Foam-formed cellulose composite materials with potential applications in sound insulation

Use of foam-formed cellulose composite materials is a viable alternative that provides potential savings in terms of raw materials, energy and water compared with conventional methods for obtaining the fibrous composites. This new innovative manufacturing method leads to obtaining porous materials with low density and low environmental impact, which could replace the petroleum-based products in different industrial application fields like sound control. In this paper is presented a methodology for producing low-density cellulose composite materials in foam media. In this methodology a surfactant is mixed with cellulose fibres (from virgin pulp and recovered papers) at high shear velocity (2000 r/min) to entrain air, dewatered on Buchner funnel under low vacuum and air dried in non-restrained conditions. The obtained composite materials have been tested by sound insulation parameters (sound transmission loss and absorption coefficients) using two experimental impedance tubes with four-microphone configuration and anechoic termination. Three samples of foam-formed cellulose composites and one water-formed composite sample were obtained. Their sound insulation performances were compared with two different commercially available petroleum-based materials currently used in sound insulation applications (i.e. expanded/extruded polystyrene). The experimental results show comparable performances between foam-formed cellulose composites and polystyrene-based samples, but in terms of the environmental impact, these materials can be an appropriate green alternative which can cut the costs of recycling process.

In our work we studied composites of poly(lactic) acid (PLA) and low density polyethylene filled with cellulose fibres. The studied composite materials were manufactured with a twin-screw extruder. The extruded compound was processed in to samples using compression moulding. The content of cellulose in polymer/cellulose composites was varied. Effect of low amounts of cellulose on the rheological and tensile properties was studied. Tensile tests showed that the incorporation of cellulose into PLA matrix lead to stiffer but slightly more brittle and weaker materials, since Young's modulus increases and tensile strength and elongation at break slightly decrease. Mechanical results are in agreement with rheological behaviour: the composites exhibit the improvement in the storage and loss moduli of composites compared with that of matrix polymers. The composite dynamic viscosity increases with cellulose content in the same manner as loss and storage moduli. The processing and material properties of PLA/cellulose composites were compared to the more commonly used low-density-polyethylene/cellulose composites.http://dx.doi.org/10.5755/j01.ms.17.1.245

Polypropylene (PP)-cellulose fibre blends exhibit substantial potential for the production of high-performance textile fibre–reinforced composites. The production of reinforced parts from PP-cellulose composites through thermal shaping of intermingled fibre blends is a strategy to form parts which exhibit superior mechanical properties. In this study, the use of intermingled fibre slivers with different ratios of lyocell fibres (CLY) and PP fibres as raw materials for thermally formed composites was investigated. Such a concept will maximize the interface between the reinforcement fibres and polymer matrix. The cellulose fibres remain oriented along the direction in which the drawing process was performed, which forms the basis for tailored fibre placement in technical production. Because of good surface contact between the cellulose fibre surface and PP matrix, no special coupling agents were required to improve the interfacial adhesion between the two different polymers. The share of CLY and PP fibres in the composite varied from 50% w/w CLY content, up to 70% w/w CLY. Besides analysis of the mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and E-modulus, attention was directed towards moisture sorption of the composites. The rate of sorption and amount of water bound in the composite were found to be dependent on the cellulose fibre content. Composites with a higher CLY content exhibited a more rapid and higher moisture uptake. In water saturated state, the ultimate tensile strength of composites reduced from 160 MPa to 90 MPa, which is an indicator for a reduced adhesion between the CLY surface and PP matrix. The results indicate the potential of the intermingled fibre concept blend for the efficient manufacturing of composite parts.

When pulp and minerals are co-processed in aqueous suspension, the mineral acts as a grinding aid, facilitating the cost-effective production of fibrils. Furthermore, this processing allows the utilization of robust industrial milling equipment. There are 40000 dry metric tons of mineral/microfbrillated (MFC) cellulose composite production capacity in operation across three continents. These mineral/MFC products have been cleared by the FDA for use as a dry and wet strength agent in coated and uncoated food contact paper and paperboard applications. We have previously reported that use of these mineral/MFC composite materials in fiber-based applications allows generally improved wet and dry mechanical properties with concomitant opportunities for cost savings, property improvements, or grade developments and that the materials can be prepared using a range of fibers and minerals. Here, we: (1) report the development of new products that offer improved performance, (2) compare the performance of these new materials with that of a range of other nanocellulosic material types, (3) illustrate the performance of these new materials in reinforcement (paper and board) and viscosification applications, and (4) discuss product form requirements for different applications.

Bamboo is a lightweight and high-strength raw materials that encouraged researchers to investigate and explore, especially in the field of biocomposite and declared as one of the green-technology on the environment as fully accountable as eco-products. This research was to assess the technical feasibility of making single-layer experimental Medium-Density Particleboard panels from the bamboo waste of a three-year-old (Dendrocalamus asper). Waste materials were performed to produce composite materials using epoxy resin (C21H25C105) from a natural treatment by soaking with an average of pH 7.6 level of sea-water. Three different types of MDP produced, i.e., bamboo waste strip MDP (SMDP), bamboo waste chips MDP (CMDP) and bamboo waste mixed strip-chips MDP (MMDP) by following the same process. The experimental panels tested for their physical-mechanical properties according to the procedures defined by ASTM D1037-12. Conclusively, even the present study shows properties of MDP with higher and comparable to other composite materials; further research must be given better attention as potential substitute to be used as hardwood materials, especially in the production, design, and construction usage.

The building sector is known to have a significant environmental impact, considering that it is the largest contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions of around 36% and is also responsible for about 40% of global energy consumption. Of this, about 50% takes place during the building operational phase, while around 10–20% is consumed in materials manufacturing, transport and building construction, maintenance, and demolition. Increasing the necessity of reducing the environmental impact of buildings has led to enhancing not only the thermal performances of building materials, but also the environmental sustainability of their production chains and waste prevention. As a consequence, novel thermo-insulating building materials or products have been developed by using both locally produced natural and waste/recycled materials that are able to provide good thermal performances while also having a lower environmental impact. In this context, the aim of this work is to provide a detailed analysis for the thermal characterization of recycled materials for building insulation. To this end, the thermal behavior of different materials representing industrial residual or wastes collected or recycled using Sardinian zero-km locally available raw materials was investigated, namely: (1) plasters with recycled materials; (2) plasters with natural fibers; and (3) building insulation materials with natural fibers. Results indicate that the investigated materials were able to improve not only the energy performances but also the environmental comfort in both new and in existing buildings. In particular, plasters and mortars with recycled materials and with natural fibers showed, respectively, values of thermal conductivity (at 20 °C) lower than 0.475 and 0.272 W/(m⋅K), while that of building materials with natural fibers was always lower than 0.162 W/(m⋅K) with lower values for compounds with recycled materials (0.107 W/(m⋅K)). Further developments are underway to analyze the mechanical properties of these materials.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the sound insulation of double-leaf panels. In practice, double-leaf panels require a stud between two surface panels. To simplify the analysis, a stud was modeled as a spring and mass. Studies have indicated that the stiffness of the equivalent spring is not a constant and varies with the frequency of sound. Therefore, a frequency-dependent stiffness curve was used to model the effect of the stud to analyze the sound insulation of a double-leaf panel. First, the sound transmission loss of a panel reported by Halliwell was used to fit the results of this study to determine the stiffness of the distribution curve. With this stiffness distribution of steel stud, some previous proposed panels are also analyzed and are compared to the experimental results in the literature. The agreement is good. Finally, the effects of parameters, such as the thickness and density of the panel, thickness of the stud and spacing of the stud, on the sound insulation of double-leaf panels were analyzed.

Chopped carbon fiber-reinforced low-density unsaturated polyester resin (CCFR-LDUPR) composite materials with light weight and high mechanical properties were prepared at low temperature and under the synergistic action of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP-II) and cobalt naphthenate. Optimal preparation conditions were obtained through an orthogonal experiment, which were preparation temperature at 58.0 °C, 2.00 parts per hundred of resin (phr) of NH4HCO3, 4.00 phr of chopped carbon fibers (CCFs) in a length of 6.0 mm, 1.25 phr of initiator and 0.08 phr of cobalt naphthenate. CCFR-LDUPR composite sample presented its optimal properties for which the density (ρ) was 0.58 ± 0.02 g·cm−3 and the specific compressive strength (Ps) was 53.56 ± 0.83 MPa·g−1·cm3, which is 38.9% higher than that of chopped glass fiber-reinforced low-density unsaturated polyester resin (CGFR-LDUPR) composite materials. Synergistic effects of initiator and accelerator accelerated the specific polymerization of resin in facile preparation at low temperature. Unique “dimples”, “plate microstructure” and “surface defect” fabricated the specific microstructure of the matrix of CCFR-LDUPR composite samples, which was different from that of cured unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) with “body defect” or that of CGFR-LDUPR with coexistence of “surface defect” and “body defect”.

This study evaluated the potential use of Sugarcane Bagasse Ashes (SBA) as a flux, replacing phyllite for the production of enamelled porcelain tile. The raw materials of the standard mass components and the SBA residue were characterized by testing by XRF, XRD, AG, DTA and TGA. Test samples were fabricated, assembled in lots of 3 units and sintered at temperatures of 1150 ° C to 1210 ° C. The results of the physical properties, mechanical properties and SEM of the sintered samples, showed that the formulation, G4 - in which applied 10% of SBA replacing phyllite, sintering temperature 1210 ° C showed better performance as the previously mentioned properties due to the formation of mullite crystals, meeting the prerequisites of standards for enamelled porcelain tile, while reducing the environmental impact and the cost of production.
