Abstract Stationary gravity waves, such as mountain lee waves, are effectively described by Grimshaw’s dissipative modulation equations even in high altitudes where they become nonlinear due to their large amplitudes. In this theoretical study, a wave-Reynolds number is introduced to characterize general solutions to these modulation equations. This nondimensional number relates the vertical linear group velocity with wavenumber, pressure scale height, and kinematic molecular/eddy viscosity. It is demonstrated by analytic and numerical methods that Lindzen-type waves in the saturation region, that is, where the wave-Reynolds number is of order unity, destabilize by transient perturbations. It is proposed that this mechanism may be a generator for secondary waves due to direct wave–mean-flow interaction. By assumption, the primary waves are exactly such that altitudinal amplitude growth and viscous damping are balanced and by that the amplitude is maximized. Implications of these results on the relation between mean-flow acceleration and wave breaking heights are discussed.

Abstract. The altitude profiles of temperature fluctuations in the stratosphere and mesosphere observed with the Rayleigh Lidar at Gadanki (13.5° N, 79.2° E) on 30 nights during January to March 1999 and 21 nights during February to April 2000 were analysed to bring out the temporal and vertical propagation characteristics of gravity wave perturbations. The gravity wave perturbations showed periodicities in the 0.5–3-h range and attained large amplitudes (4–5 K) in the mesosphere. The phase propagation characteristics of gravity waves with different periods showed upward wave propagation with a vertical wavelength of 5–7 km. The mean flow acceleration computed from the divergence of momentum flux of gravity waves is compared with that calculated from monthly values of zonal wind obtained from RH-200 rockets flights. Thus, the contribution of gravity waves towards the generation of Stratospheric Semi Annual Oscillation (SSAO) is estimated.

Metal particles in solid propellants enhance rocket engines performance. An interaction of particles with a high Reynolds number turbulent gas flow accelerating to a nozzle, has not been characterized thoroughly. We study the particle-turbulence interactions in a two-dimensional model of a rocket engine. Two-phase particle image/tracking velocimetry provides the flow velocity simultaneously with the velocities of irregularly shaped inertial particles ($d_p \sim 350 \mu$m, Stokes $St \sim 70$, particle Reynolds number $Re_p \sim 300$). We reveal the local augmentation of turbulent fluctuations in the particle wakes (up to 5 particle diameters downstream the particle). Despite the low mass fraction, the large response time of the particles leads to an increase of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) everywhere in the chamber. The increase of local particle mass fraction near the nozzle, due to the mass conservation and converging streamlines, compensates for the dampening effect of the strong mean flow acceleration and further augments TKE at the nozzle inlet. Furthermore, this is accompanied by unexpectedly isotropic fluctuations in the proximity of the nozzle. The phenomenon of the isotropic, strongly enhanced turbulence in the proximity of the engine nozzle achievable with the low mass fraction of high $St,Re_p$ particles, can be used to improve the design of solid propellant rocket engines.

Internal gravity waves of small amplitude propagate in a Boussinesq inviscid, adiabatic liquid in which the mean horizontal velocity U(z) depends on height z only. If the Richardson number R is everywhere larger than 1/4, the waves are attenuated by a factor $\exp\{-2\pi(R - \frac{1}{4})^{\frac{1}{2}}\}$ as they pass through a critical level at which U is equal to the horizontal phase speed, and momentum is transferred to the mean flow there. This effect is considered in relation to lee waves in the airflow over a mountain, and in relation to transient localized disturbances. It is significant in considering the propagation of gravity waves from the troposphere to the ionosphere, and possibly in transferring horizontal momentum into the deep ocean without substantial mixing.

Abstract This study investigates strongly nonlinear gravity waves in the compressible atmosphere from the Earth’s surface to the deep atmosphere. These waves are effectively described by Grimshaw’s dissipative modulation equations which provide the basis for finding stationary solutions such as mountain lee waves and testing their stability in an analytic fashion. Assuming energetically consistent boundary and far-field conditions, that is no energy flux through the surface, free-slip boundary, and finite total energy, general wave solutions are derived and illustrated in terms of realistic background fields. These assumptions also imply that the wave-Reynolds number must become less than unity above a certain height. The modulational stability of admissible, both non-hydrostatic and hydrostatic, waves is examined. It turns out that, when accounting for the self-induced mean flow, the wave-Froude number has a resonance condition. If it becomes 1/ 1 / 2 1/\sqrt 2 , then the wave destabilizes due to perturbations from the essential spectrum of the linearized modulation equations. However, if the horizontal wavelength is large enough, waves overturn before they can reach the modulational stability condition.

Abstract We investigate strongly nonlinear stationary gravity waves which experience refraction due to a thin vertical shear layer of horizontal background wind. The velocity amplitude of the waves is of the same order of magnitude as the background flow and hence the self-induced mean flow alters the modulation properties to leading order. In this theoretical study, we show that the stability of such a refracted wave depends on the classical modulation stability criterion for each individual layer, above and below the shearing. Additionally, the stability is conditioned by novel instability criteria providing bounds on the mean-flow horizontal wind and the amplitude of the wave. A necessary condition for instability is that the mean-flow horizontal wind in the upper layer is stronger than the wind in the lower layer.

<p>General circulation and waves are investigated using a T63 Venus general circulation model (GCM) with solar and thermal radiative transfer in the presence of high-resolution surface topography. This model has been developed by Ikeda (2011) at the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute (AORI), the University of Tokyo, and was used in Yamamoto et al. (2019, 2021). In the wind and static stability structures similar to the observed ones, the waves are investigated. Around the cloud-heating maximum (~65 km), the simulated thermal tides accelerate an equatorial superrotational flow with a speed of ~90 m/s<sup></sup>with rates of 0.2–0.5 m/s/(Earth day) via both horizontal and vertical momentum fluxes at low latitudes. Over the high mountains at low latitudes, the vertical wind variance at the cloud top is produced by topographically-fixed, short-period eddies, indicating penetrative plumes and gravity waves. In the solar-fixed coordinate system, the variances (i.e., the activity of waves other than thermal tides) of flow are relatively higher on the night-side than on the dayside at the cloud top. The local-time variation of the vertical eddy momentum flux is produced by both thermal tides and solar-related, small-scale gravity waves. Around the cloud bottom, the 9-day super-rotation of the zonal mean flow has a weak equatorial maximum and the 7.5-day Kelvin-like wave has an equatorial jet-like wind of 60-70 m/s. Because we discussed the thermal tide and topographically stationary wave in Yamamoto et al. (2021), we focus on the short-period eddies in the presentation.</p>

Abstract We present the first wall-resolved high-fidelity simulations of high-pressure turbine (HPT) stages at engine-relevant conditions. A series of cases have been performed to investigate the effects of varying Reynolds numbers and inlet turbulence on the aerothermal behavior of the stage. While all of the cases have similar mean pressure distribution, the cases with higher Reynolds number show larger amplitude wall shear stress and enhanced heat fluxes around the vane and rotor blades. Moreover, higher-amplitude turbulence fluctuations at the inlet enhance heat transfer on the pressure-side and induce early transition on the suction-side of the vane, although the rotor blade boundary layers are not significantly affected. In addition to the time-averaged results, phase-lock averaged statistics are also collected to characterize the evolution of the stator wakes in the rotor passages. It is shown that the stretching and deformation of the stator wakes is dominated by the mean flow shear, and their interactions with the rotor blades can significantly intensify the heat transfer on the suction side. For the first time, the recently proposed entropy analysis has been applied to phase-lock averaged flow fields, which enables a quantitative characterization of the different mechanisms responsible for the unsteady losses of the stages. The results indicate that the losses related to the evolution of the stator wakes is mainly caused by the turbulence production, i.e. the direct interaction between the wake fluctuations and the mean flow shear through the rotor passages.

Numerical investigations are performed on the convection heat transfer of supercritical pressure fluid flowing through vertical mini tube with inner diameter of 0.27 mm and inlet Reynolds number of 1900 under various heat fluxes conditions using low Reynolds number k-ε turbulence models due to LB (Lam and Bremhorst), LS (Launder and Sharma) and V2F (v2-f). The predictions are compared with the corresponding experimentally measured values. The prediction ability of various low Reynolds number k-ε turbulence models under deteriorated heat transfer conditions induced by combinations of buoyancy and flow acceleration effects are evaluated. Results show that all the three models give fairly good predictions of local wall temperature variations in conditions with relatively high inlet Reynolds number. For cases with relatively low inlet Reynolds number, V2F model is able to capture the general trends of deteriorated heat transfer when the heat flux is relatively low. However, the LS and V2F models exaggerate the flow acceleration effect when the heat flux increases, while the LB model produces qualitative predictions, but further improvements are still needed for quantitative prediction. Based on the detailed flow and heat transfer information generated by simulation, a better understanding of the mechanism of heat transfer deterioration is obtained. Results show that the redistribution of flow field induced by the buoyancy and flow acceleration effects are main factors leading to the heat transfer deterioration.

A new and fruitful theory of turbulent motion was published in 1941 by A. N. Kolmogoroff. It does not seem to be as widely known outside the U.S.S.R. as its importance warrants, and the present paper therefore describes the theory in some detail before presenting a number of extensions and making a comparison of experimental results with some of the theoretical predictions.Kolmogoroff's basic notion is that at high Reynolds number all kinds of turbulent motion, of arbitrary mean-flow characteristics, show a similar structure if attention is confined to the smallest eddies. The motion due to these eddies of limited size is conceived to be isotropic and statistically steady. Within this range of eddies we recognize two limiting processes. The influence of viscosity on the larger eddies of the range is negligible if the Reynolds number is large enough, so that their motion is determined entirely by the amount of energy which they are continually passing on to smaller eddies. This quantity of energy is the local mean energy dissipation due to turbulence. On the other hand, the smaller eddies of the range dissipate through the action of viscosity a considerable proportion of the energy which they receive, and the motion of the very smallest eddies is entirely laminar. The analytical expression of this physical picture is that the motion due to eddies less than a certain limiting size in an arbitrary field of turbulence is determined uniquely by two quantities, the viscosity and the local mean energy dissipation per unit mass of the fluid.The mathematical method of describing the motion due to eddies of a particular size is to construct correlations between the differences of parallel-velocity components at two points at an appropriate distance apart. Kinematical results analogous to those for turbulence which is isotropic in the ordinary sense are obtained, and then the scalar functions occurring in the expressions for the correlations are determined by dimensional analysis. The consequences of the theory in the case of turbulence which possesses ordinary isotropy are analysed and various predictions are made. One of these, namely that dimensionless ratios of moments of the probability distribution of the rate of extension of the fluid in any direction are universal constants, is confirmed by recent experiments, so far as the second and third moments are concerned. In several other cases it can be said that relations predicted by the theory have the correct form, but further experiments at Reynolds numbers higher than those hitherto used will be required before the theory can be regarded as fully confirmed. If valid, Kolmogoroff's theory of locally isotropic turbulence will provide a powerful tool for the analysis of problems of non-uniform turbulent flow, and for the determination of statistical characteristics of space and time derivatives of quantities influenced by the turbulence.

The present work numerically considered the turbulent flow in a semi-closed rotor-stator cavity with a superimposed throughflow based on Reynolds Stress Model (RSM). The mean flow structure and turbulent field in the semi-closed cavity (SC) were identified by comparison with the flow in open cavity (OC) and closed cavity (CC). Then the effects of rotation Reynolds number, ranging from 1 × 106 to 4 × 106, on the flow in SC were investigated. The superimposed flow noticeably decreases the tangential velocity, resulting that the pressure difference between central hub and periphery in SC is greater than the OC but less than the CC. The flow in SC belongs to Stewartson type in the region between inlet and outlet, but to Bachelor type between outlet and periphery. Around the outlets, the flow is greatly affected, especially for turbulent field, where the turbulence intensities maintain at higher levels outside the two boundary layers. With the increase of Reynolds number, the tangential velocity goes up, resulted the attenuation of jet impinging effects, the shrinking of affected zones by outlets and the enlargement of pressure difference. Moreover, with the Bödewadt layer moving toward the central hub, the turbulence intensities increase inside two boundary layers but decrease outside them. Consequently, the flow is transited to Stewartson and then Batchelor type.
