Magnetic polyvinyl alcohol adsorbent M-PVAL was employed to remove and concentrate dimethyl phthalate DMP. The M-PVAL was prepared after sequential syntheses of magnetic Fe3O4(M) and polyvinyl acetate (M-PVAC). The saturated magnetizations of M, M-PVAC, and M-PVAL are 57.2, 26.0, and 43.2 emu g−1with superparamagnetism, respectively. The average size of M-PVAL by number is 0.75 μm in micro size. Adsorption experiments include three cases: (1) adjustment of initial pH (pH0) of solution to 5, (2) no adjustment of pH0with value in 6.04–6.64, and (3) adjusted pH0= 7. The corresponding saturated amounts of adsorption of unimolecular layer of Langmuir isotherm are 4.01, 5.21, and 4.22 mg g−1, respectively. Values of heterogeneity factor of Freundlich isotherm are 2.59, 2.19, and 2.59 which are greater than 1, revealing the favorable adsorption of DMP/M-PVAL system. Values of adsorption activation energy per mole of Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm are, respectively, of low values of 7.04, 6.48, and 7.19 kJ mol−1, indicating the natural occurring of the adsorption process studied. The tiny size of adsorbent makes the adsorption take place easily while its superparamagnetism is beneficial for the separation and recovery of micro adsorbent from liquid by applying magnetic field after completion of adsorption.

Biomorphic nano-hydroxyapatite (HAP) was fabricated by a co-precipitation method using cotton as bio-templates and employed in adsorptive removal of ofloxacin (OFL) and triclosan (TCS) that are two representative pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). The surface area and porosity, crystal phase, functional group, morphology and micro-structure of the synthesized HAP were characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller isotherm, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron macroscopic and transmission electron microscopy. The effects of initial pH, ionic strength, initial concentration, contact time and temperature on the removal of PPCPs were studied in a batch experiment. The adsorption of OFL and TCS was rapid and almost accomplished within 50 min. Kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption process of OFL and TCS followed the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. The Freundlich isotherm described the OFL adsorption process well but the adsorption of TCS fitted the Langmuir isotherm better. Thermodynamics and isotherm parameters suggested that both OFL and TCS adsorption were feasible and spontaneous. Hydrogen bond and Lewis acid–base reaction may be the dominating adsorption mechanism of OFL and TCS, respectively. Compared to other adsorbents, biomorphic HAP is environmentally friendly and has the advantages of high adsorption capacity, exhibiting potential application for PPCPs removal.

In this study, hierarchical MgAl-LDH (layered double hydroxide) nanoparticles with a flower-like morphology were prepared under a hydrothermal condition by employing worm-like micelles formed by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and salicylic acid (SA) as templates. The morphology and structure of the materials were characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), SEM, and XRD analyses. The performance for the adsorption of sulfonated lignite (SL) was also investigated in detail. FTIR was used to detect the presence of active functional groups and determine whether they play important roles in adsorption. The results showed that the hierarchical MgAl-LDH nanoparticles with a specific surface area of 126.31 m2/g possessed a flower-like morphology and meso–macroporous structures. The adsorption capacity was high—its value was 1014.20 mg/g at a temperature of 298 K and an initial pH = 7, which was higher than traditional MgAl-LDH (86 mg/g). The adsorption process of sulfonated lignite followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and conformed to Freundlich isotherm model with a spontaneous exothermic nature. In addition, the hierarchical MgAl-LDH could be regenerated and used, and the adsorption was high after three adsorption cycles. The main adsorption mechanisms were electrostatic attraction and ion exchange between the hierarchical MgAl-LDH and sulfonated lignite.

Regenerated silk fibroin beads (rSFB) were successfully prepared and applied to adsorbing methylene blue and Lanasyn Navy M-DNL. The effects of contact time, initial pH and initial concentration of dyes were analyzed. The experimental results showed that, the adsorption was pH dependent with a high removal efficiency of methylene blue in basic range and high removal of Lanasyn Navy M-DNL in acidic range. The adsorption process was analyzed by using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models and the Langmuir isotherm model showed the best fitting to the isotherm data. The maximum adsorption capacities for methylene blue and Lanasyn Navy M-DNL were 47.55 and 78.74 μmg/g, respectively. The kinetics study showed that the adsorption process followed the second order kinetic model. The SEM images demonstrated that after adsorption the dye was adsorbed onto the regenerated silk fibroin beads surface. The adsorbent was stable and active for up to five successive cycles. Regenerated silk fibroin beads showed to be an advantageous adsorbents in terms of availability, which is beneficial for the wastewater treatment.

A series of three chitosan-based magnetic composites was prepared through a simple coprecipitation method. It was investigated the influence of mass ratio between chitosan and magnetite on the physical and chemical properties of the composites in order to establish the optimum conditions for obtaining a composite with good adsorption capacity for Pb(II) and Cu(II) from mono and bicomponent aqueous solutions. It was found that the microspheres prepared using mass ratio chitosan / magnetite 1.25/1, having a saturation magnetization of 15 emu g--1, are the best to be used as adsorbent for the metal ions. The influence of different parameters such as initial pH values, contact time, initial concentration of metal ions, on the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) onto the chitosan-based magnetic adsorbent was investigated in details. The adsorption process fits the pseudo-second-order kinetic model in both mono and bicomponent systems, and the maximum adsorption capacities calculated on the basis of the Langmuir model were 79.4 mg g--1 for Pb(II) and 48.5 mg g--1 for Cu(II) in monocomponent systems, while in bicomponent systems were 88.3 and 49.5 mg g--1, respectively. The results revealed that the as prepared chitosan-based magnetic adsorbent can be an effective and promising adsorbent for Pb(II) and Cu(II) from mono and bicomponent aqueous solutions.

An improvement in the adsorption capacity of naturally available bentonite towards water pollutants such as Methylene Blue dye (MBD) is certainly needed. For this purpose, sodium bentonite was activated by two methods: (1) treatment with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) as an ionic surfactant and (2) thermal treatment in an oven operated at 850°C. Batch adsorption tests were carried out on removing MBD from aqueous solution using the above-mentioned bentonites. It was found that the effectiveness of bentonites towards MBD removal was in the following order: thermal-bentonite > SDS-bentonite > natural bentonite. X-Ray diffraction analysis showed that an increase in the microscopic bentonite platelets on treatment with SDS was the reason behind the higher uptake of MBD. An increase in sorbent concentration or initial pH value of the solutions resulted in a greater removal of MBD from the solution. An increase in temperature led to an increase in MBD uptake by the bentonites studied in this work. The Freundlich isotherm model was employed and found to represent the experimental data well.

This study examined and compared the ability of chicken feathers, human hair and animal horns, as keratin-composed biosorbents, for the removal of Zn2+ and Cu2+ ions from single metal ion aqueous solutions under different operating conditions. The three biosorbents investigated in this study were all capable of adsorbing Zn2+ and Cu2+ ions from aqueous solutions. The biosorbent showing the highest uptake of Zn2+ and Cu2+ ions was animal horns. Chicken feathers showed a higher Cu2+ ion uptake and a lower Zn2+ ion compared to human hair. Increasing the initial concentration of Zn2+ or Cu2+ ions, or increasing the initial pH value, increased the metal ion uptake. Such uptake decreased when the temperature was raised from 25°C to 50°C for all adsorbent/metal ion combinations except for Zn2+ ion/human hair where the uptake increased with temperature. It was demonstrated that the addition of NaCl salt to the metal ion solution depressed the metal ion uptake. The Freundlich isotherm model was found to be applicable to the adsorption data for Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions.

Rotating systems suffer from lateral and torsional vibrations which have detrimental effect on the roto-dynamic performance. Many available technologies such as vibration isolators and vibration absorbers deal with the torsional vibrations to a certain extent, however passive isolators and absorbers find less application when the input conditions are dynamic. The present work discusses use of a smart material called as Magneto Rheological Elastomer (MRE), whose properties can be changed based on magnetic field input, as a potential isolator for torsional vibrations under dynamic loading conditions. Carbonyl Iron Particles (CIP) of average size 5 μm were mixed with RTV Silicone rubber to form the MRE. The effect of magnetic field on the system parameters was comprehended under impulse loading conditions using a custom built in-house system. Series arrangement of accelerometers were used to differentiate between the torsional and the bending modes of vibration of the system. Impact hammer tests were carried out on the torsional system to study its response, in the presence and absence of magnetic field. The tests revealed a shift in torsional frequency in the presence of magnetic field which elucidates the ability of MRE to work as a potential vibration isolator for torsional systems.

Diatomite was modified by microwave treatment to increase their utilization value, using modified diatomite to treat ammonia-nitrogen wastewater. The experiment indicated that adsorption process of modification of the modified time by microwaves and microwave power is the impact of ammonia adsorption of the main factors. Through modification experiments by raising the capacity of diatomite adsorption ammonia nitrogen, adsorption of ammonia nitrogen increase over one time. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were used to fit and the experimental results show that the modified diatomite adsorption onto ammonia nitrogen accords with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacities are 5.81083mg/g.

Heavy metals are the most dangerous inorganic pollutants Due to their bioaccumulation and their nonbiodegradability, for this, several studies have focused on the recovery of these metals from water using different techniques. In this context, our study consists of evaluating an efficient and eco-friendly pathway of competitive recovery of heavy metals (Cd, Cr and As) from aqueous solutions by adsorption using raw rock. This adsorbent was characterized before and after the adsorption process by several techniques. The multi-metals adsorption process in the batch mode was undertaken to evaluate the effect of adsorbent mass, contact time, pH, Temperature, and initial heavy metals concentration. The kinetic data were analyzed using the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion kinetic models. According to the modeling of the experimental results, the adsorption kinetics of heavy metals were adapted to the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption isotherms were evaluated by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The experimental isotherm data of heavy metals were better fitted with the Langmuir model rather than Freundlich isotherm models. The maximum experimental adsorption capacities (Qmax) predicted by the Langmuir model are 15.23 mg/g for Cd (II), 17.54 mg/g for Cr (VI) and 16.36 mg/g for As (III). The values of thermodynamic parameters revealed that the heavy metals adsorption was exothermic, favorable, and spontaneous in nature. The desorption process of heavy metals showed that this raw rock had excellent recycling capacity. Based on the results, these untreated clays can be used as inexpensive and environmentally friendly adsorbents to treat water contaminated by heavy metals.
