Research into the design, delivery, support, and administration of Online Distance Learning (ODL) programmes in higher education is developing but still nascent with theories and discourses from many areas of traditional education being examined and developed to address the particular affordances of online education. Whilst debate continues about the procurement of and best application of educational technologies and systems, one aspect of the debate seems clear, that the technology and content alone is not “e-learning.” Directing someone to an online repository does not mean learning will necessarily take place. Whilst the technology and the content are essential, both are important only insofar as the affordances they provide for learning to take place. Using empirical evidence, this chapter argues that the actions of the tutor are therefore pivotal in an educational environment where the learning process is directed at more than simply accessing information.

In an effort to suppress the spread of the Covid-19 virus, Kemdikbud took a policy to close schools during the Covid-19 pandemic. All schools that initially did conventional learning by face-to-face, now learning is done from home through distance learning or online system, no exception pondok pesantren. The purpose of this research is to find out the distance learning process conducted by Pondok Pesantren Darunnajah 2 Cipining, Bogor. This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative approach. Based on research can be known that in learning, pesantren use various platforms such as google classroom, google meet, whatsapp, and smart system. In this online learning, the materials and tasks given are quite diverse, although there are no tasks in the form of discussions so that the interaction between students and students and teachers cannot be done. All parties, both students, teachers, and parents experienced a culture shock with the existence of this distance learning system / online. Distance learning /online also gives rise to physical distancing. Religious activities that are usually carried out in pesantren are now carried out at home and all must be reported to the teacher or room guardian via whatsapp. The challenges faced in online learning include a lack of interaction between teachers and students, a network that arises to sink, quotas that are rapidly depleted and expensive, and a lack of active participation of students. Therefore, the readiness of both teachers and students, as well as motivation from parents can also support the implementation of this distance learning process. In addition, the provision of quotas is also important to support the online learning process carried out by pesantren.

The Hungarian government prescribed distance learning for higher education institutions due to the spread of the coronavirus epidemic which was challenging at the Hungarian Dance Academy. The development of movement skills was difficult without personal presence, no common e-learning practice had existed in the institution before the pandemic. In the research we explored the distance learning and teaching practices developed at the theoretical and dance courses at the Hungarian Dance Academy, as well as the experiences of both teachers and students during the 3 and a half months. Instructors (n=65) and students (n=240) completed an online questionnaire on digital tool use and course management, furthermore 13 of the responding instructors also shared their experiences in a structured interview. Most of the instructors welcomed everything they could benefit from distance learning (e.g. creating new curricula, learning about new digital tools, improving relationships with students), but understandably, online distance learning of dance was considered impossible by many. Some students enjoyed distance learning because of their own schedule and the convenience of their home, but there were many critical remarks about its methods.

The era of COVID-19 transforms the traditional classroom into the fully online distance learning system. This new learning mode presents new challenges to both the lecturer and students at the College of Teacher Training and Education (STKIP) Muhammadiyah Barru, Indonesia. This research focused on identifying the types of online platforms applied in distance learning of paragraph writing course, the students’ behaviors and challenges toward the learning system, and the English skill output of the learning process. The method was qualitative descriptive consisting of data collection and data analysis. The data was gathered by interviewing and observing the participants. The data was then analyzed by using distance learning concepts of Cynthia White. The result indicated that the class made use of Multi-synchronous distance learning. However, they preferred to make use the asynchronous distance learning due to the flexibility of time and space, also its cost-effective. Besides, the research found that the students fast adapted to the new learning context for the ability to operate technology, yet they did not fully understand their roles and responsibilities during the learning process. Moreover, as the challenges of self-independent demand, self-awareness and management and the slow internet access of their isolated areas, most of the students did not show satisfied output in writing English paragraph.

Prevention practitioners are required to develop their skills and competencies in response to recent advances in prevention science. It is thus important to develop training programmes which ensure the development of a prevention workforce. Aiming to respond to this need, the Specialised Training Course in Addictions Prevention is based on the European Universal Prevention Curriculum (EUPC) and delivered online. In view of this being the first online course based on the EUPC, the absence of training programmes for prevention practitioners in Portugal, and the significance of international guidelines in these two domains (prevention and online distance learning), it was considered important to create a framework which supports the evaluation and monitoring of the course. This paper presents a framework for the evaluation of the specialised training course in prevention based on two models: the European Drug Prevention Quality Standards, and the adaptation of the European Standards and Guidelines to digital programmes and courses – Considerations for Quality Assurance of E-learning Provision. Given the importance of quality assurance in contemporary society, the framework presented in this paper is a tool that may be useful for evaluating other online distance learning programmes which focus on the professional development of prevention practitioners.

The article presents a reconstruction of crisis coping strategies adopted by academics during the changes in higher education resulting from the SARS-Cov-2 virus pandemic. This analysis is part of a wider research project entitled “Academic Education during the Covid-19 Pandemic.” In our research, we used a focus interview to learn about e-learning experiences of lecturers and students. Due to limitations in face-to-face meetings, the interviews were conducted via the Microsoft Teams application, which significantly improved the process of consolidating the empirical material. Academic teachers from various research centers in Poland participated in the research. An important point in the team data analysis was the clear presence of community in the strategies undertaken by online distance learning at universities.

One of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education sector in Indonesia is the closure of schools. To ensure education services continue, the government issued a policy of learning home (Belajar dari Rumah/BDR) through online/distance learning. This paper aims to describe the implementation of the BDR for learning quality. To that aim, we have conducted telephone interviews with school principals and teachers from frontier, outermost and remote regions (3T) and non-3T regions. By looking at demographics perspective, implementation of BDR has six variations are a) learning by interactive virtual classroom b) learning assignment by social media c) learning in teacher's or student's home d) learning by using TV/radio e) learning by ‘mouth-to-mouth’ messages and f) learning stopped. The variations generate different quality of learning and will produce an increasing education inequality in Indonesia.
