Retention policy is an important guiding principle implemented by academic institution to promote students’ development, yet evidence is unable to disentangle how the effect of retention policy varies by the outcome in student’s intellect and morality. This study gathered the views and perspectives of students in relation to the retention policy of the college. This study used the qualitative-phenomenological method. Seven participants who gained the lowest general percentage average were purposively selected. In-depth interviews were conducted to obtain the pertinent information. Results revealed that retention policy was a source of encouragement for students to perform well and it was a necessity to develop and enhance students’ cognition. However, few students mentioned that the retention policy was a source of stress because they needed to comply with the standard requirements imposed by the college. They reiterated that the policy discriminated against slow-learners. The findings implicate that concrete actions may be done to address the misconception on the retention policy. Strong academic support and resources may be offered to address students’ needs especially to those who were at-risk. Retention policy will remain a challenge to all students if the academic institution is not fully equipped to respond to the needs of the students.

Introduction: Watson established the humanized care as a research phenomenon. It remains an ethical responsibility of nurses in the context of a transpersonal relationship that enhance the harmony and individuals integrity. Humanized care now faces a dilemma for a coexistence of diverse institutional, biomedical, administrative-economist and humanist axiological models. Objective: To know the perception of care, according to lived experience of three retired nurses, through authentic stories. Methodology: A qualitative, phenomenological study describes the experiences through authentic stories of three retired nurses obtained by in-depth interviews. Homogeneous sample selection criteria: nurses belonging to 3 generations removed extensive experience in closed care, participation in training students. Results: four categories were found concatenated with each other, which reconfigure the essence of care, emphasizing the integral character of the people and harmonizing the relational dimension with the technical-scientific dimension. Nurse as a caregiver; person as being of care; essence of care and vocational training. Conclusion: Knowing the perception of retired nurses, regarding care is a contribution for reflection. It is necessary to aim for humanized care, as an ethical duty of nurses. The intervention of various institutional axiological models weakens the possibility of guiding care towards humanization. There is a risk of fragmenting people, leaving aside individualized, warmth care, generated through a transpersonal relationship.

Sri Lankan Tamil refugees are among the largest group of refugees to resettle in Australia in the last decade. The aim of this study is to characterise the narratives of health-seeking among unwell Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Drawing on a qualitative, phenomenological perspective, we conducted in-depth interviews in Tamil and English with 12 participants who identified as being unwell for 6 months or more. Findings revealed three narratives of health-seeking: the search for the ‘good life’ that was lost or never experienced, seeking help from familiar channels in an unfamiliar context, and the desire for financial and occupational independence. These three narratives are undergirded by the metanarrative of a hope-filled recovery. These narratives of Tamil refugees’ lived experience provide new insights into clinical care and health service delivery.

IntroductionSuicide is a major public health issue. It is the leading cause of death among younger adults in the UK. Suicide by jumping is an uncommon method. About 23 people die each year by jumping from the cliffs at beachy head, Sussex. The beachy head chaplaincy established a suicide-prevention patrol at beachy head in August 2004. To date there have been no studies evaluating the impact of a suicide patrol as a prevention strategy. This study aimed to assess the impact of this suicide-prevention patrol.MethodsData from local and national official statistics was gathered to examine the overall suicide numbers and rates of suicide by jumping vs. other methods. This included an in-depth scrutiny of coroners’ data and reports from the beachy head chaplaincy.A qualitative, phenomenological approach using in-depth interviews was used to evaluate the “lived experiences” of members of the suicide-prevention patrol.ResultsThe statistics reveal unexpected and at times, conflicting, results which will be offered for discussion. The thematic analysis of the interviews reveals insights into the motivations for volunteering; how a faith-based patrol works; the physical and psycho-social impact of the work; volunteers’ stories; the centrality of God within their work and motivation. For copyright reasons full details of the analyses cannot be made available before the conference.DiscussionWe welcome an interactive discussion of the results.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Background: The adoption of Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FOSS) by institutions is significantly increasing, and so is the affiliated participation (the participation of industry engineers in open source communities as part of their jobs). Aims: This study is an investigation into affiliated participation in FOSS communities. So far, little is known about the affiliated participation and the forces that influence it, even though the FOSS innovation model is increasingly becoming a serious contender for the private investment model in many sectors. Method: We present a qualitative inquiry into affiliated participation in the Robot Operating System (ROS) and Linux Kernel communities, using twenty-one in-depth interviews and participatory observation data from twenty-nine community events. Results: Our results show that affiliated participation in these communities is constrained by several barriers: objections of senior management, protection of the company’s image, protection of intellectual property, undefined processes and policies, the high cost of participation, and unfamiliarity with the FOSS system. Conclusions: These barriers should be addressed in any organization considering using FOSS as a significant acquisition, distribution, and development strategy.

AbstractThe delivery of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in Bali has been fraught with difficulties, which have been exacerbated by the pandemic. This paper discusses 1) the realities of Islamic religious education in Bali, 2) the implementation of a special condition curriculum as a means of humanizing PAI education, and 3) the humanization of Islamic religious education in Bali during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research employed a qualitative phenomenological study, with data gathered through in-depth interviews with school principals, Islamic Religious Education teachers, and Muslim students' parents. The data is handled in stages that include data reduction, visualization, and verification. The findings indicate that: 1) The ratio of Islamic Religious Education teachers to pupils is imbalanced; some schools even lack Islamic Religious Education teachers, and numerous parents express dissatisfaction with online learning in PAI sessions. 2 ) Curriculum implementation for special/emergency situations; some schools have implemented it as a means of increasing learning effectiveness and efficiency, while others continue to use the national curriculum, despite teacher recognition that it is unproductive. 3) The special education curriculum is considered one of the first steps toward humanizing Religious Education Islam, which, in the face of poor online learning, must also be accompanied by teachers who are accessible to parents and students. How to Cite: Ramdhani, F. In the act of caring for and helping people in the end-of-life process, the professional who provides care and assistance must know how to maintain a relationship of closeness, empathy, and compassion for the pain and suffering of the person who is going to die. The objective was to understand, elaborate on, and characterize the key elements of end-of-life care of patients from a caregiver’s perspective through a qualitative phenomenological multicenter study. Participants were caregivers who had lost a family member at least 2 months but less than 2 years in the past. The techniques used were 5 discussion groups and 41 in-depth interviews, which included a total of 81 participants. To analyze the information, a protocol developed by Giorgi was followed. Two dimensions or units of meaning, with subdimensions, emerged: (1) Technical competence, with the subdimensions “Control of symptoms” and “Continuity of care,” and (2) Compassion, with the subdimensions “Effective/affective communication,” “Attitudes of kindness and closeness toward the patient and the family,” and “Generosity and personalized flexibility of care.” Assistance at the end of life requires the proper preparation of professionals who care for these patients, in addition to a compassionate attitude on the part of professionals and the people accompanying the dying person, that fosters a more humanized and dignified treatment in the dying process.

AbstractThis paper reports on a qualitative inquiry that investigated a group of Hong Kong university students’ perceptions of their linguistic identities in English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) communication. The participants of the study were proficient second language (L2) speakers of English who reported to have participated in intercultural ELF communication on a regular basis. By analyzing data gathered via two rounds of in-depth interviews, the study revealed that these participants did not evaluate their “non-native” status negatively but embraced their identities as legitimate and empowered speakers of English in ELF interactions. In addition, they validated their identities as multilingual, multicompetent, and translingual speakers of English with the ability to draw upon a diverse set of multilingual resources flexibly in ELF contexts. The analysis also found that these participants’ linguistic identities were constructed and negotiated in relation to the perceived linguistic competence of other ELF speakers, especially L2 speakers of other cultural/national backgrounds. This paper sheds light on the complexity of linguistic identities in ELF contexts and contributes to the growing ELF research in the Asian context.
