The purpose of this study was to examine the development of six leader-athletes. In-depth qualitative interviews were used to explore the various activities that leader athletes engaged in from an early age as well as the roles and influences that peers, coaches, and parents played within these activities. Results indicated that leadership development in sport focused on developing four central components: high skill, strong work ethic, enriched cognitive sport knowledge, and good rapport with people. The types of activities engaged in throughout development as well as receiving feedback, acknowledgement, support, cognitive engagement, mature conversations with adults, and physical encounters with older peers are important social influences that can play an instrumental role in the formation of these four central tenets.

IntroductionLeadership, and the role of a Chief Executive in healthcare organisations, has never been more important. This review provides one of the first retrospective cross-sectional analyses of the developmental journeys of chief executives within the National Health Service (NHS).MethodsTwenty-eight semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with medical, clinical and non-clinical NHS chief executives from the Health Service Journal’s list of ‘Top Chief Executives’ 2014–2018. Through a thematic analysis of their narratives, lessons for the development of aspiring NHS chief executives emerge.ResultsFew proactively sought leadership opportunities and there was a lack of an active leadership development strategy. Yet the ‘seeds of leadership development’ took root early. Combined with a blended approach of formal leadership development and ‘on-the-job’ informal leadership development, emerging NHS chief executives were exposed to multiple ‘crucible moments’ that helped them develop into and excel at the top of their field.DiscussionTop NHS chief executives possess inherent values and a strong sense of social responsibility that underpin their developmental journeys, guide their behaviour, and strengthen their resilience. Capable, high quality leaders are needed from all professional backgrounds to support high quality care and much more needs to be done, particularly for medical and clinical professionals but for non-clinicians too, to maximise leadership potential within the NHS and develop a pipeline of aspiring NHS chief executives.

The Problem In Malaysia, women entrepreneurs are underrepresented, and little is known about their development of self-leadership. Official statistics indicate that approximately half of the businesses run by women remain underperforming. This shows that women entrepreneurs’ self-leadership is an issue that should be addressed. The Solution This study aims to explore self-leadership development of Malaysian women entrepreneurs. Qualitative interviews with seven women entrepreneurs were conducted. The study findings indicated that self-leadership is a process that can be developed and mastered by women entrepreneurs so that they have better chances of success in their business start-ups. This study provides a model of the self-leadership process that illustrates a range of influences that are likely to contribute to women entrepreneurs’ self-leadership development. The Stakeholders The model developed would be beneficial to human resource development (HRD) practitioners and Malaysian government agencies (e.g., SME Corporation Malaysia) that design and deliver interventions (e.g., incubator programs and training workshops) focusing on women entrepreneurs’ self-leadership development.

Climate change is increasingly impacting health, and health care is contributing to climate change through carbon emissions. Nurses can help mitigate climate change and its effects through leadership development initiatives to expand the impact of the efforts of a single person by activating others. This article describes one such nurse-led leadership development project. The intervention adapted a workshop series curriculum for faith community audiences to a health professional audience. The program gave participants the ability to assess their assets, understand the psychology of communication of climate change, and design appropriately-scaled actions to help mitigate climate change. The program consisted of three in-person workshop sessions plus bi-weekly individual consultations with participants. The seven participants included physicians, nurses, physician and nurse educators, a public health professional, and a veterinary medicine student. The workshops included content on communicating about climate change, crafting a public narrative/storytelling, and tools and methods for organizing in the climate movement. Participants completed action plans including a broad range of leadership efforts as part of the intervention; all participants completed at least the first step of their action plan during the program period. Qualitative interviews highlighted facets of participants' experiences. Nurses and other health professionals are leading the way in mitigating climate change; leadership development programs such as this are one way of taking effective climate action.

The overall aim of this case study was to understand the role of nature sports guides in promoting sustainable local development. The study adopted a qualitative and descriptive case study approach. Data was collected from participant observation in one nature sports tourism company established in the area of Coimbra region in the centre of Portugal, as well as in-depth semi-structured qualitative interviews applied to a sample of 30 nature sports guides working in nature sports tourism companies, established in the same region. The data collected from both participant observation and interviews were analysed through categorical content analysis. The findings reveal that the nature sports guides have already adopted certain sustainability practices in the analysed dimensions. However, the greatest focus of the nature sports guides is the instrumental role. Findings of this study are important for both the industry and academy and some strategies will be discussed so that the great potential of nature sports for the promotion of sustainable local development can be reached.

Aims and methodNewly appointed consultant psychiatrists have reported that management and leadership is an area for which they are unprepared. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of a leadership development programme based on the principles of ‘action learning’ for higher trainees. A questionnaire survey was sent to 54 trainees and consultants who had attended the programme. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 15 participants using the concept of maximum variance sampling.ResultsThe relevance of the topics covered, the opportunity for free discussion and increased understanding of National Health Service policy were rated highest. At the end of a thematic analysis, themes were organised into four major categories: (a) lack of engagement with management during training; (b) the lasting impact of the leadership development programme; (c) understanding the larger organisational context; and (d) transition to consultant psychiatrist.Clinical implicationsThe findings suggest that programmes such as this can be successful in raising awareness and increasing engagement in medical leadership and management.

Relative to the general population, Native Americans (NA) bear a disproportionate burden of suicide-related mortality rates. NA males and females aged 15 to 24 years experience suicide rates nearly 3 times than the U.S. all races rates in this age group. Although efforts have been made to understand and reduce suicide in tribal communities, a large portion has focused on individual characteristics with less attention given to social factors that may also inform suicide. This article aims to build on a local conceptual model of NA youth suicide by examining additional potential social factors through qualitative interviews. Findings from the thematic analysis resulted in the identification of seven perceived social influences: contagion, violence and abuse, discrimination and bullying, negative expectations, spirituality, social support, and cultural strengths. Public health approaches to reduce suicide should consider local social factors that resonate with tribal communities to build resilience.

Abstract Background Medicine is a high-status, high-skill occupation which has traditionally provided access to good quality jobs and relatively high salaries. In Ireland, historic underfunding combined with austerity-related cutbacks has negatively impacted job quality to the extent that hospital medical jobs have begun to resemble extreme jobs. Extreme jobs combine components of a good quality job—high pay, high job control, challenging demands, with those of a low-quality job—long working hours, heavy workloads. Deteriorating job quality and the normalisation of extreme working is driving doctor emigration from Ireland and deterring return. Methods Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 40 Irish emigrant doctors in Australia who had emigrated from Ireland since 2008. Interviews were held in July–August 2018. Results Respondents reflected on their experiences of working in the Irish health system, describing hospital workplaces that were understaffed, overstretched and within which extreme working had become normalised, particularly in relation to long working hours, fast working pace, doing more with less and fighting a climate of negativity. Drawing on Hirschman’s work on exit, voice and loyalty (1970), the authors consider doctor emigration as exit and present respondent experiences of voice prior to emigration. Only 14/40 respondent emigrant doctors intend to return to work in Ireland. Discussion The deterioration in medical job quality and the normalisation of extreme working is a key driver of doctor emigration from Ireland, and deterring return. Irish trained hospital doctors emigrate to access good quality jobs in Australia and are increasingly likely to remain abroad once they have secured them. To improve doctor retention, health systems and employers must mitigate a gainst the emergence of extreme work in healthcare. Employee voice (about working conditions, about patient safety, etc.) should be encouraged and used to inform health system improvement and to mitigate exit.

AbstractObjectivesNurses and respiratory therapists are seldom allowed to use automated external defibrillators (AED) during in-hospital cardiac arrest. This can result in significant time delays before defibrillation occurs and lower survival for cardiac arrest victims. We sought to identify barriers and facilitators to AED use by nurses and respiratory therapists.MethodsWe conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with a purposeful sample of nurses and respiratory therapists. We developed the interview guide based on the constructs of the theory of planned behaviour, which elicits salient attitudes, social influences, and control beliefs potentially influencing the intent to use an AED. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed until achieving data saturation. Two independent reviewers performed inductive analyses to identify emerging categories and themes, and ranked them by frequency of the number of participants stating the topic.ResultsDemographics for the 24 interviewees include mean age 40.5, 79.2% female, 87.5% performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), 29.2% defibrillated a patient. Identified attitudes pertained to the timeliness of defibrillation, patient survival, simplicity of AED use, accuracy of rhythm recognition, and harm to self or others. Social influences consisted of physician and hospital administration support of AED use. Control beliefs included training on AED use, policy allowing AED use, familiarity with AED, and task burden during resuscitation.ConclusionsMost nurses and respiratory therapists intended to use an AED if permitted to do so by a medical directive. Successful implementation would require educational initiatives focusing on safety and efficacy of AEDs, support from physicians and hospital administrators, and additional training on AED use.

Nikolai Alexandrovich Mel'gunov, the son of a well-to-do landowner, was born in 1804 in the province of Orel, south-west of Moscow. He was educated largely at home by private tutors and was well read at an early age. When Mel'gunov was still a boy the family moved to Kharkov and soon thereafter their home became a center of intellectual and social life. Among those who participated in the gatherings at the Mel'gunovs were professors from the newly-established University of Kharkov as well as government officials.

Artiklen belyser, med udgangspunkt i Ellströms kategorisering af handlings-, videns- og læringsniveauer (1996), at der eksisterer en generel grundlæggende forskel mellem, hvad underviserne oplever, at masterstuderende har som mål med deres uddannelse, og hvad underviserne selv tolker som det overordnede mål. De studerendes mål er ifølge underviserne overvejende at få teoretisk viden og teoretisk funderede svar på konkrete problemstillinger, mens undervisernes mål er at skabe refleksive praktikere gennem arbejdet med teorier og teori-praksis¬inte¬gra¬tion. Artiklen er baseret på kvalitative interviews med fem erfarne underviserer fra tre forskellige masteruddannelser, hvor kernefelterne er læreprocesser, organisations- og professionsudvikling samt lederudvikling. Based on Ellström’s categorization of levels of action, knowledge and learning (1996), the article shows that a fundamental difference exists between master students’ objectives for their education as experienced by the teachers, and the teachers’ own interpretation of the overall objectives. According to the teachers, the students’ objectives are primarily to acquire theoretical knowledge and theoretically based answers or solutions to specific practice related problems, whereas the teachers’ objectives are to create reflective practitioners through their work with theories and theory-practice integration. The article is based on qualitative interviews conducted with five experienced teachers from three different master programmes that focus on learning processes, organizational- and professional development and leadership development.
