Benchmark Case Study of Scale Effect in Self-Propelled Container Ship Squat

Abstract A URANS CFD-based study has been undertaken to investigate scale effect in container ship squat. Initially, CFD studies were carried out for the model scale benchmarking squat cases of a self-propelled DTC container ship. In this study, a quasi-static modelling approach was adopted where the hull was fixed from sinking and trimming which is computationally more efficient than dynamic mesh methods that models actual motion directly. Instead, the quasi-static approach allows estimation of the squat base on the recorded hydrodynamic forces and moments. Propulsion of the vessel was modelled by the body-force actuator disc method. Upon successful verification and validation of the model scale self-propelled CFD model against benchmark data, full scale investigations were then undertaken. Validation of the full scale set-up was demonstrated by computing the full scale bare hull resistance in deep, laterally unrestricted water and comparing against the extrapolated resistance of model scale benchmark resistance data. Upon validating the setup, it was used to predict full scale ship squat in confined waters. The credibility of the full scale confined water model was checked by comparing vessel resistance in confined water against the Landweber empirical prediction. To quantify scale effect in ship squat predicitons, the benchmarking squat cases were computed by adopting the validated full scale CFD model with body-force propulsion. Comparison between the full scale CFD, model scale CFD and model scale benchmark EFD squat results demonstrates that scale effect is negligible.

Accurate prediction of the self-propulsion performance is one of the most important factors for the energy-efficient design of a ship. In general, the hydrodynamic performance of a full-scale ship could be achieved by model-scale simulation or towing tank tests with extrapolations. With the development of CFD methods and computing power, directly predict ship performance with full-scale CFD is an important approach. In this article, a numerical study on the full-scale self-propulsion performance with propeller operating behind ship at model- and full-scale is presented. The study includes numerical simulations using the RANS method with a double-model and VOF (Volume-of-Fluid) model respectively and scale effect analysis based on overall performance, local flow fields and detailed vortex identification. The verification study on grid convergence is also performed for full-scale simulation with global and local mesh refinements. A series of sea trail tests were performed to collect reliable data for the validation of CFD predictions. The analysis of scale effect on hull-propeller interaction shows that the difference of hull boundary layer and flow separation is the main source of scale effect on ship wake. The results of the fluctuations of propeller thrust and torque along with circulation distribution and local flow field show that the propeller’s loading is significantly higher for model-scale ship. It is suggested that the difference of vortex evolution and interaction is more pronounced and has larger effects on the ship’s powering performance at model-scale than full-scale according to the simulation results. From the study on self-propulsion prediction, it could be concluded that the simplification on free surface treatment does not only affect the wave-making resistance for bare hull but also the propeller performance and propeller induced ship resistance which can be produced up to 5% uncertainty to the power prediction. Roughness is another important factor in full-scale simulation because it has up to an approximately 7% effect on the delivery power. As a result of the validation study, the numerical simulations of full-scale ship self-propulsion shows good agreement with the sea trail data especially for cases that have considered both roughness and free surface effects. This result will largely enhance our confidence to apply full-scale simulation in the prediction of ship’s self-propulsion performance in the future ship designs.

This paper presents an investigation on the scale effects associated with the powering performance of a Gate Rudder System (GRS) which was recently introduced as a novel energy-saving propulsion and maneuvring device. This new system was applied for the first time on a 2400 GT domestic container ship, and full-scale sea trials were conducted successfully in Japan, in 2017. The trials confirmed the superior powering and maneuvring performance of this novel system. However, a significant discrepancy was also noticed between the model test-based performance predictions and the full-scale measurements. The discrepancy was in the power-speed data and also in the maneuvring test data when these data were compared with the data of her sister container ship which was equipped with a conventional flap rudder. Twelve months after the delivery of the vessel with the gate rudder system, the voyage data revealed a surprisingly more significant difference in the powering performance based on the voyage data. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to take a further step towards an improved estimation of the powering performance of ships with a GRS with a specific emphasis on the scale effect issues associated with a GRS. More specifically, this study investigated the scale effects on the powering performance of a gate rudder system based on the analyses of the data from two tank tests and full-scale trials with the above-mentioned sister ships. The study focused on the corrections for the scale effects, which were believed to be associated with the drag and lift characteristics of the gate rudder blades due to the low Reynolds number experienced in model tests combined with the unique arrangement of this rudder and propulsion system. Based on the appropriate semi-empirical approaches that support model test and full-scale data, this study verified the scale effect phenomenon and presented the associated correction procedure. Also, this study presented an enhanced methodology for the powering performance prediction of a ship driven by a GRS implementing the proposed scale effect correction. The predicted powering performance of the subject container vessel with the GRS presented an excellent agreement with the full-scale trials data justifying the claimed scale effect and associated correction procedure, as well as the proposed enhanced methodology for the practical way of predicting the powering performance of a ship with the GRS.

A new method is presented for obtaining full-scale resistance predictions from model-scale submarine resistance tests. Traditionally, model-scale submarine resistance data is scaled using Froude’s Hypothesis, where the resistance is decomposed into frictional resistance and residual resistance. The frictional resistance is computed from a flat plate friction line formula at both model- and full-scale. The residual resistance coefficient is measured model-scale and is assumed to be independent of Reynolds number. Since the flow is assumed to be turbulent at fullscale, turbulence stimulators are placed at about 5% x/L to trip the flow in the model tests. The parasitic drag from the turbulence stimulators must be measured and subtracted from the model-scale resistance. In the new approach a momentum thickness simulator is used in place of a traditional turbulence stimulator. The purpose of the momentum thickness simulator is to achieve similarity for model-scale and full-scale normalized momentum thickness of the boundary layer at the stern of the vessel as momentum thickness is directly related to ship resistance. The size and location of the momentum thickness simulator is computed to assure the flow is turbulent downstream of the simulator and to produce similar momentum thickness on the body downstream of the simulator. With this approach the total resistance is scaled from model-scale to full-scale without decomposing the resistance into frictional resistance and residual resistance. The parasitic drag is not measured and subtracted, as the additional drag from the momentum simulator is computed to produce the correctly scaled momentum thickness. In the new approach the physics associated with resistance is more clearly expressed and improved accuracy of resistance predictions is expected.

In this paper, a commercial CFD code, ANSYS-Fluent has been used to investigate the effect of mesh number generated in the computed domain on the CFD aerodynamic performances of a container ship. A full-scale model of the 1200TEU container ship has been chosen as a reference model in the computation. Five different mesh numbers for the same dimension domain have been used and the CFD aerodynamic performances of the above water surface hull of the ship have been shown. The obtained CFD results show a remarkable effect of mesh number on aerodynamic performances of the ship and the mesh convergence has been found. The study is an evidence to prove that the mesh number has affected the CFD results in general and the accuracy of the CFD aerodynamic performances in particular.

In this work computational models were developed and used to investigate applications of vortex generators (VGs) to turbomachinery. The work was aimed at increasing the efficiency of compressor components designed for the NASA Ultra Efficient Engine Technology (UEET) program. Initial calculations were used to investigate the physical behavior of VGs. A parametric study of the effects of VG height was done using 3-D calculations of isolated VGs. A body force model was developed to simulate the effects of VGs without requiring complicated grids. The model was calibrated using 2-D calculations of the VG vanes and was validated using the 3-D results. Then three applications of VGs to a compressor rotor and stator were investigated: 1. The results of the 3-D calculations were used to simulate the use of small casing VGs used to generate rotor preswirl or counterswirl. Computed performance maps were used to evaluate the effects of VGs. 2. The body force model was used to simulate large partspan splitters on the casing ahead of the stator. Computed loss buckets showed the effects of the VGs. 3. The body force model was also used to investigate the use of tiny VGs on the stator suction surface for controlling secondary flows. Near-surface particle traces and exit loss profiles were used to evaluate the effects of the VGs.

Abstract The analysis of shells is an important subdivision of the general theory of elasticity, and its application is useful in the solution of engineering problems involving thin-walled structures. A common type of shell is one which possesses symmetry with respect to an axis of revolution. A theory for such shells has been developed by various investigators (1, 2, 3, 6) and applied to a few simple cases such as the cylindrical, spherical, and conical shapes. Boundary conditions, for the most part, have been simple static ones, and conditions of surface loading have been included in certain special cases. This paper extends the theory of axially symmetrical shells by including the body force of rotation about the axis and applies the results to the rotating conical shell. The analysis follows a pattern established by several investigators (1, 2, 3, 6) and for this reason is abbreviated to a considerable extent. Only where the inclusion of the body force makes elucidation advisable or where a slightly different method of approach is used are the steps presented in more detail.

A new method for modeling hot underexpanded exhaust plumes with cold model scale plumes in aerodynamic wind tunnel testing has been developed. The method is applicable to aeropropulsion testing where significant interaction between the exhaust and the free stream and aftbody may be present. The technique scales the model and nozzle external geometry, including the nozzle exit area, matches the model jet to free-stream dynamic pressure ratio to full-scale jet to free-stream dynamic pressure ratio, and matches the model thrust coefficient to full-scale thrust coefficient. The technique does not require scaling of the internal nozzle geometry. A generalized method of characteristic computer code was used to predict the plume shapes of a hot (γ = 1.2) half-scale nozzle of area ratio 3.2 and of a cold (γ = 1.4) model scale nozzle of area ratio 1.3, whose pressure ratio and area ratio were selected to satisfy the above criteria and other testing requirements. The plume shapes showed good agreement. Code validity was checked by comparing code results for cold air exhausting into a quiescent atmosphere to pilot surveys and shadowgraphs of model nozzle plumes taken in a static facility.

Floating wind turbine systems will play an important role for a sustainable energy supply in the future. The dynamic behavior of such systems is governed by strong couplings of aerodynamic, structural mechanic and hydrodynamic effects. To examine these effects scaled tank tests are an inevitable part of the design process of floating wind turbine systems. Normally Froude scaling is used in tank tests. However, using Froude scaling also for the wind turbine rotor will lead to wrong aerodynamic loads compared to the full-scale turbine. Therefore the paper provides a detailed description of designing a modified scaled rotor blade mitigating this problem. Thereby a focus is set on preserving the tip speed ratio of the full scale turbine, keeping the thrust force behavior of the full scale rotor also in model scale and additionally maintaining the power coefficient between full scale and model scale. This is achieved by completely redesigning the original blade using a different airfoil. All steps of this redesign process are explained using the example of the generic DOWEC 6MW wind turbine. Calculations of aerodynamic coefficients are done with the software tools XFoil and AirfoilPrep and the resulting thrust and power coefficients are obtained by running several simulations with the software AeroDyn.

With the rise of ultra high bypass ratio turbofan and shorter and slimmer inlet geometries compared to classical architectures, designers face new challenges as nacelle and fan design cannot anymore be addressed independently. This paper reviews CFD methods developed to simulate inlet-fan interactions and suitable for industrial design cycles. In addition to the reference isolated fan and nacelle models, the methodologies evaluated in this study consist of two fan modeling approaches, an actuator disc and body-force source terms. The configuration is a modern turbofan with a high bypass ratio under cross-wind. Results are compared to experimental data. As to be predicted, the body-force modeling approach enables early inlet reattachment. In addition, it provides a representative flow deviation across the fan zone which enables performance and stability assessments.
