Poverty, Academic Achievement, and Giftedness: A Literature Review

In this article, we review research on poverty, both poverty rates and the effects of poverty on academic achievement more generally and on the identification and services for low-income gifted children specifically. This review sets the stage for further discussion of the research findings on identification practices including the efficacy of various approaches to increase the identification of gifted students in poverty. We then review research on the effectiveness of programs designed specifically to identify students with potential and support them through talent development services. Finally, we conclude the literature review with recommendations for future research.

Customer engagement is one of the most debated topics in marketing literature. The great interest of the scientific community resulted in a large amount of research on this topic making it difficult for scholars to understand how to really contribute to advance the research. Based on these considerations, this chapter aims to provide an overview of the research findings and trends of previous studies to guide the researcher to the most influential works, results, and issues that need more insights. In particular, this chapter offers a literature review on customer engagement and retail customer engagement using bibliometric analysis and scientific mapping study. Results show the most productive authors, most cited publications, most frequent words, and clusters of related words. The analysis provides a description of the state of the art of retail customer engagement and suggests future research directions.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a detail review of the social selling literature and to offer future research needs. Social selling has gained the attention of sales researchers. Rather than merely a new tool, social selling redefines the traditional sales process. However, the literature is spread across topics of social media and sales, social customer relationship management, salesforce automation and social selling, and does not provide an agreed-upon definition or tested construct for implementation. Design/methodology/approach The paper presents a comprehensive literature review of social selling and all related terminology. Findings The authors propose a social selling framework that includes personal branding, information exchange, networking and social listening to define and outline the construct while suggesting the antecedents and outcomes to guide future research. Findings from a literature review include outlining key theories used in social selling research. Originality/value This review offers a conceptual framework of social selling, including both antecedents and outcomes, to inform future research and guide academics and practitioners.

Gifted individuals are those with extraordinary abilities unlike their peers. Poor sociometric status of gifted students often stems from the dissatisfaction of their educational needs and the fact that their interests often do not coincide with those of their peers. Research has shown that the popularity and popularity of students in a peer group is important for success in the future. The aim of this empirical study was to determine the sociometric status of potential perceived gifted students in the classroom and subject teaching. The sample were 59 students of the elementary and subject classes in rural areas in the Osijek – Baranja County. The results of the study showed that there is a strong and positive correlation between sociometric status and the number of nominations in different areas of academic achievement, and it was found that students who were found to have potential perceived giftedness had a higher sociometric status than children who were not identified as potential perceived giftedness. The results of the research could provide guidance for checking previous theoretical assumptions and supplementing existing key factors that influence the sociometric status of students in the educational system. Also, this research could be an impetus for future research in this area.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of faculty culture perceptions of students on their academic achievement. Within the scope of the study, academic achievement was measured only with the Grade Point Average (GPA). Cultural perceptions were measured through organizational structure, commitment, symbols, power distance, and communication/relationship dimensions. The data was gathered from senior students in a business school operating in a public university in Turkey. Participants consist of the students who study in 2011–2012, 2012–2013 (questionnaires were completed before graduation), and 2018–2019 periods. A total of 359 valid questionnaire forms were obtained. 42 of the questionnaire forms were eliminated by the control questions included in the questionnaire. Within this scope, 111 questionnaire forms from 2011/2012, 163 from 2012/2013, and 85 from the 2018/2019 period were obtained as valid questionnaire forms. The data was collected by the random sampling method using convenience sampling. According to research findings, only the commitment dimension of the organizational culture positively predicted students’ academic achievement. Conversely, it was found that other dimensions of organizational culture didn’t predict students’ academic achievement. Findings were discussed and suggestions were presented for practitioners and future research.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to develop a deeper understanding of the scope of talent development (TD) strategies and practices in tourism and hospitality industry contexts. Design/methodology/approach Because the literature on talent management and TD in tourism and hospitality is limited and fragmented, an integrative literature review method was used to identify and analyze relevant studies to create a more comprehensive representation of the industry’s talent strategies. Findings Findings from the literature review showed that by nature, the context of tourism and hospitality is complex and the meaning of talent in this industry is not necessarily comparable to other industry sectors (Baum, 2008). While most industries adopt a more exclusive approach to develop talent, an inclusive approach may be more ideal for tourism and hospitality especially in light of the importance of frontline employees for business success. More robust management structures and human resource systems are needed especially in small and medium tourism enterprises to aid the facilitation of TD. A partnership approach involving strong commitment between education, industry and government should be necessitated to implement and sustain TD considering the importance of the industry to nation’s economic and social advancement. Research limitations/implications This study adds to the body of literature on TD in tourism and hospitality. Future research opportunities should explore both qualitative and quantitative methods to provide empirical evidence and to further build on the literature. Practical implications Generally, organizations place emphasis on the development of technical skills, however, managers and leaders of tourism organizations should focus on developing both technical and generic competencies especially for frontline employees to ensure that a positive image of the organization is consistently demonstrated. TD can influence employees’ emotional labor; therefore, increased and quality emotional labor training can impact the types of strategies that employees use during guest encounters to promote quality service. Originality/value The paper contributes a comprehensive review of the literature on TD in the tourism and hospitality context. The TD map provides more focused direction and will aid in the establishment of TD strategies and practices.

The aim of the chapter is to describe and analyse the conception of ICTs for social services on the basis of previous international and national research and a case study of Finnish experiences. The authors describe the concept of ICTs for social services and identify the main areas of interest and research findings in relation to the paradigm of social services informatics. The data for this part was collected by an integrated literature review of ICT research. Next, the authors review and evaluate the development phases of Finnish social services informatics. On the basis of national and international literature, they compare the similarities and distinguishing elements in the evolution of social care ICT in research and practice. On the basis of these findings on the main issues, challenges, opportunities, and trends, some recommendations for future research as well as for working practices are briefly described.

The purpose of this study was to examine the education of gifted children in Turkey during 1923–2020 from an historical perspective and to evaluate the current practices in gifted education. Drawing from the literature review, we first report on the policies and the legal and corporate advancements implemented in the field of gifted education since the Declaration of the Republic. Subsequently, current practices in Turkey, including Science and Arts Centres, high schools for gifted students, and resource rooms, are evaluated. The results of a review of the relevant literature are discussed in the light of the current situation. In conclusion, it is understood that coherent and consistent policies in the field of gifted education have been developed more strongly in Turkey during the last 30 years, corporate advancements have also increased during this period, and scientific studies have gained an upward enhancement during the last 20 years. Despite all these advancements, it is concluded that current practices have still various deficiencies and should continue to be developed.

In this literature review, I explore poverty, the barriers to participation that exist for students in poverty, and why this issue should matter to music educators. Research findings about students and poverty generally fall into three categories: logistics, teacher attitudes, and policy. I identify participation barriers in each of these categories and offer suggestions how they might be addressed. Overall, findings involving poverty and music education indicate that when teachers are well-supported at the micro and macro level by legislators, administrators, parents, and other teachers, most barriers can be reduced or eliminated, and participation increases.

Using nation-wide survey data (N=2328) from China, this study investigates how social support from family, peers, and teachers influence low-income household children’s (from 13 to 15 years old) academic resilience, as well as how academic resilience mediates the relationship between social support and children’s academic achievement. Structural equation modelling was adopted to analyse the data. The results reveal that (1) low-income household children’s family, peer, and teacher support are associated with their academic resilience; (2) peer support and academic resilience of low-income household children significantly relate with their academic achievements; (3) academic resilience plays a full mediation role in teacher support and a partial mediation role in peer support on children’s academic achievement. The implications of this study on theory and practice, the limitations, and future research directions are discussed.
