Skirted foundations are a potential foundation solution for a range of offshore structures, including hydrocarbon and renewable energy platforms and subsea structures. Offshore foundations can be subject to cyclic loading from environmental, installation, and operational events affecting the geotechnical response. A series of centrifuge tests have been performed on a shallow skirted foundation on normally consolidated kaolin clay under a range of vertical cyclic load sequences to investigate the effect of tensile or compressive average stress, the magnitude of the applied stress, and the effect of cyclic loading of low magnitude followed by consolidation on the foundation response. Results are presented as vertical foundation displacements normalized by the foundation geometry and interpreted within the traditional shear-strain contour approach. The findings indicate that the average, rather than maximum, vertical stress defines the foundation vertical displacement response and failure mode, a threshold stress exists below which a steady state is maintained even at a high number of cycles, and geotechnical resistance increases as a result of low-level cyclic loading followed by consolidation.

This paper is presented the lateral dynamic response of pile groups embedded in dry sand under influence of vertical loads and the pile shape in-group, which are subjected to the lateral two-way cyclic loads. The laboratory typical tests with pile groups (2×1) have an aluminum-pipe (i.e. circular, square) pile, embedded length to diameter of pile ratio (L/D=40) and spacing to diameter ratio (S/D) of 3, 5, 7 and 9 are used with different cyclic-load ratio (CLR) 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8. The experimental results are revealed that both the vertical and lateral pile capacity and displacement is significantly affected by the cyclic-loading factors i.e. (number of cycles, cyclic load ratio, and shape of pile) .In this study, important design references are presented. Which are explained that the response of the pile groups under cyclic lateral loading are clear affected by the attendance of vertical load and pile shape. Where, it is reduction the lateral displacement of group piles head and increase lateral capacity about (50) % compared without vertical loads. On the other side, the pile shape is a well affected to the pile response where the level of decline in lateral displacement at the pile groups head in the square pile is more than circular pile about 20 % at the same load intensity.

The fiber beam-column post-buckling element has been formulated and implemented in the non-linear program DRAIN-3DX to predict Buckling, Post-buckling and hysteresis behaviour of tubular Struts and Portals. In this element both material and geometric non-linearities are considered. The element is applied to simulate post buckling and hysteric response of tubular members subjected to cyclic loading. Also Psuedo-Static analysis of X-braced frame subjected to cyclic load has been perfomed. The predicted overall response matched well with the available experimental and other analytical results.

This paper deals with the problem of a strip with a hole subjected to cyclic loading at the ends. For the numerical analysis, a constitutive model incorporating the motion of the center of the yield surface is implemented in a finite element method. The distributions of strain and stress during cyclic loading are discussed in detail both for the zero and nonzero mean values of cyclic load. To verify the results of the computer simulation, an experiment on a strip with a hole of type 304 stainless steel is carried out. Results of the experiment show that during cyclic loading with nonzero mean value of cyclic load, strain at the bottom of the circular hole is ratchetted with increase in number of cycles, and the stress approaches that due to the zero mean value of cyclic load.

Considering the relationship between inhomogeneous plastic deformation and fatigue damage, deformation inhomogeneity evolution and fatigue failure of superalloy GH4169 under temperature 500 °C and macro tension compression cyclic loading are studied, by using crystal plasticity calculation associated with polycrystalline representative Voronoi volume element (RVE). Different statistical standard deviation and differential entropy of meso strain are used to measure the inhomogeneity of deformation, and the relationship between the inhomogeneity and strain cycle is explored by cyclic numerical simulation. It is found from the research that the standard deviations of each component of the strain tensor at the cyclic peak increase monotonically with the cyclic loading, and they are similar to each other. The differential entropy of each component of the strain tensor also increases with the number of cycles, and the law is similar. On this basis, the critical values determined by statistical standard deviations of the strain components and the equivalent strain, and that by differential entropy of strain components, are, respectively, used as fatigue criteria, then predict the fatigue–life curves of the material. The predictions are verified with reference to the measured results, and their deviations are proved to be in a reasonable range.

E-glass fibre reinforced polyester matrix composite was investigated, which was made by pullwinding process. Round three point bending (RTPB) specimens were tested under quasi-static and mode I cyclic loading conditions. Load vs. displacement (F-f), load vs. crack opening displacement (F-v) and crack opening displacement range vs. number of cycles (ΔCOD-N) curves were registered and analysed. Interfacial cracks were caused the final longitudinal fracture of the specimens under quasi-static and cyclic loading conditions.

This paper deals with asymptotic stability of an analytically derived, synchronous as well as nonsynchronous, steady-state solution of an impact system which exhibits piecewise linear characteristics connected with rock drilling. The exact solution, which assumes one impact for a given number of cycles of the external excitation, is derived, its asymptotic stability is examined, and ranges of parameters are determined for which asymptotic stability is assured. The theoretically predicted stability or instability is verified by a digital computer simulation.

In the literature, typical analytical track response models are composed of beams (which represent the rail) on viscoelastic or elastic foundations. The load is usually considered as a single concentrated force (constant or varying in time) moving with constant speed. Concentrated or distributed loads or multilayer track models have rarely been considered. One can find some interesting results concerning analysis of distributed loads and multilayer track structures that include both analytical and numerical approaches. However, there is a noticeable lack of sufficient comparison between track responses under concentrated or distributed load and between one and multilayer track models. One of the unique features of the present paper is a comparison of data obtained for a series of concentrated and distributed loads, which takes into account a wide range of track parameters and train speeds. One of the fundamental questions associated with the multilayer track model is the level of coupling between the rail and the vibrations of the sleepers. In this paper, it is proved that sleepers are weakly coupled with the rail if the track is without significant imperfections, and the steady-state response is analyzed for this case. In other words, sleeper vibrations do not influence the rail vibrations significantly. Therefore the track is analyzed by means of a two-stage model. The first step of this model determines rail vibration under a moving load, and then the sleeper vibration is calculated from previously obtained kinematic excitation. The model is verified by comparison of the obtained results with experimental data. Techniques based on Fourier series are applied to the solution of the steady-state track response. Another important problem associated with track response under moving loads arises from the analysis of the effect of longitudinal forces in rails on vertical displacement. It is shown that, in the case of the steady-state response, longitudinal forces do not influence rail displacements significantly and this observation remains correct for a wide range of track parameters and train speeds. The paper also analyzes the legitimacy of the statement that additional rail deflection between sleepers, compared to the continuous rail support, can be considered as a track imperfection.

Abstract In this study, rat femurs were used to test the diffusion and mechanical transport properties of a fluroscein stain tracer in microvessels of bone. Fluroscein was used as a tracer to visualize the fluid flow behavior using confocal microscopy. It was found that stain transport occurs due to diffusion under static conditions and due to mechanical loading. The transport increased with cyclic load level and frequency. Our results also show that stain transport at the canaliculi level occurs rapidly in rat bone.

For the economical construction of fatigue loaded structures with textile reinforced concrete (TRC), it is necessary to investigate the fatigue behavior of the materials. Since next to the tensile load-bearing behavior, the bond behavior of a material is crucial as well, the present paper deals with the bond fatigue of TRC with epoxy-impregnated carbon textiles. First, static tests are carried out to determine the sufficient anchorage length of the investigated material combination. Afterwards, the influence of cyclic loading on the necessary anchorage length, deformation, stiffness, and residual strength is investigated. The results of the cyclic tests are summarized in stress-number of cycles to failure (S-N) diagrams. In the end, it can be said that the cyclic loading has no negative impact on the necessary anchorage length. If specimens withstand the cyclic loading, there is no difference between their residual strength and the reference strength. The failure of specimens occurs only at high load levels, provided that the anchorage length is sufficient.
