Derived and reported utility functions for members of a high school junior's family were used to predict actual college applications made the next year. The manipulations were whether or not advance deliberations were prompted before the utility measurement and whether or not subjects imagined an imminent commitment deadline. The predictions were poorer when subjects did not deliberate in advance or imagine a commitment was imminent. The reported utilities gave better predictions than the derived ones.

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused several changes in the human state of mind, in particular adapting to the culture of the new normal while lockdown measures are implemented. This study explored the effect of the lockdown measure on the level of anxiety of high school students, comparing those identified as introverts and extroverts. Participants (N = 103) filled out the given survey, which determined that they were both introverts or extroverts and the level of anxiety that they had before, during, and after the lockdown caused by the pandemic. According to statistical analysis, the result showed that the level of anxiety perceived by those feeling the sense of extroversion was statistically higher than those with introversion, at the significance level of 95%. In addition, the analysis revealed that there was no correlation between extroverts and anxiety before, during, and after the lockdown measures. On the other hand, there were statistical correlations between the level of introversion and the level of anxiety in every stage of lockdown: before, during and after, indicating that the lockdowns due to the global pandemic did not affect extroverted people anxiety as much as it affected introverts. Moreover, it also showed that the level of anxiety of the introverts has become even more intensified even after the lockdown.

Increasingly, appliers of conjoint analysis are being faced with the need to reduce data collection demands on respondents while still obtaining enough data to estimate individual utility functions. The authors propose a model that combines the ease of self-explicated utility measurement with the greater generality of decompositional models to develop estimated utility functions that maintain individual differences. The model is applied to a conjoint study involving physicians’ evaluations of a new antibiotic drug. The paper concludes with suggestions for possible extensions of the approach.

High school cosmetology students study the methods and effects of various human hair treatments, including permanents, straightening, conditioning, coloring and cutting. Although they are provided with textbook examples of overtreatment and numerous hair disorders and diseases, a view of an individual hair at the high resolution offered by an SEM provides convincing evidence of the hair‘s altered structure. Magnifications up to 2000X provide dramatic differences in perspective. A good quality classroom optical microscope can be very informative at lower resolutions.Students in a cosmetology class are initially split into two groups. One group is taught basic controls on the SEM (focus, magnification, brightness, contrast, specimen X, Y, and Z axis movements). A healthy, untreated piece of hair is initially examined on the SEM The second group cements a piece of their own hair on a stub. The samples are dryed quickly using heat or vacuum while the groups trade places and activities.
