Determination of Acoustic Scattering Matrices from Linearized Compressible Flow Equations with Application to Thermoacoustic Stability Analysis

The acoustic transmissions and reflections of plane waves at duct singularities can be represented with so-called scattering matrices. This paper shows how to extract scattering matrices utilizing linearized compressible flow equations and provides a comparative study of different governing equations, namely the Helmholtz, linearized Euler and linearized Navier–Stokes equations. A discontinuous Galerkin finite element method together with a two-source forcing is employed. With this method, the scattering matrix for a radial swirler of a combustion test-rig is computed and validated against the results of a fully compressible Large-Eddy-Simulation. Analogously, the scattering behavior of an axial swirler is investigated. The influence of acoustic-hydrodynamic interactions, viscous effects as well as unsteady boundary layers on the results is investigated for both configurations. A thermoacoustic stability analysis of the combustion test-rig housing the axial swirler is carried out, utilizing the scattering matrix of the swirler. Major influence of the reflections coming from the swirler on the thermoacoustic eigenfrequencies is found.

An aerodynamic shape optimization method has previously been developed by the authors using the Euler equations and has been applied to supersonic-hypersonic nozzle designs. This method has also included a flowfield extrapolation (or flow prediction) method based on the Taylor series expansion of an existing CFD solution. The present paper reports on the extension of this method to the thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations in order to account for the viscous effects. Also, to test the method under highly nonlinear conditions, it has been applied to the transonic flows. Initially, the success of the flow prediction method is tested. Then, the overall method is demonstrated by optimizing the shapes of two supercritical transonic airfoils at zero angle of attack. The first one is shape optimized to achieve a minimum drag while obtaining a lift above a specified value. Whereas, the second one is shape optimized for a maximum lift while attaining a drag below a specified value. The results of these two cases indicate that the present method can produce successfully optimized aerodynamic shapes.

This study deals with the development of an accurate, efficient and robust method for the numerical solution of the interaction of compressible flow and nonlinear dynamic elasticity. This problem requires the reliable solution of flow in time-dependent domains and the solution of deformations of elastic bodies formed by several materials with complicated geometry depending on time. In this paper, the fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problem is solved numerically by the space-time discontinuous Galerkin method (STDGM). In the case of compressible flow, we use the compressible Navier–Stokes equations formulated by the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) method. The elasticity problem uses the non-stationary formulation of the dynamic system using the St. Venant–Kirchhoff and neo-Hookean models. The STDGM for the nonlinear elasticity is tested on the Hron–Turek benchmark. The main novelty of the study is the numerical simulation of the nonlinear vocal fold vibrations excited by the compressible airflow coming from the trachea to the simplified model of the vocal tract. The computations show that the nonlinear elasticity model of the vocal folds is needed in order to obtain substantially higher accuracy of the computed vocal folds deformation than for the linear elasticity model. Moreover, the numerical simulations showed that the differences between the two considered nonlinear material models are very small.

A new high-performance numerical model (Frehg) is developed to simulate water flow in shallow coastal wetlands. Frehg solves the 2D depth-integrated, hydrostatic, Navier–Stokes equations (i.e., shallow-water equations) in the surface domain and the 3D variably-saturated Richards equation in the subsurface domain. The two domains are asynchronously coupled to model surface-subsurface exchange. The Frehg model is applied to evaluate model sensitivity to a variety of simplifications that are commonly adopted for shallow wetland models, especially the use of the diffusive wave approximation in place of the traditional Saint-Venant equations for surface flow. The results suggest that a dynamic model for momentum is preferred over diffusive wave model for shallow coastal wetlands and marshes because the latter fails to capture flow unsteadiness. Under the combined effects of evaporation and wetting/drying, using diffusive wave model leads to discrepancies in modeled surface-subsurface exchange flux in the intertidal zone where strong exchange processes occur. It indicates shallow wetland models should be built with (i) dynamic surface flow equations that capture the timing of inundation, (ii) complex topographic features that render accurate spatial extent of inundation, and (iii) variably-saturated subsurface flow solver that is capable of modeling moisture change in the subsurface due to evaporation and infiltration.

The development and application of a three-dimensional inverse methodology is presented for the design of turbomachinery blades. The method is based on the mass-averaged swirl, rV~θ distribution and computes the necessary blade changes directly from the discrepancies between the target and initial distributions. The flow solution and blade modification converge simultaneously giving the final blade geometry and the corresponding steady state flow solution. The flow analysis is performed using a cell-vertex finite volume time-marching algorithm employing the multistage Runge-Kutta integrator in conjunction with accelerating techniques (local time stepping and grid sequencing). To account for viscous effects, dissipative forces are included in the Euler solver using the log-law and mixing length models. The design method can be used with any existing solver solving the same flow equations without any modifications to the blade surface wall boundary condition. Validation of the method has been carried out using a transonic annular turbine nozzle and NASA rotor 67. Finally, the method is demonstrated on the re-design of the blades.

Two methods are described for calculating pressure distributions and boundary layers on blades subjected to low Reynolds numbers and ramp-type motion. The first is based on an interactive scheme in which the inviscid flow is computed by a panel method and the boundary layer flow by an inverse method that makes use of the Hilbert integral to couple the solutions of the inviscid and viscous flow equations. The second method is based on the solution of the compressible Navier–Stokes equations with an embedded grid technique that permits accurate calculation of boundary layer flows. Studies for the Eppler-387 and NACA-0012 airfoils indicate that both methods can be used to calculate the behavior of unsteady blade boundary layers at low Reynolds numbers provided that the location of transition is computed with the en method and the transitional region is modeled properly.

A brief review of current approaches to active feedback control of the fluctuations arising in turbulent flows is presented, emphasizing the mathematical techniques involved. Active feedback control schemes are categorized and compared by examining the extent to which they are based on the governing flow equations. These schemes are broken down into the following categories: adaptive schemes, schemes based on heuristic physical arguments, schemes based on a dynamical systems approach, and schemes based on optimal control theory applied directly to the Navier-Stokes equations. Recent advances in methods of implementing small scale flow control ideas are also reviewed.

The main goal of this paper is to improve identification methods for rotordynamic coefficients of labseals for turbines. This aim was achieved in joint effort of the Technische Universita¨t Mu¨nchen, working on experimental identification methods for rotordynamic coefficients, the University of Technology, Darmstadt, working on prediction methods, and Siemens AG, realizing the results. The paper focuses on a short comb-grooved labyrinth seal. Short labseals, amongst others the above mentioned comb-grooved labyrinth, were examined. by means of a very accurately measuring test rig. The rotor was brought into statically eccentric positions relative to the stator, in order to measure the circumferential pressure distribution as a function of pressure, rotating speed and entrance swirl. The data collected were used to validate results obtained with a numerical method. The theoretical approach is based on a commercial CFD tool, which solves the Navier Stokes equations using numerical methods. As a result, a detailed model of the flow within the test rig is produced. The efforts of computation here are greater than when compared with the likewise wide-spread Bulk flow models, however improved accuracy and flexibility is expected. As the validation of the model is successful, it could then be used to gain further insight in the flow within the seal, and to understand the results better. This showed that rotordynamic coefficients of labseals gained from different test rigs are not necessarily comparable.

Spin-up flows of a compressible gas in a finite, closed cylinder from an initial state of rest are studied, The flow is characterized by small reference Ekman numbers, and the peripheral Mach number is O(1). Comprehensive numerical solutions have been obtained for the full, time-dependent compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The details of the flow, temperature, and density evolution are described. In the early phase of spin-up, owing to the thermoacoustic disturbances caused by the compressible Rayleigh effect, the flows are oscillatory, and this oscillatory behaviour is pronounced at higher Mach numbers. The principal dynamical role of the Ekman layer is dominant over moderate times of orders of the homogeneous spin-up timescales. Owing to the density stratification in the radial direction, the Ekman layer is thicker in the central region of the interior. The interior azimuthal flows are mainly uniform in the axial direction. As the Mach number increases, the rate of spin-up in the interior becomes slower, and the propagating shear front is more diffusive. Explicit comparisons with the results for an infinite cylinder are made to ascertain the contributions of the endwall disks. In contrast to the usual incompressible spin-up from rest, the viscous effects are relatively more important for the case of a compressible fluid.

Abstract Numerical simulations were carried out with the purpose of investigating the effect of applying circumferential grooves at axial compressor casing passive wall treatment to enhance the stall margin and change the tip leakage flow. The tip leakage flow is pointed out as one of the main contributors to stall inception in axial compressors. Hence, it is of major importance to treat appropriately the flow in this region. Circumferential grooves have shown a good performance in enhancing the stall margin in previous researches by changing the flow path in the tip clearance region. In this work, a passive wall treatment with four circumferential grooves was applied in the transonic axial compressor NASA Rotor 37. Its effect on the axial compressor performance and the flow in the tip clearance region was analyzed and set against the results attained for the smooth wall case. A 2.63% increase in the operational range of the axial compressor running at 100%N, was achieved, when compared with the original smooth wall casing configuration. The grooves installed at compressor casing, causes an increase in the flow entropy generation due to the high viscous effects in this gap region, between the rotor tip surface and casing with grooves. These viscous effects cause a drop in the turbomachine efficiency. For the grooves configurations used in this work, an efficiency drop of 0.7% was observed, compared with the original smooth wall. All the simulations were performed based on 3D turbulent flow calculations using Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations, and the flow eddy viscosity was determined using the two-equation SST turbulence model. The details of the grooves geometrical dimensions and its implementation are described in the paper.

The Navier-Stokes equations are solved iteratively on a small digital computer for the class of flows generated within a rectangular “cavity” by a surface passing over its open end. Solutions are presented for depth/breadth ratios ƛ=0.5 (shallow), 10 (square), 20 (deep) and Reynolds number 100. Flow photographs ore obtained which largely confirm the predicted flows. The theoretical velocity profiles and pressure distributions through the centre of the vortex in the square cavity are calculated.In an appendix an improved finite difference formula is given for the vorticity generated at a moving boundary.Since Thorn began his pioneering work some thirty-five years ago the number of numerical solutions which have been obtained for the equations of incompressible viscous fluid motion remains small (see bibliographies of Thom and Apelt, Fromm). The known solutions are principally for steady streaming flows, although two methods have now been used with success for non-steady flows (Payne jets and Fromm flow past obstacles). By contrast this paper is concerned with the class of closed flows generated in a rectangular region of varying depth/breadth ratio by a surface passing over an open end. This problem has been considered for a number of reasons.
