SEM study of a topotype population of Paracrobeles psammophilus Navarro & Lluch, 1999 (Rhabditida: Cephalobidae) and its taxonomic implications

Summary Paracrobeles psammophilus from the type locality is redescribed based on SEM studies. In addition, material of P. psammophilus previously described from Sicily (Italy) is revised. Species of Paracrobeles are analysed and form two morphological groups: the laterellus-group with three species (P. kelsodunensis, P. laterellus and P. mojavicus) having a lip region with two guard processes at both primary and secondary axils and shorter and more robust spicules, and the psammophilus-group with two species (P. deserticola and P. psammophilus) having primary axils bearing two guard processes and secondary axils with only one guard process and longer and slender spicules. Another four species (Acrobelinema cornis, Cervidellus cancellatus, C. rarus and C. sonorensis), having an intermediate morphology between Paracrobeles and Nothacrobeles, are transferred to Nothacrobeles (= Acrobelinema n. syn.).

AbstractThe late Cambrian-Early Ordovician sequences of the Cordillera Oriental in northwestern Argentina are extensive and highly fossiliferous. The olenid trilobiteParabolinella argentinensisKobayashi sensu Harrington and Leanza, 1957 was reported from a great number of Tremadocian localities and includes a wide range of morphologies. Based on specimens collected from the type locality (Purmamarca, Jujuy) and the quebrada Moya (Huacalera, Jujuy), as well as on material of the Harrington and Leanza collections in the University of Buenos Aires, classic morphometry and geometric morphometry methods were used to evaluate the variability in the cranidium ofP.argentinensis. The results obtained from the two methodologies are similar. Both analyses allowed the review of the diagnosis ofP.argentinensis, and the distinction of two new morphologies:Parabolinella clarisaen. sp. andParabolinella pompadourisn. sp. The results show how morphogeometrics distinguishes more clearly the three morphotypes and provides graphical representations of the differences between those groups and how from the representations plus the correlation between classical variables and principal components, new diagnostic characters that distinguish the three morphospecies, can be identified.

A recent nomenclatural change based on molecular data (Duellman et al. 2016) resurrected genus Ololygon to accommodate all taxa in the former Scinax catharinae clade (Faivovich 2002; Faivovich et al. 2005). Most Ololygon species inhabit Coastal Atlantic rainforests in northeastern and southeastern Brazil (Duellman et al. 2016), but some species occur in the Cerrado Domain (Cardoso & Haddad 1982; Pombal et al. 2010; Lourenço et al. 2013). Ololygon pombali (Lourenço, Carvalho, Baêta, Pezzuti & Leite, 2013) is a small species only known from the southern portion of Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra, in the municipality of Capitólio, state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. Here, we describe the vocal repertoire of Ololygon pombali and provide notes on dorsal color pattern variation, while briefly discussing their taxonomic implications.

Tephritis sahandi new species from Iran (type locality: Sahand chain mountains, East Azerbaijan Province) with an uncommon banded wing pattern is described and shown to be related to Pangasella volkovitshi Richter from Tadjikistan. Both species fit the diagnosis of the genus Tephritis Latreille 1804, and possess its key characters; as the result, Pangasella Richter 1995 (type species: Pangasella volkovitshi Richter 1995) is shown to be a new junior synonym of Tephritis, and its type species is transferred to the genus as Tephritis volkovitshi (Richter 1995) new combination. A key to the Palaearctic species of banded-winged Tephritis is provided.

Salt weathering is one of the main processes affecting rock materials applied in the built environment. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies can contribute to the understanding of the susceptibility of petrographic features of rocks to salt weathering.SEM studies were performed in limestones (grainstones with the commercial designations of Semi-rijo and Moca Creme and a travertine) submitted to salt weathering tests (EN 12370 using sodium sulphate solutions and cubic specimens) consisting of 15 cycles of immersion/drying followed by water washing after the 15th cycle. Fragments from small cubes of the grainstones subjected to salt weathering cycles without the final water cleaning were also studied. SEM observation before and after the tests allows the discussion of the petrographical characteristics of these rocks that contribute to erosive decay under salt weathering.In the case of the grainstones specimens the texture can be described in general as allochemical particles cemented by sparry calcite (Figure 1 a) and it is visible from the preparation of the polished surfaces the interface between the sparry cement and the allochemical components. After the salt weathering tests, SEM studies show (Figure 1 b) extensive fissuring in the sparry cement and separation between grains and sparry cement. Observations of disaggregation products showed an important amount of apparently intact grains. These results are similar to those observed by with the sparry cement being affect by salt crystallisation and lesser impact on the grains. Studies in the unwashed specimens showed the presence of sodium sulphate in the interface between allochemical grains and the sparry cement (Figure 1 c,d). Travertine specimens show heterogeneous patterns of erosion attributed to the heterogeneous texture of this rock, with more terrigenous (especially clay-rich) portions that favour a higher erosive susceptibility and the presence of clays has been frequently connected with salt weathering susceptibility in limestones. In Figure 1e can be observed the heterogeneity of a polished surface, with the more irregular portions showing a chemical spectra (Figure 1 f) indicative of the terrigenous component and the presence of sodium and sulphate (resulting from the solutions used in these weathering tests).The authors acknowledge the support of the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (POCTI/CTA/44940/2002; PEst-OE/CTE/UI0697/2011 and Pest-OE/CTE/UI0098/2011, funding by the European Union and national budget of the Portuguese Republic). Abstract The dasycladalean green alga Furcoporella diplopora Pia (1918) exhibits a peculiar structure comprising pairs of diverging and rather indistinct pores. Because of such structure, the genus Furcoporella has been a matter of debate. Currently, there is still no agreement on its taxonomic position within Dasycladales. This paper provides a re-description of the type-species F. diplopora Pia (1918), based on Pia’s type material from the upper Paleocene to Eocene reworked carbonates of Radstadt/Pongau, Austria. New observations carried out on this material allowed the acquisition of additional and more complete data on this quite neglected alga. Some morphological characteristics of the thallus, specifically of the laterals are discussed and a suite of potential taxonomic implications are evaluated. Finally, according to interpretations the genus Furcoporella is ascribed to the Family Triploporellaceae and more specifically it should be placed within the tribe Thyrsoporelleae.

The status and systematic position of the blue butterfly taxa, established by L.G. Courvoisier from “Narün”, are discussed. The following lectotypes are designated and figured: [Chrysophanus Phlaeas] F. naruena Courvoisier, 1911, Lycaena icarus Rott. F. wiskotti Courvoisier, 1911, Lycaena arion L. F. naruena Courvoisier, 1911 and [Lycaena] Argus Schiff. (Argyrognomon Bgstr.) f. naruena Courvoisier, 1913. The following taxonomic implications are made: L. phlaeas phlaeas (Linnaeus, 1761) = L. phlaeas naruena (Courvoisier, 1911), syn.n.; P. icarus icarus (Rottemburg, 1775) = P. icarus wiskotti (Courvoisier, 1911), syn.n.; Phengaris cyanecula naruena (Courvoisier, 1911), stat.rev. = P. cyanecula sosinomus (Fruhstorfer, 1915), syn.n., = P. cyanecula sauron (Korb, 2003), syn.n.; P. idas idas (Linnaeus, 1761) = P. idas naruena (Courvoisier, 1913), syn.n., = P. idas sareptensis Chapman, 1917, syn.n. The type locality of P. cyanecula naruena (Courvoisier, 1911) must be corrected as well: “Narün” (Naryn in Inner Kyrgyzstan). The taxonomic status and geographic distribution of the Central Asiatic populations of P. idas are discussed, which tells that the additional research is needed to clarify the problem.

Burgos and Wislocki described changes in the mucosa of the guinea pig uterus, cervix and vagina during the estrous cycle investigated by transmission electron microscopy. More recently, Moghissi and Reame reported the effects of progestational agents on the human female reproductive tract. They found drooping and shortening of cilia in norgestrel and norethindrone- treated endometria. To the best of our knowledge, no studies concerning the effects of mestranol and norethindrone given concurrently on the three-dimensional surface features on the uterine mucosa of the guinea pig have been reported. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mestranol and norethindrone on surface ultrastructure of guinea pig uterus by SEM.Seventy eight animals were used in this study. They were allocated into two groups. Group 1 (20 animals) was injected intramuscularly 0.1 ml vegetable oil and served as controls.

An epithelial cell line, NPC/HK1, has recently been successfully established from a nasopharyngeal carcinoma of the moderately to well differentiated squamous type. The present communication reports on the surface morphology of the NPC/HK1 cells in culture.

Tension wood (TW) is an abnormal tissue of hardwood trees; although it has been isolated from most parts of the tree, it is frequently found on the upper side of branches and leaning stems. TW has been classically associated with geotropic alignment, but more recently it has been associated with fast growth. Paper made from TW is generally lower in strength properties. Consequently, the paper industries' growing dependence on fast growing, short- rotation trees will result in higher amounts of TW in the final product and a corresponding reduction in strength.Relatively few studies have dealt with the role of TW in the structure of paper. It was suggested that the lower strength properties of TW were due to a combination of factors, namely, its unique morphology, compression failures in the cell wall, and lower hemicellulose content. Central to the unique morphology of the TW fiber is the thick gelatinous layer (G-layer) composed almost entirely of pure cellulose.

A scanning electron microscope (SEM) study was made of the effect of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) on the size and numbers of fenestrae/unit area in the capillary endothelium of the zona fasciculata (ZF) of the rat adrenal. The stimulatory effect of ACTH on cholesterol uptake via high density lipoproteins in the rat and evidence for the secretion of glucocorticoids by exocytosis of lipid droplets described by Rhodin suggest that endothelial change may accompany these transport phenomena.Twelve rats received two Dexamethasone (DEX) ip injections (25 μg DEX/100 g body wt.), the first at 8 PM and the second at 8 AM the next day, to inhibit the release of endogenous ACTH by the anterior pituitary. The animals were then divided into two groups. Six animals received only saline vehicle and six rats received ACTH (100 ng/100 g body wt.).
