ABSTRACTTo date, the behavior of hyperthermophilic microorganisms in their biotope has been studied only to a limited degree; this is especially true for motility. One reason for this lack of knowledge is the requirement for high-temperature microscopy—combined, in most cases, with the need for observations under strictly anaerobic conditions—for such studies. We have developed a custom-made, low-budget device that, for the first time, allows analyses in temperature gradients up to 40°C over a distance of just 2 cm (a biotope-relevant distance) with heating rates up to ∼5°C/s. Our temperature gradient-forming device can convert any upright light microscope into one that works at temperatures as high as 110°C. Data obtained by use of this apparatus show how very well hyperthermophiles are adapted to their biotope: they can react within seconds to elevated temperatures by starting motility—even after 9 months of storage in the cold. Using the temperature gradient-forming device, we determined the temperature ranges for swimming, and the swimming speeds, of 15 selected species of the genusThermococcuswithin a few months, related these findings to the presence of cell surface appendages, and obtained the first evidence for thermotaxis inArchaea.

PurposeThe Reinforced Concrete(RC) elements are known to perform well during exposure to elevated temperatures. Hence, RC elements are widely used to resist the extreme heat developing from accidental fires and other industrial processes. In both of the scenarios, the RC element is exposed to elevated temperatures. However, the primary differences between the fire and processed temperatures are the rate of temperature increase, mode of exposure and exposure durations. In order to determine the effect of two heating modalities, RC beams were exposed to processed temperatures with slow heating rates and fire with fast heating rates.Design/methodology/approachIn the present study, RC beam specimens were exposed to 200 °C, to 800 °C temperature at 200 °C intervals for 2 h' duration by adopting two heating modes; Fire and processed temperatures. An electrical furnace with low-temperature increment and a fire furnace with standard time-temperature increment is adapted to expose the RC elements to elevated temperatures.FindingsIt is observed from test results that, the reduction in load-carrying capacity, first crack load, and thermal crack widths of RC beams exposed to 200 °C, and 600 °C temperature at fire is significantly high from the RC beams exposed to the processed temperature having the same maximum temperature. As the exposure temperature increases to 800 °C, the performance of RC beams at all heating modes becomes approximately equal.Originality/valueIn this work, residual performance, and failure modes of RC beams exposed to elevated temperatures were achieved through two different heating modes are presented.

Purpose This paper aims to describe coupon tests performed at elevated temperatures on S355 to S500 steel grades and comparison of test results with previous research studies and current EN 1993-1-2 material laws. The objective is to state if these steel grades satisfy to the current material laws and if the scope of application of these laws could be extended to S500 grades. Design/methodology/approach Two experimental programmes were launched to investigate the behaviour of S460M and S500M steel grades developed for hot-rolled sections. The first research programme was focussed on a comparison between S355 and S460 grades, where the second experimental programme was focussed on the recently developed S500M steel grade. The latter one comprised steady-state tests, transient-state tests and two large-scale beam tests. Findings Results of steady-state and transient-state tests correlate well with the reduction factors defined in EN 1993-1-2, currently limited to S460 grade. On the basis of this study, the scope of EN 1993-1-2 applies to S500 grades. For steady-state tests, the testing procedure (with and without acceleration after Rp0,2) led to noticeable differences. Transient-state tests, which are not standardised up to now, have been performed considering 5 K/min and 10 K/min constant heating rates. The slowest rate leads to lower strengths as creep effects are more significant. However, all the results are in line with EN 1993-1-2 material law. Importance should be given to the reference yield strength of steel at ambient temperature. Originality/value The revision of EN 1993-1-2 is on-going and this piece of work provides a contribution for extending the scope of application of material law of steel under fire conditions.

Purpose This paper aims on a methodology to overcome the fact that conventional service life testing of porous journal bearings (PJBs) requires long test times and is not economical. Design/methodology/approach This paper sketches out a pathway to strongly accelerated life tests for PJBs enabled by high load and elevated temperature, which saves months or even years of testing. The testing time is not only reduced to a few weeks, but the results are also statistically secured via a multiple test rig construction of a custom-made tribometer. Findings An exemplary bearing-lubricant combination is tested in the mixed lubrication regime, where the coefficient of friction is monitored during the test. Originality/value A Weibull curve is fitted to the experimental results to show the survival probability of the combination over time. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to summarise a number of presentations at Day 1 of the Internet Librarian International conference, London, UK (16 October 2018). This was the 20th conference in the series, and the three key themes included were the next-gen library and librarian; understanding users, usage and user experience; and inclusion and inspiration: libraries making a difference. Design/methodology/approach This paper reports from the viewpoint of a first-time attendee of the conference. This summarises the main issues raised by each presentation and draws out the key learning points for practical situations. Findings The conference covered a variety of practical ways in which libraries can use technology to support users and make decisions about services. These include developing interactive physical spaces which include augmented reality; introducing “chat-bots” to support users; using new techniques to analyse data; and piloting new ways to engage users (such as coding clubs). A key theme was how we use and harness data in a way that is ethical, effective and relevant to library services. Originality/value This conference focussed on practical examples of how library and information services across sectors and countries are innovating in a period of huge change. The conference gave delegates numerous useful ideas and examples of best practice and demonstrated the strength of the profession in adapting to new technologies and developments.

Purpose This paper aims to study the conditions for the hedging portfolio of any contingent claim on bonds to have no bank account part. Design/methodology/approach Hedging and Malliavin calculus techniques recently developed under a stochastic string framework are applied. Findings A necessary and sufficient condition for the hedging portfolio to have no bank account part is found. This condition is applied to a barrier option, and an example of a contingent claim whose hedging portfolio has a bank account part different from zero is provided. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time that this issue has been addressed in the literature.

ABSTRACTThis paper reports doubly clamped microchannel embedded resonators with two independent and parallel channels integrated for effective sample density tuning for the first time. With the aid of such a unique design, each fluidic channel can be independently accessed thus different liquid samples can be loaded simultaneously. The proposed fluidic resonators are batch fabricated by depositing silicon nitride, polysilicon, and silicon nitride sequentially on top of a set of 4-inch silicon wafers and sacrificing the middle polysilicon layer with potassium hydroxide (KOH). The sacrificial process defines two parallel channels and releases doubly clamped beam resonators simultaneously. In addition, an off-chip vacuum clamp with optical and fluidic access is custom-made to operate each resonator with enhanced quality factor. The microfluidic resonators mounted on the custom vacuum clamp are thoroughly characterized with a laser Doppler vibrometer and used to measure the effective sample density ranging from 395 to 998 kg/m3.

In recent years, there has been a surge of interest in char production from lignocellulosic biomass due to the fact of char’s interesting technological properties. Global char production in 2019 reached 53.6 million tons. Barks are among the most important and understudied lignocellulosic feedstocks that have a large potential for exploitation, given bark global production which is estimated to be as high as 400 million cubic meters per year. Chars can be produced from barks; however, in order to obtain the desired char yields and for simulation of the pyrolysis process, it is important to understand the differences between barks and woods and other lignocellulosic materials in addition to selecting a proper thermochemical method for bark-based char production. In this state-of-the-art review, after analyzing the main char production methods, barks were characterized for their chemical composition and compared with other important lignocellulosic materials. Following these steps, previous bark-based char production studies were analyzed, and different barks and process types were evaluated for the first time to guide future char production process designs based on bark feedstock. The dry and wet pyrolysis and gasification results of barks revealed that application of different particle sizes, heating rates, and solid residence times resulted in highly variable char yields between the temperature range of 220 °C and 600 °C. Bark-based char production should be primarily performed via a slow pyrolysis route, considering the superior surface properties of slow pyrolysis chars.

Purpose Many people in severe mentally disturbed states do not use language or other symbolic media well or coherently. Therefore, the non-verbal medium needs to be understood by workers with such people. The “Learning from Action” experiential workshop was developed in order to provide an opportunity to learn about hidden messages in the relationships and roles occurring in activities. In August 2017, a workshop was run for the first time in Japan. The purpose of this paper is to report the experience and dynamics observed by the three consultants, who are here the authors of this paper. Design/methodology/approach After the workshop all the staff and members, including interpreters, were invited to give feedback. Findings Analysis of the feedback data showed certain important dynamics, concerning especially dependence, cultural defences and the defensive role of activity in a multicultural context. Research limitations/implications This is an initial experience to be followed up by later feedback and further workshops. Practical implications Workers awareness of non-verbal communication within the roles of work activities is a training possibility. It faces various resistances including the mental health assumptions of meaninglessness of any communication outside the verbal. Originality/value This is a method of training not widely used even in European countries, and is the first in a country in the far east.

The results of investigations on pyrolysis and oxidation of pure polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and its mixture with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) under non-isothermal conditions at linear change of samples temperature in time are presented. In each case process proceeded in different way. During pyrolysis of pure PAN the material containing mainly the product after PAN cyclization was obtained, while pyrolysis of PAN+DMF mixture gave the product after cyclization and stabilization. Under conditions of measurements, in both temperature ranges, series of gaseous products were formed.For the PAN-DMF system measurements at different samples heating rates were performed. The obtained results were in accordance with the kinetics of heterogeneous processes theory. The process rates in stages increased along with the temperature increase, and TG, DTG and HF function curves were shifted into higher temperature range. This means that the process of pyrolysis and oxidation of PAN in dry air can be carried out in a controlled way.http://dx.doi.org/10.5755/j01.ms.17.1.246

Purpose The paper aims to present a systematic conceptual analysis of the problem of organizational goal and to reduce the insights into it provided by the main conceptions taken in their development from one to another, to break out of the ruling paradigm and outline a new solution. Design/methodology/approach The study has been carried out from the historical and critical perspective. Findings The paper discovers the logic of the evolution the approaches to organizational goals have undergone and portrays it in a matrix form in the heart of which is the “zigzag effect”: each posterior stage returns to the essential elements rejected by those preceding it, and the last stage, being diametrically opposite to the first, is, at that, as well as the latter, akin to the intermediate stages. The opportunities afforded by the current paradigm have been exhausted and it seems to run to an impasse. Instead, the author suggests a new frame of orientation: organizational goals are closely interknit with personal, but not reducible to them and bear fundamentally transpersonal character, while the mechanism of involving the preferences of individuals and groups in goal-setting is based on the self-contained interests of the organization they pertain to. Research limitations/implications The findings, conclusions and generalizations obtained can serve for a necessary ground to researchers getting deeper into the essence of what bonds organizational life and activity. Practical implications The material empowers practitioners to comprehend the difficulties of framing cohesive goal and find efficient ways to overcome them. It is of value also to the teachers seeking to present a more exact and elaborate view of teleological foundations of management and organization theory. Originality/value Both the conceptual analysis of the evolution of the approaches to organizational goals and the author’s exposition of its logic and vision of their nature are provided for the first time.
