Using the model of domain learning as a theoretical framework, the study was designed to examine the extent to which learners’ initial learning profiles based on previously acquired knowledge, learning strategy application, and interest-based motivation were distinctive in learning softball. Participants were 177 sixth-graders from three middle schools. A hierarchical cluster analysis was conducted to determine what kinds of learning profiles would result from the interactions among prior knowledge, learning strategies, and interest. The results revealed that individual learners could be classified into subgroups with distinctive learning characteristics. It is supported that learning in physical education is a progressive process that involves both cognitive and affective dimensions. An effective physical education curriculum should address both knowledge and skill acquisition and motivation simultaneously.

Abstract At this time of rapid change in society, what kind of educational role must the physical education curriculum and sports instruction play? As a matter of course, the teacher assesses the ability of the students as a specialized leader of sports and must stretch it out to achieve competitive success. However, if the teacher enthuses about victory in excess, the corporal punishment that can be called violence might be caused (15). In this case, the teacher doesn’t recognize the underlying principle that physical education and sports instruction is vital to the development of rounded human beings as future citizens. Sadly the consciousness of this principle by some educators is missing. For this reason, a return to a basic standpoint of education is proposed, where the physical education class is a core subject of school education. This study proposes further enhancement and development of the physical education curriculum from a viewpoint of pedagogy. In the first half of this study, the definition and meaning of the phrase “fair play” was analyzed in terms of education, and how this phrase was used and meaning it has in Japan was assessed. The key findings were that the phrase “fair play” came to be used gradually in society but the spread of the concept didn’t reach the physical education curriculum. Educationalists seem to have regarded fair play as learning of “knowledge and attitude”, but the process of “thinking” isn’t included in this interpretation. At the same time, it has been understood by some that the real value of the concept of fair play is where the sports practice unit and the physical education theory unit are linked to influence attitudes and social and life skills not only in school life but also the future lives of students as rounded citizens. The concept of fair play which encapsulates such educational value, as essential to human development (formation of character) as a basic principle of all of education, is therefore considered to be one of the major and essential roles of physical education teaching in modern society. The inclusion of the concept of “fair play” in the physica education curriculum will ensure that the learning outcomes seek to develop the long term health and well being of students as future good citizens. This will mean the previous limited focus on improving physical fitness, sports skill acquisition, and competition will be built on thereby equipping students better for their time in school and in future social life.

The effectiveness of learning strategies, e.g., the Five-step Approach, has been examined extensively under well-controlled laboratory conditions in the motor learning and physical education literature. This study examined the application of the Five-step Approach as an instructional technique in field settings. Two experiments were conducted in which a similar strategy was used in school settings. In Exp. 1, 40 third-grade children were randomly assigned to two groups, one to whom the Five-step Approach was explained (readying, imaging, focusing-attention, executing and evaluating), and a Control (Nonstrategy). Both then performed an activity similar to bowling. In Exp. 2, 33 seventh-grade children were assigned to the same learning conditions but performed a team-handball throwing task. Accuracy of performance was measured as a dependent variable in both experiments. Analysis of variance with repeated measures on the second factor indicated high values of accuracy for the Five-step Approach group in Exps. 1 and 2 compared with the Nonstrategy group. It was concluded that the Five-step Approach can enhance performance on motor tasks not only in laboratory settings but also in real-world environments such as physical education classes. Physical educators might consider the use of task-pertinent learning strategies during their practical work.

Background. This study aims to develop and implement a curriculum of non-formal physical education in school and assess its effectiveness for the physical development of 11−13-year-old children. Methods. The research was conducted in two stages. In the first stage 51 fifth grade children (M age = 11.3 years) participated in a quasi-experiment for two years. The children were organized into two groups: E and C. Both groups shared the duration (1 hour) and frequency (twice a week) but were different in their education curriculum. In the second stage (after four years) 72 sixth graders (M age = 13.0) participated from the same comprehensive schools. The focus groups underwent anthropometric (height, weight, BMI) and physiometric (VC, right and left handgrip strength) measurements. Dependent t test indicated that over two years E and C group girls’ and boys’ height, weight, right and left handgrip strength indices increased significantly, p < .05. Results. E group girls’ and boys’ BMI and C group girls’ VC indices did not change significantly, p > .05. Independent t test indicated that in the second research stage differences in anthropometric and physiometric measurements of groups were not significant, p > .05. Conclusion. The developed and implemented curriculum of non-formal education in the schools had the biggest positive effect on the decrease of 11−13-year-old children’s levels of BMI and the increase in the VC levels.
