Abstract 260: Pedometer-assessed Workplace Walking Program Improves Cardio-Metabolic Profile Among the University’s Workforce

Introduction- The cost of physical inactivity in the workplace setting is significant. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between pedometer-assessed physical activity with cardio-metabolic outcomes such as, body weight, blood glucose levels, lipid profile among the University’s academic faculty and staff. Methods- Twenty nine (9M/20F, 50±6yrs; BMI 28.4±4.2 kg/m 2 ) apparently healthy participants who were sedentary, non-smoking, non-diabetic, free of cardiovascular disease, not on antihypertensive or cholesterol medications were recruited from the University workforce. Fasting blood glucose and lipid profile were analyzed using Cholestech LDX analyzer, before and after intervention. Pedometer settings were personalized and participants were instructed to maintain their regular diet during the study period. Participants completed a pedometer-based walking intervention (step-goal: 10,000-steps/day, 5-days/week, 4-weeks). Results- Baseline vs. post-intervention (Mean±SD) for total cholesterol (202.2±40.1 vs. 193.1±42.1 mg/dl; p≤0.05), blood glucose (101.2±8.7 vs. 97.8±8.9; g/dl; p=0.032), systolic blood pressure (BP; 120.7±11.1 vs. 115.1±11.1 mmHg; p=0.003) and diastolic BP (78.6±6.6 vs. 73.8±5.5 mmHg; p<0.0001) were statistically significant. Step-counts significantly increased from baseline to post-intervention (9057.7±3588.9 vs.10319.2±3177; p=0.021). Change in step-count (wk 1 to wk 4) were associated with changes in blood glucose (r=-0.39; p=0.048); diastolic BP (r=-0.43; p=0.029) and BMI (r=-0.45; p=0.022). Conclusion- Our preliminary study modestly increased workday walking by ~12% over four weeks, and significantly improved the cardio-metabolic outcomes among the University workforce. This suggests that, workplace physical activity programs could contribute to the achievement of 10,000 steps/day, which might maximize physical activity participation.

Objective: The objective of the present study was to determine the changes in the glucose level and lipid profile in patients withpolycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Study Design: Descriptive study. Place and Duration of the study: This study was conducted atInstitute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, The University of Lahore from June 2009 to June 2010. Patients and Methods: Total 50patients with PCOS were included and 50 age-matched control subjects were also selected for comparison. Their glucose levels and lipidprofile were assessed using commercial kits. The data thus obtained was subjected to statistical analysis. Results: Significant differences(P<0.05) in fasting blood glucose level and individual parameters of lipid profile were observed in women with PCOS. A higher prevalence ofhypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, higher LDL, lower HDL and higher fasting blood glucose levels was explored in PCOS womenthan controls. Conclusions: Abnormal glucose level and lipid profile in PCOS women showed that these women are at an increased risk ofdeveloping diabetes and subsequently cardiovascular diseases.

Aim.To study the associations between blood lipid profile and blood glucose levels in men with coronary heart disease (CHD), stable effort angina (SEA), metabolic syndrome (MS), and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM-2).Material and methods.The study included 82 men (mean age 50,5±0,9 years) with CHD, Functional Class I–III SEA, MS, and DM-2. The following lipid profile parameters were assessed: total cholesterol (TCH), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL–CH), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL–CH), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL–CH), atherogenic index (AI), and triglyceride index (TGI), together with fasting blood glucose.Results.There were positive (direct) associations between higher levels (>90th percentile) of lipid profile parameters (TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL– CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and blood glucose, as well as between lower levels (≤10th percentile) of lipid profile parameters (TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL– CH, AI, TGI) and blood glucose. At the same time, there were negative (inverse) associations between lower lipid levels (≤10th percentile of TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL–CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and higher glucose levels (>90th percentile), as well as between higher lipid levels (>90th percentile of TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL–CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and lower glucose levels (≤10th percentile).Conclusion.Dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia demonstrate synergetic proatherogenic effects in patients with CHD, SEA, MS, and DM-2, as suggested by significant heterogeneous (direct and inverse) associations between lipid profile parameters and fasting blood glucose. The results obtained provide an opportunity for the assessment of risk levels, prognosis, and need for pharmacological prevention and treatment in patients with combined cardiovascular pathology.

Background: The positive effects of blood glucose levels should be demonstrated in healthy or type 2 diabetic individuals who can be recommended to consume macronutrients (protein + fat) with carbohydrates. Therefore, at the end of the research planned with the amount of carbohydrates and fats that can be consumed in a meal, we aimed to recommend the consumption of food with high protein content egg together with the carbohydrate source. Methods: The study was carried out from Nov 2017 to Apr 2018 by looking at fasting blood glucose levels using feeding 2 different test foods on a minimum of 8 h of fasting in the Haliç University Sutluce Campus, Istanbul, Turkey. Before and after the carbohydrate and carbohydrate + protein source, blood glucose was measured from the fingertip for 3 days in 30 min, 60 min and 120 min periods. The average of 3 days was used in the analysis. Results: Blood glucose values were compared after individuals were given carbohydrate and carbohydrate + protein source. The mean blood glucose value 60 min after the carbohydrate administration was significantly higher than the average blood glucose value 60 min after the carbohydrate + protein administration (P= 0.006). Conclusion: A protein-containing diet positively affects the glycemia response and can recommend it. In individuals with diabetes, they should focus on the effects of proteins to achieve glycemia control.

Abstract: Blood glucose must be maintained in a constant concentration. Hyperglycemia, an increase of blood glucose level, can be a symptom of diabetes mellitus. One of the factors that affect the blood glucose level is physical activity. Low physical activity can be influenced by work. Sedentary lifestyle is identic with office workes. Office workers do not enough time to do physical activity. This study was aimed to describe the fasting blood glucose level among office workers. This was a descriptive study with a cross sectional design. Respondents were obtained by using total sampling method. There were 52 respondents in this study consisted of 25 males and 27 females. The results showed that 45 respondents (86.54%) had normal fasting blood glucose levels, 5 respondents (9.62%) had high fasting blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia), and 2 respondents (3.84%) had low fasting blood glucose levels (hypoglycemia). The maximum value was 243 mg/dL, the minimum value was 63 mg/dL, the median value was 83 mg/dL, the average value was 94.42 mg/dL, and standard of deviation was 37.85 mg/dL. Conclusion: Most office workers had normal blood glucose levels.Keywords: fasting blood glucose, office workers Abstrak: Glukosa darah dalam tubuh manusia harus dijaga dalam konsentrasi yang konstan. Kadar glukosa darah dalam tubuh yang meningkat (hiperglikemia) dapat menjadi gejala penyakit diabetes mellitus. Salah satu faktor yang memengaruhi kadar glukosa darah ialah aktivitas fisik. Aktivitas fisik yang kurang dapat dipengaruhi oleh pekerjaan. Pola hidup sedentary lifestyle identik dengan pekerja kantor dewasa ini. Pekerja kantor tidak memiliki waktu untuk terlibat dalam aktivitas fisik yang cukup. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui gambaran kadar glukosa darah puasa pada pekerja kantor. Jenis penelitian ialah deskriptif dengan desain potong lintang. Pemilihan responden dilakukan dengan metode total sampling. Responden terdiri dari 25 orang laki-laki s dan 27 orang perempuan. Hasil penelitian mendapatkan 45 responden (86,54%) memiliki kadar glukosa darah puasa normal, 5 responden (9,62%) memilki kadar glukosa darah puasa tinggi (hiperglikemia), dan 2 responden (3,84%) memilki kadar glukosa puasa rendah (hipoglikemia). Hasil pengukuran kadar glukosa darah puasa mendapatkan nilai maksimum 243 mg/dL, nilai minimum 63 mg/dL, nilai median 83 mg/dL, nilai rata-rata 94,42 mg/dL dan standar devisiasi 37,85 mg/dL. Simpulan: Sebagian besar pekerja kantor masih memiliki kadar glukosa darah puasa yang normal. Kata kunci: glukosa darah puasa, pekerja kantor

Background: Flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phenols, and vitamin-C contained in the Red Dragon fruit’s skin have a positive impact on glycemic control and lipid oxidation. This study aimed to determine the effect of Red Dragon fruit’s skin extract on reducing the fasting blood glucose (FBG) and improving the lipid profile of Wistar rats with diabetes and dyslipidemia. Methods: A randomized pre-test post-test control group experimental study was done on 22 male Wistar rats, aged 2-3 months that suffered from diabetes and dyslipidemia. Subjects were divided into the control group (given 2cc distilled water + 9 mg metformin) and the treatment group (given 160 mg red dragon fruit’s skin extract + 9 mg metformin) for 14 days. FBG and lipid profile measurements were done before and after the treatment. Data were analyzed using the compare mean test. Results: There was no significant mean difference of GDP between groups before (p=0.414) and after treatment (p=0.125), total cholesterol between groups before (p = 0.572) and after treatment (p=0.361), triglycerides between groups before (p=0.073) and after treatment (p=0.111). There was a significant mean difference of HDL between groups before (p=0.003) and after treatment (p=0.047), LDL between groups before (p=0.006) and after treatment (p=0.043). Although there were significant mean differences in HDL and LDL between groups before and after treatment, the pre-post treatment of HDL and LDL mean differences showed no significant mean difference (p=0.328 and p=0.704 consecutively). Conclusion: Red Dragon fruit’s skin extract treatment did not significantly reduce the mean FBG and lipid profile levels.

Introduction: The study was done at the aim to assess the functionality and viability of the β cells of the streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats model following repetitive dosage of administration of ethanolic extracts of Andrographis paniculata. Materials and Methods: The diabetic rats were treated with the extracts for fourteen days and at the dose given was 500 mg/kg twice daily. The assessments were made on fasting blood glucose, insulin, and immunohistochemical aspect of β cells before and after treatment. Results: The results showed that there was a significant reduction on fasting blood glucose levels in metformin, 95% and 50% ethanolic plant extracts-treated groups but on insulin level only 95% and 50% ethanolic extracts-treated groups gave a significant reduction (p<0.05). Immunohistochemical assessments revealed that all extract groups and metformin-treated were significantly increased in the population of β cells (p<0.01). Conclusion: This study revealed that the plant extracts showed an ability to promote the growth or rejuvenate the STZdestructed β cells and in turn lower the blood glucose level.

Background : Vitamin D and calcium have metabolic functions in the cells and insufficient intake has been proven to increase the risk factor for many chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus. Vitamin D and calcium both contribute in raising insulin secretion by regulating extracelullar calcium concentration and fluxing through cell membranes facilitated by calcium-sensing receptor. This study aimed to determine correlation between vitamin D and calcium intake with blood glucose levels in obese woman aged 45-55 years.Methods : Observational study with cross sectional design. Sixty subjects were selected using consecutive sampling. Food intakes were assessed by Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire, fasting blood glucose levels were measured by Glucose Oxidation method, and physical activities were determined by Long International Physical Activity Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using r Pearson and Rank-Spearman test. Results : Mean of fasting blood glucose levels was 90,4±37,22 mg/dL with average vitamin D was 4,1 ±2,23 μg, whereas calcium was 547,7±316,24 mg. All subjects had low vitamin D intake; 88,3% subjects had low calcium intake; 88,3% subjects had normal fasting blood glucose; and 11,7% subjects had hyperglycemia. There was no correlation between vitamin D (p = 0,295) and calcium  (p = 0,295) intake with fasting blood glucose levels. Intake of energy, carbohydrate, fat, protein, fiber  and physical activity also showed no corerelation with fasting blood glucose levels. Conclusion : There was no correlation of vitamin D and calcium intake with fasting blood glucose levels in obese woman aged 45-55 years.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a serious disorder of the brain and mind. People with schizophrenia are at high risk of developing type diabetes, due to overall poor physical health, poor health care, unhealthy lifestyles, and side effects of antipsychotic drugs. However, atypical antipsychotics have their deficiencies, because they can be associated with worsening cardiovascular risk factors such as weight gain, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia. AIM: Difference in fasting blood glucose levels in people with schizophrenia between before and after receiving aripiprazole treatment. METHODS: This research was conducted in November 2017-September 2018. This research was first conducted in Indonesia, especially North Sumatra. This research is a numerical comparative analytical study paired with an experimental design approach. The number of samples is 44 people. Blood samples are taken in schizophrenia patients before getting the drug, before meals and before activities, assessed fasting blood glucose levels before being treated with aripiprazole and after drug administration for 6 weeks. Data analysis used was a paired test for differences in fasting blood glucose levels in people with schizophrenia between before and after receiving aripiprazole treatment. RESULTS: Based on the demographic characteristics found the research subjects based on the most age group were 31-40 years age group of 30 subjects (68.2%), based on the highest level of education was high school by 26 subjects (59.1%), based on the most marital status was by status not married for 24 subjects (54.5%). It was found that the average blood glucose level before being given aripiprazole in schizophrenic patients was 89.23 ± 7.13. It was found that the average blood glucose level after being given aripiprazole in schizophrenic patients was 86.5 ± 10.1. It was found that there were no differences in blood glucose levels before and after being given aripiprazole in schizophrenic patients CONCLUSION: There was no difference in blood glucose levels before and after being given aripiprazole in schizophrenic patients with p-value (0.078).
