Push plate test is a powerful tool to evaluate the interfacial bond performance of China railway track structure type-II slab ballastless track structure (CRTS II SBTS). However, there is still a lack of theoretical explanation of the push plate test. In this paper, a linear proportional distribution method is proposed in terms of a series of analytical formulas to describe the interfacial force-displacement variation of CRTS II SBTS in different damage stages of the horizontal push plate test. The force-displacement relationship established by the linear proportional distribution method agrees well with that observed in full-scale test. The horizontal push plate test is then simulated, in which a bilinear cohesive zone model (CZM) was adopted to simulate the interface within track structure. The parameters of the CZM are calculated based on the force-displacement curves obtained from scale push plate test. Particularly, the normal cohesive parameters are determined based on the scale vertical push plate test instead of the traditional splitting tensile test. The simulation proves that both the maximum affected length in the undamage stage and the maximum damaged length in the damage stage depend rather on the interfacial stiffness and the material parameters of SBTS than the horizontal load. These two lengths given by the simulation are close to those defined by the proposed linear proportional distribution method. This indicates the reliability of the proposed method and the capability of scale push plate test in determining cohesive parameters.

To probe into the time-dependent behaviour of the ballastless track–bridge structural system under train load, based on the import of the static and fatigue damage constitutive model of materials to simulate damage deterioration of the structural system and interface cohesive zone model to the interface layer, a three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model of the China Railway Track System Type II (CRTS II) ballastless track–bridge structural system was established using the equivalent static method. Then, using this model, we developed the numerical simulation analysis of the influence law of material damage deterioration on structural system performance under train load and revealed the fatigue evolution of the structural system. The results show that the beam remains in compressed status for the whole process, the track is in compression in the midspan and in tension at the beam end, and the tensile stress is larger near the shear groove under the double-track static load. Under the fatigue load, stiffness degradation of the structural system is not obvious, and integral rigidity of the structural system is dependent on the rigidity of the beam. Strength reduction of the materials caused stress redistribution of the structural system and had a larger effect on the stress of each layer of track structure than on the stress on the beam. The fatigue degradation of the cement-emulsified asphalt (CA) mortar layer material has a significant impact on the structural system, which directly affects structural layer stress variation with the fatigue loading cycle.

The cast-in-place concrete base plate is a main member of the China Railway Track System (CRTS) III ballastless track structure that is prone to generating early transverse cracking. Such cracks can dramatically affect the performance and service life of the railway track structure. This study investigated the influence of temperature and moisture boundary conditions on early cracking behavior of the CRTS III base plate by using approaches of both in situ measurements and numerical modelling. In-site measurements of strain and temperature were made in four test series of CRTS III base plates under the same natural environmental condition but cured with different regimes, and a total of 96 measuring positions were monitored for up to 150 days. The results showed that the strain magnitude and distribution in the field base plate, the initial time at cracking, and the observed cracking pattern varied significantly between the different test series. In order to understand the mechanisms that create these transverse cracks and to provide guidelines for the current curing strategy during construction, the characteristics of temperature-induced and moisture-induced stresses were analyzed by using 3D numerical modelling and by considering early-age concrete creep properties, meteorological factors, and the influence from environmental boundary conditions. The calculated results revealed that early-age transverse cracking in CRTS III base plate depends more on drying shrinkage stress than temperature stress. By conducting this study, we expect to provide guidance for reducing or eliminating early cracks of CRTS III concrete base plate.

An effective deicing system is needed to be designed to conveniently remove ice from the surfaces of structures. In this paper, an ultrasonic deicing system for different configurations was estimated and verified based on finite element simulations. The research focused on deicing efficiency factor (DEF) discussions, prediction, and validations. Firstly, seven different configurations of Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) disk actuators with the same volume but different radius and thickness were adopted to conduct harmonic analysis. The effects of PZT shape on shear stresses and optimal frequencies were obtained. Simultaneously, the average shear stresses at the ice/substrate interface and total energy density needed for deicing were calculated. Then, a coefficient named deicing efficiency factor (DEF) was proposed to estimate deicing efficiency. Based on these results, the optimized configuration and deicing frequency are given. Furthermore, four different icing cases for the optimize configuration were studied to further verify the rationality of DEF. The effects of shear stress distributions on deicing efficiency were also analyzed. At same time, a cohesive zone model (CZM) was introduced to describe interface behavior of the plate and ice layer. Standard-explicit co-simulation was utilized to model the wave propagation and ice layer delamination process. Finally, the deicing experiments were carried out to validate the feasibility and correctness of the deicing system.

The mechanical performance of China Railway Track System type II (CRTS II) ballastless track suitable for High-Speed Railway (HSR) bridges is investigated in this project by testing a one-quarter-scaled three-span specimen under thermal loading. Stress analysis was performed both experimentally and numerically, via finite-element modeling in the latter case. The results showed that strains in the track slab, in the cement-emulsified asphalt (CA) mortar and in the track bed, increased nonlinearly with the temperature increase. In the longitudinal direction, the zero-displacement section between the track slab and the track bed was close to the 1/8L section of the beam, while the zero-displacement section between the track slab and the box girder bridge was close to the 3/8L section. The maximum values of the relative vertical displacement between the track bed and the bridge structure occurred in the section at three-quarters of the span. Numerical analysis showed that the lower the temperature, the larger the tensile stresses occurring in the different layers of the track structure, whereas the higher the temperature, the higher the relative displacement between the track system and the box girder bridge. Consequently, quantifying the stresses in the various components of the track structure resulting from sudden temperature drops and evaluating the relative displacements between the rails and the track bed resulting from high-temperature are helpful in the design of ballastless track structures for high-speed railway lines.

The interface crack of a slab track is a fracture of mixed-mode that experiences a complex loading–unloading–reloading process. A reasonable simulation of the interaction between the layers of slab tracks is the key to studying the interface crack. However, the existing models of interface disease of slab track have problems, such as the stress oscillation of the crack tip and self-repairing, which do not simulate the mixed mode of interface cracks accurately. Aiming at these shortcomings, we propose an improved cohesive zone model combined with an unloading/reloading relationship based on the original Park–Paulino–Roesler (PPR) model in this paper. It is shown that the improved model guaranteed the consistency of the cohesive constitutive model and described the mixed-mode fracture better. This conclusion is based on the assessment of work-of-separation and the simulation of the mixed-mode bending test. Through the test of loading, unloading, and reloading, we observed that the improved unloading/reloading relationship effectively eliminated the issue of self-repairing and preserved all essential features. The proposed model provides a tool for the study of interface cracking mechanism of ballastless tracks and theoretical guidance for the monitoring, maintenance, and repair of layer defects, such as interfacial cracks and slab arches.

Abstract In this article, mode II fracture toughness ( G IIc {G}_{\text{IIc}} ) of unidirectional E-glass/vinyl ester composites subjected to sulfuric acid aging is studied at two different temperatures (25 and 90°C). Specimens were manufactured using the hand lay-up method with the [ 0 ] 20 {{[}0]}_{20} stacking sequence. To study the effects of environmental conditions, samples were exposed to 30 wt% sulfuric acid at room temperature (25°C) for 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks. Some samples were also placed in the same solution but at 90°C and for 3, 6, 9, and 12 days to determine the interlaminar fracture toughness at different aging conditions. Fracture tests were conducted using end notched flexure (ENF) specimens according to ASTM D7905. The results obtained at 25°C showed that mode II fracture toughness increases for the first 2 weeks of aging and then it decreases for the last 8 weeks. It was also found that the flexural modulus changes with the same trend. Based on the results of the specimens aged at 90°C, a sharp drop in fracture toughness and flexural modulus with a significant decrease in maximum load have been observed due to the aging. Finite element simulations were performed using the cohesive zone model (CZM) to predict the global response of the tested beams.

Due to their superior mechanical and electrical properties, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have the potential to be used in many nano-/micro-electronic applications, e.g., through silicon vias (TSVs), interconnects, transistors, etc. In particular, use of MWCNT bundles inside annular cylinders of copper (Cu) as TSV is proposed in this study. However, the significant difference in scale makes it difficult to evaluate the interfacial mechanical integrity. Cohesive zone models (CZM) are typically used at large scale to determine the mechanical adherence at the interface. However, at molecular level, no routine technique is available. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations is used to determine the stresses that are required to separate MWCNTs from a copper slab and generate normal stress–displacement curves for CZM. Only van der Waals (vdW) interaction is considered for MWCNT/Cu interface. A displacement controlled loading was applied in a direction perpendicular to MWCNT's axis in different cases with different number of walls and at different temperatures and CZM is obtained for each case. Furthermore, their effect on the CZM key parameters (normal cohesive strength (σmax) and the corresponding displacement (δn) has been studied. By increasing the number of the walls of the MWCNT, σmax was found to nonlinearly decrease. Displacement at maximum stress, δn, showed a nonlinear decrease as well with increasing the number of walls. Temperature effect on the stress–displacement curves was studied. When temperature was increased beyond 1 K, no relationship was found between the maximum normal stress and temperature. Likewise, the displacement at maximum load did not show any dependency to temperature.
