s diameter, the bigger error exits.
