Associations Between Parents’ and 12-Year-Old Children’s Sport and Vigorous Activity: The Role of Self-Esteem and Athletic Competence

Background:The aims of this study were to investigate parent–child physical activity (PA) associations and whether children’s self-esteem or athletic competence mediates such associations.Methods:The study population comprised 1124 12-year-old children and their parents. Parents’ PA was assessed using the Baecke questionnaire and a question about sport participation. Children’s PA was assessed by questions about participation in sport and vigorous activities. The children’s self-esteem and athletic competence were assessed by Harter’s Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents.Results:Parents’ PA was strongly associated with their children’s PA. With 2 active parents, the odds ratio for their children to participate in sport was 3.9 (95% CI = 2.2–6.9, girls) and 8.8 (95% CI = 4.3–18.0, boys) compared with having inactive parents. Athletic competence partly mediated these associations.Conclusions:The family is an important target for interventions to increase PA among children, and it might be important to consider ways to reinforce children’s athletic competence.

In Slovenia, the role of general practitioners in counselling physical activity for prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is well recognized. The role of general practitioners in advising healthy lifestyle for individuals who are at risk of developing CVD is formally defined in the National Program for Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, which has been running since 2001. Part of the program is counselling on healthy lifestyle including physical activity, performed in all health centres across the country. First a screening and medical examination is performed. In case of higher risk for CVD (>20%) the physician should give advice on the particular risk factor and direct patients to health-education centres, where they can participate in healthy lifestyle workshops lead by health professionals. Physicians and other health professionals who are involved in the implementation of prevention activities within the program need knowledge and skills that are crucial for successful counselling on healthy lifestyle. The educational program “basic education in health promotion and prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases in primary health care/family medicine” consists of two parts. The first part of the training is open to all health professionals working within the program. The second part is intended for health professionals working in health-education workshops. In the last few years a new family practice model has been introduced and disseminated. Some duties of the family physician, including health promotion and counselling, are being transferred to graduate nurses who become part of the family practice team. This new division of work undoubtedly brings many advantages, both in terms of the work organization, and of high-quality patient care. Nevertheless preventive action cannot be fully passed on to graduate nurses. Careful planning and education are needed to ensure a comprehensive approach in healthy life style counselling.

Mental health and well-being in adolescence are associated with many short- and long-term outcomes. The evidence suggests that greenspace may play a role in adolescents' mental well-being, but we do not know much about the specifics of this link. In this paper, we investigated the role of other factors in the association. In a cross-sectional study, we investigated the role of neighbourhood greenspace in emotional and behavioural outcomes in 11-year-old urban adolescents participating in the UK Millennium Cohort Study (n = 4,534). We used linear regression models to test for an association of greenspace with self-esteem, happiness, positive mood, negative mood, and antisocial behaviour. We also investigated effect modification/moderation by garden access, physical activity, and perceived area safety. We did not find a main effect of greenspace, but we did find interaction effects. First, in adolescents without a garden, higher levels of greenspace were associated with lower levels of self-esteem and positive mood. Second, in adolescents who reported lower levels of physical activity, higher levels of greenspace were associated with lower levels of negative mood. Third, in adolescents who perceived their areas to be unsafe, higher levels of greenspace were associated with higher levels of antisocial behaviour. Our findings suggest that merely more greenspace in the neighbourhood may not be sufficient to promote the mental well-being of urban adolescents in the UK. However, greenspace does seem to have an influence under certain conditions which should be investigated further in future studies.

BackgroundSedentary behaviour can be associated with poor mental health, but it remains unclear whether all types of sedentary behaviour have equivalent detrimental effects.AimsTo model the potential impact on depression of replacing passive with mentally active sedentary behaviours and with light and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. An additional aim was to explore these relationships by self-report data and clinician diagnoses of depression.MethodIn 1997, 43 863 Swedish adults were initially surveyed and their responses linked to patient registers until 2010. The isotemporal substitution method was used to model the potential impact on depression of replacing 30 min of passive sedentary behaviour with equivalent durations of mentally active sedentary behaviour, light physical activity or moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Outcomes were self-reported depression symptoms (cross-sectional analyses) and clinician-diagnosed incident major depressive disorder (MDD) (prospective analyses).ResultsOf 24 060 participants with complete data (mean age 49.2 years, s.d. 15.8, 66% female), 1526 (6.3%) reported depression symptoms at baseline. There were 416 (1.7%) incident cases of MDD during the 13-year follow-up. Modelled cross-sectionally, replacing 30 min/day of passive sedentary behaviour with 30 min/day of mentally active sedentary behaviour, light physical activity and moderate-to-vigorous activity reduced the odds of depression symptoms by 5% (odds ratio 0.95, 95% CI 0.94–0.97), 13% (odds ratio 0.87, 95% CI 0.76–1.00) and 19% (odds ratio 0.81, 95% CI 0.93–0.90), respectively. Modelled prospectively, substituting 30 min/day of passive with 30 min/day of mentally active sedentary behaviour reduced MDD risk by 5% (hazard ratio 0.95, 95% CI 0.91–0.99); no other prospective associations were statistically significant.ConclusionsSubstituting passive with mentally active sedentary behaviours, light activity or moderate-to-vigorous activity may reduce depression risk in adults.

Drawing from Bourdieu, this study investigated the multifaceted influences that operate in and through combinations of family and social class with regard to the embodiment of physical activity in young adolescents in the UK. The findings suggest that pedagogical practices within the family environment are crucial to the development of embodied dispositions toward physical activity and health. The results illustrate that the family operates as a “pedagogical” field where personal histories and prevailing social circumstances exert a strong influence on children’s embodied physicalities.

The objective of study was examining impacts of peers’ pressure, and the variable of self-esteem on levels of aggression at general secondary students, males and females. Aggression is known as any type of behavior meant to hurt others. Aggression always merges in the context of dealing among individuals (such as emotional and social difficulties, fewness of self-esteem, peers-discarding, and studying failure), environing character is tice (such as poverty, weakness of family supervisors, limited social support, and conflicts with the family) limiting factors that cause aggression are considered a vital matter to specify precautions of it. This qualitative rational research aims at examining impacts of variables of peers’ pressure, and self-esteem on prediction with levels of aggression at general secondary students. The sample of study consisted of 411 male and female students and they have been randomly chosen from 720 students and the general secondary students in Jerash governorate. The participants answered the questionnaire of aggression and scale of peers’-pressure, and scale of self-esteem in their classes during periods of research. Date had been analyzed by using hierarchy method analysis of using hierarchy method analyzing the multi-declension. It was pin-pointed that peers’ pressure was an effective predictor in explaining levels of aggression relative to hierarchy of analyzing the multi-declension of the general secondary students, males and females. Moreover, it was pin-pointed that self-esteem was in the second rank from part of the relationship with aggression amongst the general secondary students, males and females. It was clear that peers’ pressure had an impact indicative to the general secondary students’ aggression in the deeds connected with prevention of aggression, and it is necessary to teach the general secondary students how to adapt with pressure, and how to say “no”. Leaning on these results, we recommend that schools to students how to prevent violence and aggression. In addition to that, we recommend to use cognitive behavioural technicalities to raise the level of the general secondary students’ awareness with non-beneficial behaviour and motivating to aggression so that they can amend such behaviour.

Abstract. Employment development as integral part of national development based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution, is held in order development human completely and development the entire Indonesian community for improve dignity, respect and self-esteem of workers and manifest the society whose prosperous, fair, affluent physically and spiritually. Given the importance of the role of laborers in development, especially in the production process, it is naturally that protection, maintenance and development for the welfare of laborers, especially women laborers, should be carried out. Because the laborer position is very weak in compare with the bussinesmen. The position of weak laborer requires the bussiness men to give away social protection guarantee to their laborers. Social guarantee is the right of entire citizen including permanent foreigners. Violations of the implementation of social guarantee means violations of human rights (HAM). This is in line with the mandate of the 1945 Constitution that has been amended namely article 28 letters d (1 and 2),  letter h (3), and article 34 (2); state that the country protects every citizens and entitled on protection from all kinds of danger, intimidation and equal treatment in carrying out their life. In fact, not all companies giving socal guarantee for their laborers, especially women laborers. In which many women laborers are still catagorized as single even though they are the backbone of the family,—because of having unemployed husband or as single parent. Thus, real action in form of advocacy is needed to change the company’s policies. Advocacy is a powerful way to bring positive changes and empower people in their lives.Abstrak. Pembangunan ketenagakerjaan sebagai bagian integral dari pembangunan nasional berdasarkan Pancasila dan Undang-undang dasar 1945, dilaksanakan dalam rangka pembangunan manusia seutuhnya dan pembangunan masyarakat Indonesia seluruhnya untuk meningkatkan harkat, martabat dan harga diri tenaga kerja serta mewujudkan masyarakat sejahtera, adil, makmur dan materiil maupun spriritual. Mengingat pentingnya peranan buruh dalam pembangunan khususnya dalam proses produksi, sudah sewajarnya dilakukan perlindungan, pemeliharaan dan pengembangan terhadap kesejahteraan buruh khususnya buruh perempuan, karena posisi buruh yang sangat lemah jika dibandingkan dengan posisi pengusaha. Posisi buruh yang lemah mengharuskan pengusaha untuk memberikan perlindungan jaminan sosial terhadap para pekerjanya. Jaminan sosial merupakan hak setiap warga negara bahkan termasuk warga negara asing yang menetap. Pelanggaran terhadap pelaksanaan jaminan sosial berarti pelanggaran terhadap hak asasi manusia (HAM). Hal ini sejalan dengan amanat UUD 45 yang telah diamandemen yaitu pasal 28 huruf d (1 dan 2) dan huruf h (3) juga pasal 34 (2); pasal-pasal tersebut menjelaskan bahwa negara melindungi setiap warganya dan berhak atas perlindungan dari segala macam bahaya, intimidasi dan perlakukan yang sama dalam menjalankan hidupnya. Dalam pelaksanaan dilapangan, tidak semua perusahaan melaksanakan jaminan sosial bagi para buruhnya, terutama buruh perempuan. Dimana banyak buruh perempuan yang masih dikategorikan lajang padahal mereka adalah tulang punggung keluarga, baik karena suami yang tidak bekerja maupun sebagai single parent. Sehingga dibutuhkan tindakan nyata dalam bentuk advokasi untuk merubah kebijakan perusahaan tersebut. Advokasi adalah cara ampuh untuk membawa perubahan positif dan memberdayakan orang dalam kehidupan mereka.
