This paper presents a study on the leakage characteristics of a labyrinth piston compressor. A computational fluid dynamics model was applied to predict the effects of different structural parameters of the labyrinth seal on the sealing performance. The velocity field through the sealing clearance and labyrinth cavity was demonstrated and analyzed. An experimental rig was built to validate the simulation model, and the results of the simulation and experimental data showed a good agreement. The effects of the cavity width, cavity depth, tooth thickness, and clearance of the seal on the leakage characteristics were discussed in detail. The results showed that, except for the significant influence of the labyrinth clearance, d/δ (the ratio of cavity depth to labyrinth clearance) should be bigger than 2.7 to achieve the minimum leakage flow, and the effect of the varied cavity width can be ignored. Moreover, when the piston length and cavity width remain constant, the thinner the tooth thickness, the greater the number of labyrinth cavities that can be arranged, and the higher the sealing performance achieved.

Leakage flow plays an important role on the performance evaluation of hydraulic components. Leakage flow induces adverse influences on many practical industrial applications. For the sake of reducing friction and/or abrasion, most of the high-speed hydraulic components install some kind of non-contact seals to minimize leakage flow, the labyrinth seal is the most popular one. This research is to investigate the leakage flow of labyrinth seals in hydraulic components by using numerical analysis technique. The parameters investigated in this study are cavity number, cavity width, cavity depth, cavity gap, and Reynolds number. The traditional rectangular cavity is considered in this research. It shows that cavity width is about 20∼30 times of clearance, cavity depth is about 3∼5 times of clearance, cavity gap is greater than 50 times of clearance, cavity depth to width ratio is about 0.15∼0.25, and cavity gap to width ratio is greater than 2.5 have better sealing capability.

The ground structure, elastic and electronic properties of several phases of NbN are determined based on ab initio total-energy calculations within the framework of density functional theory. Among the five crystallographic structures that have been investigated, the hexagonal phases have been found to be more stable than the cubic ones. The calculated equilibrium structural parameters are in good agreement with the available experimental results. The elastic constants of five structures in NbN are calculated, which are in consistent with the obtained theoretical and experimental data. The corresponding Debye temperature and elastic ansitropies are also obtained. The Debye temperature of NbN in various structures consistent with available experimental and theoretical data, in which the Debye temperature of δ-NbN is highest. The anisotropies of ZB-NbN, NaCl-NbN, CsCl-NbN gradually increases. For hexagonal structure, the anisotropies of ε-NbN are stronger than that of δ-NbN. The electronic structures of NbN under pressure are investigated. It is found that NbN have metallization and the hybridizations of atoms in NbN under pressure become stronger.

In this paper, the bionic membrane structure is introduced to improve the aerodynamic performance of nano rotor at the low Reynolds number. The aerodynamic characteristics of nano rotor made of hyperelastic material as membrane blades are studied. Firstly, based on the hyperelastic constitutive model, a finite element model of the rotor is established and compared with the results of the modal test to verify the accuracy of the model. Then the computational fluid dynamics model of membrane nano rotor is established which combined with the finite element model. The aerodynamic characteristics of the membrane rotor under hovering conditions are studied using fluid–structure interaction method. It is found that the calculation results matched well with the experiment results. The design of the structural parameters such as the membrane proportion, shape, and position of the membrane rotor is optimized. The influence of each parameter on the aerodynamic performance of the rotor is obtained. Under certain structural conditions, the performance can be effectively improved, which provides a new idea for the design of the nano rotor.

The bulk and surface acoustic wave velocities of Aluminum phosphide (AlP) semiconducting material under pressure up to 9.5 GPa were studied. The structural parameters and the elastic constants used in this work are taken from our previous paper published in J. Optoelec-tron. Adv. M. 16, 207 (2014). The results obtained at zero-pressure are analyzed and compared with other data of the literature. In addition, the acoustic Grüneisen parameter and the Vickers and Knoop microhardness are predicted and analyzed in detail. Our calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental and other theoretical data of literature.

Abstract Based on the study of leakage characteristics of labyrinth seal structure (LSS), a new type of combined seal structure (CSS) consisting of the labyrinth structure and the nozzle structure has been proposed. The sealing characteristics of CSS and LSS are compared by means of numerical simulation and experiments, and the effects of the internal resistance of the device, structural geometric parameters and other factors on the leakage characteristics of CSS are studied. The results illustrate the following conclusions: (a) When the inlet flow is 12 m3/h and the internal resistance of the device is 2000–4000 Pa, the leakage rate of CSS decreases by 30%–40% in comparison with that of LSS, which indicates that the performance of CSS is much better than that of LSS. (b) The leakage rate increases as the internal resistance of the device increases. When the internal resistance of the device increases from 2000 Pa to 8000 Pa, the leakage rate increases from 26% to 72%. (c) When the internal resistance of the device is constant, the larger the inlet flow, the smaller the leakage rate. (d) The choice of nozzle radius in structural geometric parameters is more important for the leakage rate than the tooth height and teeth numbers. When the nozzle radius decreases, ΔPAB (pressure difference between the labyrinth structure and the nozzle structure) and the leakage rate decrease accordingly.

Abstract In order to accurately predict the hysteresis characteristics of finger seal, the minimum hysteresis which can directly reflect the hysteresis of finger seal is proposed to characterize the hysteresis of finger seal. The mathematical model for calculating the minimum hysteresis of finger seal is established, the correction coefficient in the mathematical model is determined, and the mathematical model is verified by experiments. The influence of the structure and working condition parameters of finger laminates on the hysteresis characteristics is studied based on the modified calculation model, and the rule of influence is obtained in the end. Research results show that the maximum error between the leakage characteristics numerical calculation of finger seal base on modified calculation model and the experiment results is 7.64%, and the mathematical model of the minimum hysteresis is reasonable and reliable. The descending order of influence degree of structural parameters on the hysteresis characteristics of finger seal is: thickness of each finger laminate, finger repeat angle, arc radius of the finger beam arcs‘ centers, diameter of the finger base circle, width of the interstice between fingers, arc radius of finger beam. The research results provide a theoretical basis for further research on the influence of hysteresis on the finger seal leakage characteristics and the optimal design of finger seal structure.

The seal is the key part of the cone bit. To reduce the failure probability, a new seal was designed and studied. The sealing performance and structure optimization of the X-O composite seal was analyzed and compared by finite-element analysis. The stress and contact pressure were analyzed to establish the main structural parameters that affect sealing performance and the direction of the structural optimization. By optimizing these structural parameters, including the height, and the radial and axial arc radii, an optimized structure is obtained. The results show that (1) the X-O composite seal can meet the seal requirement, the excessive height of the X seal ring is the root cause of the uneven distribution of stress, pressure, and distortion. (2) A new seal structure is obtained, the distribution of pressure and stress is reasonable and even, and the values of stress and pressure are reduced to avoid distortion and reduce the wear. Finally, the field test results of the X-O composite seal of cone bit showed that the service life of the bit bearing increased by 16% on average and the drilling efficiency increased by 11% on average compared with the original cone bit with the O seal ring.

In the reciprocating labyrinth piston compressor, the characteristic of the internal leakage is crucial for the leakage management and performance improvement of the compressor. However, most of the published studies investigated the rotor-stator system, and those who study the reciprocating piston-cylinder system basically focus on the effects of the geometrical parameters. These conclusions could not directly be applied to predict the real-time leakage flow rate through the labyrinth seal because of the fast reciprocating motion of the piston, which will cause continually pressure change in two compression chambers, and then the pressure fluctuation will affect the flow through the labyrinth seal. A transient simulation model employing the multiscale dynamic mesh, which considers the effect of the reciprocating motion of the piston in the cylinder, is established to identify the characteristics of the internal leakage. This model was verified by a specially designed compressor, and the influence of various parameters was analyzed in detail. The sealing performance decreased linearly with the increase in the pressure ratio, and higher pressure inlet leads to higher leakage flow under the same pressure ratio. The labyrinth seal performance positively correlated to the increase of the rotational speed. Leakage characteristics of five working mediums were carried out, and the results indicated that the relative leakage decreased with an increase in the relative molecular mass. From this study, the realistic internal leakage flow rate under different operating parameters in the reciprocating labyrinth piston compressor could be predicated.

AbstractWe present results from a new wide-field study of the NGC 5128 globular cluster system. We have obtained new high resolution images with the Magellan 6.4m + IMACS camera. Our images cover an area of 1.2x1.2 sq. degrees and have a seeing of 0.45″. This allows us to not only resolve most of the globular clusters (GCs) but also derive their structural parameters. These are combined with existing Washington photometry in order to select by metallicity. We present here results for a subsample of 359 GCs which includes all currently confirmed GC members of the system. Our derived sizes are in very good agreement with those derived from ACS data. We find, as expected, that the metal-rich GCs in the inner regions (r < 10′) are 26% smaller than their metal-poor components, but in the outer region this normal trend is reversed. We compare our GCs to previous results for GCs, UCDs, etc. in the luminosity - size plane and find substantial overlap between different types of objects, indicating more of a continuum in these properties.
