The incorporation of E-learning in both private and public tertiary education can help expedite the learning process. The utilization of fast-paced technology with E-learning also allows for a more flexible and convenient learning process. E-learning platforms can be accessed anywhere as long as there is an internet connection, including at home, the workplace, restaurants or while travelling. This allows for the benefit of distance learning. As such, the current study aims to examine the factor effectiveness of E-learning based on three variables, namely technology, instructors’ characteristics and students’ characteristics and their impact on distance learning. The education system has greatly evolved from the use of apparatus such as chalk and blackboards to the modern use of projectors to conduct lessons. In the current age, E-learning will have an effect on both instructors and teaching technology, aside from the students themselves. As an example, students are expected to know how to utilize these systems in their lessons, instructors must receive training in E-learning systems management and in terms of technology, the E-learning systems must be updated and operated using the most recent upgrades. E-learning is also cost-efficient, less time consuming and reduces the burden on both students and educators.

Purpose – Current e-learning platforms are based on relational database management systems (RDBMS) and are well suited for handling structured data. However, it is expected from e-learning solutions to efficiently handle unstructured data as well. The purpose of this paper is to show an alternative to current solutions for unstructured data management. Design/methodology/approach – Current repository-based solution for file management was compared to MongoDB architecture according to their functionalities and characteristics. This included several categories: data integrity, hardware acquisition, processing files, availability, handling concurrent users, partition tolerance, disaster recovery, backup policies and scalability. Findings – This paper shows that it is possible to improve e-learning platform capabilities by implementing a hybrid database architecture that incorporates RDBMS for handling structured data and MongoDB database system for handling unstructured data. Research limitations/implications – The study shows an acceptable adoption of MongoDB inside a service-oriented architecture (SOA) for enhancing e-learning solutions. Practical implications – This research enables an efficient file handling not only for e-learning systems, but also for any system where file handling is needed. Originality/value – It is expected that future single/joint e-learning initiatives will need to manage huge amount of files and they will require effective file handling solution. The new architecture solution for file handling is offered in this paper: it is different from current solutions because it is less expensive, more efficient, more flexible and requires less administrative and development effort for building and maintaining.

Globalization makes cultural diversity a pertinent factor in e-learning, as distributed learning teams with mixed cultural backgrounds become commonplace in most e-learning programs, which can be study-based (schools and universities) or work-based (training units) (Zhang & Zhou, 2003). In these programs, collaborative learning is supported via computermediated communication technologies and instructional technologies. The primary goal of enhancing learning with technology aids, aligning with the goal of education at all levels, is to engage students in meaningful learning activities, which require learners to construct knowledge by actively interpreting, acquiring, and analyzing their experience (Alavi, Marakas, & Yoo, 2002). In accordance, meaningful learning requires knowledge to be constructed by the learners but not by the teachers. In this regard, collaborative learning, an activity where two or more people work together to create meaning, explore a topic, or improve skills, is considered superior to other individualistic instructional methods (Lerouge, Blanton, & Kittner, 2004). The basic premise underlying this is the socio-learning theory, which advocates that learning and development occur during cooperative socialization among peers and emerge through shared understandings (Leidner & Jarvenpaa, 1995). This highlights the criticality of the communication and collaboration pertaining to an individual’s learning process. Since culture reflects the way one learns (Hofstede, 1997; Vygotsky, 1978), group members’ cultural backgrounds play a significant role in affecting the collaborative learning process (Chang & Lim, 2005). Language, cognitive style, and learning style are some aspects of culture that concern collaborative learning in the short term. Groups which have members of different cultural backgrounds are expected to be availed a wider variety of skills, information, and experiences that could potentially improve the quality of collaborative learning (Rich, 1997). In contrast, a group comprising members of similar backgrounds is vulnerable to the “groupthink” syndrome; when the syndrome operates, members could ignore alternatives, resulting in a deterioration of efficiency in making a group decision (Janis, 1982). Accordingly, it is conceivable that groups formed by members of different cultural backgrounds are inherently less prone to the “groupthink” syndrome. However, the advantages of cultural diversity in achieving meaningful collaborative learning are not easily realized, as the basic modes of communication may vary among different cultures and, in consequence, communication distortion often occurs (Chidambaram, 1992). Collaborative learning systems (CLS) are being increasingly researched owing to their potential capabilities and the associated new opportunities in supporting collaborative learning, in particular for distributed groups involving members of different cultural backgrounds (Alavi & Leidner, 2001). Collaborative learning systems provide the necessary medium to support interaction among learners, and therefore modify the nature and the ef- ficiency of the collaborative learning activities (Mandryk, Inkepn, Bilezikjian, Klemmer, & Landay, 2001). The current article looks into how collaborative learning systems may better accommodate cultural diversity in e-learning groups. In addition, this article discusses pertinent issues regarding the role of a leader in building the common ground among learners in order to maximize the potential of collaborative learning systems when cultural diversity is present.

As E-learning is gaining popularity in higher education, its evaluation becomes more critical than ever, to ensure the achievement of intended learning outcome. The effectiveness of E-learning system evaluation under current practices, however, remains questionable. One reason for such uncertainty is the lack of direct measurement while learning occurs since most evaluation data is collected after the learning process. Thus this chapter proposes an integrated evaluation approach for E-learning systems based on Cognitive Load Theory and grounded in the 4C/ID-model. Both direct and indirect measurements will be deployed in the integrated approach in the context of cognitive load. Furthermore all evaluation data can be translated into practical E-learning design solutions by triangulating with the 4C/ID-model. This chapter also suggests that future evaluation framework on E-learning should include factors from attitudinal and social aspects of learning process.

The current state of the economy has created an increased pressure on companies to establish more efficient training programs, resulting in an upswing in e-learning and distance learning programs. With this increased demand for e-learning/distance learning training, the need for more interactive training that goes beyond the traditional webinar and video conference has also been identified. The literature regarding virtual learning platforms suggests that the use of simulations, both asynchronous and synchronous, holds great potential for enhancing the knowledge and skills of learning in a myriad of fields. Although these platforms are proving to have great benefits, they also are showing some challenges and barriers to overcome. After a review of current research, Cicatelli Associates, Inc. (CAI), conducted an internal feasibility study to determine the feasibility of the use of virtual worlds in training healthcare and health care service provision staff in general counseling skills and communications skills. After examining, both the strengths and the challenges of utilizing this method for training it was determined that several barriers exist that currently prohibit the organization from using this method. These barriers include access to appropriate computer systems, as well as the lack of fine or micro non-verbal gestures in virtual worlds.

The expansion of computer networks has at the same time given impetus to the distance learning environments. E-learning systems are also advanced and more efficient. However, these platforms offer such complex teaching functionalities that designers find themselves poorly equipped to succeed in their engineering processes. This article presents a tool that makes it easier for designers to produce educational content according to the Competency-Based Approach (CBA). We propose an implementation of the CBA after its modeling via ontology. Our module can be grafted to any author system oriented pedagogy based skills. We have advocated for Service for Oriented Architecture as a software solution to model our business process that consists of a set of interconnected services that are modeled and implemented. The proposed system is the result of a coordina-tion of, services, incorporating the order of competences explained by a distance education, which integrates and interacts according to an orchestration plan.
