In recent years, the sewer system in Japan is becoming obsolete. It is, therefore, necessary to reinforce or repair without stopping sewer functions by applying a suitable water stopping method. In this study, a multi-layered sewer pipe plug consisting of a protective sheet and inner and outer rubber balls is focused since it can be installed and removed at the construction site in a short time conveniently. This sewer pipe plug has several advantages dealing with various diameters compared to the conventional type. In this study, the rupture test is conducted to improve the water stopping performance. The fractured position of the protective sheet of the sewer pipe plug is investigated experimentally. It is clarified that the maximum stress around the flange portion can be reduced by decreasing the flange inner diameter.

Since the sewer system in Japan is becoming obsolete, it is, therefore necessary to reinforce or repair without stopping sewer functions by applying a suitable water stopping method. In this study, a multi-layered sewer pipe plug consisting of a protective sheet and inner and outer rubber balls is focused since it can be installed and removed at the construction site in a short time conveniently. Four types of adhesively bonded structures are investigated experimentally by changing bonding processes and adhesives. It is found that the main and base adhesive joint is the most suitable since the pressurized adhesive strength [Formula: see text] MPa is 30% of the standard tensile strength of the protective sheet [Formula: see text] MPa.

Since Japanese sewer system is becoming obsolete, it is necessary to reinforce and repair the system without stopping sewer functions. In this study, a multi-layered sewer pipe plug consisting of a protective sheet and inner and outer rubber balls is focused to be installed and removed conveniently at the construction site. In this paper, a suitable testing method and the strength of the protective sheet are discussed experimentally by changing the specimen geometry providing slit and seams. It is found that the slit specimen is most desirable to obtain the standard tensile strength of UHMWPE cloth named Izanas cloth. It is found that the seamed strength is [Formula: see text] MPa, which is about 17% of the standard tensile strength [Formula: see text] MPa.

To get knowledge about the runoff, storage and combined sewer overflow (CSO) conditions since 1985 a measuring and monitoring system is working in the sewer network of the community Ense-Bremen (near Dortmund). Within this semi-urban catchment seven detention facilities are fitted out with devices for monitoring information about basin outflow, grade of volume and CSO. Since October 1986 the determined data are also used for the real-time control of that sewerage. Since its installation the monitoring system works rather satisfyingly. Especially the operating staff use its possibilities to get information about the actual condition of the sewer system. Thus, differences to the normal runoff conditions can be realised in very short time. That allows an immediate reaction in order to clear malfunctions or errors as well. However, within the ten years there have also occurred some failures at the measuring devices caused by different reasons up to a complete breakdown of the whole system during thunder-storms. All in all the results of that pilot project have been positive and are now the basis for the equipment of further detention facilities in other sewer systems with monitoring devices.

The stress analysis of the intersections region of nozzle & blind flange is implemented by means of FEA. The stress variation rule was obtained and the maximum Stress intensity is at the inside of intersections region of nozzle & blind flange. In accordance with JB4732-1995 (2005 Confirmed edition), the safety of structure was evaluated. The results show that the dimensiom given in the paper can meet the requirement for safety.

The aim was to redesign and manufacture of a shovel for a pull-type land levelling machine, which, in its present condition, is used to get easily damaged even under low loads. Firstly, the maximum pulling load affecting the levelling shovel was experimentally determined. Then, stable-shovel system with the bolt connection was replaced with a bearing-shaft connection system. In this way, the new shovel has gained a capability of making oscillation motion so that it can operate on sloped grounds. CATIA program was used in the design studies. The shovel system was investigated by assembly structural stress analyses. This new construction enabled the system to operate 3 times more securely at maximum stress conditions without changing the levelling shovel material. Thus, it is managed to prevent any possible damages that might occur due to maximum loading conditions of the system. Besides, displacements that occur on the shovel decreased at the rate of 90%.

AbstractThe objective of the present study to assess the performance of a suggested sewer line by using pipe jacking system (PJS) in order to enhance the sewage capacity and mitigate sewer flooding of historic pilgrimage city of Karbala, Iraq. The storm water management model (SWMM5) was used for this purpose. The simulation of exiting sewer system reveals that sewer discharge during peak pilgrimage period is more than 200% of the capacity of existing sewer line. Installation of SLL having a diameter of 2.5 m at a depth ranging between 12 and 22 m by PJS can reduce water depth in sewer pipe by 78%. The reduction of water depth at sewer pipe can reduce sewer overflow up to 70%, if the system is installed and managed properly. The methodology proposed in the paper can be applied in any location having similar problem with necessary modifications.

The zero-to-tension ratchetting behavior was investigated under uniaxial loading at room temperature and at 550, 600, and 650°C. In History I the maximum stress level of ratchetting was equal to the stress reached in a tensile test at one percent strain. For History II the maximum stress level was established as the stress reached after a 2100 s relaxation at one percent strain. Significant ratchetting was observed for History I at room temperature but not at the elevated temperatures. The accumulated ratchet strain increases with decreasing stress rate. Independent of the stress rates used insignificant ratchet strain was observed at room temperature for History II. This observation is explained in the context of the viscoplasticity theory based on overstress by the exhaustion of the viscous contribution to the stress during relaxation. The viscous part of the stress is the driving force for the ratchetting in History I. Strain aging is presumably responsible for the lack of short-time inelastic deformation resulting in a nearly rate-independent behavior at the elevated temperatures.

Cast iron and steel conveying rollers used in hot rolling mills must be changed very frequently because conveyed strips with high temperature induces wear on the roller surface in short periods. This failure automatically stops the production line for repair and maintenance of conveying rollers. In this study a new type of roller is considered where a ceramics sleeve is connected with two short shafts at both ends by shrink fitting. Here, a ceramics sleeve provides longer life and therefore reduces the cost for the maintenance. However, for the hollow ceramics rollers, care should be taken for maximum tensile stresses appearing at both edges of the sleeve. In particular, because fracture toughness is extremely smaller compared with the value of steel, stress analysis for the roller is necessary for ceramics sleeve. In this study FEM analysis is applied to the structure, and the maximum stress has been investigated with varying the dimensions of the structure. It is found that the maximum tensile stress appearing at the end of sleeves takes a minimum value at a certain amount of shrink fitting ratio.

Finite element stress analysis has been performed to determine the effects of two O.D. notch configurations in a cylinder subjected to internal pressure, or containing autofrettage residual stress. The effects on the residual stresses were determined by simulating these stresses with equivilent temperature loads. The results show that the deeper of the two notch cofigurations is far more severe resulting in a maximum stress concentration factor of 6.6. The shallower notch has a maximum stress concentration factor of 3.7. An additional result is that by introducing notches in autofrettaged cylinders a significant amount of the residual stresses are relieved which indicates that smaller applied pressures can be applied before yielding occurs. The results also show that the possibility of O.D. initiated fatigue failure is greatly increased.
